Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Hopkins
Glen Edwards Hopkins, 59, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at his home in Marion.
He was born in Smyth County to the late Paul V. and Susie Hopkins and was a dedicated member of the Lowman Valley Church. He loved to preach about Jesus and the gospel.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty; one son and daughter-in law, Michael and Amy Hopkins of Marion; one daughter, Susie Hopkins of Marion; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Shelby Hopkins of Chilhowie, and Nathan and Jane Hopkins of Marion; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jean Hopkins of Marion, and Faye and Wayne Wright of Greenville, Tenn.; several special nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, 2003 from Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Michael Hopkins, Larry Hopkins, and Steve Hutton officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Lowman Valley Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lowman Valley Church Building fund.
Bradley’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas
Kermit M. Thomas, 69, of Glade Spring, died Saturday, July 12, 2003 at his residence.
He was a life-long resident of Washington County, and was the son of the late James Mack and Lola Jane Thomas, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Thomas.
He was a retired dairy farmer and was a member of the Glade Hills Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Margie E. Thomas; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Elsie Thomas of Glade Spring; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ruthie and Tim Abrams, Renie and Tim Widner all of Meadowview, Rachel and Ronnie Nichols, Mary and John Hicks, all of Glade Spring; two sisters, Ester Thomas and Lois Barlow, both of Glade Spring; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, one grandson-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 15, 2003 in the Glade Hills Church of God with the Rev. James L. DeBord and Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
Garrett Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

Tolbert
Rhoda Jane Peake Tolbert, 73, died Monday, July 14, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Edward and Phobie Howell Peake and was a retired employee of Maple Grove Retirement Home.
Survivors include her husband, Dewey M. Tolbert; one son, Everette Clifton Worley, Jr. of York, S.C.; one step-son, Dewey Eugene Tolbert of Chilhowie; one step-daughter, Cynthia Tolbert of Glade Spring; two sisters, Betty Short of Saltville and Opal Rhudy of Chilhowie; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 17, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley G. Eller officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday in the Williams Funeral Home.
Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wassum
Helen Peacock Grinstead Wassum, 90, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Arthur McDonald Grinstead and Thomas F. Wassum; and a son Kenneth C. Grinstead.
She was a nurse in Smyth County for many years, having worked at Lee Memorial, Marion General, Smyth County Community Hospital, and Southwestern State Hospital, where she retired. She was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and the senior bowling league.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty C. Vaught of Wytheville; one son and two daughters-in-law, Mack and Dottie Grinstead and Betty F. Grinstead, all of Marion; three granddaughters; one grandson; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mark Totten and the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, July 14, 2003 at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Donations can be made to South Fork Baptist Church, c/o Fran Hayes, 3137 South Fork Road, Sugar Grove, Va. 24375.
Seaver-Brown was in charge of arrangements.

Blevins
Luther Kenneth Blevins of Chilhowie died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
He was born in Carter County, Tenn., to the late William Elkanah Blevins and Tancy Barker Blevins Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Betty Ruth Haga Blevins, and his stepfather R.N. “Rob” Martin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Aircorps, having served in World War II as a tail gunner on B24’s. He was the recipient of several medals of valor and was retired from Sprint Telephone Company.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Monica Blevins of Chilhowie and Ken and Gail Blevins of Wilkesboro, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Scott Johnson of Gillett, Penn.; grandchildren, William Luther, Gavin Nathaniel and Megan Alyce Blevins, and Anna Lee and Melanie Sue Johnson; one brother, Elder Eugene Blevins of Chilhowie; one sister, Mabel Martin of Chilhowie; one half-sister, Hallie Martin of Chilhowie; three step-sisters, Aileen Russell of Marion, Fern Haga of Galva, Ill., and Elsie Anderson of Altona, Ill.; and also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday June 24, 2003, at 8 p.m. from the Bradley’s Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Larry Blevins officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. The family received friends Tuesday at the funeral home.

Connett
Robert Paul Connett, 85, of Abingdon died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at his home.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, June 29, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. in the Abingdon United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends following the service.
Memorial gifts may be made to the choir of the Abingdon United Methodist Church or to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 325 Cummings Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.
Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon is in charge of the arrangements.

Gillespie
Ricky Allen “Crock” Gillespie, 49, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his home in Marion.
He was a native of Saltville.
Survivors include one sister, Rebecca Kestner of Fairfax; three brothers, William “Bud” Gillespie of Saltville, Robert “Bob” Gillespie of Martinsville and Thomas George “T.G.” Gillespie of Saltville; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
D. R. Henderson Funeral Home of Saltville is in charge of the arrangements.

Hull
Elizabeth Clyde Hull of Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, died Friday, June 20, 2003.
Born Oct. 31, 1912, she was the daughter of Wythe Marvin Hull Sr. and Cassie Clyde Carlock of Marion. She attended Marion College and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She taught school for two years in Bluefield, Va. Subsequently, she worked from 1942 until 1980 on the staff of the American Association of University Women in Washington, D.C. She was listed in Who’s Who of American Women, and was an officer in the Zonta Club. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square in Washington and volunteered in their office following retirement. In 1993, she and her sister moved from Arlington to the Glenaire Retirement Community.
She is survived by her sister, Margaret Douglas Hull of Glenaire Retirement Community; three nieces, Ellen Hull Keever of Chapel Hill, Martha Hull Copenhaver of Marion and Betty Hull Roberts of Longview, Texas; three nephews, Wythe Hull of Glade Springs, Richard Hull of Jacksonville, Fla., and David Hull of Houston, Texas.
A graveside ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion, with the Rev. Robert Keever officiating.
The Cremation Society of the Carolinas in Raleigh, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

Johnson
J. Ralph Johnson, 73, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Survivors include his wife, Blana Shelton Johnson of Chilhowie; three daughters and one son-in-law, Becky Johnson and Patty Johnson, both of Chilhowie and Susie and Neil Castrodale of Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sara Johnson and John and Paula Johnson, all of Chilhowie; six grandchildren, Brett Castrodale, Krista Castrodale, Ashley Johnson, Jessie Johnson, Adam Johnson, and Jared Johnson; one sister-in-law, Peggy Johnson of Chilhowie; one niece, Tamara Rowland; and one nephew, Chris Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, 2003 at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Mark Blevins officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m in Middle Fork Cemetery in Seven Mile Ford. The family received friends Monday evening at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Prater
Mary Elmira Routh Prater, 80, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
She was the daughter of the late Willie and Gussie Routh. She was a member of the McCready United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamuel E. Prater; and two brothers, Buddy and R.D. Routh.
She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Jean Prater, Nelson Prater, all of Saltville; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Tommy Surber of Saltville; one brother, Harry Routh of Johnson City, Tenn.; five sisters, Dorothy Guinn of Jonesboro, Tenn., Ercelle Collins of St. Paul, Billie Woliver of Knoxville, Tenn., Lyda Milhorne of Gray, Tenn., and Norma Jean Salyers of Castlewood; four grandchildren, Katherine S. Doane, Tonya S. Cassell, Michelle Prater and Scott Prater; one step-grandchild; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. John Roe and the Rev. Kyle French officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 25, 2003, from 7-9 p.m., at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the McCready United Methodist Church.

Stanberry
Dorothy F. Stanberry, 72, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
She was the daughter of the late Henry and Virginia Stanberry. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James H. Stanberry, and a sister, Shirley Jarvis.
She is survived by one sister, Peggy Atwell of Rural Retreat; one brother, Curtis Stanberry; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at the.
Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating. Burial followed in the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville. The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home.
The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Testerman
Helen Mathena Testerman, 73, of Vinton, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, with her granddaughter by her side.
She was the widow of Robert Franklin Testerman, to whom she was married for 55 years. She was also preceded in death by sons, Dennis and Barry Testerman.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Lynne Testerman of Roanoke, Jeff and Elizabeth Testerman of Vinton, Larry Testerman of Vinton, Robert and Nancy Testerman of Woodbridge; one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Larry Thigpen of Macon, Ga.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bobby, Donnie and Kenny Mathena.
Funeral services will be at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2003, with Pastor Andy Rice officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton.
The family received friends Tuesday at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.
Oakey’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
