Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Jay E. Houpt
Jay Earl Houpt, 76, of 117 Red Fox Trail, Winchester, formerly of Somerset, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Houpt was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Somerset, the son of Robert P. and Grace Pifer Houpt. He was a supervisor with Somerset Foundry and co-owner of West Salisbury Foundry, retiring after 47 years.

He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of private, and received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars.

He was a member of Mount Zion Methodist Church, the First Christian Church of Somerset, and the Somerset Eagles Club.

He married Estella Dwire on July 23, 1965, in Cumberland, Md. Mrs. Houpt died Feb. 7, 2000.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda A. Hall of Houston, Lana J. Smith of Somerset, and Elaine J. Bishop of Winchester; two sisters, Dorothy Brant and Sarah Jane Creery, both of Somerset; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Halverson Funeral Home, Somerset. Burial will be in Husband Cemetery, Somerset.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, and from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Halverson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Hansel E. Lindamood
Hansel E. “Lindy” Lindamood, 69, of Stephens City, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Lindamood was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Shenandoah County, the son of Lloyd and Susie Helsley Lindamood. He served for 15 years as a police officer with the Winchester Police Department and had worked for 25 years as a self-employed builder and carpenter.

He was in the Air Force with the military police. He was a member of the Winchester Moose Lodge.

He married Ivy May Watkins in 1955 in Stephens City.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Michael L. Lindamood of Stephens City; a daughter, Linda Jean Bailey of Strasburg; and two granddaughters.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, with David Owings officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the chapel of Michael R. Phelps and Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City.

Dorothy J. Norris
Dorothy Jean Norris, 30, of Lost River, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

Ms. Norris was born July 5, 1970, in Cumberland, Md. She worked at the Christopher Peacock Cabinet Co. in Wardensville, W.Va.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Jean “DJ” Davis of Baltimore and Eujenna Ann “Jeana” Boone of Lost River; a son, David Edward Boone of Baltimore; and her companion, Charles O. “Chuck” Titus of Lost River.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, with the Rev. Carlyle McDonald officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Roy A. Renner Sr.
Roy Asbury “Dolly” Renner Sr., 76, of 102 E. Main St., Berryville, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Renner was born March 2, 1924, in Frederick County, the son of Charles A. and Sadie Wittingten Renner. He was a heavy equipment operator with Stuart M. Perry Inc. for 37 years and retired in 1989.

He was a musician and played guitar, fiddle, and mandolin.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the National Guard in the European Theatre.

He married Eunice Vaught on May 1, 1961, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Roy Renner Jr. of Berryville and Joseph Renner of Stephenson; two daughters, Patricia Fox and Shirley Brannon, both of Stephens City; a brother, Walter Renner of Winchester; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Dr. Bill Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Roy Sheets, Mike Perry, David Link, Jim Hainsworth, Denny Perry, and Larry Hardesty.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Enders Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 9 S. Buckmarsh St., Berryville 22611.

Nathleen O. Seal
Nathleen Oda Seal, 71, of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Seal was born June 10, 1929, in Pine Hills, Berkeley County, W.Va., the daughter of Odie and Golda Shanholtz. She had worked for the Perfection Garment Co. in Martinsburg, W.Va., for many years.

She attended Heritage Freewill Baptist Church in Inwood, W.Va.

She was married to Virgil Leo Seal, who died Sept. 14, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Virgil L. Seal Jr. and Clarence O. “Bucky” Seal, both of Bunker Hill; three daughters, Charlotte Buchanan and Rena Baker, both of Bunker Hill, and Deborah Seal of Delaware; three sisters, Violet Donivan and Anna Walls, both of Martinsburg, and Kathleen Ellis of Marlowe, W.Va.; two brothers, Wayne Shanholtz of West Virginia and Sylvester Shanholtz of Martinsburg; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va., with the Rev. Russell Wright officiating. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 7320 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas 75231.

Edith R. Stonebraker
Edith Rebecca Stonebraker, 86, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Arrangements with Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, are incomplete.

Judge Harold G. Potts
Judge Harold Gordon Potts, 84, of North Gayton Road, Richmond, formerly of Berryville, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Our Lady of Hope, Richmond.

Judge Potts was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Winchester, the son of Roy E. and Hazel Grier Potts. He was a retired judge and attorney in Clarke County.

He attended the College of William and Mary and earned a law degree from the University of Virginia.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the VFW.

He was married to Jean Iden, who died Dec. 4, 1985.

Surviving are three daughters, Jane Carol Zoeckler of Powhatan, Christina P. Conway of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Sallie P. Noonkester of Salem; a son, Harold G. Potts Jr. of Huntersville, N.C.; a brother, H. Richard Potts of Chapin, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Thursday at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. William K. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Memorials may be made to John H. Enders Fire & Rescue, 9 S. Buckmarsh St., Berryville 22611; or to Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Disorders Association, 10201 Lee Highway, Suite 210, Fairfax 20030.

Harry L. Shirley
Harry Lee Shirley, 72, of 541 Old Bethel Church Road, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Shirley was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Winchester, the son of Harry and Daisy Tucker Shirley. He was a master sergeant in the Army National Guard and retired after 37 years. He had been a police officer with the Winchester Police Department.

He married Virginia Lee Fogle on Oct. 1, 1947, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Terry L. Shirley of Stephens City; a daughter, Susan L. Dillard of Maryville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Darrell Waller officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Mickey Smith, John Snapp, Bobby Hawkins, Todd Barton, Greg Hockin, Richard Fletcher, and Paul “Bo” Wheeler.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Leona W. Funkhouser
Leona Willis Funkhouser, 86, of 225-24 Indian Hollow Road, Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Funkhouser was born March 22, 1914, in Grant County, W.Va., the daughter of Clyde W. and Effie Mae Rotruck Simmons. She was a seasonal worker for National Fruit Product Co., Zeropack, and Moore & Dorsey.

She was a member of Faith Revival Center, Albin.

She married Ermine E. Funkhouser on Feb. 18, 1990, in Albin. Mr. Funkhouser died Oct. 6, 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Carmen Juanita Miller of Winchester and Mae Haines of Three Churches, W.Va.; two sisters, Margie Simmons of Medley, W.Va., and Nina Newlin of Frederick County; a brother, the Rev. Charles Simmons of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren, including Linda Oates of Berryville, whom she raised; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Clarence Halterman, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Cletus P. Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Harry Jones, Marvin Breeden, Dan Oates, Frederick Cheshire, Gary Palmer, and Ronnie Palmer.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Carl R. Costello
Carl Ronald “Mike” Costello, 50, of Stephenson, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Costello was born Aug. 19, 1950, in Clarke County, the son of Carl B. and Marjorie J. Holtsclaw Costello. He retired after 16 years with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and had been employed by U.S. Government with the Airport Authority.

He was in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Berryville Moose Lodge, and the Blue Ridge Eagles Club.

He married Felicia Ann Hart on Nov. 16, 1986, in Fairfax.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, April Dawn Costello of Manassas; a brother, James Earl Costello of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and two sisters, Jane A. Heflin of Berryville and Barbara A. Simpson of Elizabeth City, N.C.

A service is planned for a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave., Winchester 22601; or to Greenwood Fire and Rescue Company, 809 Greenwood Road, Winchester 22602.

Clyde W. LaFollette
Clyde William LaFollette, 73, of Lehew, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., are incomplete.

Harry W. Hall
Harry W. Hall, 89, of Ocean Pines, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.

Mr. Hall was born in Strasburg, the son of Wesley D. and Elizabeth Mitchell Hall.

He was married to Norma Brooks.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Kitty Reading of Brandywine, Md., and Harryette Beck of North Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Hilda H. Brown of Strasburg; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was Monday at Little Church Chapel, Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Md.

Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury, handled arrangements.

Marie F. DeCarlo
Marie Fries DeCarlo, 88, of Carmel Highlands, Calif., formerly of Carmel Highlands, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. DeCarlo was born Feb. 5, 1912, in Winchester, the daughter of Lewis W. Fries. She had been area director of schools, supervisor, and a teacher with Montgomery County Schools in Montgomery County, Md.

She was a member of the Church of Wayfarer, where she was active with the United Methodist Women, missionary work, and education committees.

She was a 1929 graduate of Handley High School, and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1933 with a B.S. degree. She earned a M.S. degree in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1955 from the University of Wisconsin.

She was married to Col. Michael R. DeCarlo, who died in 1976.

Surviving are two daughters, Diana Lamson of San Rafael, Calif., and Anita DeCarlo of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; a son, Albert DeCarlo of Salt Lake City; and four grandchildren.

A private burial will be at the Presidio of San Francisco.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Wayfarer, Carmel, Calif., or to the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg.

The Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove, Calif., is handling arrangements.
