Mildred Giacobine

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. - Mildred Mize Wennersten Giacobine, 80, died May 8, 1999, at Mariner Health Care after years of declining health.

Born Sept. 14, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she spent her early years in the Schoolfield area of Danville.

She moved to Pittsburgh in 1936, where, after working many years for Wolverine toy manufacturers, she became a nursing assistant at Ohio Valley Hospital. That was her career until she became ill.

She was predeceased by both parents, Essie Blair Mize Hylton and Talmadge George Mize, and her brother, Raymond George Mize.

Survivors include one son, Dr. John R "Jack" Wennersten, and a daughter-inlaw, Ruth E. Wennersten, both of 503 Riverview Ave., Salisbury, Md.; two grandsons, Stuart M. Wennersten of California and Matthew R. Wennersten of Washington, D.C.; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie K. Mize, of Mount Cross Road, Danville.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 15th, in Coraopolis.

Cremains will be returned to Danville and laid to rest in Highland Burial Park.

Barbara Hines

RINGGOLD, Va. - Barbara Jean Hines, 63, of 208 Neal Davis Road, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for six years.

Born Feb. 29, 1936, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin Eanes and Fannie Hancock Eanes.

She was married in September of 1962 to B.J. Hines, who survives.

She lived most of her life in Danville and had been a Ringgold resident for 10 years. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Terie L. Dove of the residence; two sons, Ronald K. Wilmoth of Houston, Texas, and Robert F. Wilmoth of Danville; one brother, John F. Eanes Jr. of Danville; one sister, Frances E. Walker of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Tony Wilmoth.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence and the residence of mother-in-law, Edith Hines, 224 Haymore St., Danville.

Thelma Waller

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Thelma Gladys Boyd Waller, 65, of 1560 Hubbard Drive, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born July 3, 1933, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Junior Will Pannell and Lucy Ann Davis Pannell.

She was married to Alberlie Waller, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Second Buffalo Baptist Church, Nathalie.

Survivors include seven daughters, Ann Poindexter, Long Island, Lucy Mae Davis, Gladys Herndon, Reva Monroe and Hattie Waller, all of Nathalie, Stella Waller of Red House and Clara Smith of Roxboro, N.C.; three sons, Alberlie Waller Jr. of Durham, N.C., Michael Waller of South Boston and Roscoe Waller of Nathalie; three sisters, Surilla Miller of Nathalie, Lucille Anderson of Clover and Betty Tucker of Gretna; and three brothers, Eugene Pannell of Red House, Hurlie Davis and Joe Lewis Davis, both of Nathalie; 27 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Second Buffalo Baptist church with the Rev. W.M. Yancey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Whipple III

GRETNA, Va. - Master Kenneth Wipple III, 121 Northside Drive, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

He was the infant son of Kenneth Whipple Jr. and Anella Anderson Whipple.

In addition to his parents of Gretna, survivors include one sister, Desiree A. Whipple of the residence; paternal grandparents, Kenneth Whipple Sr. and Betty Whipple of Danville; and his maternal grandfather, Robert Hughes of Java.

He was predeceased by a brother, Devonte Whipple, and his maternal grandmother, Frances Anderson.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Elba cemetery in Gretna with the Rev. B.J. Baize officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Gracie Barnes

DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Shaw Barnes, 86, died Monday morning, May 24, 1999, at the residence of her daughter, Pattie B. Turner, 203 Brentwood Drive after six months of declining health.

Born June 4, 1912, in Pageton, W.Va., she was the daughter of Albert Shaw and Ellen Taylor Shaw.

She was married to Lonnie Lee Barnes, who predeceased her Dec. 10, 1998.

She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Riveroak Church of God. She was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Kenneth Barnes of Mt. Clinton and Emery Barnes of Martinsville; three daughters, Pattie B. Turner, Lois Tuck Warren and Jeanne B. Compton, all of Danville; one sister Stella Gillispie of Alexandria; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Riveroak Church of God with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Jackie Poe and the Rev. Ray Wiggs officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church and at other times at the residence of her daughter.

Clyde "Tommy" Brooks

DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde "Tommy" Wesley Brooks Jr., 53, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Clyde W. Brooks Sr. who survives and the late Christine Rowland Brooks.

He was a retiree of Dan River Inc. and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father of Chatham, survivors include five brothers, Mike Brooks, Ricky Brooks, Tim Brooks and Jeff Brooks, all of Chatham and Danny Brooks of Gretna; two sisters, Linda Mayhew of Chatham and Lisa Brooks of Gretna.

He was predeceased by two brothers James Brooks and Larry Wayne Brooks.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Bullock officiating. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother Danny Brooks, 345 Brushy Mountain Road, Gretna.

James Hairston

DANVILLE, Va. - James Timothy Hairston, 70, of 2217 Oak Hill Road, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Timothy Hairston and Sallie Adams Hairston.

He was married to Annie Williams Hairston, who survive.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at American Furniture Company in Martinsville. He was a member of the Assembly Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Cascade.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary E. Wade of Martinsville; one sister, Bessie Hairston of Cascade; two brothers, Elder Robert Hairston of Cascade and Ernest Hairston of New Jersey.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Assembly Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Cascade with Elder Andrew Adams officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Herman Hamlett Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Herman W. Hamlett Sr., 81, of 335 Wendell Scott Drive, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 30, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of Jackson Hamlett and Kate Evans Hamlett.

He was married to Nannie W. Hamlett, who survives.

He was a maintenance technician for Dan River Inc. He was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and a member of the deacon board, Metoka Class, past Sunday School Treasurer, Financial Committee, BTU, and the Murdock Masonic Lodge #163.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Curtis W. Hamlett of Binghamton, N.Y., Herman W. Hamlett Jr. of the residence and Preston D. Hamlett of Danville; two daughters, Barbara H. Brown of Somerset, N.J., and Jacqueline H. Briscoe of Oxon Hill, Md.; one sister, Shirley Hicks of Plainfield, N.J.;nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle A. Maxwell Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with Masonic rites to follow.

A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mavis James

CHEVERLY, Md. - Missionary Mentre Mavis Lester James departed this life Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the Prince George's Community Hospital in Cheverly Maryland. Born in Roxboro, N.C., April 13, 1916, to the late Arthur C. and Lillian Powell Lester.

Mentre James was the eldest of four siblings, Laus Deo Lester (deceased), Lois Lester Smith (deceased) and Viola Lester of Landover, Md. She graduated from John M. Langston High School in Danville, Va.

In 1939, she was united in Holy matrimony to the late Nathaniel Thomas James, from this union two children were born.

Missionary James was employed as a food service manager in Danville's public school system for over 25 years. She was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Danville, since her early childhood. In the year of 1989, Missionary James relocated to the state of Maryland and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Highland Park of Landover Md. until her health declined. She also attended the Almost Family Adult Care Center of Landham, Md.

She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Tyrone and Rosalind T. James; two grand-daughters, Brenda Leigh James whom she raised and who devoted her love and care for her grandmother, Ryan Cassaundra Jordan; one grandson Douglas A. James, one sister Viola Lester Curvington and one nephew Fred A. Curvington.

The family wishes to extend great appreciation to friends, neighbors, The Veterans Administration Medical Center, Bell Atlantic, Almost Family, Mariners Health Association for the compassion and courtesy shown during this long farewell. To God Be The Glory for the life of our dear mother Mentre Mavis Lester James.

Family will receive friends from 10a.m.-11:00 a.m., the time of the funeral service, on Wednesday, May 26, at the Spirit of Faith Christian Center, 2261 Oxon Run Drive, Temple Hills, Md., Elder Rick Wooten, officiating. Interment icon will be in Harmony Memorial Park.
