Joseph F. Reilly
Joseph Francis Reilly, 70, of Winchester, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Reilly was born Oct. 27, 1929, in Queens, N.Y., the son of Charles M. and Margaret Kregel Reilly. He was an electrical engineer for the U.S. Government and retired in 1985.

He was a graduate of Manhattan College in New York.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

He married Lois Albert on Nov. 1, 1952, in Washington, D.C.

Surviving with his wife, are a son, James Michael Reilly of Pittsburgh.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Entombment will be private.

Pallbearers will be Bill Salyan, Bill Black, Al Weaver, Tom Rissler, Edward Marshall, and Dean Allen.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home.

Esther L. Moore
Esther Lucille Moore, 86, of Front Royal, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center, Winchester.

Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Fairchance, Pa., the daughter of Robert Lee and Ida Conn Hughs.

She was married to Lt. Col. Charles Franklin Moore.

Surviving are two sons, William Lee Moore of Leesburg and John Charles Moore of Garland, Texas; a sister, Betty Langley of Uniontown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Ronald Sage officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Pallbearers will be David Moore, Joseph Moore, John Megee, Loy Clem, Harry Dicks, and Kenneth Robinson.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Herbert E. Burgess
Herbert Edward Burgess, 62, of HC-78, Box 79FF, Augusta, W.Va., died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the home of his daughter, Virginia Burgess.

Mr. Burgess was born Feb. 27, 1938, in Albemarle County, the son of Clarence E. and Ora Earle Lang Burgess. He was a retired truck driver.

Surviving with his mother, of Augusta, are three daughters, Cindy Burgess of Manassas, Virginia Burgess of Augusta, and Barbara Allen of Luray; two sons, Pete Burgess of Arlington and Buster Burgess of Nokesville; a sister, Emma Sprouse of Augusta; a brother, John Ralph Burgess of Buck Hill; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in McKee Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in Augusta Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Stephen P. Wright Sr.
Stephen P. Wright Sr., 52, of 695 White Oak Road, White Post, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Wright was born July 27, 1947, in Frostburg, Md., the son of Edward P. and Alice Adams Wright. He was a gas plumber for Masters Inc. of Winchester.

He was a member of Word of Faith Tabernacle.

He married Jennifer A. Jones on June 21, 1997, in Kearneysville, W.Va.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother, of Front Royal, are two sons, Stephen P. Wright Jr. of Front Royal and David E. Wright of Middletown; a daughter, Leslie A. Smith of Stephens City; a step-son, Donald L. Wilson of Winchester; a stepdaughter, Angela M. Howser of Stephens City; a sister, Mary Alice Ashcraft of Strasburg; three brothers, Edward Wright of Frostburg, Md., Francis Wright of Front Royal, and William Wright of Basye; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, Stephens City, with Pastor C.D. Coley and Pastor Shawn Coley officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Richard Smith, Billy Smith, Donald Smith, Gary Dillion, Allen Dinges, John Fiacco, Donald Van-Pelt, Jay Smith, and Ronnie Ashcraft.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and after the funeral at the VFW Hall in Stephens City.

Daphna C. Wymer
Daphna Clayton Wymer, 83, of 2579 Junction Road, Strasburg, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Wymer was born May 28, 1916, in Natural Bridge, the daughter of Herbert Edward and Lucille Burkes Claytor. She was a member of the St. Stephens Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a lay speaker, past president of the Lutheran Church Women, Virginia Synod. She was a volunteer and coordinator for the Area Council on Aging.

Mrs. Wymer was a graduate of Madison College and a retired teacher with the Shenandoah County Public Schools where she taught first grade for 38 years. She was past president of the Shenandoah County Retired Teachers Association.

She was the wife of the late Kenneth Riley Wymer.

Surviving are two daughters, Margie C. Clevenger of Middletown and Loretta W. Elbon of Fairfield; three sons, Kenneth A. Wymer of Toms Brook, F. Edward Wymer of Strasburg, and John L. Wymer of New Market; a brother, Robert Claytor of Richmond; a sister, Mildred Hockman Brennan of Natural Bridge; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Baseler, the Rev. Doug Stowe, and the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jeffrey Lee Elbon, Douglas Allen Elbon, Michael Ray Carroll, Scott Christopher Wymer, Russell Edward Wymer, Paul Eugene Taylor, and Anthony Kent Davis.

The family will receive friends at the Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will meet at the church at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Joseph L. Tate
Joseph L. Tate, 83, of 619 Baptist St., Staunton, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Tate was born Feb. 12, 1917, in Staunton, the son of Luther Motera and Lavinia Branson Tate. He was retired from the American Safety Razor Co.

He was a graduate of the former Booker T. Washington High School.

He was a lifelong member of the Augusta Street United Methodist Church and a charter member of Club 14 Inc. He was past master of Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge 18. He was active in the Salvation Army, Valley Mission, and the Booker T. Washington Alumni Association.

He and his wife, Edna L. Tate, were married 60 years.

Surviving with his wife, are two daughters, Maleda Cox of Silver Spring, Md., and Patricia Turner of Merrillville, Ind.; and a sister, Lavinia Gillison of Berryville.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Augusta Street United Methodist Church, Staunton, with the Rev. Ralph Harris officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be members of Mt. Zion Lodge 18 F&A.

The family will receive friends at the Tate home.

Wendell B. Porterfield
Wendell Bruce Porterfield, 85, of 4525 Rieves Pond Drive, Chester, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond.

Mr. Porterfield was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Bedington, W.Va., the son of Wendell Small and Cora Kennedy Porterfield.

He was retired as an agricultural chemical salesman.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Winchester, and a member of Winchester-Frederick County Fruit Growers Association.

He married Nancy Latimer on Dec. 1, 1942, in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Anna Moore of Chester; two sons, Wendell B. Porterfield Jr. of Vale, Colo., and David L. Porterfield of Vienna; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Charles M. Bennett
Charles Murten Bennett, 88, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in City Hospital Martinsburg.

Mr. Bennett was born Feb. 19, 1912, in Warren County, the son of Charles W. Bennett and Bertha May Furley Bennett. He was retired from C. H. Musselman and a member of Mountain View Church of the Brethren.

He was married to Dorothy Billmyer Bennett, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Charles A. Bennett Sr. of Stephens City and Robert L. Bennett of Gerrardstown, W.Va., a daughter, D. Rosa Lee Willis of Lakeland, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Church of the Brethren with Mr. Bennett’s nephew, Carl Burleson, officiating.

Burial will be private.

Brian Scott DeHaven, 33, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mr. DeHaven was born Nov. 22, 1966, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of David C. DeHaven and Carolyn B. Faircloth Saville. He was employed D&C Guttering, was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Class of 1984, and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

Surviving with his parents are his step-mother, Mary Ann DeHaven of Inwood, W.Va.; his step-father, Vincent Saville Jr. of Hedgesville, W.Va.; a sister, Kim DeHaven Lamp of Martinsburg; a step-brother, Pete Saville of Martinsburg; three step-sisters, Amy Wilk of Hagerstown, Md., Nicole Saville of Winchester, and Jackie Saville of Romney, W.Va.; and two grandmothers, Thelma F. DeHaven and Eleanor Faircloth, both of Martinsburg.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Al Clipp officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Mary V. Fries
Mary Virginia Fries, 79, of 281 Old Bethel Lane, Winchester, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Ms. Fries was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Frederick County, the daughter of Willie and Bessie Fries. She was a clerk at McCrory’s Department Store, retiring after 32 years and was a farmer. She was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church and a trustee of Bethel Grange Cemetery.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Floetta Legg officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Grange Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Linden Unger, Carroll Unger, Eugene Leake, Dwain Place, Albert Messick, and Harry Sirbaugh.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Darryl V. Lutman
Darryl Vance Lutman, 38, of Route 1, Box 220-36, High View, W.Va., died Friday, May 19, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Lutman was born July 25, 1961, in Keyser, W.Va., the son of Osa D. Lutman and Mary Lutman. He was a power house engineer for Unico, a division of AT&T in Middletown, a sergeant in the Army National Guard, based inWoodstock, and was a graduate of Keyser High School, Class of 1980.

He married Donna Elizabeth Lutman on Jan. 26, 1989, in Front Royal.

Surviving with his wife are his parents of Keyser; a son, Travis Lutman of Manassas; three brothers, Edward Lutman of Keyser, Michael Lutman of Toms Brook, and Jason Lutman of Glendale, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Jacklynn Webb of Staunton; a step-son, Gary Meadows of Winchester; his grandparents, Kenneth and Mary Markle of Keyser; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Stephens City, with the Rev. Kirk G. Nave officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park with full military honors provided by the Army National Guard, who also will serve as pallbearers.

Helen P. Ritenour
Helen Painter Ritenour, 81, of 215 Queen St., Leesburg, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Hilltop Home for Adults.

Mrs. Ritenour was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Stephens City, the daughter of Lloyd and Lucy Painter. She was a bookkeeper for 22 years at Southern States, worked for Jewell Trucking, and was a member of Leesburg UMC for 55 years.

She was married to Harry Lucius Ritenour, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Joe S. Ritenour of Leesburg; three brothers, Cecil Painter of Winchester, Herbert Painter of Stephens City, and Marvin Painter of Berryville; two sisters, Mildred Repass of Stephens City, and Jean Updyke of Strasburg; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, Leesburg, with the Rev. Michael Browder officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Leesburg.

Barbara A. Smiley
Barbara Allan Carter Smiley, 66, of 7601 Main St., Middletown, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Smiley was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Deal Island, Md., the daughter of Leroy and Etta Taylor Carter. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, deal Island, Md., Northwest Community House, and a lifetime member of Go Getters.

Surviving is a daughter, Teresa Ann Yates of Atlantic City, N.J.; two sons, John Leroy Laird and Keith Allan Laird, both of Winchester; a brother, Thomas Taylor of Wenona, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. William R. Withers officiating. Burial will be in private.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral.

James P. Brenner
James Purvis “Chip” Brenner Jr., 52, of Front Royal, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Brenner was born Oct. 7, 1947, in Arlington, the son of James Purvis Brenner Sr. and Doris Hodges Brenner. He was the parts manager for Shenandoah Motors and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4262.

He married Wanda Sue Walker on July 12, 1980. Mrs. Brenner died on July 29, 1983.

Surviving are his mother of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Sonya Lynne Brenner and Devin Michelle Brenner, both of Front Royal; a brother, Robert Brenner of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; and a sister Janice B. Heffler of Vero Beach, Fla.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Howard R. Trittipoe
Howard Randolph “Trix” Trittipoe Jr., 72, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home in Thunderbird Hills.

Mr. Trittipoe was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Washington, D.C., the son of Howard Randolph Trittipoe Sr. and Vyolett Jewell Trittipoe. He was a graduate of McKinley Tech High School in Washington, D.C., and earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education, recreation and health from the University of Maryland in 1956. He served with the Army’s 11th Airborne Division from 1946 to 1949, attaining the rank of corporal. He was a fireman with the District of Columbia Fire Department from April 1958 until his retirement in March 1975. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith, the Maryland “M” Club and Terrapin Club, the 11th Airborne Division Association, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the 11th Airborne Association, and was a life member of the 187th Airborne R.T.C. Association. He was past commander and a life member of both Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post No. 60 and Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 of Berkeley Springs, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1483, the National Rifle Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He married Betty Lee Yost Cohill on June 26, 1973.

Surviving with his wife are two step-children, Felicia C. Hovermale and Felippe B. Cohill Jr., both of Berkeley Springs; three step-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. John S. Ledford officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va., with military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will be a Moose Lodge memorial service at 7 p.m.

Clara Mason
Clara “Tootsie” Mason, 78, of 4341/2 N. Kent St., Winchester, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Miss Mason was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Browntown, the daughter of Howard Mason and Hattie Brown Mason. She was a member of St. Stephen C.M.E. Church, Winchester, and of the church’s Missionary Society.

She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at noon Monday at Cartwright Funeral Home, Winchester, with the Rev. Bryan Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

James S. Riggleman
James Sherman “Jimmy” Riggleman, 34, of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Riggleman was born March 15, 1966, in Winchester, the son of Douglas D. and Goldie J. Chaney Riggleman. He was a mechanic at Tire Distributors in Winchester.

Surviving with his parents of Paw Paw are his wife, Pamela L. Eddy Riggleman; two sons, Matthew C. Riggleman and James D. Riggleman, both of Paw Paw; two daughters, Nicole M. Riggleman and Amanda R. Riggleman, both of Paw Paw; two sisters, Cynthia L. Ruble of Old Town, Md., and Loretta C. Riggleman of Winchester; and his paternal step-grandfather, Ralph Keirsey of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with Maj. James Hipps officiating. Burial will be in Island Hill Cemetery, Forks of Capon, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donald J. Sullivan
Donald James Sullivan, 77, of Winchester, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Thorton, Colo.

Mr. Sullivan was born July 2, 1922, in Hagerstown, Md., the son of Francis Albert Sullivan and Myrtle Regina Roe Sullivan. He retired in 1977 as a plant supervisor with Zenith Television Co. in Chicago. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Winchester and was a veteran of World War II.

He married Celia Tyge on May 24, 1947, in Chicago.

Surviving is a sister, Bette Crisman of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Denis A. Segebartt and Pastor Phil Hamman officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Sullivan, William Sullivan, Thomas Conrad, Michael Conrad, Hartzel Brown, Leon Ediginger, Thomas Sullivan, Brit Bowman, Dave Conrad, Alphonso Hawkins, Evlogi Milanov, Youliy Milanov, and Pat Wood.

Mario DiFrank
Mario DiFrank, 87, of Osprey, Fla., died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at his home.

Mr. DiFrank was born June 30, 1912, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son Ceasare DiFrank and Catherine Vecchio. He was a dairy farmer in Ashburn for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Virginia Dunn DiFrank; his daughter, Jackie Sowers of Winchester; two sisters, Hilda Reid and Olga Martin-Linsing, both of Poughkeepsie; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, Leesburg, with Father Michael R. Duesterhaus officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Leesburg.

Marvin L. Fox
Marvin Leroy “Bud” Fox, 67, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Fox was born March 15, 1933, in Warfordsburg, Pa., the son of Sanford E. and Teressa Hendershot Fox.

He worked as an engine tester with Mack Truck in Hagerstown, Md., and retired in 1991.

He attended the Alpine School and Berkeley Springs High School.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019, Moose Lodge 1483, and the Junior Order of the United American Mechanics Council 117, all in Berkeley Springs.

He was married to Iris Jane King for 47 years.

Surviving with his wife, are his mother, of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Melissa J. Mundey and Marcia J. Coffman, both of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sons, Daniel M. Fox of Berkeley Springs, and David K. Fox of Kingwood, Texas; three sisters, Lorraine L. Henderson, Cheryl Ann Price, and Mary Ann McCarty, all of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Donald E. Fox of Berkeley Springs; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Presiding Elder Mark L. Faith officiating. Burial will be in Alpine Church Cemetery, Pious Ridge, Morgan County, W.Va., with military honors accorded by Tri-State Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a Junior Order Lodge memorial service at 8 p.m.
