Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Melvin White

CHATHAM, Va. - Melvin White, 55, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at Parks Apartments.

Born March 11, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Daniel and Mary Carter White.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, a farmer, and was employed by Stanley Furniture Company until his health failed.

He is survived by two brothers, Silas White of Callands and Herman White of Danville; and two sisters, Garland White and Sedonia White, both of Roanoke.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home with the Rev. Damon Hairston officiating. Interment will be in Macedonia Church Cemetery.

The family is at the residence of Elnora White, Banister Road, Chatham.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Whitt

MILTON, N.C. - Johnny Edgar Whitt, 68, of 4112 Mountain Hill Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at 2897 Ringgold Church Road, after being in declining health for several months.

Born August 29, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Henry Whitt and Ola Broom Whitt, who predeceased him.

He had lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and in the Caswell County portion of the Mountain Hill community.

He was employed by APAC, formerly Thompson Arthur, prior to being employed by Cloverdale Lumber Company where he was a truck driver for several years.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

He is survived by one daughter, Margaret Whitt Sigmon of Danville; one brother, William Henry Whitt Jr. of Emporia; one sister, Annie W. Young of Danville; and two grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Arthur Whitt.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Duckett officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post#1097.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence of Penny and Lee Adkins, 2897 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold. At other times they will also be at this residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main is in charge of arrangements.

Francis Haden Tucker

HURT, Va. - Francis Haden Tucker, age 70, of 400 Prospect Road, Hurt, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in Greensboro, N.C.

Born November 19, 1931 in Evington, he was a son of the late, Ammon Benjamin Tucker and Blanche Lemon Tucker. Mr. Tucker was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Tucker and a half-sister, Georgie Cox. He was a retired Police Chief for the Town of Altavista and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Tucker was presently working as a salesman for Vista Auto Sales.

He is survived by his wife, Elva Hancock Tucker of the residence; a son, Dennis H. Tucker and his wife Robyn Owen Tucker of Gretna; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Etta and Gene Bennett of Lynchburg and Darlene Littles of Altavista; five grandchildren, Lee Tucker, Emily Tucker, Ben Tucker, Elizabeth Tucker and Sarah Tucker.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002 at New Prospect Baptist Church by Rev. Brady Willis and Mike Stephenson, Minister. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 400 Prospect Road, Hurt.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the New Prospect Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 547, Hurt or the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 727 Hurt, Va. 24563.

Annie Goodson Adams

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Goodson Adams, 97, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born July 1, 1905, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of John David Goodson and Betty Lou Jackson Goodson.

She had lived all her life in the Danville area. She was formerly employed by Dan River Inc.

She was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was married to Curtis Jefferson Adams, who predeceased her on May 4, 1975.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.

The family will receive friends at her niece's residence, Patricia Glenn, 495 West Main St.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or Mount Hermon Baptist Church Building Fund, 4385 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.

Cora Guthrie Barker

DANVILLE, Va. - Cora Guthrie Barker, 81, of 2135 North Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 11, 1921, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Artie Jackson Guthrie and Helen Wrenn Guthrie, both deceased.

She was a member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church where she was a former choir member. She worked as a quality checker for Dan River, Inc.

She married Bennie Marion Barker Jr. on Nov. 19, 1944. He predeceased her on May 12, 1984.

She is survived by two nieces, Joan Hogge of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Jo Ann Whitlow of Ringgold and a nephew, Edwin Terry Adams of Ringgold.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Guthrie Scearce.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David H. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Kentuck Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, c/o Jo Ann Whitlow - Treasurer, 1109 Countryside Drive, Ringgold, VA 24586.

Steven Wayne Bolden

DANVILLE, Va. - Steven Wayne Bolden, 52, of 112 Mitchell St., Apt. 1, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 in Piedmont Mall parking lot.

Born May 21, 1950, in Danville, he was the son of John Henry Bolden Jr. and Estelle Hiatt Bolden, who predeceased him.

He lived all of his life in Danville and was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by one sister, Carolyn Powell of Bedford.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Andy Bolden.

In order to honor his wishes, there will be no funeral service held.

Hattie Gentry

McMillian Bray

CASCADE, Va. - Hattie Gentry McMillian Bray, 87, formerly of 293 Marlin Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center after four years of declining health and one month at the center.

Born July 25, 1915, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Samuel J. McMillian and Flora Simpson McMillian, who predeceased her.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker.

She was married to David Johnson Bray on Dec. 2, 1932. He predeceased her Jan. 12, 2003.

She is survived by one son, David S. Bray of Danville; four daughters, Hazel B. Lewis of Rowland, N.C., Louise B. Ingram of Virginia Beach, Shirley B. Webb of Clintwood, and Elsie B. Powell of Cascade; 13 grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Darryl Wayne Bray and a granddaughter, Patty Williams.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bray Family Cemetery, with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times, they will be at the residence of her son, David S. Bray, 8993 Mount Cross Road, Danville.

Michael Allen Covington

ATLANTA, Ga. - Michael Allen Covington, 40, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at home.

Born Sept. 7, 1962, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of the late Luther Joel Covington Jr. and Grey Chaffin Covington who survives.

He was a member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, of Halifax, Va., he is survived by one sister, Shelley Wray of Fayetteville, N.C.; and one brother, Luther Joel Covington III of Halifax, Va.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of his mother, 4226 Howard P. Anderson Road, Halifax.

Rick Harris

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Mr. Rick Harris, 50, of Hillsborough, N.C., died Wednesday, January 29, at Duke University Medical Center.

Rick was born to Martin and Elouise Harris of Greenville, Mississippi. Surviving are his wife and soulmate, Ava, and a son, Ricky Harris, Jr., of Danville, Virginia, a sister, Teresa Dixon of Danville, Virginia, a brother, Randy Harris of Clarksville, Virginia, two aunts, three uncles and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rick worked for the Herald-Sun Newspaper as a district sales manager. He was a member of the American Legion and a Vietnam veteran. Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 1, at 11 a.m. in the Hillsborough Town Cemetery. The family will be at Walker's Funeral Home from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Walter Clark Lea

BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Walter Clark Lea, 83, of Beech Mountain, formerly of Danville, passed away January 22, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Johanna K. Lea of Beech Mountain.; one daughter, Jennifer Lea Coleman, of Dry Fork; and two grandsons, Clark Lea Swann and Jacob Jackson Swann, both of Dry Fork.

A private Memorial Service will be held on Beech Mountain at a later date.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Beech Mt., NC 28604.

Albert Melvin Lester Jr.

KEELING, Va. - Albert Melvin Lester Jr., 66, of 1301 Birch Creek Road, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003 in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for 4 months.

Born Sept. 27, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Albert Melvin Lester Sr., deceased, and Rose Dodson Lester.

Mr. Lester had spent his entire life in the Keeling Community. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Prior to his decline in health, Mr. Lester was employed by Star Paper Tube Company.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

He married Annie Mae Simmons Lester on June 25, 1955.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, and his mother, of Keeling, he is survived by one son Peyton Lester and his wife Tori of Keeling; and one grandson, Taylor Blaze Lester, also of Keeling.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence.

Gladys Newbern Mays

DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Newbern Mays, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 21, 1910, in Way Cross, Ga., she was the daughter of John Robert Newbern and Fannie Elizabeth Moore Newbern, who predeceased her.

She was married to Charles Perkins Mays, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Ellen Mays Brumfield of Chatham, Fannie Mays Ragsdale of Blairs, Sarah Mays Farson of Vernon Hill and Dale Mays Farmer of Keeling; three sons, Carl P. Mays of Blairs, Harvey M. Mays of Moneta and Jackie N. Mays of Forest; one sister, Minnie Spires of Augusta, S.C.; 29 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three daughters, Betty Mays Yeatts, Virginia F. Mays and Joyce Mays East; two sons, Charles W. Mays and Ted P. Mays; one brother, Harvey Newbern; three sisters, Johnnie Morgan, Dessie Powell and Charlotte Varner; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Kyle A. Flora and the Rev. Russell East III officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter, Ellen M. Brumfield.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riceville Java Vol. Fire Department, or the 640 Rescue Squad, 1604 Riceville Road, Java, VA.

Edward S. Parrish

DANVILLE, Va. - Edward S. Parrish, 83, of 113 Longview Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at his residence after six years of declining health.

Born Sept. 1, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Phillip Thomas Parrish and Judy Elizabeth Shelton Parrish.

He lived most of his life in Danville. He was retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company, where he worked as a sheet metal fabricator. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Military Police, having served during World War II. He was of the Holiness faith.

He married Frances C. Parrish on Jan. 26, 1952.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Phillip Edward Parrish of the residence and a brother, Archer N. Parrish of Dry Fork.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Herman P. Parrish, Joe Parrish, Hugh Parrish, Irving Parrish, Percy T. Parrish and Willie Parrish and a sister, Mary Lou Parrish Owen.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Coates and the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
