Basil Gravely

DANVILLE, Va. - Basil Allen Gravely, 67, of 137 Northwest Blvd., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

Born Oct. 13, 1931, in the Ferry Road community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Lewis Gravely Sr. and Nena Byrd Gravely, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He made his home on Northwest Boulevard for nearly 50 years. He worked with Westbrook Elevator for many years before working with Southeastern Elevators, where he worked for 10 years before retiring at age 55. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Jean Fowler and June Simpson, both of Danville; two brothers, Lewis Gravely Jr. and Lance Gravely, both of Danville; a number of nieces and nephews

He was predeceased by one sister and one brother.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gable Hupp Jr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va - Gable Jackson "Jack" Hupp Jr, 66, of 301 Monroe St., in South Boston died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Born February 16, 1993 in South Boston, he was the son of Gable Jackson Hupp Sr. and Evelyn Copley Hupp.

He was married to Mary Ellen Kilgore Hupp.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and an usher, a member of the Lacy Bible Class and a former youth department teacher. He was a former member of the South Boston Lion's Club; past president and treasurer of the Sertoma Club and manager of the Virginia Employment Commission in South Boston.

In addition to the wife of residence, he is survived by two daughters, Catherine H. Ratliff of South Boston and Wendy Renee Hupp of Richmond; his mother; one sister, Elaine H. Motley of South Boston; three brothers, Dale S. Hupp of Richmond, Norman C. Hupp of Garner, N.C., and Douglas C. Hupp of Richmond and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Robert C. Hupp and his father, Gable Jackson Huff Sr.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Fox officiating. Burial will take place in the Oak Ridge cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Landgon Joslin

DANVILLE, Va. - Asher Langdon Joslin, 89, died Tuesday, September 14, 1999.

He was born in Webster, Mass., June 19, 1910, the son of the late Clara Elizabeth Langdon and Ernest Asher Joslin.

He graduated cum laude in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1933, and later studied at Cornell University. He served in the European theater as Lieutenant in the United States Navy as a deep-sea diver during World War II. In 1947, he moved to Danville where he worked at Dan River Mills until his retirment. He was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations in Danville including the Lions Club. He attended Epiphany Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise Brockwell Joslin, who died on April 19, 1999.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Louise Joslin Sexton, who is known by her professional name, Emyl Jenkins, a son-in-law, Robert M. Sexton, a grandson, Langdon Jenkins, and a granddaughter, Joslin Jenkins Hultazapple of Richmond.

A graveside service will be in Historic Oakwood cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina, Saturday, September 18 at 12 Noon.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Grover Minter

CASCADE, Va. - Grover Landon Minter, 75, of 269 May Hardy Road, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 23, 1924, in Henry County, he was the son of Tommy Joe Minter and Myrtle Bray Minter.

She was married to Sylvia Hyler Minter, who survives.

He made his home in Danville for many years before moving to the Brosville area 28 years ago. He worked at Dan River Inc. in his earlier years before becoming a barber, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Say Saints.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Cobb of Liberty, N.C., Debbie Bryant and Rhonda Adkins, both of Danville; four sons, Roger Minter, Terry Minter, Kevin Minter, all of Danville, and Dennis Minter of Brosville; one step-son, John Andrew "Andy" Sadler of Chapin, S.C.; three sisters, Gertrude Sage of Brosville, Nancy Inman of Danville and Irene Powell of Eden, N.C.; three brothers, Curtis Minter, Clifton Minter and Glen Minter, all of Axton; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop William Collins and the Rev. J.B. Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in Flora Hills Memory Garden.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence in the Brosville community.

Morris Scruggs

DANVILLE, Va. - Morris Scruggs, 79, of 167 Dalton St., died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at his residence.

Born Sept. 2, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Richard Scruggs and Rosa Shelton Scruggs.

He was married Aug. 17, 1963, to Ruby Mullis Scruggs, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325. He was a 32nd degree Mason with Roman Eagle Blue Lodge Scottish Rite Mason. He was of the Christian faith. He worked for Trailways Bus Lines as Manager for 40 years until his retirement.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Gregory M. Scruggs of Danville.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Harry Scruggs, Kyle Scruggs, Otey Scruggs and Earl Scruggs; and four sisters, Lucy S. Brown, Iris S. Quinn, Hazel S. Crane, and Ruby S. Cassada.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. John Meadows officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325 honor guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Emma Williams

DANVILLE, Va. - Emma Davis Williams, 80, of 123 Tamworth Place, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after two days in the hospital and 18 months of declining health.

Born Oct. 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Howard Pierce David and Willie Mae Pritchett Davis.

She was married February of 1944, to Hassell Coleman Williams, who predeceased February 21, 1978.

She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She lived her entire life in Danville. She retired in 1980, after 38 years of service, from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked as an inspector at Number 8.

Survivors include one sister, Carrie D. Quisenberry of Danville; one niece, Bobbi A. Quisenberry of Danville; and one nephew, of Jerry L. Quisenberry of Danville; one great-nephew and one great-niece.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. George B. Neas officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 767 Main Street, Danville, Virginia 24541.

Evelyn Buckner

DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Gentry Buckner, 96, of 133 Oakwood Circle, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 12, 1903, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Joe Otha Gentry and Betty Brann Gentry.

She was married to Louis Harold Buckner, who predeceased her.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruby B. Tate of the residence; four sisters, Vera G. Myers, Pearl G. Isom, Amie G. Lancaster and Ethel G. Goforth, all of Danville.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Bumgarner

Elizabeth Motley Bumgarner, age 83, of 206 Cathy Dr. in Danville, Va. died Tuesday, September 14, 1999, on her birthday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She became ill suddenly while visiting her daughter's family in Michigan. Born September 14, 1916, at Sheva in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William George Motley and his wife Mary Pinkie Shelton Motley.

She was married to Charles Simpson Bumgarner, Jr. of the home, who survives. In addition, she is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Bumgarner McKinnon of Plymouth, Michigan, her daughter's husband John Ross McKinnon, two grandsons, Charles Kenneth McKinnon and John Motley McKinnon, and two sisters Ruby Pace of Blacksburg, Va. and Mary Will Motley of the home. She graduated from Chatham High School, Averett College, and Mary Washington College, and devoted her life to teaching in the school systems of Virginia and North Carolina. In the years shortly before her retirement, she enjoyed being school librarian at several schools in the Danville school system. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where services will be held by Rev. Paul Harfst and Rev. James Bullock on Saturday September 18 at 2:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Shelton Family Cemetary approximately one mile north of Mill Creek Baptist Church on State Road 649. (Family visitation will be at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17.)

John Collie Jr.

KEELING, Va. - John Collie Jr., 69, of 224 Adams Trail, Keeling, Va., died at his home after a two-year decline in health.

Born April 3, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Collie Sr. and Elizabeth Donald Collie.

He was married to Barbara Shields Collie on September 22, 1951, who survives.

Mr. Collie was a graduate of the University of Richmond and a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a well-known farmer and was recognized as "Outstanding Young Farmer" for both Pittsylvania County and the Southside District in 1958. In 1989, he received the County Resource Conservation Award. He was a member of the Virginia Corn Growers Association, the Virginia Soybean Association and Concerned Friends of Tobacco. He was president of Collie Equipment Co., which he owned and operated for 36 years prior to retiring in January 1999. On numerous occasions, the company was recognized for excellence. He served a number of terms on the board of directors for the Virginia Farm Equipment Association. At the time of his retirement, he was a member of the Eastern Equipment Dealers Association.

He was a charter member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church where he had served as Deacon and Elder and currently was serving as Trustee. He served for many years as treasurer for the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. He had also served on the Board for Woodlawn Academy.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son and daughter-inlaw, John Charles Collie and Cheryl H. Collie of Mechanicsville, a daughter, Sarah Lanier Collie of Charlottesville, a sister, Katherine C. Speegle and brother-in-law, J. William Speegle of Yorktown, a brother, James D. Collie and sister-in-law, Margaret H. Collie of Vienna; and three grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth, John Benjamin and Emily Garland Collie, all of Mechanicsville.

A memorial service was held Thursday at Kentuck Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jeffrey L. Wright officiating.

The family received friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Kentuck Presbyterian Church or the charity of of the donor's choice.

Elijah "Boo" Garland

DANVILLE, Va. - Elijah "Boo" Garland, 51, of 539 1/2 North Main St., died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999.

Born Sept. 14, 1948, in Danville, he was the son of James Garland, who survives, and Vinnie Wilson Garland.

He was employed with DIMON Inc. as a fork lifter for many years.

In addition to his father, survivors include three daughters, Te Sharwda Waddell, Ellisah Doby and Patrice Price, all of Danville; two sons, Elijah Motley and Antonia R. Johnson, both of Danville; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. London Walker officiating.

Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his father, 812 Colquohoun St.

Georgia Hunt

DANVILLE, Va. - Georgia Bell Dameron Hunt, 90, of 600 Main St., Apt. 504, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born March 29, 1909, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Phillip Clifford Dameron and the late Mary Elizabeth Lee Dameron.

She was married to Berkley Tas Hunt, who predeceased her May 29, 1998.

She was a housewife and attended the White Rock Missionary Church, Ringgold.

Survivors include one daughter, Gladys Stamps of Alexandria; two sons, Junior Douglas Hunt of Patterson, N.J., and John Arthur Hunt of Philadelphia; one sister, Alice Alexander of Bayside, N.Y.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at White Rock Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Strader officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins is in charge of arrangements.
