Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Francis
Jesse G. Francis Jr., of Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse G. Francis Sr., and was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Francis was a native of Baltimore, Md., and had been living in Marion for the past six years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam. He was employed with Kmart of Wytheville.
Survivors include his wife, Cassandra L. Francis, Marion; his mother, Goldie Francis, Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Ann Weitzel and Doris Smullin, both of Baltimore, Md.; many nieces and nephews and one great-nephew.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 2, at 8 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Military honors were conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Interment was private.
Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Goins
Oleta V. Goins, age 74, of Chilhowie, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of Daniel Goins.
Mrs. Goins was a resident of the Ridgefield Retirement Center in Seven Mile Ford. She was a graduate of Douglass School and attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C. She did graduate studies at Hampton University.
Mrs. Goins was a teacher (retired) for the Galax City School System and was a long-standing member of Harris-Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She was also a member of various educational and social organizations.
Survivors include one sister, Myrtle Smith, Des Moines, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, in Harris-Anderson AME Zion Church with the Rev. Sherman W. Forney officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Harris-Anderson Church. Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, in Old Town Cemetery, Galax.
Robinson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Hash
Ruby Cook Hash, age 78, widow of Oscar Hash, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a wonderful homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Hash of Marion; one cousin, Retha Hamm of Elkton, Md.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Havens
William U. Havens, age 83, of Spring Lake, N.C., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996 in the Womack Army Medical Center in Ft. Bragg, N.C.
Mr. Havens was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Army as a Master Sgt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Henry and Ruth Rose Havens.
Surviving are his wife, Ok Yon Havens, of the home; one daughter, Peggy Shepherd, Arizona; one son, William J. Havens, Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Muncy Havens, Atkins, Walter Havens, Sugar Grove, and Floyd Havens, Marion; two sisters, Beatrice Parks, Sugar Grove, and Della M. Stowers, Wytheville; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Adcock Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Lafayette Park-West in Fayetteville, N.C., with military honors.
Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake, N.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Johnson
Fannie Irene Kilby Johnson, age 79, of Grant, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Robert Young, Grant.
She was born Aug. 13, 1917 at Helton, N.C., to Lee and Connie Brooks Kilby.
Surviving are her husband, Bruce Johnson; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Robert Young, Grant; four grandchildren and spouses: Linda and David Kalapko, Round Rock, Texas, Ricky and Debbie Young, Independence, Dianna and Bobby Campbell, Mouth of Wilson, and Cindy and Dave Wood, Sugar Grove; eight great-grandchildren: Matthew Anders, Anthony Young, Nathaniel Anders, Christie Parsons, Tiffany Young, Marlin Campbell, Alyssa Weaver, Zachary Wood; one great-great-granddaughter, Anna Parsons; three sisters, Barbara Kilby, Grant, Maxine Barnes, Norfolk, and Iva Roten, High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Dean Kilby, Woodbridge, and Carol Kilby, Rugby; a special sister-in-law, Susie Johnson, Rugby.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Chapel in Independence with the Rev. Wilmer Shepherd, the Rev. Rex Hall and the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. Interment was in Corinth Cemetery, Rugby. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association for Research, National Headquarters, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, Ill. 60611 or to the Rugby Rescue Squad, Rt. 2, Box 195, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363.

Kelly
Pastor Gary Edsel Kelly, age 64, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 at his home in Crockett.
He was born Nov. 26, 1932 in Glade Hill (Franklin County), the son of the late Lucian Ted and Minnie Alice Smith Kelly.
Pastor Kelly was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a former fireman with the Roanoke City Fire Dept., and had worked for the Texaco Oil Co. He served as Lutheran pastor at the Floyd-Willis Parish for 11 years and the Cripple Creek Parish in Crockett for 14 years.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Kelly, of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Deidre Kelly and Garvice Jones, Boones Mill, and Christina Marie Kelly, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary William Kelly, Timothy David and Jennifer Kelly and Michael Goebel and Judy Kelly, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren: Sean Kelly, Erin Kelly, Brandon Kelly, Katie Kelly, Monica Cowden, Angela Jones and Amy Jones; his mother-in-law, Admiral Cole, Roanoke.
A funeral celebration will be held today, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church with Bishop Richard F. Bansemer, Pastor Jim Bangle, Pastor Ed Schaack and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the United Lutheran Memorial Fund.
The family will receive friends at the residence at any time and following the services at the church with a potluck luncheon.

Legard
Mary Lee Legard, age 83, widow of Charles W. "Jack" Legard, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bob Legard and Tom Legard.
She is survived by three grandsons, Rick Legard of Marshall, N.C., James Legard of Chilhowie, and Tony Legard of Bristol; four granddaughters, Cindy Cunningham of Westerville, Ohio, Debbie West of Jacksonville, Fla., Linda Kiddman of Roanoke, and Brenda Colgan of Burlington, N.J.; 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in Seaver-Brown Chapel with Dr. William A. Slater and the Rev. Gene Little officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA 24354. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral chapel.

Parks
Lois Hazel Lanter Parks, age 74, of Atkins, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born in Fries, the daughter of Joseph Christopher and Pearl Hall Lanter. She lived most of her life in the Smyth County area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elisha Josh Parks; one son, Otis Lee Parks; and one daughter, Margaret Gay Parks Kunkel.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Steve Tilson, Elizabeth Kay and Howard Kestner, and Judy Mae Nelson, all of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Maston and Ethel Parks of Monrovia, Md.; one sister, Effie Mae Padgett of Woodlawn; five grandchildren: Mindy Parks Green and husband Bill, Anita Parks, Jennifer Nelson, Julia Nelson and Ashley Kunkel; one grandson, Dustin Kunkel; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 4, at 10:45 a.m. in Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Weston Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow in Wassum Cemetery.

Powers
Grace Ruth Powers, age 92, of Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was the widow of Charlie Powers.
Survivors include two nephews, Lee Manuel, Missouri, and Jesse Manuel, Arkansas; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at the funeral home.

Roulo
Craig Philip Roulo, age 17, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 at his home in Marion.
Survivors include his father, Craig F. Roulo, Marion; his mother, Jane M. Heymach, Richmond; his grandparents, Raymond and Joyce Roulo, Portville, N.Y.; one brother, Bobby Roulo, of the home; his stepmother, Shelby Pierce, Marion; three stepsisters: Tina, Chasity, and Charity, all of Marion; one stepbrother, Steven, Marion; one uncle, Scott Roulo.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Shupe
Lawrence Lester Shupe, age 82, of Meadowview, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He was a farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Tomlinson, Marion; one sister, Ruby Tolliver, Abingdon.
Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, in Knollkreg Memorial Park with the Rev. Wayne Parsons officiating.
Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Steele
Laura H. Steele, age 73, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Steele.
Mrs. Steele was a native of Smyth County and the widow of William O. Steele. She was a member of Russell's Chapel. She was employed at Superior Mills in Chilhowie as a supervisor for several years and had worked as a nurse's aid at the Smyth County Health Department.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Pat) Barr, and Mrs. Hurley (Brenda) Davis Jr., both of Marion; two sisters, Pauline Hash, Baltimore, Md., and Louise Barker, Marion; three grandchildren, William Chad Barr, Jerrie Lynne Barr, and Matthew Scott Davis; two great-grandchildren, Alexandria Nicole Barr and Matthew Branson Morrison Davis; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Umbarger
Alma Pearl Umbarger, age 88, widow of George E. Umbarger, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Stephen Creger of Crockett; two sons and daughter-in-law, James H. Umbarger, and Ben F. and Jane Umbarger, all of Atkins; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.
