David Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - David Ray Scearce, 62, of 2365 Vandola Road, died Sunday afternoon, April 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Mr. Scearce was a native of Danville, born Nov. 14, 1936. He was the son of the late Ray W. Scearce and Ocie Plaster Scearce.

Most of his life was spent in Danville and the Vandola community.

He married Gaynell Gamon Scearce on June 14, 1957.

He operated New Dominion Mobile Homes and later operated Dave's Place, on West Main Street, until his retirement.

Mr. Scearce was a member of the Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as a deacon.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are two daughters, Melody C. Scearce of the home, Melissa S. Bray and her husband, Tex Bray of Danville; one son, Joey R. Scearce and his fiancee, Laurie Ann Dillion of Danville; one brother, Clyde G. Scearce of Danville; one sister, Liz S. Moss of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Gaynell S. Pollard; and four brothers, Harry Scearce, Troy Scearce, Roy Scearce and Bud Scearce.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ray Humphies, the Rev. Myron Bruce and the Rev. Cecil Coates officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Lillie Shelton

DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Pruitt Shelton, of 29 Carlson Ave., died Saturday night, April 17, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

A native of Franklin County, she was the daughter of William Thomas Pruitt and Frances Ann Adkins Pruitt.

She was married to Curtis David Shelton, who predeceased her on April 6, 1999.

Most of her life was spent in Danville where she was employed by Danville Regional Medical Center as an operating room instrument technician.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member of the church choir.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty S. Travis and Gail Scearce Ragsdale, both of Danville; one half-brother, Bill Powell of Chatham; six grandsons; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and six step-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, her twin, Willie Pruitt and Jim Pruitt; one sister, Mattie Anderson; one half-sister, Estelle Gentry; and two half-brothers, James Powell and Phillip Powell.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating.

Burial will be in Liberty Christian Church cemetery, Sandy Level.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Gail Scearce Ragsdale, 121 Colonial Place, Swain Acres.

Beatrice White

KEELING, Va. - Beatrice Milam White, 80, of 697 Richardson Lane, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at her residence.

Born Dec. 18, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Edward Hall and Carrie Chaney Hall.

She was a homemaker.

She was married to Woodrow W. Milam Sr. and then to Edward E. White, both of whom predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Audrey F. Milam.

Survivors include three sons, Woodrow W. Milam Jr. of South Boston, James K. Milam of Keeling, and Joe C. Milam of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Wilson Hall of Roxboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

William "Bobby" Cifers

DANVILLE, Va. - William Robert "Bobby" Cifers, 53, of 625 Parker Road, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after 18 months of declining health. He had been in the hospital since Saturday.

Born Aug. 28, 1945, in Oxford, N.C., he was the son of the late William Robert Cifers Jr., and Carrie Ratliff Cifers, who survives.

He was married Nov. 30, 1980, to Jan Bolden Cifers, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Danville area where he was the owner and operator of Cifers Auto Repair on Industrial Avenue. He was of the Methodist faith and attended Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Angela C. Cifers Anderson of South Boston, and Crystal Gayle Cifers of the residence, and Shona Johnson of Reidsville, N.C.; one brother, James H. Cifers of Danville; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Barbara Edmunds

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Wright Edmunds, 64, of 147 Pineview Drive, died April 19, 1999 at her residence. She had been in declining health for three months.

Born Jan. 5, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of D. Harry "Doc" Wright and Gladys Pyron Wright.

On May 14, 1955, she was married to George C. Edmunds, who survives.

She had lived her entire life in Danville and was a member of New Life Community Church.

She was predeceased by one brother, Herman L. Wright.

In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include two sons, Stephen K. Edmunds and Ronald C. Edmunds, both of Danville; two sisters, Juanita Dabbs of Danville and Sandra Schneidor of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one brother, Herman L. Wright.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Steve Smith. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Louise Joslin

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Brockwell Joslin, 93, formerly of Dogwood Drive, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Riverside Healthcare Center.

She was born in Raleigh, N.C., the daughter of the late Mildred Bagwell and Sherwood Battle Brockwell.

She graduated from Meredith College in 1927, and continued her studies at Columbia University and later at the University of Virginia. In 1947, she moved to Danville where she taught history, English and music at various regional schools. She was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations in Danville, including the Music Study Club, of which she was president, the Wednesday Club, of which she was program chairman, and the Wayside Garden Club. She attended Epiphany Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband, Asher Langdon Joslin; her daughter, Mary Louise Joslin Sexton who is known by her professional name, Emyl Jenkins; a grandson, Langdon Jenkins of Altanta, Ga., and a granddaughter, Joslin Jenkins Hultazapple of Richmond.

A graveside service will be held in historic Oakwood cemetery in Raleigh on Wednesday, April 21. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Robert Sexton, 416 Maple Lane, from 7-9 p.m. today.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gary Schnipke

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Gary Lee Schnipke, 45, of 2701 Fernwick Drive, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 26, 1953, in Lima, Ohio, he was the son of Urban Schnipke and Betty Schnipke, both of whom survive.

He was married to Wanda Kay Halfhill Schnipke, who survives.

He was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Chamber of Commerce, was treasurer of the Comet Swim Team and was active in the Literacy Program.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include one son, Dustin Schnipke of South Boston; one daughter, Tiffany Schnipke of South Boston; three sisters, Kathy Gardner of Michigan, Karen Rieman of Ohio and Connie Schnipke of Cloverdale, Ohio; four brothers, David Schnipke of Delphos, Ohio, Randy Schnipke and Denny Schnipke, both of Otterville, Ohio and Dalyn Schnipke of Dixon, Ohio.

A Mass will be held 6 p.m. today at St. Paschal Catholic Church with Father Mathias Newell officiating. Burial will be held later in Tiffin, Ohio.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Wilmouth

RICHMOND, Va. - Helen Simpson Wilmouth, 76, departed this life Friday, April 16, 1999.

She is the widow of Charles H. Wilmouth, formerly of Danville, and was born in Yanceyville, N.C.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mickey and Debbie Wilmouth; one grandson, Chad; one sister, Etna Burton of Danville and many special relatives in the Danville and Yanceyville area.

An interment service was held Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Richmond.

Bliley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

L. Lawson Edwards

GRETNA, Va. - L. Lawson Edwards, 85, of 10720 East Gretna Road, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at his residence.

Born Oct. 28, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George W. Edwards and Seline Layne Edwards.

He was married to Mildred Hutcherson Edwards, who survives.

He was a lifelong farmer and a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he was held as a prisoner of war.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Roger Edwards of the residence and Jimmy Edwards of Gretna; two daughters, Brenda Walton of Richmond and Connie Edwards of Crotez; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Janie Hankins, Ludie Robertson and Lena Wyatt; and one brother, Bennett Edwards.

A funeral will be held 4:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Wilborn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4165 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
