Allen D. Hoover
Allen Douglas “Football” Hoover, 58, of 2731 Papermill Road, Winchester, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000.

Mr. Hoover was born Aug. 4, 1941, in Winchester, the son of Harry D. and Grace Henry Hoover. He worked for American Woodmark and retired in 1995 after 20 years. He was a former member of Berryville Moose Lodge 2139 and Winchester Eagles Aerie 824.

He married Bunee J. Harlan on March 13, 1958.

Surviving with his wife, are his father of Winchester, and his mother of California; his stepmother, Grace V. Hoover of Winchester; a sister, Tinker Brannon of Frederick County; a stepsister, Sherry McKinney of Winchester; and two brothers, Ricky Hoover of Stephenson and Darby Hoover of Winchester.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Leyland Collins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home.

Thomas K. Cochran
Thomas K. Cochran, 82, of Van Fossen Street, Winchester, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Cochran was born April 23, 1917, in Winchester, the son of G. Fred and Julia O’Leary Cochran. He retired in 1985 from Abex after 19 years and retired in 1995 from National Fruit Product Co. where he had worked in two separate tenures for 31 years.

He was a 1937 graduate of Handley High School.

He was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II and in the National Guard for 20 years.

He was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, Winchester Elks Lodge 867, the Cotillion Club, and Nautilus Fitness Center.

He married Frances C. Carpenter on Aug. 2, 1942, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Sandy O. Cochran of Winchester; and a brother, Eugene D. Cochran of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Ensogna Sr., Scott Carpenter, Mark Carpenter, Steve Noel, Eddie Dodson, Denis Doherty, Dr. James Laidlaw, Greg Goodman, and Reggie Hoelen.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Jones Funeral Home, where a Rosary service will be at 7 p.m.

Richard A. Miller
Richard A. “Dick” Miller, 61, of 129 Riverview C, Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Benefis Health Care, Great Falls, as the result of complications from open heart surgery.

Mr. Miller was born May 21, 1938, in Winchester. He was a graduate of James Wood High School and served in the Air Force, specializing in radar and computer programming, for 20 years. He retired with the rank of master sergeant. He worked for 12 years with Glacier State Electric in Great Falls, providing quotations and as a salesperson, until retiring in 1998. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Pilgeram 102 in Geraldine, Mont., and the Elks Lodge in Great Falls.

He married Norma Jean Spevac in 1963 in Geraldine, Mont.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Kevin J. Miller of Bozeman, Mont., and Kelvin R. Miller of Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Doris Ann Luker of Linden, Ala., and Nancy Faye Trenary of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; three brothers, Charles William Miller of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Robert Clinton Miller of Linden, Ala., and Ronald Edwin Miller of Winchester; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at O’Connor Memorial Chapel, Great Falls.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Marvin G. Liller
Marvin G. Liller, 76, of Augusta, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Liller was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Keyser, W.Va., the son of Marvin G. and Hazel Elizabeth Thompson Liller. He retired from the military in 1968 after 24 years. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, 505th RCT. He made combat jumps in Normandy and in Holland and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart. He held the rank of command sergeant major, E-9.

He was a member of Westernport American Legion Post 155 and VFW Post 1101 of Romney.

He was engaged to marry Jean Cline of Augusta, W.Va.

Surviving with his fiancee, are three daughters, Rebecca Sheridan of Galloway Township, N.J., Elizabeth Hensel of Mentor, Ohio, and Rosamond Pettorini of Columbus, Ohio; four sons, Earl Liller and William Liller, both of Browns Mills,N.J., John Liller of Vincentown, N.J., and Bruce Liller of Chase City; 18 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Two sons, Norman Liller and James Liller, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with Minister Daniel Stiltner, officiating.

Burial will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, W.Va., with military honors accorded by the Hampshire County veterans.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Alfred Smith
Alfred L. “Smitty” Smith, 77 of 511 S. Kent St., Winchester, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born April 2, 1922, in Nassau, The Bahamas, the son of Hiram D. Smith and Clara Dell McKenzie. He was a maintenance supervisor with Montgomery Wards and had retired.

He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he was treasurer and a member of the Steward Board, the Senior Choir, and Men’s Choir.

He married Gladys Greene on Nov. 25, 1974.

Surviving with is wife, are a son, Alfred L. Smith Jr. of Winchester; a step-son John Bradley of White Post; three sisters, Viola Smith, Ethelyn Rolle, and Lillian Wright, all of Nassau; two brothers, Hiram Smith and Leroy Smith, both of Nassau; and a grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Kevin Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Cartwright Funeral Home.

Ruth Ann Miller
Ruth Ann Miller, 58, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 25, 1941, in Whitacre, the daughter of Boyd Raymond and Edna Mae Crouse Waugh.

She was a reception/clerk at Cacapon State Park since the late 1980s. She had managed the restaurant at the lodge of the park during the late 1970s and was a cashier at Dugan’s Supermarket in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of the Pentecostal faith and attended Mt. Garfield School and Berkeley Springs High School.

She was married to Albert William Miller for 43 years.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Albert William “J.R.” Miller Jr. of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Teresa Lynn Bulick and Tina Marie Payne, both of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Pauline Waugh and Brenda Kay Goodman, both of Berkeley Springs, Hazel Shade of Great Cacapon ; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

A son, Boyd Wesley Miller, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew C. Collins Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery .

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary B. Dodson
Mary B. Dodson, 76, of Hilltop Terrace, Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Miss Dodson was born July 19, 1923, in Rappahannock County, the daughter of Stephen A. Dodson and Pauline Elliot Dodson. She was a waitress and a nursing home aide.

Surviving are four sisters, Mildred H. Lofton of Winchester, Catherine S. Emmons, Maxine M. Jenkins, and Doris E. Tobin, all of Stephens City; and two brothers, Bill C. Dodson of Stephens City and Stephen Ashby Dodson Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum, with James Mercer officiating.

Archibald M. Morgan II
Archibald Magill Smith “Bud” Morgan II, 92, of Ripon Lodge Farm, Rippon, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Smals Senior Care, Ranson, W.Va.

Mr. Morgan was born March 8, 1907, in Charles Town, W.Va., the son of Archibald Magill Smith Morgan and Sara Selby Shepherd Morgan.

He owned and operated Ripon Lodge Farm and had been an executive with General Motors for more than 41 years.

He was a 1921 graduate of Charles Town High School and starred in football. He attended West Virginia University and was a graduate of General Motors Tech School .

He was a lifelong member of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town. He was a member of Henry Kyd Douglas Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Adam Stephens Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

His wife, Joyce Marie Morgan died Dec. 13, 1989.

Surviving are a son, Archibald Magill Smith “Rusty” Morgan III of Ripon Lodge Farm; a daughter, Sarah J. “Sally” Morgan Snow of Winchester; a sister, Florence Morgan Clark of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Episcopal Church, Charles Town, with the Rev. Jack Weise and the Rev. John S. Alfriend officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

John F. Coleman
John Frances Coleman, 91, of Springfield, W.Va., formerly of Midland, Md., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Coleman was born July 12, 1908, in Midland, Md., the son of William T. and Mary Catherine Hixenbaugh Coleman. He worked for the B&O Railroad for 19 years as a car repairman and retired from the Department of Natural Resources, Forestry Division, after 17 years.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 662 of Keyser, W.Va.

Surviving are a brother, Joseph Coleman of Springfield; three sisters, Margaret Williams of Lonacony, Md., Ellen Iman of Springfield, and Catherine Robertson of Hamburg, N.Y.

A funeral was today at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating. Burial was in Springfield Hill Cemetery.

Charles D. Fretz
Charles Doran “Dorney” Fretz, 91, of 4598 N. Frederick Pike, Winchester, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Fretz was born April 17, 1908, in Phoenixville, Pa., the son of William A. and Bertha Miller Fretz. He was owner of Mobil Service Station in Phoenixville for 55 years. He was a Mason with Phoenix Lodge 75, AF&AM and a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Phoenixville. He was a T-5 with the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars, and a Bronze Arrow Head.

He married Eleanor M. Taylor on Oct. 2, 1941, in Valley Forge, Pa. Mrs. Fretz died Sept. 11, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Hawkins McFarland of Winchester; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Delvin-Rosmos-Kepp Funeral Home, Phoenixville, with the Rev. Linda S. Gruber, OCC, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Morris Cemetery, Borough of Phoenixville.

Susie Catherine Miller, 96, of 3129 John Marshall Highway, Strasburg, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Life Care Center, New Market.

Mrs. Miller was born July 13, 1903, in Top Not, the daughter of Franklin Oliver and Lura Belle Bly Miller. She was retired as supervisor at Aileen Inc. She was the oldest member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

She was married to Russell Lee Miller.

Surviving are two daughters, Rossell M. Griffey of Woodbridge and Sarah J. Kibler of Maurertown; a son, Harry F. Miller of Strasburg; a sister, Madolyn Pangle of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. William H. Hall II officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, great-grandsons, and nephews Tommy Kibler, Kelly Miller, Travis Utley, Floyd Ryman, Franklin Ryman, and Frank Pangle Jr.

Theodore A. Himes
Theodore A. “Hawkshaw” Himes, 83, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in Life Care Center, New Market.

Mr. Himes was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Augusta, Md., the son of John F. and Roslia L. Himes. He was a supervisor at Avtex and had retired.

He was married to Hazel Gallion.

Surviving two sons, Gary L. Himes of Miami, and Gilbert F. Himes of Chester Gap; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. James Burke officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Hazel E. Hooper
Hazel Elizabeth Hooper, 91, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.

Mrs. Hooper was born July 30, 1908, in Mt. Union, Pa., the daughter of Levi and Myra Cowan Wible. She was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, Berkeley Chapter 77 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the AARP.

She was a 1926 graduate of Mt. Union High School.

She married Alton L. Hooper on July 15, 1930. Mr. Hooper died Sept. 23, 1976.

Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor H. Effland of Berkeley Springs; a sister, Esther Hutchison of Bethlehem, Pa.; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mt. Union Cemetery, with the Rev. Kelly L. Scott officiating.

Nellie Elizabeth Brill McFarland, 83, of Bethel Grange Road, Winchester, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. McFarland was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Frederick County, the daughter of Henry Frank and Effie Brown Brill. She was a member of Round Hill United Methodist Church.

She married Albert N. McFarland on Nov. 9, 1935, in Kernstown.

Surviving are six sons, Albert L. McFarland of Winchester, Donald E. McFarland, Charles C. McFarland, and Larry D. McFarland, all of Frederick County, James E. McFarland of Dartsville, W.Va., and Robert L. McFarland of Huntingtown, Md.; three daughters, Shirley A. Gray and Cora “Sue” Wilson, both of Frederick County, and Darlene Combs of Shanks, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Frederick County.

Bonnie J. Martin
Bonnie J. Martin, 59, of Papermill Road, Winchester, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Martin was born July 18, 1940, in Petersburg, W.Va., the daughter of Ray Albert and Grace E. Vance Sites. She was a member of Bethany Hill Chapel Baptist Church.

She married Clayton M. “Mike” Martin on Oct. 1, 1955, in Hagerstown , Md.

Surviving with her husband, are four sisters, Mary Thorne of Petersburg, Arvella Combs and Janet Carlyle, both of Winchester, and Viola McUlty of Alexandria; three brothers, John Sites of Petersburg, and Norman Sites and Dorse Sites, both of Winchester; and a grandchild.

Two sons, Clayton M. “Mitch” M. Martin Jr. and Jeffrey M. Martin, are deceased.

Walter G. Davis Sr.
Walter Garland “Pete” Davis Sr., 61, of Route 2, Box 538, Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Davis was born April 23, 1938, in Hanging Rock, W.Va., the son of Solomon P. and Iva May Phares Davis. He was a carpenter with Union Local 2033. He was a member of Mt. View Church of the Brethren, Inwood, W.Va., the National Rifle Association, and the A.A.R.P.

He was a Webelos leader with Pack 49 in the 1970s and an avid fisherman and hunter.

He married Nancy Fay Kitts on Aug. 9, 1958, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Walter G. Davis Jr., and Joseph B. Davis, both of Bunker Hill; five sisters, Donal “Irene” Davis Wright of Brucetown, Mary Davis Stotler Alabaugh of Whitacre, Jessie Davis Stickley of Cumberland, Md., Virginia Davis Hubbard of Winchester and May Davis Kerns of Bunker Hill; three brothers, Parsie J. “P.J.” Davis of Alabama, and William A. Davis and Junior E. Davis, both of Bunker Hill; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack Julcher officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Ruth V. Grim
Ruth Virginia Grim, 80, of 110 Chalmers Court, Berryville, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Grim was born July 23, 1919, in Frederick County, the daughter of John Allen and Elizabeth Anna Perry Hartley. She was a part-time cook and dishwasher for four years with the former Roy’s Restaurant on the Old Town Mall and with Triangle Diner.

She was a member of Refuge United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Winchester Senior Citizens.

She married Harley Preston Grim on May 1, 1941, in Stephens City. Mr. Grim died Feb. 24, 1987.

Surviving are four daughters, Arbutus Elizabeth Taylor and Hilda Virginia McKee Albright, both of Winchester, and Janet Mae Hawkins and Marie Link, both of Stephens City; three sons, John Allen Grim, Harley Preston Grim Jr., and Donald Wayne Grim, all of Winchester; two sisters, Flora Ferrabee of Berryville and Violet Ambrose of Winchester; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Linda Jean Grim, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Refuge United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William C. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
