Minion Booth

DANVILLE, Va. - Minion Willard Booth, 84, of 1A Booth Road, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at Annie Penn Hospital, after four years of declining health.

Born April 6, 1915 in South Boston, he was the son of Alley Willard Booth and Cora Robertson Rush.

He was also the stepson of Issac Duff Rush.

He was married to Elizabeth Sigmon Booth.

He served in the United States Air Force as a Military Police officer during World War II. He spent most of his life in Reidsville, N.C., and Danville, retiring from American Tobacco Company in Reidsville, N.C.

He was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Curtis L. Booth of Reidsville, N.C., and Willard "Ricky" L. Booth of Danville; two sisters, Doris Travis and Elsie Hyler, both of Danville; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Earl Rush and Claude Rush; and four sisters, Pearl McGee, Thelma Travis, Violet Surratt and Ola Booth.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Austin and the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel and at other times at the residence.

Luther Bourne

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Luther Lee Bourne, 75, of 7183 McDonald Road, died August 19, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 7, 1923, in Stony Fork, he was the son of Robert L. Bourne and Gracie Brinkley Bourne.

He was married to Dorothy Jackson Bourne, who survives.

He was a member of Fork Baptist Church, where he was Sunday school teacher, deacon and on the board of trustees.

In addition to his wife of Scottsburg, survivors include one son, Robert Lee Bourne of Scottsburg; three brothers, Robert L. Bourne of Max Meadows, Raymond Bourne and Danny Bourne, both of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Pauline Ingoe and Mary Lawrence, both of Wytheville, and Ruth Childress of Roanoke; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be 7 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A funeral will also be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Fries.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Fannie Castle

CHATHAM, Va. - Fannie Wann Castle, 85, of 3949 Banister Road, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room after 14 years of declining health.

Born Feb. 16, 1914, in Washington County near Abingdon, she was the daughter of Joseph Lane Wann and Betty Arnold Wann.

She was married June 8, 1929, to Robert Wade Castle, who predeceased her Nov. 24, 1997.

She made her home in the Chatham area since 1985.

She previously worked for Dan River Inc. as a spinner for 16 years before going to work at Royal Cotton Mill in Wake Forest, N.C., where she worked for 10 years.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris Castle Flinchum of Dry Fork, and Deloris Castle Marshall of Youngsville, N.C.; one son, Douglas F. Castle of Chatham; one sister, Ellen Nelson of Danville; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Nancy Castle Stillwell in 1994, and one grandchild who died in 1998.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks and the Rev. Charlie Cundiff officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Hazel Dalton

DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel Sizemore Dalton, 78, of 121 Orchard Drive, died Thursday, August 19, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after 13 years of declining health.

Born Jan. 18, 1921, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Carl A. Sizemore and Lelia Burnett Sizemore.

She resided in Danville for 60 years.

She was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years prior to retirement.

She attended The Tabernacle.

Survivors include three brothers, Bernice Sizemore of Danville, and Gilmer Sizemore and Homer Sizemore, both of Galax; and two sisters, Doris S. Martin and Ruby S. Wilson, of Galax.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. K.T. Carico officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel and at other times at 229 Hughes St., Danville.

Ercell Gilbert

DANVILLE, Va. - Carmon Ercell "Johnny" Gilbert, of Keeling, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999.

Born June 22, 1912, in Keeling, he was the son of Ramey Grayson Gilbert and Bessie White Gilbert.

He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Mays Gilbert.

Mr. Gilbert served in the United States Army 3344 Quartermaster Corp. Division 23, Trucking Company, during World War II, and prior to his retirement he had been employed in building construction. He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Clarice H. Gilbert.

He is survived by his stepdaugter, Peggy McDowell Guill and her husband, Thomas L. Guill of Keeling, his sister, Delma Gilbert Turpin and her husband, George P. Turpin Jr. of Lynchburg, a special friend and caretaker, Mrs. Virginia Cox, other friends and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 1999, 2 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Tom Erwin will be conducting the services. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Goggins

CHATHAM, Va. - John Goggins, 47, of 2496 North Flint Hill Road, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, in the University of Virginia Hospital at Charlottesville.

Born April 1, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Henry Goggins and Lena Jones Goggins.

He was employed as lineman for Pulaski Furniture Company in Martinsville, and he was a member of the New Life Apostolic Church of Chatham.

In addition to his mother of Chatham, survivors include four brothers, Jerry L. Goggins of Chatham, Benjamin Goggins of Gainsville, Robert L. Goggins of Martinsville, and Steve D. Goggins of Texas; and one sister, Janice G. Moore of Chatham.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the New Life Apostolic Church with Elder Charlie Witcher officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Claude Graham

DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Claude Raymond Graham, 80, formerly of 158 Old Greensboro Road, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where he resided for three years.

Born May 16, 1919, in Roanoke County, he was the son of Elbert William Graham and Telitha Fralin Graham.

He was married Sept. 12, 1946, to Dorothy Earles Graham, who predeceased him.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy Air Force, having served during World War II.

He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a watchmaker before entering the ministry.

He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1955 and was a former board member of Dan River Baptist Association.

He also served as administrative assistant at Patrick Henry Boys Home at Brookneal.

He served in the ministry for 45 years, having last pastored at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Halifax County and previously at Second Baptist Church in South Boston.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Kathleen Carter and Yevlee Mayhew, and one brother, Herman Graham.

Survivors include one sister, Eva Owen of Danville; and two brothers, Walter Graham of Suffolk, and Lewis Graham of Danville.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alden Hicks and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment icon will be in Oakwood cemetery, Martinsville.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his niece, Trudi Griffin, 189 Pineview Drive, Ringgold.

Cody Austin Hill

DANVILLE, Va. - Cody Austin Hill, infant, of 136 Cottonwood Lane, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was the son of Darin Andrew Hill and JoAnn Ricketts Hill, who survive.

In addition to his parents, survivors include one brother, Ryan Andrew Hill of the residence; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Judy Hill of Danville; and maternal grandparents, Danny and Nancye Ricketts of Danville.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Ricketts officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nella Martin

DANVILLE, Va. - Nella Gatewood Martin, 102, of 2526 N. Main St., died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home where she has lived since 1989.

She has been in declining health for four years.

Born Oct. 9, 1896, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Calvin Gatewood and Ella Margaret Coleman Gatewood.

She was married Nov. 7, 1925, to James Thurman Martin, who predeceased her.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She lived in Kenbridge before moving to Danville. She was a homemaker, and an active member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution and the United Daughter's of the Confederacy.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Martin Tingle of Johnson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Wright officiating.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
