Snider
Mae Haga Snider, age 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Herman Haga Sr., and her second husband, Conley Snider. She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church and was the daughter of W.C. and Callie Barnett Hockett.
Survivors include two sons, James Herman Haga Jr., Jacksonville, N.C., and Monroe Lee Haga, Marion; four daughters: Jewel Blevins, Mrs. Clifton (Charmie) Blevins, Mrs. Bascom W. (Margaret) Johnson and Doris Winebarger, all of Marion; two stepsons, Clifton Snider, Fern Park, Fla., and Arlen B. Snider, Marion; one stepdaughter, Wilma Sherwood, Bristol; one sister-in-law, Isabell Hockett, Marion; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins, the Rev. Floyd Nelson and Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial was in the West Cemetery.

Blankenbeckler
Walter Neal Blankenbeckler, age 74, of Chilhowie, died on his 74th birthday, Jan. 25, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Dungan Blankenbeckler. He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Blankenbeckler loved hunting and was an accomplished archer, having won the Virginia State Championship title in the sport. He had worked until his retirement at both Burlington Industries, and as a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He had owned and operated Neal's Archery Shop in Chilhowie. He was a member of the Chilhowie Masonic Lodge #250 A.F. & A.M., was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a life member of Marion VFW Post 4667.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David Neal and Linda Blankenbeckler, Bristol; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jim Hutton, Glade Spring; one brother, John Campbell Blankenbeckler, Homasassa, Fla.; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Michelle and Chris Brown, Bristol, Tenn.; one grandson, Neal Hutton, Glade Spring; one infant great-granddaughter, Kayla Louann Brown, Bristol, Tenn.
Memorial services were conducted Monday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Branson officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the St. James Cemetery, Chilhowie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 698, Abingdon, VA 24212-0698.

Blevins
Albert Ford Blevins, age 73, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Blevins was a native of Grayson County. He was a lifetime member of the Lincoln Hill Baptist Church and had worked at the Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant and Virginia House Furniture Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Lura Blevins, and a brother, Earl Blevins.
Survivors include six sisters: Wilma Rotenberry, Mabel Vernon, Blanche Russell, Ruby Woods and Paris Shelton, all of Marion, and Marie King, Groseclose; one sister-in-law, Okie Blevins; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 29, at 2 pm. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Otis Barker and the Rev. Jesse Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosewood Memory Gardens, Rural Retreat.

Burchett
John Thomas Burchett, age 85, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lilyar Tilson Burchett.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald A. and Sadie Burchett of Marion, Neal E. and Peggy Burchett of Chilhowie, and Johnny L. and Barbara Burchett of Sugar Grove; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred E. and Donald Williams of Randleman, N.C., and Darlene and Ray Rogers of Friendsville, Tenn.; six grandchildren: Michelle Tucker, April Grady, Kimberly Bliley, Angela Burchett, Adam Burchett and Jonathan Burchett; two great-grandchildren, Madison Williams and Steven Tucker; one sister, Ruth Null of Cleveland, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Sherman Dempsey, the Rev. Donald Medley and the Rev. John Tilson officiating. Burial will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie.

Colley
Edward Eugene "Eddie" Colley, age 44, of Morristown, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997 in Farmington, Conn.
He was retired with 20 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was currently employed with Builders Transport, White Pines, Tenn.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Williams Colley; one son, Jason Colley, of the home; his mother, Eleanor Holmes, Saltville; his stepfather, Lee Holmes, Saltville.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Mullinax officiating. Entombment was in Mount Rose Cemetery Mausoleum with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jason Colley Trust Fund, c/o Builders Transport Inc., P.O. Box 440, White Pines, Tenn. 37890.

Crawford
Alma Nell Henderlite Crawford, age 80, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Atkins, the daughter of the late William F. and Nellie Cora Musser Henderlite Sr. Mrs. Crawford was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and owner-operator of the Econowash Laundromat in Rural Retreat. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Franklin Crawford.
She is survived by two sisters, Thelma Harden, Wytheville, and Blanche Gouge, Bakersville, N.C.; a special great-nephew and wife, Skipper and Stephanie Patton, Rural Retreat; several nieces, nephews, other great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

DeBord
William Allen "Babo" DeBord, age 50, of Saltville, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of the Church of God in Allison's Gap where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for several years. He was a member of Saltville Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Pam Swartz DeBord; three sisters, Mrs. Larry (Martha) Haynes and Mrs. Todd (Vickie) Stacy, both of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Mrs. Dicky (Jackie) Nutter, Blountville, Tenn.; three brothers, Edward T. DeBord Sr., Mike DeBord, and Darrell S. DeBord, all of Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in Allison's Gap Church of God with the Rev. David Mumpower and Dr. Woodrow McIntyre officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Allison's Gap Church of God.

Goad
Ray Goad, age 77, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997 at his home in Saltville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ora Buchanan Goad.
He was a native of West Virginia and had lived in the Saltville area for 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Goad, Abingdon; one daughter, Mrs. H.E. (Betty) Goad Martin, Lexington, N.C.; one grandson, Michael Goad, Abingdon.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon with the Rev. Darrell Henley officiating.
Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Hamm
Paul Jackson Hamm, age 54, of Finksburg, Md., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997 in Carol County General Hospital, Westminister, Md. He was a native of Chilhowie, was an employee of the Suburban Propane Gas Co., Westminister, Md., and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Dowell Hamm; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula D. and Chad Peyton, Westminister, Md.; his father and mother, James P. and Mary St. John Hamm, Marion; one brother, David M. Hamm, Marion; one sister, Martha Hamm Eller, Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 29, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Hopkins
John Warner Hopkins, age 89, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Routh Hopkins, and a son, Johnny Hopkins.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Hopkins, Kensington, Md., and Ralph Hopkins, Frederick, Md.; three daughters, Vetta Jones, Thomasville, N.C., Verna Quinn and Nola Willett, both of Seminole, Fla.; two sisters, Kathrine Reel, Marion, and Josephine H. Frye, Chilhowie; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with the Rev. Bobby Briggs officiating.

Huffman
Barbara Huffman, age 50, of Kernersville, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997 in Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro.
Ms. Huffman was a Senior Claims Supervisor for Kemper Insurance Company and was a former part-time funeral director for Hanes Lineberry. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Blaine and Hazel Sage. She was a member of Willomore Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Mark Cooper of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, Roger Ellis (Skip) Huffman Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., and Brian Keith Huffman and fiancee Ginny R. Stallings of Kernersville, N.C.; three sisters, Elaine Sage of Greensboro, N.C., Dr. Phyllis Atwell and husband Bobby Atwell of Banner Elk, N.C., and Debbie Ross and husband Ty Ross of Summerfield, N.C.; three brothers, Richard Sage and wife Lynda Sage of Atlanta, Ga., William (Bill) Sage and wife Dee Sage, and Steve Sage, all of Greensboro, N.C.; one grandson, Joshua Mark Cooper; 10 nieces, eight nephews, and two great-nieces; a longtime best friend, Teresa I. Humphreys.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at Willomore Baptist Church with burial in Guilford Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

Paul
Kem Allen Paul, age 36, of Citrus Heights, Calif., formerly of Saltville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997 in Citrus Heights.
Survivors include his mother, Darlene S. Paul, Citrus Heights, Calif.; his father, Fred W. Paul, Citrus Heights, Calif.; two sisters, Graham Ellen Nipper, Marion, and Lisa Caderberg, Citrus Heights, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Pennington
George William Pennington, age 70, of Atkins, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Pennington was a native of Smyth County but had lived in the Havre de Grace, Md., area for 25 years where he retired from Aberdeen Proven Grounds in Aberdeen. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. He attended the First Church of God on Chatham Hill Road in Marion.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Lynn Daniels, Germantown, Md., and Brenda Lee Dillinger, Prince Frederick, Md.; two sons, William Randall Pennington Sr., and Bobby Lee Pennington, both of Laurel, Md.; one sister, Hallie Welch, Atkins; five grandchildren, William Randall Pennington Jr., Frank Marcus Pennington, Bobby Lee Silberstein, Vickie Kokivias, and Meg Daniels.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Thompson and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.
