Jesse Hawker

KEELING, Va. - Jesse Gilmore Hawker Sr., 79, of 16856 Old Richmond Road, died Monday at Riverside Health Care Center after two months of declining health and three days at the center.

Born Jan. 27, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Eddie Hawker and Ruby Guill Hawker.

He lived all of his life in the Laurel Grove and Keeling communities. He was retired from the Asbestos Workers and Insulators Local #80 of Charleston, W. Va., where he worked as a heat and frost insulator. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.

He married Mamie Wood Hawker on Nov. 9, 1940. She predeceased him Feb. 26, 1994.

He is survived by four sons, Jesse G. Hawker Jr. of Burlington, N.C.; Donald N. Hawker Sr., John Samuel (Sammy) Hawker Sr., both of Keeling and Otis S. Hawker of Cascade; a sister, Ann H. Rogers of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Dawn G. Hawker Mitchell; two brothers, Lester Hawker and Herman A. Hawker; and three sisters, Gertrude Hawker, Pauline H. Oliver and Fay H. Farthing.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Henry W. Taylor and the Rev. Herman Absher officiating. Interment will follow in the Hawker Family Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, John S. (Sammy) Hawker, 3357 Mount Tabor Road.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Keeling Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 12, Keeling, VA 24566, or to the Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 26, Sutherlin, VA 24594.

Phillip 'Fred' Loyad Inman

CASCADE, Va. - Phillip "Fred" Loyad Inman, 60, of 611 Long Circle, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 20, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Henry Inman and Mary Eunice McVey Inman.

He was born in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, where he lived most of his life. He attended Brosville High School and worked at Dan River, Inc. in the Reed Dept. for a number of years until he retired on disability in 1995. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Deborah Dalton Inman, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Dianne Inman Jackson of Ringgold; a sister, Choloe Inman Eanes of Brosville; a brother, the Rev. Hubert Inman of Pelham, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Phillip Loyad Inman Jr., three brothers and one sister.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his sister, Choloe Inman Eanes, 2189 Inman Road, Brosville.

Ollie Yeatts Jennings

DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Yeatts Jennings, 86, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at her residence.

Born May 2, 1916, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Benjamin Reaves Yeatts and Madie Jones Yeatts.

She was a graduate of Averett College and Radford College. She was employed with the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. for a number of years until her retirement. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, Salvation Army Auxillary, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Wednesday Club and the Book and Art Club.

She is survived by three sisters, Carrie Barbee of Arlington, Margaret Boswell of Durham, N.C. and Patsy Hubbard of Dry Fork.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eric Burton Jennings, in 1985.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Coleman Yeatts, William R. Yeatts, Harold Yeatts and John Yeatts; and a sister, Ruth Hall.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends Monday at 2-3 p.m. in the Azalea Room at the Stratford House and 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of her sister, Patsy Hubbard, 3968 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.

Mabel Johnson Towler Johnson

DRY FORK, Va. - Mabel Johnson Towler Johnson, 88, formerly of 3569 Dry Fork Road, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Towler and Patsy Johnson Towler.

She lived in the Dry Fork community her entire life and was a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness church and was a former Sunday School teacher.

She married Samuel "Sam" W. Johnson on Jan. 24, 1931. He predeceased her in March 1988.

She is survived by a son, Roy Johnson of Danville; three daughters, Patsy Strader of Danville, Ruth Bailey of Blackstone and Rachel Cockran of Chesapeake; a sister, Minnie Kinsey of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth Terry and the Rev. Matthew Pacifico officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times the family will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Viola Tilley Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Viola Tilley Scearce, 81, of 77 Morris Avenue, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.

Born Sept. 1, 1921, in Wake County, N.C., she was the daughter of James J. Tilley and Lecy Carroll Tilley.

She lived most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Mills for 46 years, retiring at 62. She later worked at Camelot Nursing Home. She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Club.

She was married to Maynard Harding Scearce, who predeceased her.

She is survived by two daughters, Tracey Douglas Clark of Danville and Sheila S. Pruitt of Ringgold; a son, Don Scearce of Danville; a brother, James G. Tilley of Pelham, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Sondra T. Carr and Elsie T. Slayton.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Rick Yeatts

DANVILLE, Va. - Garcia A. "Rick" Yeatts, 75, of 230 Motley Avenue, died Saturday, November 9, 2002, at his residence.

Born July 23, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of "Jack" Yeatts and Edna Simpson Yeatts.

He was a professional truck driver for more than 48 years, retiring from Teamsters Local 391. He was also a veteran of the United States Army, earning the Combat Infantryman Badge for service with 23rd Infantry Regiment in Korea. He was a member of American Legion Post 325 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647.

On February 7, 1953, he married Sarah Frances McGregor. In addition to his wife, his son, Todd McGregor Yeatts and his daughter-in-law Becky; his daughter, Paula Yeatts Setliff and his son-in-law Greg, survive him. He also has two surviving granddaughters, Virginia Rebecca Yeatts and Allison Michelle Setliff.

He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Angell of Roanoke, Theresa Custer and Nancy Oltarzewski, both of Gretna; four brothers, Ryland Yeatts of Alexandria, Garland Yeatts of Latham, Ill., Ramsay Yeatts of Valrico, Fla. and Richard Yeatts of Lexington, N.C.

His parents; a brother, Stanford Yeatts; a sister, Deane Jones and a grandson, Parker Daniel Setliff, predeceased him.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park with military honors from American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Support Services, Inc., P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA 24541.

Jewell Buckner Bass

DANVILLE, Va. - Jewell Buckner Bass, 81, of 2527 Airview Drive, died November 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two days in the hospital and eight months in declining health.

Born April 25, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late James Christopher Buckner and the late Blanche Clayton Buckner.

Mrs. Bass had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked for Dan River, Inc. for several years prior to becoming a full time homemaker. She was a member of Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church on Mountain Hill Road where she was a past Sunday School Teacher and a past officer of the Williamson Memorial Women of the Church Group and she was a former Eastern Star member.

She married Earley Ray Bass on March 6, 1942.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Ruby C. Bass of Ridgeway; a brother, Harold Buckner of Danville; a granddaughter, Andrea B. Williams of Stuart; and a grandson, David Bass of Ridgeway.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Carroll H. Bass; a brother, Herbert Buckner; and a half sister, Mozelle Myers.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10th from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Reverend Phillip Pogue. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday night at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence, 2527 Airview Drive, Danville, Virginia.

Horace Paisley Dick

LEXINGTON, N.C. - Horace Paisley Dick, formerly of 234 Gray Street, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the Brian Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1917, in Greensboro, he was the son of William Wilson Dick and Cora Ruth Bishop Dick.

He had been a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class Sunday School since 1941. He was an employee of the Virginia ABC board before retiring in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie (Boots) Day Plott Dick of the Brian Center in Lexington; two sons, H. Wayne Dick of Lexington and Charles E. Dick of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, William Wilson Dick Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. Sunday before the funeral at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Barbara Warner Dodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Warner Dodson, 64, of 241 Kenmore Drive, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at her residence.

Born April 27, 2002, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Allen and Fannie Williamson Warner.

She was married to Artie J. Dodson, who predeceased her.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna Y. Swann, Karen L. Dodson, both of Danville and Elizabeth A. Jeffreys of Pelham, N.C.; three sons, Clinton Dodson, James R. Dodson, both of Danville and Eric A. Dodson of Norfolk; five sisters, Angeline Stephens of Lewisdale, Md., Alease Lewis of Buffalo, N.Y., Lettie Anderson of Chicago, Ill., Betty Doe of Washington, D.C., and Doris Thomas of Danville; and four brothers, David Warner of Danville, the Rev. Olander Warner Sr. of Greensboro, N.C., Jacob Warner of Hyattsville, Md. and Esau Warner of Mt. Rainer, Md.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Olander Warner Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Nyja Lashay Grasty

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Nyja Lashay Grasty, 15 month old daughter of Youlanda Grasty and Alvin Eugene Jones, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.

She was born July 27, 2001, in Halifax.

In addition to her mother of Long Island and her father of Nathalie, she is survived by two sisters, Kiana and Tieasha Grasty, both of Long Island; maternal grandparents, Pearlie and Alexander Grasty of Long Island; and paternal grandmother, Lorene Jones of Nathalie.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Java, with the Rev. Ralph Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Norma Cobbler Hutcherson

DRY FORK, Va. - Norma Cobbler Hutcherson, of 3544 Dry Fork Road, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health.

Born Feb. 22, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Clay Cobbler and Cordie Hutcherson Cobbler.

She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a graduate of Brevard College. During World War II, she did volunteer work for the Red Cross.

She was married to Louis A. Hutcherson, who predeceased her Nov. 16, 1993.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda H. Jeffress of Dry Fork; four sons, Nathan Hutcherson of Dry Fork, Alfred Hutcherson of Fredericksburg, David Hutcherson of Hurt and James Hutcherson of Danville; one sister, Clara Farr of Wagner, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Lee Nichols and Ann Cowan.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth Terry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cecil Martin Shelhorse

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Cecil Martin Shelhorse, 63, of 3957 Kerns Church Road, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past four years.

Born March 3, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Shelhorse, who survives and Margaret Shelhorse, who predeceased him.

He lived most of his life in the Danville area where he was a self-employed plumber. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Jean Bland Shelhorse, who survives.

In addition to his father of Thomasville, N.C. and his wife, he is survived by two sons, Loyd Shelhorse and Tony Shelhorse, both of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Crystal Shelhorse of Orlando, Fla., Susie Curlett of Ringgold and Marcy Curlett of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Keith Shelhorse of Danville; a sister, Betty Crow of Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
