Cecil W. Hodnett

CHATHAM, Va. - Cecil W. Hodnett, 77, of 3164 Bearskin Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002 at VA Veteran Care Center in Salem.

Born July 26, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John M. and Odella Wright Hodnett.

He was married to Vernell Roher Hodnett, who survives. He was a member of Callands Baptist Church and was a World War II Army Veteran. He was a retired tobacco farmer and had worked for McLaughlin Supply and Danville Memorial Hospital.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Earl Clifton Hodnett and Cecil D. Hodnett, both of Chatham; one daughter, Brenda L. Hodnett-Hampton of Martinsville; a foster son, Raymond Bland of Danville; three brothers, Eugene Hodnett, Morris Hodnett, both of Chatham, and Eric Hodnett of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Callands Baptist Church with the Rev. Obadele St. George officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 2-7 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Nowlin Landrum

DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Nowlin Landrum, 81, of 229 Ingram Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had resided for four years. She had been in declining in health for six years.

Born July 11, 1921, in the former Spray Community of Eden, N.C., she was the daughter of E.A. Nowlin and Ella Bowers Nowlin.

She lived most of her life in Danville and retired in 1983 from Dan River, Inc. where she worked in the 4-A weave room for 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane L. Mangus of Danville; one son, Willis Landrum Jr. of Sandy Level; three sisters, Peggy N. Adkins of Baltimore, Md., Mary N. West of Spartanburg, S.C. and Patsy N. Lowery of Danville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one brother, Jack Nowlin and one sister, Ruby N. Adkins.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Central and Western Virginia Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 310, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

Beulah Stone Martin

GRETNA, Va. - Beulah Stone Martin, 60, of 696 Starkey Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Born Nov. 15, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Gracie Stone, who survives and Bea Stone, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jimmy Martin of the residence; one daughter, Lisa Mae Hall of Evington; five sons, Charles Martin of Altavista, Henry Lee Martin of Hurt, James M. Martin of Gladys, Edward Martin of Long Island, and Keith Martin of Gretna; seven sisters, Willie Mae Johnson of Willingboro, N.J., Virginia Martin of Altavista, Joann Stone of Hurt, Deanna Gregory of Danville, Mildred Martin of Long Island, Viola Tyler of Norfolk and Gracie Ward of Gretna; four brothers, Willie Stone, Ryland Stone, Roosevelt Stone, all of Gretna and Jack Hubbard of Hurt; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by four sisters, Flossie Dickerson, Christine Gilbert, Cora Boone and Gertrude Lane; and one brother, Charlie Stone.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Staunton Baptist Church with Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

John Thomas Owen Jr.

HALIFAX, Va. - John Thomas Owen Jr., 68, of 3235 James D. Hagood Highway, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 28, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Thomas Owen Sr. and Jennie Canada Owen.

He was married to Lanier Guill Owen and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of Halifax, he is survived by one daughter, Jonci Owen Berneche of Scottsburg; two brothers, Clyde H. Owen of Scottsburg and Earl D. Owen of Halifax; three sisters, Rosa O. Powell of South Boston, Ruby O. Watts of Harrisburg, N.C. and Jeanette O. Ligon of Scottsburg; and one granddaughter.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Robert Kevin Powell

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Kevin Powell, 48, of 203 Westview Drive, died Thursday, August 29, 2002 at 7:09 a.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born in Galax on August 12, 1954, he was the son of Dallas Eugene Powell, who predeceased him and Eva Sue Morris Powell, who survives.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Crystal Powell and Brandy Powell; one granddaughter, Cayla Powell; and one grandson, Thomas Barker, all of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Stephen White officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence, 203 Westview Drive.

Martha Terry Rowland

NATHALIE, Va. - Martha Terry Rowland, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 23, 1916, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Sam Hubbard Terry and Ava Millner Terry.

She was married to Jack William Rowland and was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.

She is survived by one son, Marshall H. Rowland of Nathalie; two sisters, Elizabeth Honnicutt of Danville and Ava Martin of Lynchburg; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Marion Powell; and two sons, Gordon Rowland and Jack Rowland.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles and the Rev. Coy Terry officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials be made to the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department.

Garland Lee Samuels Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Garland Lee Samuels Jr., 52, of 1216 Afton Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.

Born March 25, 1950, in Clumberland, Wis., he was the son of Garland Lee Samuels Sr. and Gertrude Carlson Samuels.

He married Debbie Walker Samuels on May 24, 1980. He lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where prior to his decline in health, he was General Manager for Dan Valley Wholesale Florist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard and was a member of the V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post 647. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Shawn D'Wayne Samuels and Nicholas Paul Samuels, both of the residence; one daughter, Brittany Megan Samuels, also of the residence; two sisters, JoAnn Davis of Dry Fork and Judith Lee Samuels of Danville; two brothers, Randy Samuels of Axton and Tommy Samuels of Ringgold; and two stepsisters, Teressa Barbour and Karen Agee, both of Ringgold.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. H. Dale Proctor officiating and military honors by American Legion Post 1097. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Walter Benjamin Street

DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Benjamin Street, 74, of 1992 Mount View Road, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at the residence.

Born Feb. 7, 1928, in Springfield, N.J., he was the son of Thomas and Sarah Tucker Street.

He was married to Irene Shorts Street. Before retiring, he was a long distance trucker driver for more than 40 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Vonda Slade of Greensboro, N.C. and Tracey Johnson of Danville; one sister, Dorothy Harris of Springfield, N.Y.; and one brother, Ernest Street of East Orange, N.J.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins is in charge of arrangements.

Algie F. Bradshaw

DANVILLE, Va. - Algie F. Bradshaw, Sr., 79, of 2271 Robinhood Drive, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 4, 1922, he was the son of Eugene Bradshaw and Lillie Bell Henderson, both deceased. He was married to Sarah Dillard Bradshaw, who survives. He was a retired employee of the Diston Corp.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Melba Lyde of Philadelphia, and Sandra Jones of Washington, D.C.; four sons, William Bradshaw and Kelvin Bradshaw, Sr., both of Martinsville, Steve Bradshaw, Sr. of Danville and Algie Bradshaw, Jr. of Philadelphia; and one sister, Venettta Snipes of Philadelphia. In addition, there is a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2271 Robinhood Drive.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the East New Hope Baptist Church. The Rev. Rufus Fuller will officiate. Interment will follow in the Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

Haywood Bennett Collins

DANVILLE, Va. - Haywood Bennett Collins, age 79, of 6089 Kenridge Circle, Danville, passed away Sept. 8, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center, Danville.

Mr. Collins was born July 8, 1923, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Wade Collins and Octava Shelton Collins. He was also predeceased by his wife, Peggy Moore Collins.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelia C. Wood and her husband, Steve of Danville; one sister, Lucille C. Dalton of Gretna; three brothers, Elton Collins of Martinsville, Allie Collins of Gretna and Wayne Collins of Chatham.

He was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.

Mr. Collins was predeceased by one sister, Agnes Collins; and one brother, Rudolph Collins.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

The family received friends Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Gayle S. Crumpton

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Gayle S. Crumpton, 62, of 239 Foster Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at her residence following several months of declining health.

She was born in Alamance County Sept. 21, 1939. She was the daughter of Fred and Mary Sue Hicks Stuck.

She graduated from Bartlett-Yancey High School and attended UNC-G. She was also a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, and she was the Director of the Board of Elections of Caswell County and was involved in the Relay for Life cancer program.

Funeral services will be Tuesday 2:30 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bryan Faggart and Jerel Law. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors are husband, Ronnie Crumpton of the home, a daughter, Rhonda Crumpton of Greensboro, a son Ross Crumpton and his wife Sabrina of Yanceyville, one sister Camilla Law and husband Charles of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends Monday 7-9 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Edna Haltiwanger Derrick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Edna Haltiwanger Derrick, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Presbyterian Hospital after a very brief illness. She was born in Salley, S.C., on July 31, 1909, the only child of Edwin Gantt and Belle McMillan Haltiwanger. She graduated from Coker College in 1931 and was married to William Edward Derrick on June 15, 1932. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1984. She retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System having taught at Piedmont and Spaugh Junior High Schools.

She lived in the Paw Creek community since 1943 and was an active member of Thrift United Methodist Church. She continued to teach the Ladies Bible Class until the Sunday before her death. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, ADK Sorority, and Pilot Club. She was a volunteer for Bethlehem Center for more than 20 years and a life member of United Methodist Women.

She is survived by five children: Mary Henry and her husband Jerry of Shelby, N.C., Edwin Derrick of Salley, S.C., Charles Derrick and his wife Judy of Danville, David Derrick and his wife Barbara of Charlotte, and Dick Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chad Derrick and his wife, Kim of Charlotte; Ryan Derrick of Raleigh; David Henry and his wife, Clare Hirn of Louisville, Ky.; Joe Henry and his wife Melanie Ciccone of South Pasadena, Calif.; Catherine Twomey and her husband, Patrick of Appleton, WI; Andy Henry and his wife, Natalie Cole of Royal Oak, Mich.; and Reed Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thrift United Methodist Church with the Reverend Loretta Stutz, the Reverend Dr. Jeff Pattersosn and the Reverend Gerald L. Ramsey, officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel.

Louise Osborne Hedrick

CHATHAM, Va. - Louise Osborne Hedrick, 75, of 111 Whittle Street, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 30, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Bob Osborne and Elsie Atkinson Osborne.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet L. Hedrick of Worcester, Mass.; a son, C. Russell Hedrick of Chatham; a sister, Virginia O. Saunders of Chatham; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clearance Berkley Hedrick.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chatham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Charles Wickham officiating. Interment will be in the Chatham Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of the son, 226 Whittle Street.
