Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Sallie Gee

DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie W. Gee, 105, died Monday morning, August 30, 1999, at Riverside Nursing Home of natural causes.

Born June 1, 1894, in Mount Airy, N.C.

She married Oct. 15, 1913, to Jesse W. Gee, who predeceased her November 1964.

She lived in South Hill, for 50 years. She and her husband owned an appliance store. Her husband was an electrical contractor.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy G. Comer of Danville; and three grandchildren, C.W. Gee of South Hill, Phyllis C. Beyer and Dr. Devey R. Comer, both of Danville; and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Clarence Gee and Harry Gee.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Baptist Church, 410 Mecklenburg Ave., South Hill, Va. 23970. A private service will be held Wednesday in South Hill.

Thelma Hodges

OCALA, FLA. - Thelma Ricketts Hodges, 86, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at Harborside Health Care.

She was born in Danville, Va, and lived in Ocala since 1945.

She was married to James F. Hodges, Sr., who predeceased her.

She was owner and operator of Virginia Grill Restaurant in Ocala and with her husband managed Silver Glen Springs. She worked as physical therapist for Dr. Harding in Ocala. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Frances Wilson of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Gerry Ray of Keystone Heights; one foster daughter, Doris V. Alexander of Dayton, Ohio; three step-sons, James F. Hogdes Jr. of Mercersburg, Pa., Joseph C. Hodges of Georgetown, Tenn., and Vernon E. Hodges of Baltimore; 12 step-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one step-son, David L. Hodges.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Chapel with the Dr. Edward D. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Garden.

Early Johnson Jr.

ROANOKE, Va. - Early B. Johnson Jr., died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after eight months of declining health.

He was the son of Early B. Johnson Sr. and Mazie Trent Johnson.

He married March 8, 1952, to Hilda Hill of Bramwell, W. Va.,, who survives.

He served in the United States Army in World War II. He was a resident of the Roanoke area for 42 years and retired from Appalachian Power Company after 40 years of service. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Roanoke, the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to his wife survivors include one son, E. B. Johnson III; one brother, Edsel E. Johnson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two sisters, Charmie C. Johnson and Billie Rae Soyars of Danville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roanoke Chapel of Oakey's Funeral Home, 318 Church Street, S.W., Roanoke.

Danny Lands

DANVILLE, Va. - Arthur Daniel (Danny) Lands Jr., 21, of 723 Vicar Road, died Monday, August 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after one week there and declining health for six months.

Born June 25, 1978, in Rocky Mount, N.C., he was the son of Arthur Daniel Lands and Deborah Cutler Lands, both survive.

He moved to Danville from Rocky Mount, N.C., in 1978. He was a Honor Graudate of the 1996 Class of George Washington High School and a member of the Honor Society. He was a very avid school sports fans and a member of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one sister, Katherine (Katie) Louise Lands of the residence; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney B. Lands of Charlotte, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Bessie Waters Cutler of Pinetown, N.C.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, James T. Cutler, Sr.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Freddrey J. Vicks officiating. Burial will be in Yeatesville cemetery, Yeatesville, N.C.

In addition, a graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Yeattsville cemetery with the Rev. Lloyd Davis.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence. In addition, the family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington, N.C.

Betty Mastro

NEW JERSEY - Betty J. Mastro, 78, of 11348 Bellveda Drive, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 1999, at her residence of cancer.

Born Sept. 3, 1921, she was the daughter of Everette Buchannon and Adelle Buchannon.

Survivors include one son, Russell Mastro of Dade, Fla.; and one daughter, Barbara Myers of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at Meadow Lake cemetery with the Rev. Spencer Craddock officiating.

The family received friends at Allen and Sons Funeral Home Chapel and at the residence.

Shirley O'Neal

DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley Frances Younger O'Neal, 67, of 212 Willow St., died Monday, August 30, 1999, at her residence.

Born May 13, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Fan Younger and Sallie Jackson Younger.

She was married to William O'Neal, who survives.

She was a nurses assistant for Home Health and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include three brothers, William Henry Younger of Blairs, Johnnie Younger of Danville and Bernard Younger of Riverside, Calif.; two sisters, Lucy Y. Nash of Danville and Elizabeth Mills of Cincinnati.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Denny White Sr.

GRETNA, Va. - Denny Landon White Sr., 64, of 2380 Boxwood Road, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999.

Born Aug. 17, 1935, in Whitewood, he was the son of David White and Elsie White.

He married Elizabeth Neal White, who survives.

He was a retired carpenter with Harmony Hollow Orchards.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Denny L. White Jr. and Roger White, both of Gretna; one daughter, Priscilla White of Gretna; one sister, Eula Lewis of Front Royal; four brothers, Frelin White of Winchester, Wendell White of Leesburg, Authur White and Willard White, both of Front Royal; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Beulah Gillespie and Freda Edwards; and one brother Orlis White.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Moser officiating. Burial will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Mildred Young

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred J. Young, 81, of 819 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, 11:05 p.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Oscar Dodd and Annie Booth Dodd.

She was married February 20, 1955, to Howard Aubrey Young, who survive.

Mrs. Young was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church and its Ladies circle. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Jones Sausage Company until her retirement.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Brantley H. Jones of Danville; one sister, Ruth Collins of Danville; and two granddaughters, Alison P. Jones and Kelly F. Esguerra, both of Greensboro, N.C.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Adolf Oterson officiating.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Albert Adkins

DRY FORK, Va. - Albert James Adkins, 67, of 460 Cedar Ridge Road, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at his residence.

Born August 22, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Albert James Adkins Sr. and Lenna Adkins Adkins.

He was married to Beverly Burnett Adkins, who survives.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Patricia A. Stowe of Danville, and Theresa Adkins; two sons, Keith Adkins of Danville and Timothy Adkins of Chatham; one sister, Jean Wells of Florence, S.C.; two brothers, Charles Adkins of Rocky Mount, and C.A. Adkins of Ringgold; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Chatham Burial Park with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Danny Lands

James Lane

DANVILLE, VA. - James Edward Lane, 71, of 600 Main St., died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at his residence.

Born Jan. 2, 1928, in Danville, he was the son of Arthur R. Lane and Ethel G. Lane.

He was of the Baptist faith and served in the United States Navy.

Survivors include one sister, Edith Vicks of Danville; one brother, Albert E. Lane of Fairfax; one son, Douglas Holcomb of Woodbridge; two daughters, Sharon Gail Mitchell of Beverdam, and Deborah Perrilloux of Ponchatoula, La.; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joe Northern officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 honor guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home.

Ruth Montgomery

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ruth Elder Montgomery, 87, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was a resident of The Oakes for several years and formerly lived at 4538 Fort Ave.

She was the widow of William Lee Montgomery.

Born August 15, 1912, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Ella Craig Elder. She was formerly a member of the Ageless Wonders, and a volunteer with the American Red Cross and a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church.

Mrs. Montgomery is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Hall and husband Jim Varley of Wingate, N.C., and Betty Jean Reid and husband, Terry of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Grant Hall and wife, Teresa of Wingate, N.C., and Elizabeth Nichole Reid of Lynchburg.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel with the Rev. Nathanial Habel, Rev. Jeff Alphin and Rev. Ed Parrish officiating. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Schoolfield cemetery in Danville.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, or Hospice of Union County, N.C.
