John Collie Jr.

KEELING, Va. - John Collie Jr., 69, of 224 Adams Trail, Keeling, Va., died at his home after a two-year decline in health.

Born April 3, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Collie Sr. and Elizabeth Dovald Collie.

He was married to Barbara Sheilds Collie on September 22, 1951, who survives.

Mr. Collie was a graduate of the University of Richmond and a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a well-known farmer and was recognized as "Outstanding Young Farmer" for both Pittsylvania County and the Southside District in 1958. In 1989, he received the County Resource Conservation Award. He was a member of the Virginia Corn Growers Association, the Virginia Soybean Association and Concerned Friends of Tobacco. He was President of Collie Equipment Co., which he owned and operated for 36 years. On numerous occasions, the company was recognized for excellence. He served a number of terms on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Farm Equipment Association. At the time of his retirement, he was a member of the Eastern Equipment Dealers Association.

He was a charter member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church where he had served as Deacon and Elder and currently was serving as Trustee. He served for many years as Treasuerer for the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. He had also served on the Board for Woodlawn Academy.

In addition to his wife, John Charles Collie and daughter-in-law, Cheryl H. Collie of Mechanicsville, a daughter, Sarah Lanier Collie of Charlottesville, a sister, Katherine C. Speegle and brother-in-law, J. William Spegle of Yorktown, a brother, James D. Collie and sister-in-law, Margaret H. Collie of Vienna; and three grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth, John Benjamin and Emily Garland Collie, all of Mechanicsville.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Kentuck Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jeffrey L. Wright officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kentuck Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.

Phillip Fallen

CLOVER, Va. - Phillip Craig Fallen, 20, of 5087 Mount Laurel Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born June 15, 1979, in Halifax County, he was the son of James Floyd Fallen and Roxie F. Williams, both survive. He was the stepson of Johnny Mack Williams.

In addition to his parents of Clover, and step-father of Clover, survivors include one son, Damion Scott Fallen; three sisters, Margaret F. Hughes of South Boston, Brandy Fallen and Jessica Fallen, both of Scottsburg; four brothers, Brian Fallen of Clover, Jamie F. Fallen

Jr., Johnny Mack Williams and David Wayne Williams, all of Scottsburg; grandparents, Watt and Rosalea Lacks of Clover and step-grandparents, Flave and Margaret Williams, of Scottsburg.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery, Scottsburg.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church and at other times at the residence.

Bess Horne

DANVILLE, Va. - Bess Rose Horne, 90, of 287 Linden Drive, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Stratford House where she was a resident for eight years.

Born May 29, 1909, in Isle of Wight County, she was the daughter of Samuel Herbert Rose and Bessie Daughtry Rose.

She was married to Landon C. Horne, who predeceased her Nov. 20, 1987.

She attended Averett College and graduated from School of Nursing as a registered nurse from the Atlantic City General Hospital in 1933.She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Wednesday Club, the Forest Hills Garden Club and Benevolent Society.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include three nephews, Russ Wentz of Charlotte, N.C., John Wentz of Charlotte, and Claude B. Tiller Jr. of Somerset, Ky.; and one niece, Rose McMichael of Reidsville, N.C.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating.

The family will receive friends 3-4 p.m. Wednesday in the Evergreen Room at Stratford House, 1111 Main St.

Landgon Joslin

DANVILLE, Va. - Asher Langdon Joslin, 89, died Tuesday, September 14, 1999.

He was born in Webster, Mass., June 19, 1910, the son of the late Clara Elizabeth Langdon and Ernest Asher Joslin.

He graduated cum laude in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1933, and later studied at Cornell University. He served in the European theater as lieutenant in the United States Navy as a deep sea diver during World War II. In 1947, he moved to Danville where he worked at Dan River Inc. until his retirment. He was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations in Danville including the Lions Club. He attended Epiphany Episcopal Church where he served on vestry.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise Brockwell Joslin, who died on April 19, 1999.

He is survivors by his daughter, Mary Louise Joslin Sexton, who is known by her professional name, Emyl Jenkins; a grandson, Langdon Jenkins, and a granddaughter, Joslin Jenkins Hultazapple of Richmond.

A graveside service will be in Historic Oakwood cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Robert M. Sexton, with whom he made his residence, 416 Maple Lane, Danville, Va., 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robie Nelson

VIRGILINA, Va. - Robie James Nelson, 83, of P.O. Box 126, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 23, 1915, in Person County, N.C., he was the son of Henry Daniel Nelson and Callie Wilson Nelson.

He was married to Lorene Gravitt Nelson, who survives.

He was a retired tobacco farmer and retired employee of Collins & Aikman.

In addition to his wife of Virgilina, survivors include one daughter, Shellie Bellairs of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, James A. Nelson of Roanoke, and Ira B. Nelson of South Boston; one brother, Howard Nelson of Roxboro, N.C.; six sisters, Rose Chaney of Roxboro, N.C., Catherine Whitlow of Virgilina, Louise Carmichael of Roxboro, N.C., Idarea Walker of Hopewell, Frances Wheeler and Fannie Mae Walker, both of Roxboro; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Virgilina cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Winsome Puryear

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Winsome Baker Puryear, 76, of 4091 Huell Matthews Highway, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1922, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Ralph Walden Baker and Eva Whitt Baker.

She was married to James Stover Puryear, who survive.

She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and a homemaker.

In addition to her husband of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Kenneth James Puryear of South Boston and Dennis Ray Puryear of Scottsburg; one daughter, Pamela P. Ashley of Roxboro; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery in Cluster Springs.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Paul Saunders

HALIFAX, Va. - Paul Carrington Saunders, 62, of 1128 Leighwood Trail, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at his residence.

Born June 28, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Lee Saunders and Ruth Kennedy Saunders.

He was married to Evelyn Redd Saunders.

He was a member of the Halifax Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was a foster father to 71 children.

In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two daughters, Paula Daniel of South Boston and Kim Coates of Halifax; four sons, Jimmie Saunders of Java, Phillip Saunders of South Boston, Michael Saunders and David Saunders, both of Halifax; two sisters, Evelyn Batterson of Powhatan, and Sallie Hancock of Rocky Mount; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Halifax Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Kenneth Swaringen

RINGGOLD, Va. - Kenneth Lee Swaringen, 58, of 2587 South Boston Highway, died Monday, September 13, 1999, after one month in Vencor Hospital, Greensboro, N.C., and one year of declining health.

Born June 16, 1941, in Danville, he was the son of Earman Evans Swaringen and Sarah Ethel Mills Swaringen.

He served in the Virginia Army National Guard and lived all his life in Ringgold community. He was employed by Motley Electric Company as an electrician until his retirement due to health reasons. He was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Leigh Swaringen of Chatham; and one brother, Tommy Lynn Swaringen of Ringgold.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday graveside in Floral Memory Gardens with the Rev. G. David Wilson and Rev. Donald Mahan officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Tommy L. Swaringen, 2779 South Boston Highway, Route 58 East.

Wrenn-Yeatts is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Via

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Timothy Wayne Via, 36, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville and Henry County.

Born Oct. 1, 1962, he was the son of the late James Marvin Via and Carolyn Robertson Via, who survives.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his maternal grandmother, Ruth G. Robertson of Martinsville.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brother, James Michael Via.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Home with Dr. David Adkins officiating. Interment icon will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at 613 Branch St., Martinsville.

Beatrice Dooley

DANVILLE, Va. - Beatrice Willingham Dooley, 87, of 146 Confederate Ave., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 2, 1912, in McCurtain County, Okla., she was the daughter of Henry Alva Willingham and Clara Manning Willingham.

She was married to Glen R. Dooley, who survives, for 66 years.

She was a resident of Danville since 1952, and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Thursday from 1 p.m to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice Glass

BLAIRS, Va. - Alice Ann Glass, 95, of 2261 Malmaison Road, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Glass and Ella Jones Glass.

She was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sisters, Marie Womack of Danville and Naomi Elder of Petersburg.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
