Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Evans
Robert Montgomery Evans Sr., age 81, of Saltville, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Robert Evans Jr., Macon, Ga.; four daughters, Margaret Hayden Shea, Chilhowie, Sheila Evans Fullen, Saltville, Teresa Greer, Glade Spring, and Betty E. Call, Marion; two brothers, Will Evans and Thomas Evans Jr., both of Saltville; three sisters, Maxine Smith, Chilhowie, Lois Kestner, Saltville, and Alice Ford, Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Kyle French officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery.

Howell
Francis K. "Dix" Howell III, age 78, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000 at his home in Colonial Heights.
Mr. Howell was born on Nov. 12, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Penn., the son of the late Frank and Myra Howell. He was a native of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Banks Howell; a brother, Richard Howell; a son, Robert Francis Howell; and a stepson, Roger Gene Roe.
Mr. Howell was a First Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, a veteran of World War II, and held a private pilot’s license. He was a 1944 honor graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Certified Professional Engineer and past president and owner of the Frank Howell Company.
Mr. Howell was an avid swimmer, tennis player, and an active member of the Willow Oaks Country Club. He was also a member of the Hopewell Moose Lodge and served as president of the Dunlop Farms Condominium Association.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Rouse Howell of Colonial Heights, formerly of Chilhowie; one daughter, Joan Howell of California; two sons, Steven B. Howell and wife Linda of Mechanicsville, and Dr. Malcolm L. Howell and wife Debra of Richmond; one stepson, Edward M. Roe and wife Nancy of Sutherland; five stepdaughters, Brenda Meade and husband Charles of Chester, Linda Bryant and husband Robert, Sandy Smith, Carolyn Jones and husband Michael, all of Colonial Heights, and Teresa Witte and husband Chris of Hanover; stepdaughter-in-law, Nancy Roe of Colonial Heights; one sister, Anne Allen of Sagamore Beach, Mass.; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Poe and husband Bud, and Ruth McClure and husband Ken, all of Chilhowie.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Marshall O. Bonds officiating. Internment was at Southlawn Memorial Park in Prince George.
J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home in Petersburg was in charge of arrangements.

Maxey
Ronald Lee Maxey, age 41, died at his home in Marion.
He is survived by his father, Frank Lee Maxey; his mother, Ella Mae King; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Shack officiating. The family will receive friends before the service from 1 to 2 at the funeral home.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Trust Fund in care of Trigg Atwell, Treasurer, Rt. 2, Rural Retreat, VA 24368.

Phipps
John A. Phipps Jr., age 63, of Seven Mile Ford, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Phipps was a 1956 graduate of Chilhowie High School, a member of the Chilhowie Baptist Church, and had retired from Brunswick after 36 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Lorretta Adkins Phipps; a daughter and son-in-law, Deidra and Mike Mathena of Seven Mile Ford; one son, Mark Andrew Phipps of Seven Mile Ford; one granddaughter, Kelly Jo Berry of Seven Mile Ford; one grandson, Jamie Lee Phipps of Seven Mile Ford; two very special cousins, Frank and Barbara Freeman of Atkins.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Herrell, the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Phipps Family Cemetery.
Barnett’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rogers
Virginia I. Rogers, age 70, of Damascus, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000 in Grace Healthcare of Abingdon.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late Giles and Margie Sykes. She had lived in Damascus since 1984 and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW and First Baptist Church in Damascus.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas J. Rogers; four daughters, Susan L. Schwartz of Philadelphia, Penn., Sharon L. Rogers of Tokyo, Japan, Shirley A. Franks of Atlanta, Ga., and Christina L. Rogers of Austin, Texas; one sister, Patricia Kendell of Akron, Ohio; three grandchildren, Misty Evan Shine, Brent Thomas Franks and Erin Nicole Franks; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with David Matlock officiating. A private burial was held in Sunset Memorial Park.
Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

St. John
Hettie Ernestine "Bug" St. John, age 71, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. St. John was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a daughter of the late John I. and Bonnie Singleton. She was the widow of Preston D. St. John and was also preceded in death by a son, Danny St. John and a brother, James Singleton.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Mann and Wilma Gobble Willis, both of Abingdon, and Carolyn Walker of Shady Valley, Tenn.; two sisters, Ann Pennington of Abingdon and Joyce Thomas of Greeneville, Tenn.; two brothers, William "Bill" Singleton of Abingdon and Charlie "Tap" Singleton of Catlette; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mark Lundy officiating. Graveside services will be held today, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the graveside service should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 84, Meadowview, VA 24361.

Blackwell
James Arthur Blackwell, age 75, of Wytheville, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Blackwell was born in Rogersville, Tenn., the son of the late Arthur and Florence Thomas Blackwell. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marion and was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Spence Blackwell; a brother, Bobby L. Blackwell; a nephew, Richard D. Gillespie; and a brother-in-law, Jack Gillespie.
He is survived by two sisters and brother-in-law, Carrie and Bob Lineberry of Wytheville, and Helen Gillespie of Chilhowie; five nephews, Jack Gillespie, Michael Gillespie, Roger Gillespie, Arthur Gillespie, and David Preston Gillespie; three nieces, Nona Widner, Kitty Worth and Clare Edith Gillespie.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at Barnett’s Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Ron Hutzel officiating. Interment was in Sulfur Springs Cemetery in Chilhowie. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Heart Association, Attn: Imogene Orfield, treasurer, P.O. Box 297, Wytheville, VA 24382 or the Sulfur Springs Cemetery, P.O. Box 352, Chilhowie, VA 24319.

Blevins
Claude A. Blevins Sr., age 74, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Blevins was the owner and operator of Claude Blevins’ Garage for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Blevins.
Surviving are one daughter, Julia Blevins, Chilhowie; four sons, Claude A. Blevins Jr., Atlanta, Ga., James W. Blevins, Chilhowie, John E. Blevins, Crossville, Tenn., and Jack A. Blevins, Marion; one brother, Baker "Doc" Blevins, Havre de Grace, Md.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Buchanan
John Kimble Buchanan, age 75, of Rich Valley, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Buchanan is survived by his wife, Louise Buchanan of Rich Valley; one son, Howard Buchanan of Rich Valley; five daughters, Hazel Armstrong of Ceres, Betty Sheets and Margaret Osborne, both of Atkins, Carrie Cregger and Janet Armstrong, both of Marion; six sisters, Lucy Thompson and Carolyn Gross, both of Marion, JoAnn Phillips of North Carolina, Katherine Goad, Pearl Nicholas and Janie Harris, all of Maryland; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley.

Carter
Ruth Virginia Carter, age 84, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor.
Ms. Carter was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had retired from the Southwestern Virginia State Hospital with over 23 years of service.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Carter Baumgardner.
Survivors include one son, Ralph Carter, Marion; many loving friends.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. in Bradley’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
Bradley’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

French
Alton P. French, age 89, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. French was an active member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and was a local business man for many years. He was a longtime member of the Marion Masonic Lodge #31 A.F. & A.M.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Atkins French of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty F. and David Russell of Clarksville; two grandchildren, Jennifer R. Whitlock of Burlington, N.C., and Sara R. Sweet of Raleigh, N.C.; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, P.O Box 151, Marion, VA 24354.

Hastings
Nannie McNeil Hastings, age 90, widow of Edwin Warren Hastings, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Hastings was a member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church. Her life was filled with raising her four children and helping her husband of 63 years with the family business, The Regent.
She is survived by four sons, Edwin C. Hastings of Roanoke, Robert A. Hastings of Nashville, Tenn., Warren C. Hastings of Marion, and Charles L. Hastings of Goldsboro, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11 .am. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Alan Gray and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354, The American Cancer Society, c/o Lynn Manweiler, 448 Cummings Street, Box 350, Abingdon, VA 24210 or the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church, 139 West Main St., Marion, VA 24354.
