Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

George Brown

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - George Washington Brown, 72, of Prospect Hill Drive, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

Born Feb. 22, 1927, in Halifax County, he was the son of Robert Estes Brown and Laura Crews Brown.

He was married to Betty Davey Brown, who survives.

Upon graduation from Volens High School, he served two years in the United States Army in Italy during World War II. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. Upon graduation he worked with the city of Martinsville as assistant city engineer. He later became city engineer, director of water and street division, director of public works, assistant city manager, and then Martinsville city manager, where he retired in 1991, after 40 years of service. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville where he served as teacher of a men's Bible class, deacon, usher, and on other various committees.

He was a longtime member of Martinsville Kiwanis Club where he recently served on the Board of Directors.

He was chairman of the service corps of retired executives and served on the West Piedmont District Planning Commission. After retirement from city of Martinsville, he served as consultant to other localities in city administration.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Carol Harding of Madison Heights; one son, George Michael Brown of Alpharetta, Ga.; one sister, Dorothy Jennings of Nathalie; one brother, Maynard Lee Brown of Halifax; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Brown and four brothers, Ester Brown, Merritt Brown, Melvin Brown and Robert Samuel Brown.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Dr. Thomas McCann and the Rev. Stanton McDaniel officiating. Interment icon will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends today at 7-8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Martinsville.

McKee-Stone Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Coates

HALIFAX, Va. - Ronald Carter Coates, 64, of 1061 Avondale Drive, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at his home.

Born Sept. 4, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter H. Coates and Mae Tuck Coates.

He was married to Faye Martin Coates, who survive.

He was a member of the Liberty United Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two sons, Ronald C. Coates Jr. of South Boston and Walter R. Coates of Cluster Springs; one brother, Rupert C. Coates of Halifax; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister Audrey C. Walden; and one brother John T. Coates.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dwight Moore and the Rev. John W. Wilder officiating. Burial will be in churh cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Vester Hopkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Vester Lee Davis Hopkins, 88, formerly of 160 Parkway Drive, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at Riverside Health Care after being a resident since December 1997.

Born June 23, 1911, in Gretna, she was the daughter of William Riley Davis and Grace Hedrick Davis.

She was married to Aaron E. Hopkins, who predeceased her Dec. 5, 1980.

She lived her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County, and prior to her retirement was employed by Dan River Inc. She was a member of Westover Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, William A. "Bill" Hopkins of Danville; two sisters, Maggie Deboe and Elsie King, both of Danville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Leroy Clack officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her son, William A. Hopkins, 605 Mowbray Arch, Danville.

Ruby Lowe

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Gunnell Lowe, 66, of 505 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at her residence.

Born August 21, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. Gunnell and Verna Mae Anderson.

She was married to Larry F. Lowe, who predeceased her.

She lived her entire life in the Danville area where she was a real estate agent and office manager at Eastern Panel Corp. until retirement. She was a charter member of Christian Heritage Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris L. Henderson and Vandora Holt, both of Danville; and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Dr. James Gardner officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mildred Oakes

DRY FORK, VA. - Mildred L. Oakes, age 70, of 1241 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, Virginia died Monday, August 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter Vicky Miller.

Mrs. Oakes was born June 7, 1929, in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Dollie C. and Havanna Lewis. She was married to Ryland S. Oakes, Jr., who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and worker for Dewberry's Restaurant for a number of years. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicky Miller and son-in-law, R.E. of the residence, daughter Joan Yeatts and son-in-law, James of Blairs; daughter Brenda Yancey and son-in-law, Harold of Madison Heights, Va.; son Kenneth Oakes and daughter-in-law Andrea of Staunton, Va.; son Darrell Oakes and daughter-in-law Julie of Chatham; and son Harold Oakes and daughter-in-law Roxanne of Dry Fork. Also surviving are three sisters, Ruby Cundiff nd Viedell Crane, both of Dry Fork, and Edna Sheldon of Chatham; one brother, Jerry C. Lewis of Danville, and a very special friend Josephine Adams of Roxboro, N.C., fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, August 12, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. from the Oakland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Steve Lewis, Rev. R. Flecther Hardy, III, and Rev. James Albert. Interment icon will be in the Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery in Dry Fork, Va.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Setliff

DANVILLE, Va. - Harold O. Setliff, 73, of 132 Gloucester Ave., died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center where he spent the past five days, after several years of declining health.

Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of George W. Setliff and Lois Ferguson Setliff.

He was married July 5, 1963, to Margaret Gray Setliff, who survives.

He served in the United States Navy as an Airman during World War II, on the United States Ship Saipan where he was a Fire Marshall. He received the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Star, the Phillipine Liberation Star and the Good Conduct Medal.

He lived all of his life in Danville where he retired from the Danville Police Department where he worked as a Parking Meter Technician. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 647, as well as a member of the American Legion Post No. 1097.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Jack W. Setliff and Kenneth Setliff.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Maddie Stone

DANVILLE, Va. - Maddie Ann Stone, 60, of 450 Henry St., Apt. 4, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at her residence.

Born April 24, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Amos Stone Sr. and Ruth Carter Stone.

Survivors include one stepmother, Rosabelle Stone; one daughter, Georgia Haley of Danville; seven brothers Thomas Stone, Amos Stone Jr., Albert Stone, Joe Stone, Niles Stone, Clarence Stone and Willie Henry Stone; nine sisters, Mary Stone, Shirley Watson, Rosa Stone, Isabelle Carter, Mabel Reynolds, Linda Jennings, Betty Hodnett, Henrietta Stone and Maryilyn Stone.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J.P. Griffith, Jr. officiating.

A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 248 Ross St.

Rodessa Via

DANVILLE, Va. - Rodessa H. Via, 69, of 1065 Oak Hill Road, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at her residence.

Born Feb. 15, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse J. Hairston and Carrie Millner Hairston.

She was married to Hampton Via, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Ruby H. Waller of Axton; two brothers, Levi Hairston of Danville and Jesse Clyde Hairston of Washington.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. John Tinsley officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Joe Wyatt

DANVILLE, Va. - Joe Henry Wyatt, 85, of 2981 Twin Arch Drive, died Tuesday afternoon, August 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 19, 1914, in Stella, Va., he was the son of James Henry Wyatt and Mattie Sue Arnold Wyatt.

He was married to Helen Aherron Wyatt, who survives.

He spent most of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County area. He was a tractor mechanic working for Collie Equipment Company for many years, and was a member of Community Baptist Church on Iris Lane.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Doris Wyatt Austin of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sons, Bobby Joe Wyatt of Alexandria and Herman David Wyatt of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Annie Mae Martin and Nancy Wyatt Hawker, both of Keeling; two brothers, Sam Wyatt of Pelham, N.C. and William E. Wyatt of West Branch, Mich.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Albert and Rev. Carlton Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Irene Bennett

DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Fitzgerald Bennett, 78, of 6632 Old Richmond Road, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.

Born June 15, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of Hester Fitzgerald and Cornelia Stone Fitzgerald.

She was married to Lewis H. Bennett, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Guildfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Lizzie Motley and Agnes King, both of Danville, Shirley Thompson of Washington, Verna Samuel of Fort Washington, Md., and Betty Garland of Blanche, N.C.; three sons, Lewis Bennett Jr. of Danville, Willie Bennett of Martinsville and Jesse Bennett of Washington; seven sisters, Luberta Carter, Dorothy Thomas, Beatrice Thomas and Lillie Kirby, all of Danville, Rosa Medley and Martha Scates, both of Chatham, and Geneva Echols of Dry Fork; four brothers, William Fitzgerald, James Fitzgerald and Jesse Fitzgerald, all of Danville, and John Fitzgerald of Chatham; 24 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Lee Smiley Davis, 94, of 117 Motley Ave., died Sunday, August. 8, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.

Born April 3, 1905, in Mecklenburg County, Va., she was the daughter of Charles Pennington and Victoria Holmes Smiley.

She was married to Dewey Lee Davis, who predeceased her in 1975.

She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.

She was a homemaker, but briefly worked for Andersons Brother's Uniform Manufacturer as a sewer.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence D. Davis of Providence, N.C. and Calvin L. Davis of Newport News; two daughters, Arlene D. Nicholson of Santa Maria, Calif. and Grace D. Roberts of Kaysville, Utah; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 1794 Gammon Road, Providence, N.C.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
