Anna Jarrett

DANVILLE, Va. - Anna Lucille Gibson Jarrett, 77, of 34 Elizabeth St., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at 5:30 p.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Beverley Gibson and Annie Kate Rigney Gibson.

She was married to James A. Jarrett, who predeceased her May 6, 1998.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Danville. Prior to retiring, she owned and operated Lucille's Beauty Shop on Dula Street.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Dorothy Jarrett Walton of Ferrum; one stepson, James D. Jarrett of Danville; and one sister, Cora Meadows of Danville; 14 step-grandchildren, 33 step-great-grandchildren and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Rowland

HURT, Va. - Ray Wyatt Rowland, 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Salem.

Born Dec. 19, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edison Smith Rowland and Alice Saunders Rowland.

He was married to Kitty Rowland, who survives.

He was a member of the Altavista Moose Club.

In addition to his wife of Altavista, survivors include one daughter, Adriana Prettyman of Altavista; five brothers, Luther Rowland of Chatham, Guy Rowland of Gretna, Raymond Rowland of Evington, George Rowland and Kenneth Rowland, both of Hurt; three sisters, Nan Jacobs of Gretna, Beulah Shelton of Danville and Naomi Fletcher of Tennessee.

He was predeceased by a brother, Russell Rowland.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Finch and Finch Chapel, Altavista, with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Finch and Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, and at other times at the residence of his sister, Nan Jacobs, 5833 Telegraph Road, Gretna.

Marvin Stone

DANVILLE, Va. - Marvin Clay Stone, 73, of 991 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 4, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of the Rev. Sanders and Margaret Stone.

He was married to Doris Kate Walker Stone, who died on Dec. 11, 1988.

He was retired from the City of Danville's public works deptartment after 28 years of employment.

Survivors include one son, Marvin Stone Jr. of Danville; one stepson, Robert J. Mills of Danville; two brothers, Eppie Stone of Stokesdale, N.C., and John Stone of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Shelby Polas of Danville; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, 977 Mount Cross Road.

William Dickerson

AMHERST, Va. - William Henry Dickerson, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born April 23, 1914, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was the son of Alexandra Dickerson and Mattie Cox Dickerson.

He was married to Annie Matkins Dickerson, who survives.

He was a retired farmer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, William Melvin Dickerson of Tuscon, Ariz.; two daughters, Hazel Margaret Schoolfield and Jeannette Catherine Revis, both of Reidsville, N.C.; one stepson, Kenneth Dickerson of Amherst; one stepdaughter, Agnes Dickerson of Danville; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Lillian Layne, Della Bolton Ross and Irene Edwards; and two brothers, Vester Dickerson and Wesley Dickerson.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

Audrey Hundley

DANVILLE, Va. - Audrey Lumpkin Hundley, 75, of 139 Lowell St., died Thursday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a patient in the hospital for two weeks.

Born May 31, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Hollis Nelson Lumpkin and Ollie Slaughter Lumpkin.

She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Health-Tex retirement club. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was retired from Health-Tex, Inc.

She was married to Ralph M. Hundley.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, survivors include her son, Frank Hundley of Vail, Ariz.; her daughter, Frances H. Craddock of Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Frances L. White and Ruth L. Anderson, both of Danville, and Anne L. Spivey of Yorktown; her brother, Frank M. Lumpkin of Danville; her granddaughter, Morgan Hundley of Bassett.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 139 Lowell St.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Alice Mays

RINGGOLD, Va. - Alice Wilson Mays, 51, of 3641 Milton Hwy., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C. She had been in declining health for three years and a patient at Duke for 15 days.

Born July 4, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Richard Wilson and Tessie Wilson.

She was married July 14, 1979, to Charles Wade Mays Jr., who survives.

She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Kenneth Ray Hardy Jr. of Evington; two brothers, Lonnie Wilson of Hampton and Ricky Wilson of Danville; three sisters, Barbara Ann W. Esom, Janice W. Gill and Betty Lou W. Hayes, all of Danville; and one grandchild.

She was predeceased by one son, Steven Dwayne Hardy.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Hylton Lawrence officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence.

Shirley Reynolds

DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley F. Reynolds, 63, of 257 Fagan St., died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 19, 1935, in Chatham, she was the daughter of Hilda Falls Payne and Willie Sam Falls.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of North Main Baptist Church. She attended Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.

She was self-employed as a private sitter.

Her husband, Richard Reynolds, predeceased her.

In addition to her mother, survivors include three daughters, Nancy B. Davis of Ringgold, Linda Maroco of Pitts Grove, N.J., and Chris C. Franklin of Hurt; two sons, Kenneth Hammock and Joe Bray, both of Danville; a sister, Dorothy Reavis of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Sam Falls of Chatham, W.C. Falls and Odie Falls, both of Hurt; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Eddie Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Bobby Davis

NATHALIE, Va. - Bobby Junior Davis, 50, of 1160 Todds Trail, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born June 16, 1948, he was the son of James Thomas Davis and Bertha Mae Davis.

He was married to Katie Davis, who predeceased him.

He was employed by L.W. Roark and Company as a truck driver, and was a member of the Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church in Brookneal.

Survivors include two sons, Willie J. Burns Jr. of Nathalie and Raymond L. Burns of Suitland, Md.; four daughters, Latonya Davis and Scherrie M. Davis, both of Nathalie, Gracie P. Turner of Suitland, Md. and Angela D. Burns of Fairlakes, Md; two brothers, Semmie A. Davis of Hampton and Billy Davis of Brookneal; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sunflower Baptist Church with the Rev. L.S. Otey officiating. Burial will be in Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Green

BROSVILLE, Va. - Earl Emerson Green, 64, of 2916 Sugartree Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 12:41 a.m. at Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1934, in the Brosville Community, he was the son of Malvin Neal Green and Ruth Haley Green.

He was of the Baptist faith and lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He attended Brosville High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He served in

in the United States Army as military policeman. He was employed as a carpenter before retiring on disability.

Survivors include three brothers, Sam Green of Mt. Cross Road, Russell Green of Baltimore, Md. and Harold Green of Pelham, N.C.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Green Family cemetery, Brosville, with the Rev. Dr. Ross L. Range Sr. officiating and military honors conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

Wesley Pruett

DANVILLE, Va. - Wesley Harden Pruett, 100, of 2526 N. Main St., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been in declining health for two years and a resident of the home since November.

Born Jan. 27, 1899, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Newton Frances Pruett and Ellen Hitt Pruett.

He had lived 100 years and one day in the Danville area and was retired from Dan River Inc. He was also a farmer and gardener. He joined Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1921 and at his death was the oldest member.

He was married to Frances Raynor Pruett, who died in 1988.

Survivors include two stepchildren, Lucy Walters of Arcadia, Fla., and Raymond Vaughn of Leesburg, N.C.; two brothers, George Pruett of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Herman Pruett of Hialeah, Fla. four stepgrandchildren and a number of stepgreat-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Johnson and the Rev. Adolf Oterson officiating.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Bill Hudson

DANVILLE, Va. - William Samuel Hudson, 72, of 503 Northmont Blvd., died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born on May 29, 1926, in Halifax, Va., he was the son of Frank Hudson and Annie Clark Hudson.

He was married to Sylvia Bost Hudson, who survives.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and received the Purple Heart. He was retired from Export Leaf Tobacco Company. He was a life member of The D.A.V. at the A.T. Gammon Post No. 19.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one brother, Kenneth Hudson of S. Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mozelle Vanney of South Boston and Mildred Hudson of Crystal Hill.

His son, William Dean Hudson, died in 1966.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
