Marqueshia Antwanette McCain

DANVILLE, Va. - Marqueshia Antwanette McCain, 8, of 331 Poplar Street, Apartment 3, Danville, Virginia, died September 25, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 9, 1994, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Totten and the late Vanessa E. McCain.

Marqueshia attended the Danville Public Schools.

Marqueshia is survived by her father, Charles Totten; one brother, Marcus McCain; her maternal grandmother, Catherine L. McCain; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Hattie Miller; five aunts, Patricia M. Kelly (Jimmy), Brenda McCain, Bobbie Jean McCain, Theresa McCain and Deborah Page; four uncles, Charles McCain (Laura), Elbert McCain (Pernessa), Michael Totten and Sergeant Tracy Totten; two great-aunts; two great-uncles; thirty-seven cousins; and twelve great-cousins.

Marqueshia was predeceased by her mother, Vanessa E. McCain, her great-grandparents, J.T. Totten and Lena Williamson, one aunt, Carolyn Martin and four cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Booker T. George will officiate. Interment will follow in the Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 331 Poplar Street, Apt. 3, Danville, Virginia.

Shirley Ann Harris Moore

DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley Ann Harris Moore, 60, of 265 Pineview Road, Lot 39, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health and two weeks and one day in the hospital.

Born April 21, 1942, in Newcastle, she was the daughter of Virginia Gertrude Damewood, who survives.

She lived most of her life in Roanoke and resided in Norcross, Ga., for 10 years before moving to Danville in 1989. She worked for Joe & Mimma's Italian Restaurant & Pizza as a waitress. She was a former employee of Sonny's Barbecue in Norcross, Ga. She was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She married Paul H. Moore Sr. on May 1, 1963.

In addition to her mother of Roanoke and her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son, Paul H. Moore Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Julie Lynn Bray of Pelham, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Troy B. Webb officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her son, Paul H. Moore Jr., 112 Mathew Circle.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 West Main St., Danville, VA 24541.

Douglas Lee Puckett

DANVILLE, Va. - Douglas Lee Puckett, 76, of 436 Gilbert Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born March 31, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Elwood Puckett and Ella Blanch Burgess Puckett.

He had worked for Corning Glass Inc. in the forming department. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and was a former member of American Legion Post 325. He was also a farmer in the Laurel Grove community.

He was married to Merle Edmunds Puckett on Feb. 4, 1948.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Douglas Wayne Puckett of Danville; a daughter, Sandra Lee Seation of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Clyde Abner Puckett of Ringgold and Henry Irvin Puckett of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Hazel P. Womack of Moseley; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Owsley and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and will at other times at the residence.

Eddie Green Royster

SEMORA, N.C. - Eddie Green Royster, 65, of 2515 Zion Level Church Road, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his residence.

Born Jan. 3, 1937, in Person County, he was the son of Emma and James Royster.

He attended the public schools of Person County and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sisters, Alice Cunningham of Semora and Lillie Bumpass of Washington, D.C.; six brothers, Johnnie Moses Royster of Chicago, Ill., Lonzy Royster, Roderick Royster and Joseph Royster, all of Philadelphia, Pa., and David Royster and Kelvin Royster, both of Semora; and one paternal brother, John Royster of Georgia.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. P.D. Medley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Saturday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

Linda Clay Burton

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Linda Clay Burton, 44, of 1204 North 28th St., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at St. Johns Hospital after three months of declining health.

Born Dec. 16, 1957, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Charlie H. Clay and Dora Wyatt Clay.

She lived most of her life in Danville and had resided in Oklahoma for the past 10 years. She was a member of RHEMA Bible Church and was employed at RHEMA Bible Institute.

She was married to John Glenn Burton, who predeceased her May 12, 2002.

She is survived by two daughters, Melissa Whitehead and Sandra Burton; a son, Joshua Burton, all of Broken Arrow; a brother, Charlie Clay; a sister, Edna Cundiff, both of Danville, Va. and two grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Carrington Clay.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Neal Isom and David Bivens officiating.

The family will be at the residence of Edna Cundiff, 2357 Moorefield Bridge Road, Danville, Va.

Ray Campbell

PELHAM, N.C. - James "Ray" Campbell, 70, of 2560 Law Road, died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at his residence.

Born June 21, 1932, in Madison Heights, Va., he was the son of William Edward Campbell and Bessie Mae Pence Campbell.

Mr. Campbell lived most of his life in Madison Heights before moving to Danville in 1980. He was retired from Westover Cartage where he worked in maintenance. He was a faithful member of Stokesland Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class.

He is survived by three sisters, Gladys C. Mayberry of Pelham, Dorothy C. Profitt of Madison Heights, Va. and Louise C. Womack of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother-in-law, Red Profitt of Madison Heights, Va.; two nephews, Jeff Mayberry and his wife, D'Atte and Jerry Mayberry and his wife, Mary, all of Danville, Va.; two nieces, Vicky Burnett and her husband, Phillip, both of Danville, Va. and Debra Shackelford and her husband, Tim, both of Pelham; four great-nieces, Sidney Shackelford, Savannah Mayberry, Brandi Burnett and Brittany Burnett, all of Danville, Va.; eight great-nephews, Phillip "Trey" Burnett, Jason Gammon, Joshua Gammon, Jonathan Mayberry, Jerry Mayberry Jr. and wife, Chrystal, Mike Mayberry, Scott Shackelford, all of Danville, Va. and Brian Shackelford of Raleigh. He is also survived by several other nieces and nephews in Madison Heights, Va.

He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Pittman officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Tuesday, October 8 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Stokesland Baptist Church and will at other times at the residence, 2560 Law Road.

Ray Wilson Cooke

DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Ray Wilson Cooke, 89, of North Main Street, Danville, Virginia, and formerly of Highway 21 in Hamptonville, passed away Monday, October 7, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, Va.

He was born July 2, 1913 in Yadkin County, N.C., to the late Richard Walter and Hattie Marshall Cooke.

Mr. Cooke was retired from the City of Danville Gas Department as an engineer. He was a member of West Yadkin Baptist Church in Hamptonville, Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #122, Scottish Rite of Danville, Va. and was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army in Aircraft Maintenance.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooke was preceded in death by his 3 sisters, Edythe Cooke Pardue, Gladys Ross, Annie Mae Tillison; and a brother, Norris Weldon Cooke. Surviving are his adopted son, Ryan Walter Cooke, Houston, Texas; his god child, Kathy T. Surgess, Seoul, South Korea; and his special caregivers, C.C. and Doris Henderson, Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 PM Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North of Yadkinville, NC.

A graveside service will follow at 1:30 PM Wednesday in West Yadkin Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Kenny Gooden.

James Luther Franklin

DANVILLE, Va. - James Luther Franklin, of 363 Summit Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at his residence after a decline in health.

Born April 1, 1920, in Danville, he was the son of Robert E. Franklin and Gracie Moorefield Franklin.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from the O'Boyle Tank Lines as a truck driver.

He was married to Helen Worley, who predeceased him March 16, 1995.

He is survived by a son, Michael James Franklin; a daughter, Lynda McDowell Beach, both of Danville; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Franklin and a grandson, Rusty Beach.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach with the Rev. Richard Baker officiating.

The family will receive friends at the daughter's residence, 226 Arnett Blvd.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or to Hospice Support Services, Inc., P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA 24541.

Bernice Reynolds Harper

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Reynolds Harper, 85, formerly of 600 Main St., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after residing there for three years. She had been in declining health for the past five years.

Born Jan. 25, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Bernie C. Reynolds and Lula Hagood Reynolds.

She had lived in Danville prior to moving to Baltimore, Md., where she lived for a number of years before returning to Danville in 1970. She was a member of the Salvation Army and was very active while she resided in Baltimore.

She was married to Edward F. Harper, who predeceased her Feb. 27, 1968.

She is survived by five nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Doug Bowden officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her friend, Dora Walton, 87 Bishop Avenue.

Edith Thurman Murphy

DANVILLE, Va. - Edith Thurman Murphy, 80, of 224 Courtland St., Apt. 145, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her residence after several years of declining health.

Born June 18, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of Grover Thurman and Mary Susan Cassidy Thurman.

She had lived her entire life in the Danville area. She was a member of St. Mark Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the choir. She was the last surviving member of her generation.

She was married to George L. Murphy, who predeceased her Sept. 7, 1987.

She is survived by a son, Leonard C. Murphy of Danville; three daughters, Becky M. Evans of Danville, Susan M. Burnett of Blairs and Janet M. Koger of Danville; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Henry W. Taylor and the Rev. Clayton Murphy officiating.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the residence of her granddaughter, Carol Howell, 136 Oak Ridge Lane, off Vandola Road.

Ruby Shorter Wiggins

PELHAM, N.C. - Mrs. Ruby Shorter Wiggins of 120 Whippoorwill Lane, Pelham, N.C., went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 6, 2002, the day her church, True Gospel Baptist Church, celebrated Homecoming.

Born October 14, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Peter Benjamin Shorter and Minnie Gay Webb Shorter.

She lived in Danville prior to moving to Pelham, N.C. in 1974. She attended Brosville High School. She was married to Jesse Richard Wiggins, who predeceased her February 28, 1989.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Wray and her husband, Curtis, of Pelham, N.C.; a son, Charles Wiggins and his wife, Lynn, of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter, Amy Wray; grandsons, Richard Crowder and wife, Susan, Robert Crowder and wife, Chris, Brian Wray and wife, Lisa, Travis Wiggins and Taylor Wiggins. She had seven great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by five sisters, Lorrain Starr of Billings, Montana, Hattie Reese, Goldie Morris, Beulah Webb and Francis Talley, all of Danville, Va. and four brothers, Robert Shorter of Virginia Beach, Va., Oscar Shorter, Edward Shorter and Paul Shorter, all of Danville, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Hubert Inman and The Rev. Mike Kent officiating.

Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family received friends Tuesday, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Wray, 2766 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, N.C.

Louise Moore Atwater

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Louise Moore Atwater, of 1086 North Main St., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.

She was born in Caswell County to William Moore and Anna Hooper Moore Gainey. She was a homemaker and a member of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church. She attended Flora McDonald College.

Funeral services will be Friday 2 p.m. at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church conducted by the Revs. John Johnson and Marie Reed. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors are two sons, Mark V. Atwater and W. David "Chip" Atwater, both of Yanceyville; grandchildren, David, Josh, Jennifer and Casey Atwater.

The family will receive friends Thursday 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of "Chip" and Anne Atwater, 2615 US Highway 158 West.
