Willie Stegall

DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Ben Stegall, 89, formerly of Route 9, Westover Drive, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after five years of declining health.

Born July 17, 1909, in Martinsville, he was the son of Thomas Stegall and Martha Taylor Stegall.

He lived most of his life in the Danville area, and worked in the maintenance department at Dan River Inc. for a number of years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Virginia Frances Stegall, who predeceased Aug. 7, 1994.

Survivors include a son, Willie Stegall of Appomattox; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stegall Family cemetery, Irisburg with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Thompson

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Mattox Thompson, 80, of 210 Rosemary Lane, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, after a one-week stay at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 2, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Harry Mattox and Fannie Compton Mattox.

She was married in 1947 to Roy Hammond Thompson, who survives.

She attended Radford and Stratford colleges and had spent most of her life in the Danville area. She was a retired school teacher, teaching in the Pittsylvania County and Danville school systems. She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and the DAV Auxilliary where she ws a past officer.

She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Mattox Jr.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Helen Talbott of Danville and Patsy Bolling of Gretna.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Ascension Lutheran Church with the Rev. Caldwell Day officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Watkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy M. Watkins, 70, of 631 Edmonds St., Apt. 4, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1929, in Plainsboro, N. J., she was the daughter of Roosevelt Watkins and Mary W. Watkins.

She was a domestic worker and a member of North New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Harry Watkins of Danville; and one sister, Evelyn Watkins of Great Neck, N.Y.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at North New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. W.D. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Crooktown cemetery.

A viewing will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 115 Beavers Mill Road.

Ada Watts

DANVILLE, Va. - Ada N. Watts, 97, formerly of 135 Howeland Circle, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Stratford Health Center.

Born Nov. 19, 1901, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Pencie Nolen and Charles Nolen.

She was married over 60 years to Owen Watts, who predeceased April 12, 1998.

She owner/operator her own beauty shop for many years. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Danville.

Survivors include three sisters, Beulah Vaughn and Lottie Pickral, both of Danville, and Pauline Thompson of Prospect Hill, N.C.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Belva Ferguson

DANVILLE, Va. - Belva Willis Ferguson, 92, of 21 Oak Ridge Ave., died Saturday night, July 3, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 9, 1906, in Gretna, she was the daughter of Coleman D. Willis and Alice Rowland Willis.

She spent most of her life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc. until her retirement in 1971.

She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

She was married to Charlie Cedrick Ferguson, who predeceased her May 1, 1934.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sons, Clyde Fuller Ferguson, Charlie Cedrick Ferguson Jr. and Clarence Langston Ferguson; four brothers, Darrell Willis, Earl Willis, Charlie Willis and Wyatt Willis; and two sisters, Mattie I. Pruitt and Irene W. Taylor.

Survivors include one daughter, Hazel F. Hollie of the residence; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Elder Julian Williams and the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home 7:30-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.

Roy Horne Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Roy Franklin Horne Sr., 74, of 5 London Drive, died Monday morning July 5, 1999 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem, Va.

Mr. Horne was born in Danielsville, Ga., on August 4, 1924, a son of the late Ben Horne and Blondine Horne.

He was married to Billie C. Horne, who survives.

Mr. Horne was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He had made his home in Danville since 1953 where he was a supervisor for Dan River Inc., and was owner and operator of Edgewood Exxon service station until retirement.

He was of the Holiness faith.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Roy Franklin Horne Jr. of Pittsylvania County; two brothers, James Horne of Georgia and Bobby Horne of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Lucy Coile, Jennie Christian, Carol Smith and Jackie Roberts, all of Georgia; two granddaughters, Antonia Gregory and Angela Milam, both of Pittsylvania County; two great-grandsons, Tristan Gregory and Corey T. Milam, both of Pittsylvania County; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Gregory of Pittsylvania County.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens were military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the residence of his son, Franky, at 2312 Miller Road off Mountain Hill Road.

Wife, Billie Horne

Frances McGuire

DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Smith McGuire, 89, of 18 Dula St., died Monday, July 5, 1999 at her residence after a decline in health for the past two years.

Born in Washington County, Va., July 20, 1909, she was the daughter of James Smith and Nancy Elizabeth McGuire Smith. She was a member of the Gethsemane Wesleyan Church on Dula St.

She was married to Claiborne W. McGuire who predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1997.

She had lived most of her life in Danville, and worked in the Spinning Room at Dan River Mills for 45 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Joan King of Danville; 10 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a son, Claude Junior McGuire, who died Nov. of 1996.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Paul Ray and Rev. Morris Adkins officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Petty

EVINGTON, Va. - John Edward Petty, Professor of Education and Human Development Emeritus, of Evington, died Sunday evening, July 4, 1999, at his home.

He is the beloved husband of Margaret Bottoms Petty.

He was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. Sept. 27, 1931. He was the son of the late Frank Bradney Petty and Stella Oakes Petty.

His brother, Rev. Frank B. Petty, Jr., predeceased him. He retired after thirty years of service at Lynchburg College.

During that time he was Chair of the Department of Education, Dean of Graduate Studies, Professor of Education, Director of Continuing Education, Director of Educational Institutes, Coordinator of ROTC, Director of Elderhostel Programs, the Founding Director of Gerontology (later the Belle Boone Beard Gerontology Center), and Director of ACCESS.

He was also a charter member of the Lynchburg Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa where he served as President and Advisor. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 and a PDK scholarship was established in his name.

He was a member and counselor for Kappa Delta Pi and received the Inaugural International Counselor Award. He was also a retired Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army Reserve.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Petty is survived by his son, John E. Petty Jr. and his wife, Dannette, of Evington; his daughters, Jane G. Petty of Atlanta, Ga. and Barret B. Stump and her husband, Chuck, of Troy; four grandchildren, Johanno Petty, Kristin Petty, Cody McCulloch, and Jackson Stump; his brother, Dr. Carroll T. Petty and his wife Linette, of Richmond; his sister, Beth Brown Geho, of Chatham; a sister-in-law Dorothy B. Petty of Lynchburg; his mother-in-law, June L. Bottoms of Madison Heights; a sister-in-law, Mary B. Hill of Buchanan; a brother-in-law, John Daniel Bottoms and his wife, Vicki, of Amherst; and many nieces, nephews, loved relatives, and special friends William M. Bennett and Bob D. Samara.

A celebration of his life will be held at Snidow Chapel at Lynchburg college at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with a reception following in the Hall Campus Center until 6 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the John Edward Petty Outstanding Graduate Alumni Award, Lynchburg College, 1501 Lakeside Drive, Lynchburg, Va., 24501-3199.

Lewis Jackson "Jack" Wright Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lewis Jackson "Jack" Wright Jr., 65, of 3390 Westover Drive, died Monday morning, July 5, 1999, at his residence.

Born Feb. 22, 1934, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Lewis Jackson Wright Sr. and Bessie Nichols Wright.

He was married on July 25, 1959, in Wes Point, N.Y., to Beeda Louise Taylor Wright, who survives.

He lived his life in Moneta, Va. before moving to Danville in 1962.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a bus driver for Trailways and then Greyhound for 38 years before retiring in 1995. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Morgan Baptist Church in Moneta.

He was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post No. 325 and the Sertoma Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Terri Wright Petrelle and her husband, Joe Petrelle, of Walkersville, Md.; a son, Lewis Jackson "Buddy" Wright III and his wife, Jeannie Jones Wright of Danville; two sisters, Irene Cheek of Moneta and Doris Cutchin of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren, Lindsey, David and Connor Petrelle of Walkersville, Md.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruby Clark and Virginia Krupski.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel. Services will be conducted by the Rev. William Blalock and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. A graveside service will immediately follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the American Legion Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 West Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Leary Berger

HURT, Va. - Leary Berger, 86, of Mitchell Trailer Court, Lot 8, died Sunday morning, July 18, 1999, at Stratford Health Care.

Born Nov. 26, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Carl Gregory and Hattie Berger Gregory.

She was married to Orlanda Berger, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of Burning Bush Holiness Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Hettie Smith of Hurt, Elizabeth Smith of Milton, N.C. and Lucille Hamett of Burlington, N.C.; two sons, Jerome Berger and James Berger, both of Chatham; one sister, Inova Vest of Altavista; 27 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three daughters, Madeline Wilson, Deloris Robertson and Armentha Valentine; and two brothers, Collie Gregory and Stanley Gregory.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Burning Bush Holiness Church with the Elder Garry Witcher and the Elder Louis Berger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.
