Audrey V. Schell
Audrey V. Reel Schell, 83, of Dorcas, W.Va., died Monday, June 26, 2000 at her home.

She was born Jan. 15, 1917 in Maysville, W.Va., the daughter of Ira T. and Alma McDonald Reel.

She was a homemaker and member of Maysville United Methodist Church.

She was married to Ernest Ellis Schell, who died Nov. 11, 1989.

Surviving are four sons, Warren William Schell of Dorcas, W.Va., Daniel Leon Schell of Petersburg, W.Va., Ira Wendell Schell of Stafford, and Robert Thornton Schell of Bunker Hill, W. Va.; four daughters, Vonnie Lou Grimes of Spotsylvania, Alma Yvonne Schell of Jefferson, Ga., Eleanor Jean Feaster of Petersburg, W.Va., and Margaret Elaine Carr of Winchester; three brothers, William Reel and Wayne Reel of Petersburg, W.Va., and Glenn Reel of El Paso, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ellen Reel; and three sons, Ernest Ellis Schell Jr., Kenneth Lee Schell, and Richard Allan Schell.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, W.Va.

A funeral service will be said at 2 p.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial will be at the Maysville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Maysville United Methodist Church or Maysville Volunteer Fire Company.

Dorsey G. Nickens
Dorsey G. Nickens, 80, of Front Royal, died Monday, June 26, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mr. Nickens was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Linden, the son of Alba Walden and Dorsey G. Nickens Sr. He was a switcher for the Lend-Lease Trucking Co. of Front Royal.

He was a member of Harris Reynolds Puller American Legion Post 174 in Front Royal and John Wesley United Methodist Church.

He was married to Bertha E. Baltimore.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Carroll Nickens of Ashburn, Dorsey E. Nickens of Mesa, Ariz., and Ervin Nickens of Oxon Hill, Md.; a daughter, Sylvia Moore of Fredericksburg; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Lorenzo D. Hill officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, with full military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg.

Pallbearers will be his nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund, 14 Church St., Front Royal 22630.

Richie M. Gallagher
Richie McAtee Gallagher, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Berryville, died Saturday, June 24, 2000.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. Richard Anthony Gallagher, William Edward Gallagher Jr., and John Paul Gallagher; a brother, Kenneth McAtee; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, W. Edward Gallagher, is deceased.

A Mass of Christian burial will at 11 a.m. July 5, 2000, in St. John the Evangelist Historic Church, Silver Spring, Md.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service at the church.

Evelyn C. Johnson
Evelyn C. Johnson, 55, of 629 Joshua Drive, Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 15, 1945, in Clearbrook, the daughter of Harry R. and Mary E. Brown. She worked in dietetics at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She was formerly married to William R. Johnson, of Shenandoah Junction.

Surviving are her mother, of Winchester; a son, Keith R. Johnson of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; two daughters, Danielle J. Cato and Yolanda J. Johnson, both of Martinsburg; four sisters, Mary L. Brown, Rosie Brown, Mary E. Brown, and Sharon Brown, all of Winchester; five brothers, Johnnie Randolph Brown, Carl Lee Brown, and Ronnie Brown, all of Winchester, Calvin Brown of Summit Point, W.Va., and Clyde Brown of Martinsburg; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cartwright Funeral Home, with the Elder Claude Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

Pallbearers will be Mike Robinson, Jamie Robinson, Lee Brown, Stanley Brown, Craig Brown, and Chris Brown.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Virginia B. Naff
Virginia Burch Naff, 82, of The Southerlands, Front Royal, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in the Southerlands.

Mrs. Naff was born July 4, 1917, in Clarke County, the daughter of Julian Glenn and Ethel Jenkins Burch. She had taught in the lower school of Fork Union Military Academy.

She graduated from Boyce Agriculture High School in 1935.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester.

She married the Rev. David Winton Naff Jr. on Feb. 22, 1940, in Clarke County. Mr. Naff died in 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Naff Matlack of Warren County; two sisters, Mae Withers of Berryville and Elizabeth Burwell of Richmond; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, Berryville, with the Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Roy Alan Shafer
Roy Alan Shafer, 56, of St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Frederick County, died June 6, 2000, in Flagler Hospital.

Mr. Shafer was born in Sommerville, N.J., the son of Olin and Muriel Shafer.

He was a machine operator for VAW and had lived in St. Augustine since 1974.

He attended James Wood High School and served in the Navy.

Surviving with his mother, of Daytona Beach, Fla., are a son, Michael Shafer of St. Augustine; two sisters, Carole Shafer Oates of Stephens City and Susan Shafer Strehler of Houston, Texas; a brother, Wayne Shafer of Cambridge, England; and a grandchild.

A son, Robert Shafer, is deceased.

A graveside service was June 12 in St. Augustine Memorial Park.

Margaret V. Hancock
Margaret V. Hancock, 75, of Epworth, Iowa, formerly of Winchester, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at her home.

She was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Winchester, the daughter of James Russell and Emma Virginia Cooley. She was a retired teacher’s aide.

She was married to Calvin Hancock, who died in November 1971.

Surviving are two sons, Tom Hancock and Gary Hancock, both of Epworth, a sister, Jane Cooley of Silver Spring, Md.; three brothers, Howard S. Cooley of Seffner, Fla., Courtney B. Cooley of Stephens City, and James W. Cooley of Frederick County; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Thursday in Epworth.

Reiff Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Donald F. Landis
Donald Francis Landis, 61, of Romney, W.Va., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Landis was born May 12, 1939, in Slanesville, W.Va., the son of Oscar Landis and Gyneth Bennett Landis. He was a bus driver for the Hampshire County Board of Education and a member of the Springfield Assembly of God Church, Springfield, W.Va.

He was married to Lois Logston.

Surviving with his mother, of Slanesville, and his wife, are a son, Michael F. Landis of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a sister, Doris F. Nida of Logan, W.Va.; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today in the Springfield Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. James Blubaugh officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Union Cemetery, Paw Paw, W.Va.

Arrangements are being handled by McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va.

Marshall H. Lovett
Marshall Haseman Lovett, 80, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in White Oak Estates, Spartanburg.

Mr. Lovett was born Jan. 31, 1920, in Frederick County, the son of Harry Parke and Annie Haseman Lovett. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired as chief metallurgist at the Cleveland, Forest City Division of Lawson-Sessions.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Thomas Lovett; two daughters, Martha Lovett Adams of Rochester, N.Y., and Susan Thomas Lovett of Boston; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Spartanburg, with the Rev. Marion W. Clark and the Rev. Everette E. Lineberger officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Lena E. Sloane
Lena E. Sloane, 76, of White Post, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.

Mrs. Sloane was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Warren County, the daughter of William Johnson and Lillie Tigney Johnson. She was a member of Garfield Baptist Church, Riverton, where she served as an usher.

She was married to Gabel Sloane.

Surviving are her niece, Louise Peyton, who was her caregiver; three sisters, Lillie Russell of Front Royal, Elizabeth Washington of Cleveland, and Katie Johnson of Winchester; and a brother, Charlie Johnson of Boyce.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cartwright Funeral Home, with Elder Franklin Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Success Baptist Church Cemetery, Front Royal.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bertha H. Stanaitis
Bertha Hahn Stanaitis, 83, of Winchester, formerly of Wardensville, W.Va., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at the home of her niece in Winchester.

Mrs. Stanaitis was born Nov. 9, 1916, in Hardy County, W.Va., the daughter of Lorenzo M. and Amanda Michael Hahn. She was a clerk for the LUTC in Washington, D.C., and a registered nurse for Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are two brothers, John Hahn and Wilbur “Web” Hahn, both of Wardensville; and a sister, Pauline Thompson of Wardensville.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today in Hahn-Michael Cemetery, Wardensville, with Pastor Carlyle A. McDonald officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22604.

Arrangements are being handled by Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Edna H. Tamkin
Edna Virginia Hoover Tamkin, 95, of Strasburg, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Tamkin was born April 17, 1905, in Woodstock, the daughter of Charles Luther and Sarah Catherine Wisman Hoover. She was a teacher in Shenandoah County public schools.

She was married to Raymon Walter Tamkin from 1930 until his death Feb. 25, 1989. They lived in Strasburg for most of their marriage and were active in the Strasburg United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Tamkin served as superintendent of the children’s division, teacher, missions chairwoman, and on the administrative committee. She was a charter member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, now the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Tamkin also served as zone leader of women’s work and as treasurer of the Hermitage Guild. She also was a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary where she presented testaments to nurses in hospitals and nursing homes.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Lewis Donald Tamkin of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Reba T. Smith of Las Cruces, N.M.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Sunday at Strasburg United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Brenda Biler and Warren Tamkin officiating. Burial was in Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock.

Pallbearers were Bill Stover, Lonnie Goad, Earl Williams, Alvin Hamman, Bill David, and Jimmy Williams.

Memorials may be made to Strasburg United Methodist Church, 114. W. Washington St., Strasburg 22657 or to the United Methodist Committee on Relief in care of Strasburg United Methodist Church.

Esther L. Watson
Esther Lee Watson, 79, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mrs. Watson was born May 28, 1921, in Jefferson County, W.Va., the daughter of William Lee Walters and Mary Anderson Walters. She was retired from Corning Glass and was a member for more than 50 years of Bedington United Methodist Church, where she also was a member of Wesley Ivy Leaf Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Daughters of America and the Bedington Homemakers Club. She was a 1941 graduate of Charles Town High School.

She was married to J. Douglas Watson.

Surviving are a son, F. Stephen Watson of Martinsburg; a brother, Edward Walters of Martinsburg; and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two infant sons.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert W. Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Middleway, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Charles J. Martin
Charles Junior Martin, 81, of Romney, W.Va., died Thursday, June 22, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.

Mr. Martin was born May 30, 1919, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of Charles and Rosa Powelson Martin. He was a cab driver and helped operate Buck’s Taxi in Romney.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Augusta, W.Va., with the Rev. Larry Powell officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pauline R. Baldwin
Pauline “Polly” Rudacille Baldwin, 84, of Limeton, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in Rutherford’s Rest Home, Front Royal.

Mrs. Baldwin was born Oct. 22, 1915, in Limeton, the daughter of Frank T. and Bessie Fristoe Rudacille. She was a licensed practical nurse. She was a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory of Music.

She was a member of Limeton United Methodist Church where she was choir director for 55 years.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Gideons International, Front Royal Camp.

She was married to Charles William Baldwin Jr.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty B. Armentrout of Manassas; a foster brother, William Spence of Winchester; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Peg Mitchell and the Rev. Ralph Crabill officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will Paul Stollings, David Labovitz, Irvin Rudacille, Coleman Rudacille, Bruce Hoshall, and Doug Jones.

Beulah G. Braithwaite
Beulah Gill “Bo” Braithwaite, 85, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Braithwaite was born May 17, 1915, in Capon Bridge, the daughter of Clarence A. and Ada May Schaffenaker Gill.

She was a teacher for more than 40 years. She began teaching in 1937 in North Texas School near Delray, W.Va., and taught in Hampshire County, W.Va., Washington County, Md., and Frederick County, Md.

She was a 1933 graduate of Capon Bridge High School and a 1937 graduate of Shepherd College. She was a member of Kappa Delta Psi Honor Society.

She had been a member of Capon Bridge Christian Church since 1926 and served as deaconess, president of the Church Board, organist, and teacher. She was a member of Capon Bridge Town Council and the Capon Bridge Senior Center.

She was married to Harry L. Braithwaite, who died in 1993.

Surviving are three nieces, Linda Oates of Capon Bridge, Gayla Jones of Dallastown, Pa., and Cheryl Smith of Augusta; and a nephew, Larry A. Whitacre of Stephenson.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Capon Bridge Christian Church, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Jack Wardrope and the Rev. Herman Goede officiating. Burial will be in Capon Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Danny Oates, Evan Oates, Davy Jones, Mike Jones, Kelly Smith, Brian Smith, Mark Hostetler, and David Hiett.

Mary Lou Aduddell
Mary Lou Aduddell, 76, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Mrs. Aduddell was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Whitehaven, Tenn., the daughter of Hugo H. and Eva Johnson Ingram.

She was a public school teacher in Tennessee. She was a 1941 graduate of Whitehaven High School and earned a BS degree in mathematics and Latin from Memphis State University in 1945.

She was a member and treasurer of Greenwood United Methodist Church in Unger, W.Va., and taught Sunday school.

She was married to John Emmett Aduddell for 54 years.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, John E. Aduddell Jr. of Wayne, Pa.; three daughters, Carolyn Sue Rose of Culpeper, Dorothy Jane Daughtry of Annandale, and Sandra Ann Pope of Warrenton; a sister, Jane Waters of Memphis; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenwood United Methodist Church, Unger, with the Rev. Glenn F. Stevens Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Joyce D. De Vries
Joyce D. De Vries, 60, of Clearbrook, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. De Vries was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Paterson, N.J., the daughter of Duke and Anna Boon Streelman. She was a phone operator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

She was a member of the Christian Reform Church.

She married Otto De Vries on Aug. 26, 1961, in New Jersey.

Surviving with her husband, are two daughters, Linda Geron of Haledon, N.J., and Barbara De Vries of Fair Lawn, N.J.; a sister, Ruth Devisser of Pompton Plains, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with Dr. Parker Hinzman officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
