Helen Foster

DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Walker Foster, 93, of 224 Courtland St., Apt. 334, died late Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, in Stratford Health Care Center, where she had lived since Nov. 19, 1998.

Born Dec. 16, 1905, in Ruffin, N.C., she was a daughter of Joseph Strader and Ida Cook Strader.

Her husband, John T. Foster, died March 20, 1967.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a charter member of Central Boulevard Church of God. She retired from Dan River Inc. and was a member of the Dan River Retired Employees Club.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. William D. Walker of Cleveland, Tenn.; two daughters, Evelyn W. Jones and Ocie W. Spencer, both of Danville; a half-sister, Naomi Fender of Sparta, N.C.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. John H. Meadows and the Rev. William Michael Walker officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will be at the residence of her daughter, Ocie Spencer, at 113 Burwood Place.

Thomas Frazier

CASCADE, Va. ­ Thomas Edison Frazier, 81, of 721 Locust Drive, died Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1999, at Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center after one year of declining health.

Born March 8, 1917, in Bennetsville, S.C., he was the son of John Boyd Frazier and Carrie Lee Frazier.

He lived most of his life in Danville and worked at Disston Inc. as a guard until his retirement.

He was a member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and Archer T. Gammon Chapter 19 DAV. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Emmie Horne Frazier, who predeceased him Feb. 24, 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruby F. Dahnke of Hawthorne, Fla., and Lynn B. Wilson of Cascade; and two grandchildren.

A cryptside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Richard McDowell officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Lynn B. Wilson, 721 Locust Drive, Cascade.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dale Jones

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Dale Gray Jones, 46, of 866 Grove St., Apt. 4, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 8, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for many years.

Born June 7, 1952, in Danville, he was the son of Thomas G. Jones and Jo Anne Moore Travis, who survives.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and had spent most of his life in Danville. He was a Jehovah's Witness.

In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Wesley Dale Jones of the U.S. Navy and Daniel Wayne Jones of Danville; and one half-brother, Timothy Travis of Danville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Harris officiating.

Curtis Rowland

RINGGOLD, Va. - Millard Curtis Rowland, 73, of 1149 Fall Creek Road, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Duke Medical Center, where he had been a patient for three weeks.

Born Sept. 9, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Swanson Rowland and Mattie Barker Rowland.

He had lived all of his life in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County. He was a retired farmer and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was married on Sept. 30, 1942, to Alise Shelton Rowland, who died Jan. 12.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia R. Rozewicz of Danville and Ellen R. Whitt of Knightdale, N.C.; a son, Richard W. Rowland of Callands; five sisters, Evelyn R. Ferguson of Flint, Mich., Margie R. Petty, Nancye R. Matherly, Ruth R. Williams, all of Danville, and Faye R. Poteat of Providence, N.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Douglas Carroll Rowland; and a brother, Claude Swanson Rowland Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Wilson officiating.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Isla Slaughter

DANVILLE, Va. - Isla Harrelson Slaughter, 97, of 310 Robertson Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.

Born May 5, 1901, in Loris, S.C., she was the daughter of Doc D. Harrelson and Ava Jane Graham Harrelson.

She was married to J. Randolph Slaughter, who died in 1948. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Stermer

DANVILLE, Va. - Beatrice "Bea" E. Stermer, 78, of 4897 Mount Cross Road, Lot 3, died Saturday morning, Feb. 13, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1920, in Corning, N.Y., she was the daughter of Clayton Horace Edwards and Mildred Strait Edwards.

She was a housewife and was of the Catholic faith.

She was married to Maynard George Stermer, who died in August 1982.

Survivors include one son, Ronald G. Stermer of Norman, Okla.; three daughters, Sharon A. Slater of Painted Post, N.Y., Marcia J. Barker of Salisbury, Md., and Linda S. Adkins of Sutherlin; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens, where she will be entombed. Father David McGuire will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Linda S. Adkins, at 300 Golden Lane, Sutherlin, off U.S. 58 east of Danville.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Astin

DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Brown Astin, 96, of 485 Moorefield Bridge Road, died Monday morning, Feb. 15, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in and out of the hospital for seven weeks.

Born Oct. 14, 1902, in Rowan County, N.C., she was the daughter of David S. Brown and Emma Fisher Brown.

She was married to William Linden Astin Sr., who died Feb. 10, 1997.

She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County. She was active in women's circles and various community projects, and was the last surviving charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She worked as a bank teller at American National Bank and Trust Co. for many years before working with Security Bank where she retired.

She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty A. Davidson of Columbus, Ga., Rose Astin of Danville and Jean A. Elliott of Whitmell; one son, William Linden Astin Jr. of Burnsville, N.C.; one brother, Wilford Brown of Granite Quarry, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ascension Lutheran Church with the Rev. Caldwell Day officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Robert Collie

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Junior Collie, 74, of 507 Granville Drive, died Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 3, 1924, in Milton, N.C., a son of Roberson Pendleton Collie and Lessie McCann Collie Coley.

He was employed at Taylor Brothers Garage for 28 years and then with Fuquay Pontiac Inc. until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and the fellowship class.

He was married to the former Lorraine Taylor on Oct. 9, 1948, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two sons, David Harry Collie and his wife Pam of Yanceyville, N.C., and Stephen Thomas Collie and his wife Anne of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Lillie Mae Collie Taylor of Danville; and four grandchildren, Robert Earl Collie, Lauren Nichole Collie and Zachary Bennett Collie, all of Yanceyville, N.C., and Anne Alexandra Collie of Raleigh, N.C.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Clyde Collie and Walter Collie.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will be at the residence. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the North Main Baptist Church Building Fund.

Bryant Fielder

SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Bryant Fielder, 73, of 2912 Jasmine Road, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in the Veterans Hospital, Salem.

Born Oct. 14, 1925, in Bedford County, he was a son of Harry Fielder and Alice Hammock Fielder.

He was married to Missie June Adkins Fielder and was a member of Round Pond Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include five sons, Linwood Fielder and Brock Fielder, both of Gretna, Harry Fielder of Fieldale, Forrest Fielder of Chatham and Joel Fielder of Sandy Level; two daughters, Anna Thompson of Pittsville and Angela Matthews of Sandy Level; four brothers, Herbert Fielder of Bedford, Homer Fielder and David Fielder, both of Illinois, and Edward Fielder of Hurt; three sisters, Sarah Crews of Sandy Level, Pearl Crews of Danville and Betty Short of Gretna; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Allen Fielder; and four brothers, William Fielder, Jimmy Fielder, Everett Fielder and Wayne Fielder.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Round Pond Baptist Church with the Rev. A.A. Blanks and the Rev. John Belderes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his son, Brock Fielder, 1609 N. Main St., Gretna.
