Joanne Miller
Joanne Miller, 54, of 646 E. Hillcrest St., Altamone Springs, Fla., formerly of Cross Junction, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Miller was born in Summit, N.J. She moved to Florida in 1989.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was married to Richard Miller.

Surviving with her husband, are her father, Joseph Skarbek of Roanoke; a brother, James Peter Skarbek of Birmingham, Ala.; a step-daughter, Heather Miller Everly of Winchester; and a step-granddaughter.

Woodlawn Carey Hand Funeral Home, Longwood, Fla., is handling arrangements.

Daniel A. Poling
Daniel Andrew Poling, 37, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Slanesville, W.Va., died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Poling was born March 1, 1963, in Slanesville.

He was married to Marta Snyder.

Surviving with his wife, are his mother, Mary Poling of Slanesville; his father, David Poling of Baker, W.Va.; two brothers, Keith Poling of Slanesville and Don Allen Poling of Baker; a sister, Debra Cox of Slanesville; and his grandmother, Violet Poling of Baker.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Winchester.

Arrangements are being handled by the Baldwin Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va.

Garnett R. Bentz
Garnett Randolph “Bucky” Bentz, 59, of Ranson W.Va., died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Bentz was born July 18, 1940 in Jefferson County, W.Va., the son of Garnett R. and Louise Virginia Shull Bentz.

Mr. Bentz was retired from the Charles Town racetrack and Bashes Fruit Company, Ranson, W.Va. He was a member of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa B. Medina of Ranson, W.Va.; two sisters, Joan Slusher of Charles Town, W.Va., and Shirley Stickles of St. Augustine, Fla.; a brother, William Bentz, of Scottsville; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va., with Pastor Richard E. Neal officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ranson Elementary School, attn. Debra Corbett, 600 North Preston St., Ranson, W.Va., 25438.

William A. Presley
William Alan Presley, 35, of 14948 Berlin Turnpike, Purcellville, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in the Loudoun Hospital Center.

He was born Feb. 1, 1965, the son of Billy R. and Betty O. Presley of Purcellville.

Surviving in addition are two brothers, Don Presley of Purcellville and Scott Presley of Potomac Farms; and his grandmother, Edna Spitler of Winchester.

He worked as a carpenter.

A funeral at the Colonial Funeral Home will be 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Steven G.S. Costello officiating. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Pallbearers will be Brian Jansen, Tim Jansen, Donnie Presley, Eddie Scroggins, Guy Tomberlin, and Mark Tomberlin.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home.

Destiny F. Williams
Destiny Fontane Williams, age 9 months, of Winchester died Sunday, May 21, 2000, in West Virginia.

She was born Sept. 4, 1999, the infant daughter of Huey and Nettie Collier Williams, of Winchester.

Surviving with her parents are three brothers, Dallas Williams, Albert Smith, and Heath Smith, at home; a sister Nettie Williams at home; and her grandparents, Lottie Stanley and Pam Williams of Martinsburg, W.Va.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Omp Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rest Church Cemetery, Frederick County.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Omps Funeral Home.

Michele Ashby-Newcome
A memorial service for Michele Joy Ashby-Newcome of Keyser, W.Va., will be conducted at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home P.A., 8 E. Main St., Lonaconing, Md., at 3 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Barbara Starling.

Ashby-Newcome formerly lived in Stephens City.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Mabel B. Ray
Mabel Bell Goff Ray, 91, of 10004 Rawley Pike, Hinton, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the home of her daughter after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 28, 1908, in Marion County, W. Va., a daughter of James Wallace and Ellen Estep Goff. She was raised by Bennie and Zernie Bennett.

Mrs. Ray worked at the Angus Restaurant in Harrisonburg.

She was married three times. Her third husband was Bridge Ray, whom she married in 1983. Mr. Ray died in 1984.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Kile of Hinton; two sons, Leroy Lambert of McConnellsburg, Pa., and Rupert Helmick of Winchester; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Chapel with Jessie Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Rawley Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Emmeline L. Buck
Emmeline Louise Buck, infant daughter of Bryan D. Buck and Elizabeth I. Hoke Buck of Albemarle Court, Stephens City, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Surviving with her parents are three sisters, Heather E. Buck, Rebecca I. Buck, and Sarah M. Buck, all of Stephens City; her paternal grandmother, Evelyne L. Buck of Atlanta; and her maternal grandparents, J. Justin Hoke and Patricia C. Hoke of Winchester.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Carroll County, Md., with Bishop H. Justin Hoke officiating.

Memorials may be made to Missionary Fund: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, c/o Bishop H. Justin Hoke, 171 Old Middle Road, Winchester 22602.

Michelle Ashby-Newcome
Michelle Joy Ashby-Newcome, 31, of Jake Staggers Road, Keyser, W.Va., formerly of Stephens City, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Ashby-Newcome was born Aug. 25, 1968, in Grafton, W.Va., the daughter of June Helman Ashby. She was a member of Reese Chapel, New Creek, W.Va., and was a laser surgical technician at Visual Freedoms in Fairfax.

Surviving with her mother, of Keyser, W.Va., is her husband, Mike Newcome, of Stephens City.

At her request, Mrs. Newcome’s body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth V. Christian
Elizabeth Virginia Hausenfluck Christian, 86, of Salem Church Road, Stephens City, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Christian was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Stephens City, the daughter of Simon Henry and Phebe Ebersole Hausenfluck.

She retired in 1984 from the National Fruit Product Co., where she had worked for more than 36 years.

She was a member of Salem Church of the Brethren and Winchester Deaf Brethren Church.

She was married to Joseph Grover Christian.

Surviving are two sons, John D. Christian and Donald L. Christian, both of Stephens City; a daughter, Dorothy C. Fletcher of Stephens City; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Salem Church of the Brethren, Stephens City, with Pastor Esther Schaeffer and Pastor Shelvie Mantz officiating. Burial will be in Union Forge Cemetery, Lantz Mill.

Pallbearers will be Merrill Hausenfluck, Aaron Sager, Richard Loy, Marshall Carper, Jack Heishman, and Robert Hruska.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City.

Owen B. Mitchell
Owen Benjamin Mitchell, 70, of Washington, D.C., died Monday, May 15, 2000, in Washington Hospital Center.

Mr. Mitchell was born May 24, 1929, in Calvert County, Md., the son of George C. and Susie E. Johnson Mitchell.

He was married to Mae Dean.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, the Rev. Cecilio R. Mitchell of New York City, Charles Mitchell of Front Royal, and George Mitchell of Leesburg; and a daughter, Pearlene Mitchell of Charlotte, N.C.

A private service is planned.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21, Hampton 23666-2404.

Virginia I. Anderberg
Virginia Irons “Ginny” Anderberg, 79, of Shenandoah Farms, Front Royal, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Anderberg was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Mt. Ida, Ark., the daughter of George A. and Verda D. Wingfield Irons.

She retired in 1987 from the Smithsonian after seven years. She had worked for War Department and had retired from NASA after 30 years.

She was married to Sven L. Anderberg on Aug. 25, 1950, in Washington, D.C.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, James S. Anderberg of Purcellville; two daughters, Patricia L. Jenkins of Leesburg and Pamela L. Guest of Davidsonville, Md.; a brother, Leo Irons of Hot Springs, Ark.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Julius Berkovics
Julius Berkovics, 78, of Romney, W.Va., died Friday, May 12, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Berkovics was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Budapest, Hungary, the son of Gyula and Margit Kalman Berkovics. He was a tool and dye maker.

He was married to Pocz Manyi Berkovics, who died in 1991.

Surviving are two daughters, Ildy Orban of Vienna and Christine Freda of New Jersey; a son, George Berkovics of New Jersey; and six grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Burton B. Thompson
Burton Beriah Thompson, 83, of 130 Walloston Drive, Winchester, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was born June 4, 1916, in Cheyenne, Wyo., the son of John Charles and Della Mae Thompson. He was a public relations and advertising representative with State of Wyoming government.

He was married to Betty Erin Cook on May 28, 1938, in Cheyenne.

Surviving with his wife, are two daughters, Beth Della Vassallo of Winchester and Mary Catherine Thompson of Colddale, Alberta, Canada; two brothers, William Thompson of Cheyenne and Shelby Thompson of Bethesda, Md.; and three grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Isabella P. Carter
Isabella P. Carter, 74, 377 Shady Creek Road, Clearbrook, died Friday, May 12, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Carter was born June 16, 1925, in Mount Jackson, the daughter of Staller R. and Willie Mae Hopewell Miller.

She was a member of Winchester Church of God.

She married Allen H. Carter on March 7, 1957, in Woodstock.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Arthur D. Pugh of Winchester; a sister, Anna Welsh of Stephens City; three brothers, Staller R. Miller of Winchester, Robert A. Miller of Stephens City, and Douglas L. Miller of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with Pastor Chad Dunford officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, followed by a reception at the home of her son, Robert Miller.

Pallbearers will be John Pugh, Phillip Pugh, Bennie Welsh Sr., John Good, Steve Patrick, and Robert Good.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Jones Funeral Home.

Walter W. Hupp
Walter Wayne Huff, 90, of 233 Miller Drive, Strasburg, formerly of Illinois, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Hupp was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Blue Mound, Ill., the son of Walter Henry and Anna May Cormaney Hupp. He was retired from the Internal Revenue Service.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the First Methodist Church of Springfield, Ill.

He was married to Joyce Dayle Hartwig.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Elisabeth Hupp Schillinger of Strasburg and Washington, D.C.; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be in Bethel Cemetery, Blue Mound, Ill., at a later date.

Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, is handling arrangements.

Sylvester O. Jackson
Sylvester Owen “Speedy” Jackson, 53, of Front Royal, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Jackson was born July 16, 1946, in Front Royal, the son of Mack Owen and Roberta Roberts Jackson. He was an auto detailer for Jerry’s Ford in Fairfax.

He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church of Front Royal.

Surviving with his mother, of Front Royal, are two daughters, LaVonne Telsee of Tacoma, Wash., and Angel Jackson of Falls Church; a stepdaughter, Lauren Smith of Annapolis, Md.; a stepson, Michael Sean Smith of Ringgold, Ga.; a brother, Aaron Jackson; four sisters, Bernice Bowden, Doretha Downing, Raquel Jackson and Janet Poles, all of Front Royal; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Charles E. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Preston Barbour, Robert Brooks, Otis Frye, Thornton Jackson, Melvin Jackson, and Frederick Richburg.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Christopher R. Kidwell
Christopher Robert “Chris” KidweIl, 23, of 108 Dunbar Lane, Winchester, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center of lymphoma.

Mr. Kidwell was born July 28, 1976, in Winchester, the son of Clarence Robert and Barbara Crites Kidwell. He was a chef at the 1763 Inn.

He was a graduate of James Wood High School where he was named to Who’s Who Among High School Students in 1993. He earned his Associates degree of Culinary Arts and a BS degree in Food Service/Entrepreneurship from Johnson and Wales University in Norfolk.

He was a member of Round Hill United Methodist Church and the Whitehall 4-H Club.

He was engaged to Renee Noel Sonsini.

Surviving with his parents, and his fiancee, are a sister, Kristin Ashley Kidwell at home; and a brother, Jeremy Matthew Kidwell at home.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Gainesboro Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Rhodes, Heather O’Hara, Elisabeth Cady, Roger Kerns Jr., Jeffery Everett, Chris Boyce, Jason Kerzner, Fred Peters, Tim Kelsey, Joseph Kerns, Jonathan Boyd, and Bruce Pugh.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William C. King Sr.
William Charles King Sr., 69, of 40 Kingsbury Lane, Berryville, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. King was born Aug. 24, 1930, in New York City, the son of William Francis King and Kathryn Ultzen King. He was vice president and director of Motorola for 38 years.

He was an Air Force lieutenant in France from 1953 to 1955.

He was a member of Crums United Methodist Church, the Clarke County Ruritan Club, where he was a past president, and Chantilly National Golf and Country Club.

He married Jean Stitz on July 17, 1965, in Larchmont, N.Y.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, William C. King Jr. and Christopher S. King, both of Leesburg, and Joseph D. King of Fairfax; a brother, Charles F. King of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crums United Methodist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. Harvey Warnick officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors accorded by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be William C. King Jr., Joseph D. King, Christopher S. King, Tom Travers, John Dragelin, and Al Schiavoni.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.
