Leroy M. Hill
Leroy Maryland Hill, 68, of Front Royal, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Lynn Care Center, Front Royal.

Arrangements with Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, are incomplete.

Robert L. Lewis
Robert Lloyd Lewis, 57, of Front Royal, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at his home.

Arrangements with Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, are incomplete.

Elly M. Staggs
Elly M. Staggs, 79, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. died Sunday March 18, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. Staggs was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Germany, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes B. Leuschner Szkudlarski. She was a retired photographer.

She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Berkeley Springs, the Order of the Eastern Star Berkeley Chapter 77, the Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 Auxiliary, the Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post 4109 Auxiliary, and the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary.

She was married to John William Staggs, who died in 1984.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. John S. Ledford and the Rev. Henry L. Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, where the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

Ethel J. Herring
Ethel Jeanette Herring, 80, of Winchester, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Frederick County.

Mrs. Herring was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Winchester, the daughter of Howard and Mattie Miller Sirbaugh. She was retired from Zeropack Co. in Winchester.

She was a member of Highland Avenue Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She was married to Joseph Paul Herring, who died in 1979.

Surviving are three sons, Donald Herring, Douglas Herring, and Dennis Herring, all of Winchester; a daughter, Irma “Susie” Kelly of Aptos, Calif.; two brothers, Conard Sirbaugh of Berryville and Julian “Jerry” Sirbaugh of Stephens City; two sisters, Betty Pingley of Winchester and Tuggy Poulson of Qauna, Malta; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, with Douglas Rinker officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Keith Herring, Justin Herring, Timmy Herring, Adam Phelps, Kevin Herring, and Stacey Herring.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

JoAnna D. Bennett
JoAnna Dale Bennett, 68, of HC 71, Box 129, Augusta, W.Va., died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bennett was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Kelly and Beula Wolford Grapes. She was a teacher’s aide in Hampshire County Public Schools and a 4-H leader.

She was a member of Zion Church of Christ and a Sunday school teacher.

She married Armand P. Bennett on Oct. 30, 1949, in Hampshire County.

Surviving with her husband are four daughters, Connie Newhouse of Augusta, Cindy Bowers of Boonesboro, Md., Cathy See of South Hampton, N.J., and Christina Brown of Winchester; a son, Clay Bennett of Augusta; and 14 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date at Zion Church of Christ.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave., Suite B, Winchester 22601; or to the Zion Church of Christ Building Fund.

Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth L. Reed
Elizabeth “Betsy” Lieblich Reed, 52, of Canaan Valley, W.Va., died at the home of her sister in Burke.

Mrs. Reed was born Jan. 21, 1949, in Arlington, the daughter of Col. Jerome Lieblich and Patti Lieblich. She co-owned and operated Canaan Realty in Davis, W.Va., and had previously worked on Capitol Hill.

She was a 1967 graduate of Woodson High School in Fairfax and a 1971 graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, N.C.

She was past race director of the Canaan Timberline Ski Team and the 1998 recipient of the Bob and Anita Barton Award for Tourism.

She was married to Cary W. Reed.

Surviving with her husband and her parents, of Winchester, are a daughter, Virginia “Jenny” Reed of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; a son, Spencer Reed, at home; and a sister, Patti S. Lieblich Woods.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church, Winchester.

The family will receive friends following the service at Westminster-Canterbury.

George Yost
George “Dick” Yost, 69, of Cleveland, formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Yost was born Jan. 24, 1932, in Goshen, the son of Peter Edison Yost and Bertha Zembrue Yost. He was an apartment manager in Cleveland and a member of the Salvation Army.

He was married to Martha Gainer.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Martha Yost of Cleveland; a sister, Pauline Shackelford of Berkeley Springs; and four brothers, Leroy Yost, Earl Yost, and Marvin Yost, all of Berkeley Springs, and Eddie Yost of Whitacre.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. Burial will be in Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Reynolds Store.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 501 Virginia Ave., Box 1679, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

William S. Sams
William S. Sams, 51, of Boyce, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Sams was born July 25, 1949, in Hot Springs, the son of Edsil R. and Lucille Bird Sams.

Surviving with his mother, of Berryville, are a daughter, Melonie Sams of McLean; three brothers, Edsil Sams of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Terry Sams of Prince William County, and Delbert Sams of Aldie; and four sisters, Dinah Sams of Charles Town, W.Va., Norma Burress of North Carolina, Sarah Plank of Maryland, and Tammy Eastion of Tulsa, Okla.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Herman O. Lee
Herman O. Lee, 77, of 380 Millwood Ave., Winchester, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Leatha D. Norvell
Leatha Dove Norvell, 99, of Winchester, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Arrangements with Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, are incomplete.

Katie B. Anthony
Katie B. Anthony, 89, of 124 Meadowbrook Place, Winchester, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Cartwright Funeral Home are incomplete.

Summers Service
A funeral for Alissa Ann Summers, whose obituary was published Feb. 28, 2001, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Louvenia Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, Front Royal.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Elsworth D. DeHaven
Elsworth Donald DeHaven, 72, of Massanutten Manor, Strasburg, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. DeHaven was born April 7, 1928, in Frederick County, the son of Normal H. and Inez Mary Adams DeHaven. He was an electrician with Bennies Electric Co. in Stephens City and an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of VFW Post 2123, Eagles Aerie 824, and Elks Lodge 867.

His first wife, Geraldine Michael DeHaven, died in 1965. His second wife, Betty Lou DeHaven, died in 1993.

Surviving are a son, Donald M. DeHaven of Stephenson; a stepson, Arthur Locke of Stephenson; two sisters, Zelda Miller and Aleane Wine, both of Winchester; a brother, Alfred DeHaven of Winchester; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A stepson, Donnie Steed, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cletus Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Frederick County, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Miller, Michael Wine, Bradford Wallace, Denver DeHaven, Matthew Wallace, Christopher Wine, Jeremy Whittaker, and Jack Cooley.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Patricia I. Martin
Patricia I. Martin, 69, of Inwood, W.Va., died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Martin was born May 20, 1931, in Gore, the daughter of George Loring and Gladys Himmelwright Gore. She was a cosmetologist and worked for 20 years at Bender’s Beauty Salon in Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church, Martinsburg.

She was married to Garland S. Martin.

Surviving with her husband are a son, G. Steven Martin of Winchester; a daughter, Susan Garrett of Martinsburg; a brother, Thomas L. Gore of Martinsburg; two sisters, Mildred Pierce of Martinsburg and Marie McBee of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Troy Mays officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood.

James K. Hutzler Sr.
James K. Hutzler Sr., 88, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mr. Hutzler was born Aug. 5, 1912, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of James K. and Effie Dailey Hutzler. He was owner of Hutzler Inc.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Martinsburg Moose Lodge 120, and Elks Lodge 778.

He was married to Joyce Denton.

Surviving are two sons, James K. Hutzler Jr. and David C. Hutzler, both of Berkeley County; a daughter, Susannah J. Swedberg of Columbia, Md.; a brother, Glen Ray Hutzler of Alexandria; a sister, Anna Ingram of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, W.Va., with his grandson, Student Pastor Adam D. McCulloch officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove United Methodist Cemetery, Frederick County.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Lewis Service
A graveside inurnment service for Ralph Edward Lewis will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Good Hope Cemetery, Front Royal, with the Rev. Gilbert Mack and the Rev. Louvenia Coleman officiating.

Mr. Lewis, 46, of Cross Junction, died Aug. 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., is handling arrangements.
