Caroline S. Tait
Caroline Stuart Tait, 79, of 108 Academy Lane, Winchester, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury.

Mrs. Tait was born Oct. 8, 1920, in King George County, the daughter of Richard Henry and Ina Wallace Stuart.

She was a claims analyst for Harleysville Insurance Co. and had attended Strayer Business College.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and had been secretary of the Winchester S.P.C.A. for 30 years.

She was the last member of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Douglas McCaleb officiating.

Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Hyla V. Nesmith
Hyla V. Nesmith, 98, of Yellow Spring, W.Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, in Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.

Mrs. Nesmith was born Feb. 9, 1902, in Capon Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Oliver and Nettie Pangle LaFollette.

She worked in the Canning Department at Capon Springs & Farms for more than 40 years. She was the oldest member of Hebron Lutheran Church, Yellow Spring.

She was married to Alston J. Nesmith, who died Nov. 7, 1985.

Surviving are two sons, Russell A. Nesmith of Wardensville, W.Va., and Clyde “Joe” Nesmith of Yellow Spring; three grandchildren; a step grandchild; a great-grandchild; and two step great-grandchildren.

A son, Donald R. Nesmith, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hebron Lutheran Church, with Pastor Richard Moll and Pastor R. Don Prange officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Weldon Nesmith, Michael Linaburg, Mike Rudolph, Stan LaFollette, Kevin Holliday, and Johnnie Oates.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Albert C. Peck III
Albert Charles “Little Albert” Peck III, 20, of Breezewood, Pa., formerly of Warren County, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Everette, Pa.

Mr. Peck was born Dec. 7, 1979, in Front Royal, the son of Albert Charles Peck II and Judy Ann Franklin Bollman.

He was a painter with RLB Services of Manassas.

He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Sons of the American Legion.

Surviving with his father, of Charles Town, W.Va., and his mother, of Breezewood, are his stepfather, Jim Bollman of Breezewood; his grandmother and step grandfather, Marie and Leonard Edwards of Front Royal; and three sisters, Jane Marie Peck of Stanley, and Mary Ann Murray and Rebecca Peck, both of Manassas.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. James Burke officiating. Burial will be in Refuge United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Bollman, Arnay Murray, Tyler Pittman, Dustin Barkman, Garret Cover, and David Franklin.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lawrence W. Sullivan
Lawrence W. “Willie” Sullivan, 79, of 300 Westminster-Canterbury Drive, Winchester, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Sullivan was born July 24, 1921, in Hagerstown, Md., the son of Charles Wilbur and Margaret B. Keller Sullivan.

He was a program assistant with the Federal Supply Service of the federal government and had retired after 20 years in the Air Force, with the rank of master staff sergeant. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church and the Bridge Club at Westminster-Canterbury.

He married Hester Phillips Moré on March 21, 1955.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Patricia Rose of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Lawrence W. Sullivan Jr. of Woodstock; three stepdaughters, Margaret Voigt of Washington Grove, Md., Kathryn Davis of Orlando, Fla., and Mary Louise Moré of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a stepson, Daniel Moré of Mt. Airy, Md.; two sisters, Hilda Adams of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Laverna Page of Milton, Del.; two brothers, John Sullivan of Hagerstown and Robert Sullivan of Waynesboro, Pa.; four grandchildren; 20 step grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Arthur S. Wolfe
Arthur S. Wolfe, 82, of P.O. Box 97, Romney, W.Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in the long term care unit of Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.

Mr. Wolfe was born March 3, 1917, in Bedford, Pa., the son of Wright and Sarah Wolfe.

He was a self-employed carpenter and plumber.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Vivian Wolfe, is deceased.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Baldwin Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. James Mou officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends one hour before the time of the service at the funeral home.

Louise V. Richard
Louise Virginia Wilson Richard, 89, of Susan B. Miller Nursing Home, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the nursing home.

Mrs. Richard was born Nov. 7, 1910, in Strasburg, the daughter of William Jordan and Mary Hester Good Wilson.

She was married to John Baxter Richard.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Ellen Conner of Strasburg and Gladys Hockman of Stuarts Draft; three stepdaughters; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Betty June Brill Campbell, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.

Pallbearers will be Peter Flynn, Justin Flynn, Brenton Flynn, Dan McElhenny, and Tyler McElhenny.

The family will receive friends one hour before the time of the service at the funeral home.

Elwood D. Patterson
Elwood Davis “Pat” Patterson, 78, of Parkway Street, Winchester, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Patterson was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Winchester, the son of Jesse D. and Lula M. Patterson. He owned and operated Pat’s Cab in Winchester for 41 years.

He married Patricia A. Wolford on March 20, 1954, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Donald D. Patterson of Indianapolis and Steven D. Patterson of Winchester; three daughters, Rhonda K. Copenhaver, Terri A. Pruitt, and Kimberly M. Patterson, all of Winchester; a brother, Julian L. Patterson of Winchester; a sister, Irene Nott of Hagerstown, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Ronald Snodgrass officiating.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Raymond F. Curtis
Raymond F. Curtis, 54, of Winchester, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Curtis was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Greenspring, W.Va., the son of Basil and Sarah N. Cheshire Curtis.

He worked at Pep Boys Auto Parts and was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge.

Surviving are a son, Raymond F. Lewis of Kingsville, Md.; a daughter, Tina S. Lewis of Towson, Md.; a brother, Carroll E. Lewis of Glen Rock, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Baldwin Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with the Rev. Douglas Shepherd officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

James W. Edge
James W. Edge, 90, of Stephens City, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.

Arrangements with Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Stephens City, are incomplete.

Loyd S. Milhon Sr.
Loyd S. “Beezer” Milhon Sr., 70, of Stephens City, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Milhon was born June 30, 1930, in Frederick County, the son of Venner C. and Hilda Racey Milhon.

He had worked for Valley Food Co.

He attended Mt. Pleasant-Lamp’s United Methodist Church.

He married Betty Wilson on July 8, 1950, in Frederick County.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Michael Milhon and Loyd S. “Bugs” Milhon Jr., both of Frederick County; three daughters, Lola Milhon of Clarke County, Angela Hepner of Frederick County, and Sidney Butler of Stephens City; three sisters, Freda M. Arnold, Peggy G. Brewer, and Patricia M. Shell, all of Frederick County; two brothers, Clifton M. Milhon and Jerry S. Milhon, both of Frederick County; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, with the Rev. Cletus P. Palmer officiating.

Pallbearers will be Steve Campbell, Sam Garber, Jerry Hytry, James Barr, Gerald Phelps, and Hassel Lindamood.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City.

Lester L. Williams
Lester Lee Williams, 71, of 110 Chalmers Court, Berryville, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Williams was born April 12, 1929, in White Post, the son of Frank T. and Mary E. Morris Williams.

He was a cement truck driver and an Air Force veteran.

He was married to Mabel Helen Peyton, who died Oct. 6, 1993.

Surviving are three sons, Gregory Williams of Stephens City, Robert Williams of Brentwood, Texas, and Wayne Williams of Winchester; three daughters, Wendy Wise and Robin Christian, both of Front Royal, and Jeannette Williams of Staunton; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Charles “Buster” Jackson Community Cemetery, White Post, with the Rev. Gilbert M. Mack Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Anna B. O’Boyle
Anna Belle O’Boyle, 79, of 341 Sheridan Ave., Winchester, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. O’Boyle was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Strasburg, the daughter of J. Elwood and Vernie M. Strosnider Snyder.

She was a secretary with the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., and then with the Winchester Chapter of the American Red Cross.

She had attended Mary Washington College.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

She married Vincent O’Boyle on July 15, 1950, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband is a son, Timothy O’Boyle of Sanford, N.C.

A son, Brian O’Boyle, is deceased.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ewart H. Wyle Jr. officiating. Burial will be private.

Susan C. Sanders
Susan Custer Sanders, 57, of Savannah, Ga., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Rochester, Minn., and lived in Savannah since 1976.

She attended Hollins College.

She was an active member of the Landings Club, the Landings Women’s Golf Association, and the Georgia State Golf Association.

She was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

She was married to Dr. Herbert F. Sanders Jr.

Surviving with her husband are a son, Herbert F. Sanders III of Savannah; a daughter, Tina Pinchback of Los Angeles; two sisters, Ellen Morgan of Los Angeles and Linda Russell of Winchester; a brother, Dr. Monford D. Custer III of Temple, Texas; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Savannah.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Home, Hodgson Chapel, Savannah.

Joshua G. Place
Joshua Gore Place, 82, of Route 1, Box 475, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Place was born May 7, 1918, in Frederick County, the son of Robert E. and Effie Dick Place.

He had worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation and was a groundskeeper for 14 years at Cacapon State Park. He had formerly owned and operated Place’s Manufacturing Co. in Cross Junction.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 60 and VFW Post 4019, both of Berkeley Springs.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, where he was Sunday school superintendent for 37 years. He was a member of the Union Chapel Methodist Men’s Group, the United Commercial Travelers, and the volunteer fire departments of Gainesboro, Reynolds Store, and South Morgan County, W.Va. He was a charter member and the first president of Gainesboro Ruritan Club, where he was active for 43 years.

He married Goldie V. Whitacre on Aug. 10, 1939, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Fremont R. Place and Edward T. Place, both of Winchester, and David E. Place of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Helen Gess of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, with the Rev. Roger Powell and the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

John Peter Artz, 90, of 271 W. Washington St., Strasburg, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Artz was born Dec. 19, 1909, in Woodstock, the son of James Mayberry and Lettie Schaeffer Artz.

He was a former member of Strasburg Town Council, the Strasburg Chamber of Commerce, and the Strasburg Lions Club.

He was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church and a former member of United Methodist Men.

He was married to Anna Rebecca Cayton.

Surviving are a son, James S. Artz of Louisa; a daughter, Sue A. Grimes of Strasburg; two sisters, Lois Sheetz and Alice Isner, both of Woodstock; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Brenda Biler officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Leonard M. Rudolph
Leonard Marshall “Goose” Rudolph, 83, of HC 63, Box 333, Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Rudolph was born July 27, 1917, in Wardensville, the son of Elizah Z. and Edith Garrett Rudolph. He was a farm laborer.

He was a member of Wardensville United Methodist Church and the Wardensville Senior Center. He helped to deliver Meals on Wheels for Hardy County, W.Va., residents.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, with the Rev. Sherwin Tharp officiating. Burial will be in Heishman Cemetery, Wardensville.

Pallbearers will be Tom Moton, Charles Moton Jr., Joseph A. Moton, David Moton, David Moton Jr., and Jinedean Arbaugh.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
