Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Patricia Mann

CHATHAM, Va. - Patricia Crews Mann, 41, of 4144 Chalk Level Road, died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 5, 1958, in Danville, she was the daughter of Helen Tallent Crews, who survives and the late Havert Odell Crews.

She was married to Russell Mann, who also survives.

She was a member and treasurer of Round Pond Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother of Sandy Level and husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Bobby Mann of Chatham; one daughter, Crissy Mann of Chatham; maternal grandmother Mae Tallent of Pittsville; paternal grandparents, Millard and Sarah Crews of Sandy Level; two brothers, Jeffrey Crews and Timmy Crews, both of Sandy Level; one sister, Debra Carman of Penhook.

She was predeceased by one sister, Lorrie Mae Crews.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Round Pond Baptist Church with the Rev. A.A. Blanks and Rev. John Belderes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Odell Morrison Sr.

CHATHAM, Va. - Odell Morrison Sr., 60, of 117 Robins Court, died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Hettie McKenzie.

He was married to Louella Morrison, who survives.

He was employed by Saunders Saw Mill. He was a member of the Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and a member of the Male Chorus.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven sons, Odell Morrison Jr. of Gretna, Henry Morrison and Kenneth Morrison, both of Chatham, Steve Darrell, Michael Morrison and Jerry Morrison, all of Danville; four daughters, Jessie Morrison of the residence, Mary Ann Carter of Chatham, Angel Morrison and Lucille Myers, both of Danville; three brothers, Willie McKenzie of Bland, Starling McKenzie of Lynchburg and Ricky McKenzie of Chatham; two sisters, Bernice Younger of Gretna and Lorrine Price of Augusta, Ga.; and sixteen grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones officiating. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Corbert Ray "Bud" Myrick

DANVILLE, Va. - Corbert Ray "Bud" Myrick, 75, of Danville, VA., and formerly of Reidsville, N.C., died Thursday, September 9, 1999, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 1999, 2 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow in Reidlawn cemetery.

Mr. Myrick enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1942, and served during World War II. He was a retired officer in the Merchant Marines. He was a son of the late Lonnie Talmage and Cleo Kelley Myrick of Reidsville, N.C.

He is survived by three children, Marilyn Myrick Rigney of Danville, Va., Larry K. Myrick of Rocky Mount, Va., and Michael R. Myrick of Reidsville, N.C.; three grandchildren; Christopher R. Davis of Reidsville, N.C., Melody Anne Myrick and Bradley K. Myrick of Rocky Mount, Va.; one great grandchild, Hannah M. Davis of Danville, Va; two brothers, Adam T. Myrick of Reidsville, N.C., and Ernest A. Myrick of Minnieville, Ore.; four sisters, Lois Myrick Johnson, Mammie Myrick Johnson and Betty Myrick Busick, all of Reidsville, N.C., and Ruby Myrick Gilliam of Winter Haven, Fla.

The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Friday, September 10, 1999, from 7-9 p.m., other times at the residence of the daughter, Marilyn M. Rigney, 403 Mowbray Arch, Danville, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetic Association.

Dale Roach

DANVILLE, Va. - Dale Kenneth Roach, 51, of 382 Norwood Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his residence of four years of declining health.

Born Feb. 18, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Jack Kenneth Roach and Eileen Martin Roach Bogusz, who survive. He was the step-son of Victor T. Bogusz, who survives.

He was married to Kathleen Kelly Roach, who also survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War. He was a resident of Danville for the past 10 years and of the Catholic faith. He was retired from Merchants Tire and Auto as manager.

In addition to his mother and step-father, both of N. Olmstead, Ohio and wife of the residence, survivors include, four sons, David Joseph Roach, Derrick Jon Roach and Darrell James Roach, all of the residence, and Donald Allen Roach of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Darleen Crow and Donna Marie Bogusz, both of Cleveland; one brother, Darin Bogusz of Cleveland; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Father David McGuire officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nancy Suttle

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Nancy Clarke Suttle, 70, died Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at Indian River Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness.

She was born August 30, 1929, in Danville, Va.

She was married for 50 years to Clifford Suttle, who survives.

She moved to Vero Beach 10 years ago from Macon, Ga. She was the retired president and past owner of Employment Matchmakers, Inc. in Macon, Ga.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Allen Clarke Suttle of Raleigh, N.C., and Clifford Mark Suttle of Macon, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Lowther Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Torrence

WAVERLY, Va. - Marjorie Bishop Torrence, 63, a resident of Norris Ave., Waverly, Va., died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at her home after an extended illness.

She was born on May 22, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, Va., the daughter of Oscar Winn and the late Annie Thornton Winn.

She was a graduate of Longwood College and received her master's degree in education from the College of William and Mary. She had formerly taught elementary school in the Pittsylvania County Public Schools and had been an elementary school supervisor for Pittsylvania County. She had worked as a textbook consultant for Simon and Schuster Publishing Co. She was a former member of the Chatham Baptist Church and was currently a member of Waverly Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, David Lawson Torrence; sons, Roger Winn Bishop of Chatham, Va., and Robert Willard Bishop of Raleigh, N.C.; two step-daughters, Patrice T. Conrad and Capt. Dianne T. Helinski, both of Pittsburg, Pa.; step-son, David L. Torrence Jr. of Windsor, Va; father, Oscar Winn of Whitmell, Va.; five grandchildren, Kent, Keith, Ellery, Lauren and Caitlyn Bishop; and eight step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 11, 1999, at 3 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with the Rev. Brad Reynolds officiating. Interment icon services will be held in Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery, Cornelius, N.C., on Sunday, September 12, 1999, at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to the Crater Community Hospice, 840 W. Roslyn Road, Suite E. Colonial Heights, VA. 23834 or to the Waverly Baptist Church, P.O. Box 576, Waverly, Va., 23890.

Marion Black

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Marion Blanche Stortz Black, 88, of 1113 North Main St., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 9, 1911, in Vicksville, she was the daughter of Frederick W. Stortz and Marion Blanche Pittman Stortz.

She was married to Edwin Nelms Black Jr.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Edwin Nelms Black III of South Boston, Frederick S. Black of Halifax and Richard H. Black of Staunton; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Bob Fox officiating.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Judson Bledsoe

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Judson C. Bledsoe, 91, of 529 Logan St., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond.

Born Sept. 17, 1907, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Samuel Y. Clark and Lutie H. Clark.

She was married to R. Garnett Bledsoe Jr.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Robert G. Bledsoe III of Richmond; and one grandchild.

She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Fox and the Rev. Frank Riley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Hilda Brown

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Hilda Tucker Brown, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 24, 1911, in Halifax County.

Survivors include one sister, Beatrice Williams of Halifax.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant CME Church in Halifax with the Rev. Ronald Dean officiating.

Burial will be in church cemetery.

Remains will lie in state one hour prior to service.

The family will receive friends at 1027 Pine Trail, Halifax.

Naomi Burton

DANVILLE, Va. - Naomi Loetta Pippin Burton, 74, of 13 Oak Ridge Ave., died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a four-day stay and 10 years of declining health.

Born June 4, 1925, in Caney Valley community of Washington County, she was the daughter of Walter Pippin and Lillie Pippin Pippin.

She was married July 25, 1942, to Ralph L. Burton, who survives.

She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked in quality control as an inspector for Dan River Inc. for many years. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church and also the Women's Circle of the church.

She also worked as a volunteer helping with mental patients.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Joan C. Burton of Danville; one son, Larry D. Burton of the residence; two sisters, Winona Hopkins and Wanda Mobley, both of Danville.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Pippin and Sterling Pippin.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. George B. Neas officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sarah Lawson

DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Louise Hairston Lawson, 84, of 909 Cole St., died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 19, 1914, in Martinsville, she was the daughter of John Hairston and Ruth Hairston.

She was married to Alfonza Lawson.

She was retired from the Masonic Temple in 1980, and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include one son, Alfonza Wayne Lawson of Danville; two daughters, Yvonne Lawson of Washington, D.C. and Jean Dixon of Oakland, Calif.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be noon Saturday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Strader officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Cecil Loftis Jr.

LAFAYETTE, Calif. - Cecil L. Loftis Jr., 51, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, after six weeks of declining health.

Born July 27, 1948, he was the son of the late Cecil L. Loftis and Louise H. Loftis, who survives.

He was married to Maureen Loftis, who survives.

He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam conflict. He lived his early life in Danville and was associated with Loftis Tire Company. For the past 25 years, he lived in Florida and California. He worked as project construction manager with Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Lafayette.

In addition to his mother of Ringgold, Va. and wife of Lafayette, survivors include two sons, Clarence Von Gal of Vero Beach, Fla. and Cal Von Gal of Autaugazille, Al.; one daughter, Nicole Loftis of the residence; three sisters, Linda Dalton of Sante Fe, N.M., Dot Moore of Ringgold and Patricia Burke of Dry Fork.

A memorial service will be held in Lafayette.
