Nancy A. Lichliter
Nancy Ann “Nan” Lichliter, 76, of 330 Chinkapin Drive, Stephens City, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Lichliter was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of Chester and Helen Hochstrasser. She worked as a librarian for 42 years, retiring on June 15, 1989, from Frederick County Schools.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She married Vernon L. Lichliter on June 19, 1950, in Massachusetts.

Surviving with her husband are a son, William Lee Lichliter of Altamont, N.Y.; a daughter, Cynthia Quiggly of Clermont, Ga.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, with the Rev. David R. Burrough officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Buck, Daniel Lichliter, Jim Cooley, Bob Poehner, Bruce Shuster, and Tom Benedett.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Elsie G. Ritter
Elsie Geneva Ritter, 91, of 227 Throughwood Trail, Winchester, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Ritter was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Stephens City, the daughter of John and Laura Pearl Lanham Derflinger. She was a homemaker and retired as a seasonal worker at National Fruit Products.

She attended Mount Pleasant-Lamps United Methodist Church and was a member of the Stephens City Senior Citizens.

Her first husband, Edward Linaburg, died in 1942. Her second husband, Venner Ritter, died in 1964.

Surviving are four sons, Theodore Derflinger of Adamtown, Md., and Edward Linaburg Jr., Franklin Linaburg, and Virgil Ritter, all of Winchester; seven daughters, Edith Pluck of Drexel Hill, Pa., Nancy Strosnider of Stephens City, Charlotte Ellis of Middletown, Kathleen Minter of Gore, and Jessie Orndorff, Judy Shugars, and Patsy Lockey, all of Winchester; a stepdaughter, Esther Linaburg Boyd of Winchester; a sister, Jessie Derflinger Johnson of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 42 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

A son, John Linaburg, and a daughter, Helen Wilkins, preceded her in death.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Erback officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Pluck III, Forrest Goode, Ed Ellis, Jeffrey Boyce, Frank Linaburg, and Darryl Shugars.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Bennie A. Crim
Bennie A. Crim, 76, of Senseney Road, Winchester, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Crim was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Clarke County, the son of Charles A. and Mary Lake Crim. Mr. Crim was retired as a self-employed dairy farmer. He was a member of Crums United Methodist Church, Berryville.

He married Lenora L. “Lee” Foltz on Aug. 21, 1943, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Phillip A. Crim and Marc W. Crim, both of Clarke County; two daughters, Sharon “Cookie” Michael of Clarke County and Barbara Jean Crim-Largent of Stephens City; two brothers, Donald O. Crim and David O. Crim, both of Clarke County; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Gary Feldon officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Christopher DuPlantis, Scott Crim, Michael DuPlantis, Jason Crim, Alex Michael, and Benjamin Burkhart.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

William L. Hamilton
William Lewis Hamilton, 65, of 100 Massanuten Manor Circle, Strasburg, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mr. Hamilton was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Shenandoah County, the son of James Arthur and Beaulah Mae Pultz Hamilton. He was a retired auto mechanic and heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorthea M. Andrews of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a brother, Charles Hamilton of Winchester; three grandchildren; and two step-grandsons.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Revs. Carlyle McDonald and John D. Sterrett III officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mervin Keller, Carlton McDonald, John Bailey, Henry Peyton, Wayne Smith, and Jennings Lichliter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and meet there at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Willard E. Powell Sr.
Willard Edward “Bill” “Daffodil” Powell Sr., 73, of Front Royal died Wednesday, July 12, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Powell was born on July 1, 1927, in Hanging Rock, W.Va., the son of Roy Alton and Gladys Margaret Keister Powell.

He was a retired courier for Emory World Wide. Mr. Powell was a member of the Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member and past president of Rivermont Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Bennett’s Chapel United Methodist Church and served as superintendent, teacher, and choir director. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the South Warren Ruritan Club.

He was married to Peggy Printz Powell for 52 years.

Surviving with his wife are a son, W.E. “Bill” Powell Jr. of Front Royal; two daughters, Cynthia Lee Ellis of Winchester, and Joy Faith Powell of the their home; two brothers, Robert Baker Powell of Front Royal and Ralph Allen Powell of Manassas; two sisters, W. Ramona Campbell of Manassas and Mary Dean Manning of Partlow; a stepsister, Linda Santos of Timonium, Md.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bennett’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peg Mitchell and former pastors officiating. Burial will be in Bennett’s Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be members of Rivermont Volunteer Fire Department.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Edward Iden “Hoggie” Ritenour, 78, of 115 W. Whitlock Ave., Winchester, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in his home

Mr. Ritenour was born July 29, 1921, in Clarke County, the son of Howard Frank and Nathella Pearl Ritter Ritenour.

He was a retired orchard attendant for Kent Barley Orchards and a member of Meadow Mills Church of the Brethren.

He married Ruby Young on Sept. 26, 1971, in Stephens City.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Connie Jean Shoemaker and Rebecca Lynn Ritenour, both of Winchester, and Bonnie Jane Reese of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; five stepchildren, Kenneth Allen Young of Elkins, W.Va., Robert Lee Linaburg of Gore, Deborah Kaye Diffenderfer of Boyce, and James Luther Linaburg and Joseph Lawrence Linaburg, both of Winchester; four brothers, Carlton Ritenour of Stephens City, Amos Ritenour of Middletown, Cecil Ritenour of Boyce, and Carroll Ritenour of Winchester; two sisters, Isabell Nethers of Stephens City and Edna Middleton of Winchester; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, Stephens City, with the Rev. Fred Mauck officiating. Burial will be at Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Frederick County.

Aldon H. Rudacille
Aldon Harrison Rudacille, 83, of Front Royal, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mr. Rudacille was born May 28, 1917, in Browntown, the son of Sarah Fox and Isaac Rudacille. He was retired from the Town of Front Royal. He was a member of Front Royal United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Giles B. Cook Post 53 American Legion, VFW Post 1860, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows No. 374.

He was married to Madeline Mae Rudacille.

Surviving with his wife are a son, J.C. Rudacille of Front Royal; and a sister, Goldie Gardener of Shady Side, Md.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. James Burke and the Rev. Bob Jones officiating.

Clarice G. Steppe
Clarice Geneve “Genny” Gochenour Steppe, 71, of 1203 Harman Road, Mauretown, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Steppe was born Oct. 25, 1928, in Rio, W.Va., the daughter of Russell L. and Ollie E. Gochenour. She was retired from Aileen Inc., Woodstock. She was a member of Patmos Lutheran Church, Woodstock.

She was married to Samuel H. Steppe.

Surviving are two daughters, Deborah L. Steppe and Sandra Kay Steppe, both of Mauretown; a sister, Lillian Sager of Winchester; and two brothers, Virgil Gochenour and Russell L. Gochenour Jr., both of Toms Brook.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Roy Butler officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock.

Romeo G. Lytton
Romeo Galen Lytton, 80, of Edinburg, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, in his home.

Mr. Lytton was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Quicksburg, the son of John P. and Orpha Zirkle Lytton. He worked as a textile worker for American Viscose, Front Royal. He was retired from Aileen, Woodstock.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Hamburg.

He married Fern Marie Funkhouser on Aug. 14, 1948. Mrs. Lytton died on Sept. 22, 1996.

Surviving are four sons, Ronnie Lytton and Danny Lytton, both of Edinburg, Ricky Lytton of Woodstock, and Bobby Lytton of Stephens City; a daughter, Cheryl Truban of Winchester; a sister, Fern Lytton of Quicksburg; and three brothers, Allen Lytton of Fairfax, and Fred Lytton and Olga Lytton, both of Edinburg.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenn Nilsen and the Rev. John F. Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Leona V. Nichols
Leona Virginia Nichols, 82, of 2786 N. Frederick Pike, Winchester, died Friday, July 13, 2000 in her home.

Mrs. Nichols was born on June 13, 1918, in Bunker Hill, W.Va., the daughter of Joel Henry and Nellie Unger Brannon.

She was a member of the Winchester Church of God.

She was married to Marvin Nichols, who died in 1972. Her first husband, William Umbenour, died in 1947.

Surviving are a daughter, Leona “Susie” Newlin; four sons, Charles W. Umbenour, Douglas J. Umbenour, Max J. Umbenour, and Willard V. Umbenour, all of Frederick County; a sister, Bessie E. Rinker of Frederick County; numerous grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth and the Rev. George Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Tomahawk Cemetery, Berkeley County, W.Va.

Leonore Y. Pownall
Leonore Yvonne Pownall, 39, of Winchester, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, in University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

Miss Pownall was the daughter of Robert C. and Phyllis Fogleman Pownall of White Post. She was an administrative assistant with Noland Co., Winchester.

Surviving with her parents are a son, Joseph Sapienza of New York; a sister, Deborah Nunez of Virginia Beach; and a brother, Harry Pownall of Front Royal.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at St. Stephens Catholic Church, Middleburg. Burial will be in Emmanuel Cemetery, Middleburg.

Jean E. Barbe
Jean Elizabeth Barbe, 66, of Burlington, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.

Mrs. Barbe was born June 29, 1934, in Romney, W.Va., the daughter of Harry D. and Pearl Pownall Bowman.

She was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, W.Va.

She was married to William “Ed” Edward Bowman Sr.

Surviving with her husband are four sons, William Edward Bowman Jr. of Moorefield, W.Va., Wade S. Barbe of Burlington, Jason A. Barbe of Stephens City, and Lance A. Barbe of Frederick, Md.; three brothers, Harry K. Bowman of Manassas, M. John Bowman of Chase City, and Brian D. Bowman of Roanoke; two sisters, Winifred E. Stickley of Winchester and Janet B. Biser of Burlington; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, with Pastor Glen R. Hamrick officiating. Interment will be in Elijah High Cemetery, Purgitsville.

Mary Etta Fake
Mary Etta Fake, 82, of 60 Cottagewood Drive, Safety Harbor, Fla., formerly of Strasburg, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor.

Mrs. Fake was born May 31, 1918, in Mathias, W.Va., the daughter of George P. and Ettie Snider Emswiler. She was the former president of Quick Music Co. and attended North Bay Community Church.

She was an avid ballroom dancer.

She was married to Harry L. Fake Sr.

Surviving are a son, Harry L. Fake Jr. of Strasburg; three daughters, Anna Marie Robinson of Concord, N.C., Margaret Ann Fake of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Winchester, and Edith Louise Wetzel of Palm Harbor, Fla.; four brothers, Clyde Emswiler of Lynchburg, Ernest Emswiler of Charleston, W.Va., Byron Emswiler of Harrisonburg, and Leonard Emswiler of Winchester; five sisters, Lena Noble of Woodbridge, Edith Tusing of Mathias, W.Va., Jeanette Combs of Locust Groves, Leota Elder of Stephens City, and Dorothy “Peggy” Mathias of Harrisonburg; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Strasburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Brenda Biler officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Joseph L. Holbrook
Joseph Leon Washington Holbrook, 72, of Berryville, died Friday, July 7, 2000, in Berryville.

Mr. Holbrook was born June 19, 1928, in Tazwell, the son of William G. and Bertie Victoria Simpson Holbrook.

He was a dairy farmer.

He served in the Army from 1946 to 1948.

Surviving are two children, Christina Gail and Michael John, both of Washington; a sister, Verda York of Bluemont; a brother, Garland Cecil Malcom Holbrook of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a niece, Judy Moreland Coleman, with whom he lived.

A funeral was Sunday at Loudoun Funeral Home, Leesburg, with the Rev. Jim Greene officiating. Burial was private.

Jerome H. Garver
Jerome H. Garver, 89, of 155 Summerville Road, Boyce, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Garver was born July 11, 1911, in Clarke County, the son of Jacob Samuel and Sarah Birmingham Garver. He was a self-employed painting contractor.

He was a member of Emmanuel Chapel Episcopal Church and Clarke County Ruritan Club.

He married Wilhelmenia Sipe on July 5, 1939, in Boyce. Mrs. Garver died July 10, 1996.

Surviving are a son, Jerome H. Garver Jr. of Boyce; a daughter, Bonnie Garver Beerbower of Atlanta; four grandsons; and a great-grandson.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Meade Memorial Cemetery, White Post, with the Rev. Peter Gustin officiating.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Buckner, Bill Buckner, Charles Ramsburg, Wallace Clark, Bobby M. Grimm, Bill Overbey, Carl Pope, Lawrence Russell, Thomas Ash, Bill Bowerman, and Marvin Painter.

Alma Gertrude Lee, 88, of Augusta, W.Va., died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, W.Va.

Mrs. Lee was born Dec. 4, 1911, in Ruckman, W.Va., the daughter of Isaac Hunter Benjamin Timbrook and Cordelia May Snyder Timbrook.

She worked at National Fruit Product Co. and was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, Augusta.

She was married to Clyde Lee.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Rick Lee of Dayton and Tim Lee of Warrenton; two sisters, Virginia Oates of Winchester and Hallie Liller of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a brother, Allen Timbrook of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, with Minister Jerry Timbrook and the Rev. James Tyree officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Augusta.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Claude R. Silman
Claude Richard “Dickie” Silman, 64, of Stanardsville, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Evergreen Nursing Center.

Mr. Silman was born Feb. 13, 1936, in Berryville, the son of Claude S. Silman and Mabel Johnson Ray.

Surviving with his mother, of Stanardsville, are two daughters, Robin S. Simpkins of Flemingsburg, Ky., and Donna S. Silman of Charleston, Ky.; and a son, Richard P. Silman of Keene.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Friends may call anytime Friday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston.

Anna L. Flynn
Anna Lou Shepherd Fletcher Flynn, 82, of 529 Eckard Circle, Winchester, died Monday, July 10, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Flynn was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Bluemont, the daughter of John and Miriam Anderson Shepherd. She was kitchen supervisor for the Clarke County Ruritans for 35 years and retired in 1991. She attended Boyce United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Boyce Agricultural High School.

She was a lifetime member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

She was married to Ronald Flynn, who died in 1973. Her first husband was Walter Richard Fletcher Sr.

Surviving are three daughters, Gordanna F. Thompson of Frederick County, Linda Lou F. Carter of Winchester, and Dianna “Susan” F. Fahnestock of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; two sons, Walter R. “Dickie” Fletcher Jr. of Clearbrook and Robert C. “Bobby” Fletcher of Stephens City; three sisters, Zeta Shepherd Garber of Winchester, Inez Shepherd Perry of Winchester and Hallee Shepherd Konny of Columbia, Md.; three brothers, John A. Shepherd of Winchester, A. Russell Shepherd of Honolulu, and Lynn R. Shepherd of Front Royal; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A son, Conway Lennox Fletcher, is deceased.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Locke officiating.
