Hezikiah C. Benner
Hezikiah Crum Benner, 65, of Kearneysville, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Mr. Benner was born March 7, 1935, in Kearneysville, the son of Harry Hunter and Isabell Marshall Benner. He had operated the Hozben Dairy Farm in Kearneysville for many years and received many awards for his accomplishments in the dairy industry. He had also delivered straw for 21 years.

He was a member and elder of Kearnesyville Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Shepherdstown High School.

He was married to Nancy C. Price for 40 years.

Surviving with his wife is a son, H.C. Benner II at home.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kearneysville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Cushwa officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

Frances L. Bragg
Frances Lucille Swimley Bragg, 89, of Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Bragg was born June 4, 1911, in Brucetown, the daughter of Samuel Jefferson Swimley II and Carey Olin Tranquary Swimley.

She was a member of Brucetown United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

She was married Joseph William Bragg Sept. 17, 1928, in Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Middletown. Mr. Bragg died in 1993.

Surviving are three daughters, Lucy Wilt Teets and Kathryn Lucille Burleson of Clearbrook and Mary Louise Baker of Rochester, Minn.; a son, Julian Yorke Bragg of Winchester; two sisters, Mary Louise Swimley Bragg of Brucetown and Dorothy Huyett Swimley Shearer of Kennett Square, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Jones Funeral Home/Winchester with the Rev. Mary Lock officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell William Bragg, Randall Ross Bragg, George Grover Teets III, John Edward Burleson, Robert Yorke Bragg, Richard Swimley Bragg, James Scott Burleson, David Alan Burleson, and Bruce Allen Baker.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Hattie G. Burks
Hattie Grace Burks, 62, of Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Lewis F. Carvell
Lewis Franklin “Frank” Carvell, 108 Rice St., Berryville, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, are incomplete.

Leslie Cook
Leslie Cook, 48, of Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Arrangements with Cartwright Funeral Home are incomplete.

Helen V. Gochenour
Helen Virginia Gochenour, 82, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Fahrney Keedy Nursing Home, Boonsboro, Md.

Mrs. Gochenour was born June 1, 1918, in Frederick County, the daughter of Charles Martin and Willie Love Chrismore Martin. She was a volunteer at City Hospital and a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Moler Avenue Church of the Brethren.

She was married to Donald L. Gochenour.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia A. Cookus and Nancy J. Manuel, both of Martinsburg; two brothers, Charles Martin of Vanville, W.Va., and Garland Martin of Tablers Station, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Donald L. Gochenour Jr., is deceased.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moler Avenue Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Eddie Edmonds officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Mark I. Good
Mark Irvin “Little Nut” Good, 36, of 103 E. Pall Mall St. died Saturday Jan. 27, 2001, in Winchester.

Mr. Good was born Nov. 20, 1964, in Indiana, Pa., the son of Perry Alfred and Mary Ellen Henry Good.

He was an HVAC technician for MS Air and a member of the Winchester/Frederick County Conservation Club.

He married Lisa Fyock April 9, 1983 in Nanty-Glo, Pa.

Survivors including his wife and mother are four brothers, Dwayne Good, Edward Good, and Norman Good of Vintondale, Pa., and Terry Good of Northern Cambria, Pa.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Long-Contries Funeral Home in Northern Cambria with the Rev. Reginald Bell officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family will also receive friends at Long-Contries Funeral Home in Northern Cambria from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Lucille D. Laing
Lucille Dodson Laing, 81, of Front Royal, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Front Royal.

Mrs. Laing was born Sept. 14, 1919, in Rappahannock County, the daughter of John Walker and Lizzie Ethel Atkins Dodson.

She was a seamstress with Peebles in Front Royal and a member of Zion Baptist Church in Nineveh.

She was married to Robert E. Laing for 62 years.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Terry L. Laing of Front Royal; four daughters, Linda L. Davis of Cary, N.C., and Dianne L. Kent, Carol P. Laing, and June L. Smeltzer, all of Front Royal; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Greg Amos officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Steve Johnston, Kelly Laing, Terry Laing Jr., Robert Johnston, Wade Fox, and Michael Caudill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

John G. McIlwee
John Gilbert McIlwee, 78, of Front Royal, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mr. McIlwee was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Washington, D.C., the son of Mamie Himelright and Branson Gilbert McIlwee. He was a florist and an avid gardener. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He received the Army Occupation Medal, (Germany), the Good Conduct Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Award, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was a member of Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, Mary Washington Chapter 50 of the OES, Arlington, the Moose Lodge 0829, Front Royal, the American Legion Cissel Saxon Post 41, and the National Stansbury Dawson Lodge. He was a member of South Arlington Lions Club, Kena Temple, and Scottish Right of Alexandria.

He was married to Virginia Leatherwood for 51 years.

Surviving with his wife, are two daughers, Virginia Ruth Kash of Atlanta and Betty M. Showers of Front Royal; a sister, Mae McIlwee Davis of Sun City, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lynn Beckbolt and the Rev. Dale Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cpl. John M. Hott, Stephen W. Showers, Gene R. Kash, James McIlwee Jr., John S. Leatherwood, Von Himelright, Wayne Himelright, and Jack Colvin.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Mary E. Rutz
Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Rutz, 79, of 578 Millner Road, Strasburg, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Tandem Health Care, Woodstock.

Mrs. Rutz was born April 16, 1921, in Lebanon Church, the daughter of Jacob E. and Emma F. Feltner Jenkins. She was a member of Strasburg Presbyterian Church and Moose Lodge 1319.

She was married to John William Rutz.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty E. Gillis of New Haven, Mich., and Sandra K. Shrum of Woodstock; two sons, Allen Rutz of Waverly, Tenn., and Richard Rutz of Strasburg; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Strasburg Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Howard and Pastor Richard Craver officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Rutz, Charles Rutz, Greg Rutz, Gary Rutz, Edward Rutz, and Vincent Sine.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Bonnie D. Simon
Bonnie Damsel Simon, 88, of 643 Hollingsworth Dr., Winchester, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Simon was born March 30, 1912, in Covington, the daughter of C.M. and Cora E. Humphries Tucker.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Star Tannery and a homemaker.

She was married to William Simon, who died in 1976. Her first husband, Thomas A. Bobbington, died in 1964.

Surviving are three sisters, Ruby Cleveland of Clearbrook, Martha Gochenour of Woodstock, and Elizabeth T. Sherman of Winchester; a brother, Emmitte Tucker of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Ewart H. Wyle officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Millwood Station Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company 21 Inc., 600 Millwood Ave., Winchester 22601 or to First Christian Church, 75 Merrimann’s Lane, Winchester.

Stanley W. Sneathen
Stanley W. Sneathen, 34, of Stony Hill Road, Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Sneathen was born May 21, 1966, in Winchester, the son of Larry E. and Peggy Michael Sneathen.

He was a production leader at Federal Mogul, formerly Abex. He was a member of UAW Local 149 and Eagles Aerie 824.

He married Kimberly Miller July 16, 1999, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife are his father of Ridgeway, W.Va.; his mother, Peggy Shifflett of Winchester; two sons, Chad W. Sneathen and Blake E. Sneathen, both at home; a stepdaughter, Brandy N. Davis of Buchannon; three brothers, Larry E. Sneathen Jr. of Slanesville, W.Va., Gregory A. Sneathen of Winchester, and Brian F. Shifflett of Boyce; his maternal grandmother, Virginia Michael of Augusta, W.Va.; and a grandson.

A private service is planned for a later date.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home/Winchester.

Theon M. Strother
Theon Mandrill Strother, 20, of Winchester, formerly of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, as a result of a car accident.

Mr. Strother was born Feb. 16, 1980, in Harrisonburg, the son of Carla Strother Burrill and Maurice McCall.

He worked at Kidwell Fencing Co. in Winchester. He attended Harrisonburg City schools and Turner Ashby High School. He was a member of the Islam faith.

Surviving with his mother of Charlottesville and his father of Harrisonburg are a daughter, Akacia Williams of Harrisonburg; his foster parents, Abdulla Mannan and Khadijah Islam, both of Harrisonburg; a brother, Darrest Taylor of Harrisonburg; five sisters, Candice Strother of Charlottesville, Karita Burrill and Jasmine Burrill, both of Harrisonburg, Deanna McCall of Roanoke, and Shamara McCall of Johnson City, Tenn.; his grandmother, Amanda McCall of Harrisonburg; and his grandfather, Charles Strother Jr. of Harrisonburg.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, with Pastor Basil Marin officiating. Burial will be in Newtown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and after the burial at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg.
