Bernice E. Rogers
Bernice Elizabeth Rogers, 96, of White Post, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at the home of her granddaughter, Gloria Spriggs, with whom she lived.

Mrs. Rogers was born May 29, 1904, in Warren County, the daughter of John and Nannie Palmer Ritenour. She worked at Schwarzenbach-Hubert Silk Mill in Front Royal for 48 years.

She was a member of Front Royal United Methodist Church.

She was married to Elick Henry Rogers.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Wilson of Chicago, Ill.; a granddaughter; 10 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Cynthia Corley officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Poe, Lyle Beatty, Jerry Weissberg, William Settle III, Max Kretzer, Charlie Spriggs, and Clyde McDaniel.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary R. Doman
Mary Ruth Doman, 96, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Doman was born July 27, 1904, in Martinsburg, W.Va., the daughter of Charles H. Bowers and Minnie A. Dick.

She was married to Herbert A. Doman, who died in 1961.

Surviving are two brothers, James William Bowers of Martinsburg and Kenneth Bowers of Fort Charlotte, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Bowers of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Jessie Bowers of Chicago; a stepson, James Doman of Romney, W.Va.; and two stepdaughters, Elaine Johnson of Akron, Ohio, and Geraldine Kuykendall of Morgantown, W.Va.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Asbury Cemetery, Baker, W.Va., with Minister Robert Jeffreys officiating.

McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., is handling arrangements.

Ruth S. Chanda
Ruth S. Chanda, 87, of Covenant Shores, Wash., formerly of Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Mercer Island, Wash.

Mrs. Chanda was born Jan. 1, 1913, in St. Cloud, Minn.

She had been a secretary at St. Cloud Teacher’s College and an administrative assistant in the Tax Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

She was a volunteer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winchester.

She married John Chanda Jr. on June 15, 1944, in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Dean of Mercer Island; a sister, Lucille Wilfand of Bethesda, Md.; and a grandson.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mercer Island.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2142 Back Mountain Road, Winchester 22602.

Carol A. LaSalle
Carol Ann LaSalle, 64, of Baker, W.Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her home.

Arrangements with McKee Funeral Home, Baker, are incomplete.

Ronald G. James
Ronald Glenn James, 49, of Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at his home.

Mr. James was born May 7, 1951, in Washington, D.C., the son of Thomas D. and Beverlee Hilda James.

He was an Army veteran.

Surviving are a son, Glenn James of Fort Meade, Md.; and four brothers, Leroy James and Bryan James of Augusta, Thomas David James of Crofton, Md., and Michael W. James of Waldorf, Md.

A funeral will be at 8 p.m. today at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Bladensburg, Md.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gladys P. Thompson
Gladys Peters Thompson, 77, of Leesburg, formerly of Winchester, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 28, 1923, in Ferrum, the daughter of Samuel Luther and Mary Kelley Peters.

She retired from Mount Weather after 31 years and had worked as clerk and operator for the C&P Telephone Co. in Leesburg.

Surviving are two sons, Floyd Kelley Thompson of Frederick County and James Alton Thompson of Leesburg; a brother, Frank Peters of Floyd; three sisters, Tempest Reed of Christiansburg, June Virts of Lovettsville, and Lucy Smith of Frederick County; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Lovettsville Union Cemetery, Lovettsville, with the Rev. Osborn Hough officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Ladies Board of the Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mable Breeden
Mable Breeden, 63, of Woodbridge, formerly of Winchester, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Breeden was born Oct. 28, 1936. She was a member of Winchester Eagles Club.

She was married to George Breeden.

Surviving are two daughters, Angela J. Breeden of Beaufort, S.C., and Linda P. Schorr of St. Helena, S.C.; three sons, Frank J. Breeden of Savannah, Ga., George Breeden Jr. of Woodbridge, and Kevin Goodrich of St. Helena; two sisters, Mary J. Crosen and Sandra Newlin, both of Winchester; a brother, James E. Wiggins of Dale City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Thomas Dean Goodrich, is deceased.

A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Miller Funeral Home, Woodbridge. Burial will be in Stafford Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wayne L. Cooley Jr.
Wayne Leo Cooley Jr., 37, of 4492 St. David’s Church Road, Fort Valley, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond.

Mr. Cooley was born May 30, 1963, in Los Angeles, the son of Wayne Leo and Marjorie Ann Lennie Cooley.

He was a house painter and self-employed.

He was married to Wendy Leigh Whitlock.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Nicholas Cooley of Ottumwa, Iowa, Anthony Cooley and Jeremy Cooley, both of Fort Valley; three daughters, Melissa Cooley, Angela Cooley, and Kimberly Cooley, all of Fort Valley; two sisters, Shelleena Haga and Marie Settle, both of San Antonio, Texas; and his maternal grandmother, Edith Lennie of San Antonio.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Keith Warren officiating.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the funeral home.

Lena C. Ludwig
Lena Catherine Ludwig, 87, of Baker, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at E.A. Hawse Continuous Care in Baker.

Mrs. Ludwig was born Feb. 21, 1913, in Rio, W.Va., the daughter of David Dove and Julia Gochernour Dove.

She was married to Willie Ludwig.

Surviving are two sons, Wayne Ludwig of Gore, and Owen Ludwig of Berryville; four grand children, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leornard Ludwig.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Baker, with the Rev. Carl Moore officiating.

Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery in Baker.

The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Dr. Richard Werth
Dr. Richard Werth, 80, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Dr. Werth was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Berlin, Germany, the son of Dr. Ernest and Alice Kürzinger Werth.

He was a teacher and an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the America Legion Post 41 of Silver Spring Md. He was a member of the Washington Performing Arts Society and the National Symphony Orchestra.

He married Pelagra Gorgolon in Yellow Spring, W.Va.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Dr. Charles R. Werth of Lubbock, Texas, and Robert M. Werth of Alexandria; two daughters, Marice C. Werth of Vienna and Lennice F. Werth of Crewe; and five grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Margaret S. Farmer
Margaret Spencer Farmer, 85, of Harvest Drive, Winchester, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Farmer was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Charles Roscoe and Mary Leona Baylor Spencer.

She was a certified dental assistant.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Henderson, Ky., the Daughters of the American Revolution-Washington Descendants, the Order of the Eastern Star of Versailles, Ind., the National Society of Colonial Dames-XVII Century, and the National Society of Magna Carta Dames and Barons.

She married Edward Lambert Farmer on May 13, 1961, in Catonsville, Md.

Surviving are a daughter, Sally Jean Sullivan of Winchester; a son, Richard Spencer Arnold of West Hartford, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Dr. Julie Farmer of New York, N.Y.; a stepson, Edward Lambert Farmer Jr. of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fernwood Cemetery, Henderson, Ky., with the Rev. Ric Holiday officiating.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Henderson, 338 Third Street, Henderson, Ky. 42420.

Mary R. Hetzel
Mary Randolph Smith Hetzel, 59, of RFD 2, Charles Town, W.Va., formerly of Blacksburg, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Hetzel was born March 5, 1941, in Winchester, the daughter of Mary Rogers Smith and Robert Randolph Smith II.

She was a registered nurse. She was a 1959 graduate of Stuart Hall and a 1963 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Nursing.

She was a member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church, the Blacksburg Garden Club, and the Virginia Tech Faculty Wives Club.

She married Glen H. Hetzel in 1964 in Njoro, Kenya, East Africa.

Surviving with her husband and her mother, of Charles Town, are two sons, Dr. Robert L. Hetzel of Charleston, S.C., and Peter H. Hetzel of Charles Town; a brother, Robert R. Smith III of Naples, Fla.; and two sisters, Ruth S. Pritchard and Elizabeth S. Beamer, both of Charles Town.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wickliffe Church, Clarke County.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Claytor S. Grove
Claytor S. Grove, 88, of Front Royal, formerly of Rockland, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, in Royal Haven Rest Home.

Mrs. Grove was born June 8, 1912, in Tazwell County, the daughter of Benjamin and Leola Brown Steele. She retired as cafeteria manager at John S. Mosby Academy and had worked in the cafeteria of Warren County High School.

She was a member of Rockland Community Church for 50 years.

She was married to Charles Melton “Mutt” Grove.

Surviving are a son, Charles M. Grove Jr. of Rockland; a daughter, Shirley Grove Singhas of Front Royal; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Joseph Swack officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Brian Grove, Ernie Grove, Stuart Showers, Steve Bowman, Buford Steele, and Thomas Megeath.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

German G. Carver
German George Carver, 96, of 5407 German St., Stephens City, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Carver was born May 11, 1904, in Frederick County, the son of George B. Carver and Ella Foster Carver Johnson.

He was a farmer and a security guard at M.J. Lime Co. He was retired from Houston Wood Housing Construction in Dale City.

He was a member of the Presbyterian faith.

He was married to Suzie Neff.

Surviving are two daughters, Helen Hege and Thelma Newlin, both of Stephens City; three sons, Earl Carver and Beverly Carver, both of Stephens City, and Robert “Bobby” Carver of Cross Junction; two half sisters, Ruby Wolfe of Star Tannery and Peggy Brill of Winchester; 31 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Herbert K. Seeman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jeannie A. Crouse
Jeannie Aldin Crouse of Winchester died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth S. Vaughn Jr. of Berryville and William C. Vaughn of Woodstock; two sisters, Muriel Ambrose of Winchester and Virginia Sousa of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and a brother, Gerald Brown of Winchester.

A private service is planned.

Beatrice M. Mannon
Beatrice M. Mannon, 74, of Yarnell Court, Front Royal, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Mannon was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Roanoke, the daughter of David R. and Amelia Austin Board. She was a caretaker for the elderly.

She was married to David H. Mannon.

Surviving are five daughters, Susan J. Mitchem of Front Royal, Diana Bishop of Newburg, Mo., Joyce Goforth of Springfield, Bonnie Bostic of Fairfax, and Linda Mannon of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Virginia Deel of Portsmouth and Geneva Fransico of Petersburg; a brother, Elbert Board of Jackson, Miss.; and 13 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.

Helen E. Riley
Helen Elizabeth Riley, 66, of HC 61, Box 12F, Augusta, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Mrs. Riley was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Garland E. and Lula Milleson Moreland.

She was a teacher’s aid for 26 years for the Hampshire County school systems.

She was a member of Augusta Church of Christ and the Dorcas Circle of the church.

She married Paul E. Riley on April 3, 1953, in Oldtown, Md.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Tracy V. Riley of Houston, Mark E. Riley of Lock Haven, Pa., and Matthew A. Riley of Cumberland; two brothers, Carroll Moreland of Seaside, Calif., and Giles Roger Moreland of Paw Paw, W.Va.; three sisters, Glenna Strother of Augusta, Irene Kasecamp of Newark, Del., and Josephine Lambert of Levels, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Augusta Church of Christ, with Jerry Timbrook, minister, and Pastor Philip Strunk officiating. Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery near Paw Paw.

Pallbearers will be John Llewellyn, Gene Frye, Harold Mowery, Danny Peer, Virgil Peer Jr., and Herbert “Sonny” Veach.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Alice M. Tunis
Alice May Tunis, 94, of Aberdeen Place, Winchester, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Tunis was born May 28, 1906, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Francis and Alice L. Pyle Blakeney.

She married Alexander Tunis on May 14, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Surviving are a son, George Gray of Palm Desert, Calif.; two daughters, Dorothy Gray Wright of Winchester and Alice Preston of West Warwick, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston, R.I.

Bessie A. Doyle
Bessie A. Doyle, 98, of Capon Springs, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at the Money Residence, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Mrs. Doyle was born Feb. 5, 1902, in Capon Springs, the daughter of Riley and Fannie Brill Dunlap.

She worked in the bakery of Capon Springs and Farms.

She was a member of Willow Chapel United Methodist Church, Capon Springs. She was a charter member of Wardensville VFW Post 2102 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was married to John Doyle.

Surviving are a son, Clarence Shoemaker of Rockville, Md.; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, W.Va., with the Rev. Rob Lovett officiating. Burial will be in Timber Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, High View, W.Va.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
