Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Matney
Ralph Lee Matney Sr., age 85, of Speedwell, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000.
Mr. Matney was born in Sugar Grove on June 29, 1914, the son of the late Bennie Porter Matney and Pearl Brewer Matney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Laurie Wilkinson Matney in May 1998; three brothers, Benjamin, Otis and Franklin Matney; and two sisters, Myrtle Matney and Betty Van Devender Elrod Roston.
Mr. Matney was an active member of the Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church, The Salvation Army, Club 55 Bowling League, the Wythe County Democratic Party and a former member of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors. He was a self-educated man and was well versed in the Holy Scriptures.
He is survived by two sons, Ralph L. Matney Jr., and his wife Wanda of Speedwell, and Raymond E. Matney and his wife Nancy of Rural Retreat; one daughter, Shirley M. Caudill and her husband J.C. of Speedwell; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one brother, James Matney of Merlin, Ore.; three sisters, Maude Bringman and Virginia Calihan, both of Lake Placid, Fla., and Bonnie Halter of Royal Oak, Mich.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church in Speedwell with interment in the church cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to the Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
Gillman Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of arrangements.

Powers
William Allen Powers, age 53, died at his home in Atkins.
Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Powers.
He is survived by his mother, Beulah Davis Taylor; two sisters, Janet Haley and Becky Parks, both of Marion; four brothers, Jeff Powers of Sugar Grove, Edward Powers of South Carolina, Harley Haga of Kingsport, and Wayne Haga of Radford; several nieces and nephews including a special great-niece, Jessica Sexton and a special great-nephew, Nathan Quillen.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Burial followed in Thomas Cemetery.
Barnett’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Slagle
George Washington "G.W." Slagle, age 80, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 at his home in Limestone, Tenn.
Mr. Slagle was a native of Limestone and the son of the late George Washington and Lucy Reed Slagle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Sluss Slagle in 1994; four brothers and two sisters.
He was a minister, farmer and carpenter. A well-known minister and evangelist, Brother Slagle faithfully served his Lord for almost 60 years. He pastored and evangelized in North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee. He was a member of Limestone Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Dorothy) Osborne, Weber City; two sons, Earl Slagle, Florida, and Steve Slagle, Afton, Tenn.; one sister, Mary Armentrout, Telford, Tenn.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial were held Monday, Feb. 7, in Limestone, Tenn.

Wyatt
Flora Bell Wyatt, age 94, of Chilhowie, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000 in Valley Health Care Center.
Mrs. Wyatt was a member of the First Christian Church of Marion. She was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Wyatt and Herman Kelly Wyatt Sr., and a daughter, Anna Lee Richardson.
She is survived by two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Connie and Dean Adams, and Kitty and Gary Coalson, all of Chilhowie; three grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Jeff and Carol Wyatt, Marion, Kelly and Jessie Wyatt, Riner, and Greg Richardson and Susie Wagoner, Salem; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Feb. 9, at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Middlefork Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Diversional Group at Valley Health Care Center.

Cassell
Thomas "Tom" Peery Cassell Sr., age 79, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Feb, 8, 2000 at Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Cassell grew up on his father’s farm, "Creekside," in the Black Lick Community of Wythe County. He went to the elementary school on Black Lick and graduated from Rural Retreat High School in 1938. He attended Virginia Tech, joined the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and in 1953 he started his own farm, "Poverty Hollow" in the Black Lick Community. He raised dairy cattle, sheep, and beef until 1989 when he sold the farm and retired in Rural Retreat.
Mr. Cassell was a director of the Grayson-Carroll-Wythe Mutual Insurance Company from 1969 to 1996. He enjoyed retirement and was vice mayor of Rural Retreat and an active member of Grace Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Steven Sidney Cassell Sr., and Mary Peery Cassell.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Helen Goodman Cassell; two sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas Peery Cassell Jr., Rural Retreat, and Bennet Goodman and Teresa Cassell, Blacksburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane Cassell and Bill Cooper, Tucker, Ga.; six grandchildren, John Cassell and Marni Wohlford, both of Rural Retreat, Amy Cassell of Chicago, Ill., David Cassell of Blacksburg, Shannon Cooper and Joanne Cooper, both of Tucker, Ga.; one sister, Helen Topham, Springfield, Mass.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 11, at 11a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Joseph Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the Black Lick Cemetery. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or the Organ Fund of Grace Lutheran Church.

Crowe
James V. "Bud" Crowe, age 66, of Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000.
Mr. Crowe was born Nov. 23, 1933 at Volney, the son of Roy Owen and Fannie Mae Suitt Crowe. He was owner and operator of Bud’s Auto Inc., Independence, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Kay Parks Crowe.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Sandy Crowe, Independence; one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Tony Shinault, Hillsville; three grandsons, Justin Crowe, Dakota Crowe, and Dane Shinault; his mother and spouse, Fannie and Laxton Hutton, Marion; one sister, Betty C. Blevins, Mouth of Wilson; a very special friend, Bill Sebastian, Sparta, N.C.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Austin Goodwin, Pastor Ron Rogers and the Rev. Sam Holder officiating. Interment was in Hall Cemetery in Volney. Military graveside rites were conducted by Grayson County VFW Post #7726. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bud Crowe Youth Foundation for Racing, c/o Grayson National Bank, P.O. Box 186, Independence, VA 24348.

Sexton
Pearl Nadine Sexton, age 71, of Culpeper, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 in Culpeper Health Care Center.
She is survived by one sister, Mattie Sloper of Manassas; one brother, James Sexton of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. in Barnett’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Medley officiating. Burial was in Meek Cemetery.

Fenyk
John Raymond Fenyk Sr., D.V.M., age 79, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Dr. Fenyk was born July 23, 1920 in New York City, the son of Michael and Sophia Bracio Fenyk. He received his B.S. from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., in 1942. He received his D.V.M. from Kansas State University in 1946. He was a professor of Animal Husbandry at the University of Arkansas in the late 1940s.
For more than 30 happy years, Dr. Fenyk practiced general veterinary medicine in Marion and surrounding counties. He was proud of his profession and promoted it vigorously, contributing significantly to the construction of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association headquarters building in Richmond. He was a life member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and was quite active in the Southwest Virginia Veterinary Association, the Southern Veterinary Medical Association and the East Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Fenyk was a co-founder of Virginia House Furniture Corporation which ultimately became Smyth County’s largest employer. He was active in the Democratic Party and was always ready for a lively political discussion. A beloved husband and father, Dr. Fenyk never met a man he did not like and in his years of retirement, he enjoyed his family, learning, walking, watching the stock market and impromptu card games.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Maxine Crawford Fenyk of Marion and St. Petersburg, Fla.; five children and spouses, John Raymond Fenyk Jr., M.D., and Dianne C. Fenyk of Golden Valley, Minn.; Royann Michele Fenyk-King and Norman Mitchell King of Alexandria; Cynthia Sue Fenyk and Francis X. Courtney of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Judith Evelyn Fenyk-Melody D.V.M. and David P. Melody of Middletown, N.H.; Mark Brach Fenyk and Sharon L. Fenyk of Marion; one sister, Sophia (Penny) Fenyk Scully of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, Walter D. Fenyk and wife Rita of Harlingen, N.J.; seven grandchildren: Heather, Julie and Faith Fenyk; Jack and Marin Courtney; Austin and Dylan Melody; one niece and four nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Greene
Helen Walker Greene, age 79, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000 in the Grayson Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Independence.
Mrs. Greene was born in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late Roy and Ellen Stein Walker. She and her husband, the late John W. Greene, moved to Wythe County from Winchester in 1972.
Mrs. Greene was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where she was a nurse.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Meg G. and Thomas E. Wilson of Monterey, and Cass Greene of Boone, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kari Wilson Grant, John Samuel Wilson, Katie Wilson and Joanna Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Megan Grant and T.J. Grant.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat.

Mussick
Michael D. Mussick, age 16, of Troutdale, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000 at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax from injuries received in an automobile accident near Volney.
Mr. Mussick was born Sept. 1, 1983 at Marion, the son of Sammy and Barbara Mussick.
He was a junior at Grayson County High School.
He was preceded in death by a maternal great-grandmother, Maxine Perkins.
He is survived by his parents, Sammy and Barbara Mussick, Troutdale; one sister, Samantha Mussick of the home; one brother, Travis Mussick of the home; paternal grandparents, Casey and Ina Mussick, Troutdale; maternal grandparents, Ed and Libby Haga, Marion; paternal great-grandmother, Ollis Mussick, Independence; great-grandmothers, Emma Inscor, Darlington, Md., and Pearl Cleary of Troutdale; several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Tolliver and the Rev. Earnie Powers officiating. Interment will be in Troutdale Cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Rugby Rescue Squad, 1845 Rugby Road, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363.

Barlow
Dorothy Blevins Barlow, age 64, of West Grove, Penn., formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000 in Chester County Hospital.
Mrs. Barlow was born in Marion, the daughter of the late Leonard and Mae Blevins of Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Barlow, formerly of Chilhowie, and by her son, James Barlow.
She is survived by four children, Teresa Wilson and Donna Barlow, both of West Grove, Penn., David Barlow of Avondale, Penn., and Connie Muncy of Whiteville, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stan Blevins and Jim Blevins, both of Marion; four sisters, Katherine Adkins of Abingdon, Geneva Barlow of Avondale, Penn., Mary Perez of Kennett Square, Penn., and Josie Wilson of West Grove, Penn.; a nephew, John Blevins of Marion.
Funeral arrangements and burial will be in Kennett Square, Penn.
