David E. Benner
David Eugene Benner, 45, of Brucetown Road, Clearbrook, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Benner was born July 2, 1954, in Winchester, the son of Ralph J. and Eloise Mason Benner. He was a truck driver and painter for contractor Lester Carroll.

He had been married to Kathy Brannon.

Surviving with his mother, Eloise Benner Foltz of Vero Beach, Fla., are his stepmother, Geraldine Benner of Clearbrook, a daughter, Tara Lynn Benner of Front Royal; two sisters, Sandra K. Benner and Cynthia Lynn Benner, both of Clearbrook; two brothers, Ralph J. Benner Jr. of Stafford and Roger A. Benner Sr. of Stephenson; and a grandchild.

A daughter, Theresa Benner, is deceased.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Paynes Chapel Cemetery, Frederick County.

Pallbearers will be Ralph J. Benner III, Christopher A. Benner, Joseph Barnes, Ryan L. Minnick, Roger L. Minnick, and Robert L. Wilson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home.

Catherine S. Burns
Catherine “Kitty” Steeves Burns, 80, of Quincy Village, Pa., formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Burns was born Sept. 25, 1919, in New York City, the daughter of Clarence Seymour and Josephine Anna Lazarowicz Steeves.

She retired in 1981 as recorder with Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Md., and had been secretary/treasurer of John Nevins Andrews Elementary School in Takoma Park. She had been a legal secretary with the Bureau on National Affairs and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, both in Washington, D.C.

She was a 1936 graduate of Plainfield Academy and a 1940 graduate of Columbia Junior College. She was a member of Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was an accomplished seamstress, braider, and quilter.

She was married to G. Richard Burns for 57 years.

Surviving with her husbandare two daughters, Margaret Anne Burns of Loma Linda, Calif., and Bonnie Burns Wilbur of Burtonsville, Md.; and three sisters, Grace Grant of Berkeley Springs, and Margaret Roy and Alyce Ryals Wilburn, both of Hendersonville, N.C.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the Rev. Frank Bondurant officiating. Burial will be private in Duckwall Church Cemetery, Morgan County, W.Va.

Capt. Jared E. Clarke III
Capt. Jared Ellison “Jerry” Clarke III, 79, of 417 Minebank Road, Middletown, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Capt. Clark was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Houston, the son of Jared E. Clarke Jr., and Lucy Skains Clarke.

Clarke was in the Navy with the Submarine Service for 30 years. He was a 1941 graduate of the Naval Academy, with a bachelors degree in science, and earned a master’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University.

Clarke served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Legion of Merit. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Mississippi and the USS Minneapolis. His submarine duty included the USS Porpoise, the USS Plunger, and the USS Guardfish.

His post-war duties included tours on the USS Pomodon and the USS Tigrone. He was commanding officer of the USS Argonaut, commander of Submarine Division 71, Squadron 6, commanding officer of the USS Tolovana, and on the staff of the Pacific Fleet and Atlantic Fleet Submarine Forces. His last tour of duty was with the National Security Agency.

After retirement, he was commandant of cadets at St. Johns Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., and headed the Naval Science Department at Harbor Creek High School in Harbor Creek, Pa.

He was a member of the Episcopalian faith.

He married Beverly Briggs on Feb. 16, 1947, at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Susan C. Ziobro of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Jared E. Clarke IV of Middletown; a sister, Mary Catherine Weatherford of Houston; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in the Naval Academy Chapel, Annapolis. Burial will be in the Naval Academy Columbarium.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 202 N. Washington St., Winchester 22601.

Clara A. Mason
Clara Ann Mason, 63, of 908 Bloomery Pike, Whitacre, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Mason was born July 22, 1936, in Bloomery, W.Va., the daughter of Harry W. and Goldie Puffinberger Crouse.

She married John D. Mason on Jan. 23, 1960, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband are five sons, John J. Crouse of Tri Lake, W.Va., David D. Mason and Wayne G. Mason, both of Winchester, Jeffrey A. Mason of Stephenson, and Frank L. Mason of Cross Junction; five brothers, Richard Crouse of Whitacre, Ramsey Crouse of Cross Junction, Ernest Crouse of Romney, W.Va., Lloyd Crouse of Petersburg, and David Crouse of Winchester; four sisters, Mildred L. Miller and Suzanne Crouse, both of Whitacre, Edna Crouse of Cross Junction, and Emma S. Nelson of Winchester; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Beacon Baptist Church, Cross Junction, with the Rev. Gary Felton and the Rev. Cletus Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Cross Junction.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Crouse, Harry Crouse, Shawn Crouse, Jody Crouse, Brian Mason, and Winfred Elliott.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Greg A. Pilkington
Greg A. Pilkington, 40, of Winchester, died Jan. 30, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Pilkington was born in Swain County, N.C., the son of Clarence and Peggy Lambert Pilkington. He had lived in Winchester for 34 years. He worked for Berryville Graphics and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winchester.

Surviving with his parents, of Bryson City, N.C., are a daughter, Diane M. Pilkington of Morgantown, W.Va.; his paternal grandparents, Roy and Bonnie Pilkington of Bryson City; and his maternal grandmother, Laura J. Lambert of Cherokee, N.C.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Deep Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Earl Holden and the Rev. Ray Lambert officiating. Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret V. Morrison
Margaret Virginia Barr Morrison, 56, of Linden, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Morrison was born July 12, 1943, in Linden, the daughter of Valley Virginia Barbee Barr and Paul Lester Barr. She was a charter member of Corner Stone Baptist Church and was a volunteer with the Literacy Council. She enjoyed gardening and quilting.

She was married to Lee Smith Morrison for 35 years.

Surviving with her husband is a son, P. Jeffrey Morrison of Norfolk; a daughter, Susan “Becky” Wilks of Geneva, Ohio; two brothers, William “Bill” Barr of Front Royal and Frankie Barr of Linden; a sister, Annie “Susie” Laing of Front Royal; and a grandchild.

A funeral will be at noon Monday at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home Chapel, Front Royal, with the Rev. Raymond Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be John Barr, Michael Morrison, R.J. Morrison, Mark Willhite, Gary Olsen, and Roger Stevens.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Esther D. Marshall
Esther Dearing Marshall, 64, of Triangle, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Salem.

Mrs. Marshall was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Winchester, the daughter of Eugene F. and Lillian Morris.

She was married to William Marshall.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Kelley Bailey of Troutville; a brother, Eugene F. Dearing Jr. of Winchester; a sister, Betty Jo Melton of Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico.

Betty M. Borden
Betty Maphis Borden, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in Skyline Terrace Nursing Home, Woodstock.

Mrs. Borden was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Strasburg, the daughter of Fred and Anna Maphis. She was a graduate of Strasburg High School and attended Lynchburg College.

She was a lifelong member of Strasburg Christian Church.

She was married to Raymond E. Borden, who died in 1950.

Surviving are three children, Noel Borden of Strasburg, Andrew Borden of Savannah, Ga., and Carol Borden Morency of The Plains; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Strasburg Christian Church, Strasburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Bette J. Knight
Bette Jane Knight, 76, of Bridgewater Retirement Community, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Knight was born Dec. 5. 1923, in Beloit, Wis., the daughter of William Paul and Bernice Buss Stone. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was married to Sgt. Major Joseph S. Knight, who died Jan. 2, 1991.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph S. Knight Jr. of Stephens City and Thomas Alan Knight of Harrisonburg; and a grandson.

A memorial service was Wednesday at Greenmount Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Chip Leatherman officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Dorothy E. Pollard
Dorothy E. Pollard, 61, of 434 N. Kent St., Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in Northern Virginia Community Hospital, Arlington.

Mrs. Pollard was born June 4, 1938, in Clarke County, the daughter of Russell Raymond Wood and Helen Townley. She was a nurse at Winchester Medical Center and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Boyce.

She was married to Lewis Lee Pollard.

Surviving with her husband, of Clarke County, are a son, Carl “Rudy” Pollard of Landover, Md.; four daughters, Sherry Green, Charlet Pollard, Tina Pollard, and Deloris Shabazz, all of Alexandria; two brothers, John Wood and Raymond Wood, both of Winchester; two sisters, Mary Rush and Lucille Scott, both of Winchester; and 11 grandchildren.

A son, Lewis Leroy Pollard, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 4 p.m. today at Cartwright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Percy Pollard officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 33 S. Greenway Ave., Boyce 22620.
