Hubert E. Heatwole
Hubert Elliott “Pete” Heatwole, 79, of Romney, W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Heatwole was born Feb. 6, 1921, in Romney, the son of Charles Hubert and Hazel Jackson Heatwole.

He was a retired letter carrier with the Romney Post Office.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member and elder of Romney Presbyterian Church.

He was married to Genevieve “Gennie” Larew for 49 years.

Surviving with his wife, are a son, David Elliott Heatwole of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Pamela Sue Heatwole See of Romney; a brother, Gene Jackson Heatwole of Cumberland; two sisters, Edith Lorraine McCauley of Petersburg, W.Va, and Betty Mae Deskins of Points, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Romney Presbyterian Church, with Dr. John S. Franklin officiating. Burial will be private in Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10016, or to a favorite charity.

Thelma L. Clark
Thelma Lydia Lewis Clark, 80, of Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Clark was born June 27, 1919, on Butlers Mountain in Renick, W.Va., the daughter of William Stewart and Annie Cochran Lewis. She was a beautician and self-employed.

She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

She married Paul McKinster Clark on May 6, 1950, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Clark died Feb. 15, 1974.

Surviving are two sisters, Flotie Boggs of Charles Town, W.Va., and Lockie Taylor of Stephens City.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shenandoah Memorial Park Chapel, with the Rev. Ruth C. Crum Stotler officiating.

Pallbearers will be Ray Cooper, Roy Cooper, Daniel Sibert, Jerry Boggs, Bobby Huff, and Thomas Merritt.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home.

Maynard H. Kline Sr.
Maynard Hite “Chuck” Kline Sr., 78, of 123 Ritenour Lane, Maurertown, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Kline was born June 13, 1921, in Shenandoah County, the son of George William and Martha Jane Neff Kline. He was a retired construction engineer and welder.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Hart, a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Sharp Shooters Medal.

He was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church, the Henry Knoxfield Lodge 349, AF&AM, of Alexandria, and Woodstock American Legion Post 199.

Surviving with his wife, Catherine Marie Kline, are four sons, Maynard H. Kline Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. , Michael B. Kline of Strasburg, Gary L. Kline of Maurertown, and Robert W. Kline of Edinburg; two daughters, Jane E. Price of Fishers Hill and Wanda K. Kaetzel of Charles Town, W.Va.; four sisters, Mary Catherine Snarr and Iva Mae Orndorff, both of Strasburg, Stella Virginia Cummins of Winchester, and Nina Louise Ramey of Springfield; and 11 grandchildren.

A son, John Kline, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Strasburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Brenda Biler and Pastor Robert Cypher officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77.

Pallbearers will be Maynard Kline Jr., Michael Kline, Gary Kline, Robbie Kline, Tom Kaetzel, and John Price.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Louise B. Unger
Louise Bryant Unger, 73, of Havre de Grace, Md., formerly of Berryville, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Citizens Care Center.

Mrs. Unger was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Clarke County, the daughter of William Randolph and Frances Elizabeth Bryant.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Havre de Grace.

She was married to Roy Franklin Unger for 55 years.

Surviving with her husband, are two daughters, Diane Terri Dashler of Dalton, Ga., and Linda Louise Borneman of Havre de Grace; a son, Roy Franklin “Skip” Unger Jr. of Front Royal; two sisters, Helen Elizabeth Lake of Stephenson and Evelyn Thomas Lake of Berryville; and five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Berryville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Moore and the Rev. John Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Barry Wilton Bryant, Neil Randolph Bryant, Stanley Sylvester Downs, Jesse Harman Fleming, Michael David Hardesty, and Harry Everett Lake.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Marion W. Melton
Marion Walton Melton, 80, of 1095 Audubon Road, Merritt Island, Fla., formerly of Winchester, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Melton was born June 9, 1919, in Richmond. She worked in the administrative offices of the State of Delaware Department of Education. She was a graduate of Pan American Business School in Richmond.

She was married to Howard L. Melton.

Surviving with her husband, are three sons, Howard L. Melton Jr. of Plantation, Fla., Dennis C. Melton of Cochranville, Pa., and Dale W. Melton of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, Ashton C. Walton Jr. of Oakbrook, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Lori Wilson Park.

Lawrence M. Horn
Lawrence M. “Bill” Horn, 71, of Clearbrook, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Horn was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Augusta County, the son of Calvin Eugene and Nora Beverley Horn. He was a bottler at Sanitary Dairy and a service station attendant.

Surviving are three sons, Dennis Monroe Horn and Douglas Eugene Horn, both of Front Royal, and William Nelson Horn of Clearbrook; a daughter, Doris Elaine Kinsey of Front Royal; a brother, Winfred Valree Horn of St. Charles, Mo.; three sisters, Norma Maxine Shipe and Wanda Faye Lawson, both of Front Royal, and Betty Lou Yowell of Clearbrook; and 10 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bobby Whetzel officiating.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Nicewarner Jr., Mike Nicewarner, David Good, Mike Reynolds, Kenny Burcham, and Ron Maner Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Jones Funeral Home.

Raymond L. Alley Sr.
Raymond Luther “Pud” Alley Sr., 67, of 100 Woodridge Court, Stephens City, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Alley was born March 2, 1932, in Tazewell, the son of Reese Jackson and Bessie Mae Jones Alley. He was a truck driver and had worked in packaging with Riverton Corp., retiring after 27 years.

He married Lillie Thomas on Aug. 2, 1957, in Tazewell.

Surviving with his wife, are three daughters, Karen Sue Shull of White Post, Mary Ann Floridan of Washington, Pa., and Linda Kay Riley of Gore; two sons, Raymond L. Alley Jr. of Middletown and David Reese Alley of Stephens City; a sister, Rosi Mae Shinnault of Bluefield, W.Va.; and two brothers, Johnny Joseph Alley Sr. of Winchester and Walter Alley of Wytheville.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eric Farel officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Ruby B. Borden
Ruby B. Borden, 92, of Front Royal, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Royal Haven Rest Home, Front Royal.

Mrs. Borden was born April 5, 1907, in Warren County, the daughter of James Robert and Pearl Agnes Clevenger Beatty. She was a retired beautician.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Shenandoah Rebekah’s Lodge 83, the South River Garden Club, Warren Memorial Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary, and the Home Demonstration Club. She had been a volunteer with the World War II Air Patrol.

She was married to Wilson Borden.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Reliance Cemetery, with Dr. R. Mark Jordon officiating.

Friends may call anytime at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.

William P. Sweeney
William P. “Pat” Sweeney, 84, of 123 Lakeview Drive, Woodstock, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in a nursing home in Woodstock.

Mr. Sweeney was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Richmond.

He was retired and had been an iron worker.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

He married Hilda T. Sweeney in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Sweeney died Dec. 31, 1995.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating.

Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Richard R. Gilmer
Richard Robert Gilmer, 97, formerly of Stephens City, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Gilmer was born May 27, 1902, in Augusta County, the son of Elbert G. Gilmer and Pearl Mae Weaver. He had worked for the former American Viscose Corp. in Front Royal.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A private service is planned.

Aaron W. Jones
Aaron Wayne “Ron” Jones, 39, of 11220 Soldiers Ridge Circle, Apt. 203, Manassas, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in Prince William Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born Aug. 30, 1960, in Charles Town, W.Va., the son of the Rev. George F. and Joan Underwood Jones. He was a telemarketing manager with MPO Corp. of Fairfax.

He was a 1978 graduate of Clarke County High School and attended Potomac State College in Keyser, W.Va.

He became a member of St. Luke Baptist Church in 1978. He moved his membership in 1990 to Mt. Airy Baptist Church, where he was director of the Men’s Chorus and the Mass Choir.

Surviving with his parents, of Berryville, are a son, Derrick Landon Fisher of Austin, Texas; his companion, Shearron Hall of Manassas; his paternal grandmother, Josephine A. Jones of Berryville; and a sister, Valenta M. Jones of Reston.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. George F. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, Franklintown, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Liggins, Kevin Dozier, Clyde Brown, Dennis Jones, Keith Corley, Samuel D. Jones, Tyler Payton, and Donald Wheichel.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Vickie S. Moton
Vickie Sue Moton, 38, of Route 1, Box 65, Baker, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Moton was born Sept. 2, 1961, in Winchester, the daughter of Richard and Hilda Anne Hockman McDonald. She worked at Capon Springs and Farms in Capon Springs, W.Va.

She received her G.E.D. in 1999 from Hampshire County High School.

She married David L. Moton on Sept. 2, 1989, in Wardensville, W.Va.

Surviving with her husband, and her mother, of Middletown, are a stepson, David L. Moton Jr. at home; two brothers, Eddie McDonald of Middletown and Jackie Hockman of Gore; a sister, Patsy Whetzel of Strasburg; and a half brother, Ricky McDonald of Grottoes.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, with the Rev. Sherwin Tharp officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Church Cemetery, Lebanon Church.

Pallbearers will be Charles Moton, Doug Alkire, Jeff Funkhouser, Dale Hodson, Frank Doley, and Dale White.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Elva L. Ashby
Elva Louise Ashby, 67, of 10 Barnett St., Berryville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Ashby was born July 6, 1932, in Bluemont, the daughter of Connie Marshall Shepherd and Viola Tinsman Shepherd.

She was a member of Providence Chapel United Methodist Church.

She married Claude Leon Ashby on July 9, 1947, in Frederick, Md. Mr. Ashby died Feb. 24, 1982.

Surviving are two sons, Allen Ashby of Berryville and Ronnie Ashby of Winchester; three daughters, Joyce Wilson, Vickie Taylor and Tammy Surface, all of Berryville; a sister, June Mercer of Bluemont; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Providence Chapel United Methodist Church, Clarke County, with the Rev. Mary Lock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wilton Shepherd, Steve Shepherd, George Sheppard, Kenneth Chamblin, Charles Mercer, and James Mercer.

Mildred V. Denny
Mildred Virginia Berg Denny, 77, of Jordan Run, W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Denny was born June 21, 1922, in Jordan Run, the daughter of Delphia Mae Berg.

She was a member of Cabins Assembly of God Church, Cabins, W.Va.

Surviving are a son, Jack J. Denny of Maysville, W.Va.; two daughters, Margaret V. VanMeter of Bushwood, Md., and Evelyn M. Ketterman of Winchester; two sisters, Leona Nesselrodt of Cumberland, Md., and Hilda Cosner of Mt. Storm, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cabins Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Steve Landis officiating. Burial will be in the Turner family Cemetery, Jordan Run.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Amelia E. Thomas
Amelia E. Thomas, 62, of Stephens City, formerly of Loudoun County, died Feb. 14, 2000.

Mrs. Thomas was born March 18, 1937, the daughter of Edward and Mary Virginia Lane Cook. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Winchester.

Surviving with her mother, of Woodbridge, are two sisters, Jeanette Johnson of Leesburg and Lillian Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three brothers, Edward Cook of Reston, Terry Cook of Manassas, and Laveron Cook of Harrisburg, Pa.; five children, Taylor C. Bell of California, Audrey F. Payne and Garry Beaner, both of Winchester, Charles Beaner Jr. of Stephens City, and Kenneth Beaner of Leesburg; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was Feb. 18 in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Lincoln. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Tibbs, Johnie Woodson, Andre Waters, Garry Beaner, Leonard Logan, and Wendell Smith.

Lyles Funeral Home, Purcellville, handled arrangements.

James A. Marks
James Albert Marks, 58, of Front Royal, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the home of his sister.

Mr. Marks was born May 7, 1941, in Chicago, the son of James E. and Stella Liszewski Marks. He was a machinist.

Surviving are his wife, Carol A. Marks of Shelby, N.C.; two sons, James E. Marks and Joseph A. Marks, both of Shelby; two brothers, Peter Marks of Plainfield, Ill., and Michael Marks of Oaklawn, Ill.; and two sisters, Theresa M. Peachey of Front Royal and Margaret M. Vari of Chicago.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Father William F. Ruehl officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Robert D. Smith
Robert Dewey Smith, 71, of Green Spring, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Green Spring, the son of George W. and Susan Saville Smith.

He retied in 1988 from CSX Railroad in Cumberland, Md., after 42 years.

He was married to Velma A. Frye.

Surviving with his wife, are two stepsons, Gerald D. Largent of Green Spring and John R. Largent of Ft. Knox, Ky.; a brother, Richard Smith of Staunton; two sisters, Hilda Foley of Green Spring, and Betty Schaidt of Old Town, Md.

A service is planned for a later date.

Edith Mossoff
Edith Mossoff, 86, of Winchester, formerly of Vineland, N.J., died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Mossoff was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was married to Julius Mossoff, who died in 1964.

Surviving are a daughter, June Bailey of Winchester; a sister, Vera Ostroff of Vineland; and a grandchild.

A private service is planned.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.
