Dorothy Jackson

JAVA, Va. - Dorothy B. Jackson, 88, of 1296 Java Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at her residence.

Born Jan. 25, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Preston Blair and Augusta Choice Blair.

She was married to Clay Jackson, who survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Shockoe Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one sister-in-law, Katie B. Jackson of South Boston and seies of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Walker; and one brother, Percy Blair.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. G.H. Pass officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Herman Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Gold Jones, 80, of 144 Martin Ave., formerly of 264 Park Circle, died 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at his residence after one year of declining health.

Born July 19, 1919, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Grover W. Jones and Nannie Stuart Jones.

He married Nancy Yates Jones, who predeceased him.

He lived most of his life in Danville and worked in 4B weave at Dan River Inc. He was a member of Fariview United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 647, a member of the American Legion Post No. 1097, and the Schoolfield Friend's Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela R. Bandy and Emily Claire Jones, both of Danville; one brother, Grover W. Jones of Danville; one sister, Dorothy May Berry of Hertford, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. O.H. Burton Jr. officiating with full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097 honor guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clarence Mansfield

DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Lee Mansfield, 96, formerly of 240 Clement Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 28, 1903, in Halifax, he was the son of Abner Nuble Mansfield and Maggie Rives Mansfield.

He lived in New York City for 36 years and worked as a pressman for H.W. Wilson Publishing Co. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sisters, Curtis Scruggs of Newport News, Mary Meadors of Hinesville, Ga., and Maggie Fox of Front Royal.

He was predeceased by one brother, Richard Mansfield; and two sisters, Nettie Mansfield and Gladys M. Williams.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of W.D. Mansfield, 325 Sandy River Drive.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Charles W. McBride, Jr.

GRETNA, Va. - Charles William McBride, Jr., age 85, of 607 Vaden Drive, Gretna died Wednesday, October 27, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born November 2, 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Charles William McBride, Sr. and Ethel Bradburn McBride.

Mr. McBride was predeceased by a brother Gene McBride a sister Ruby Owen and a foster sister June Ramsey.

He was a retired farmer and a charter member of West End Church of Christ where he formerly served as a deacon and trustee.

He is survived by his wife Thelma Hines McBride of the residence, a son Charles William "Bill" McBride III of Gretna; two daughters, Dale M. Anthony and Betty M. Watlington both of Danville; eight grandchildren, Christopher Barnes, James Barnes, Chuck McBride, Stacey McBride, Jason McBride, Beth Woodward, Julie Hudson and Charles Watlington; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Casey Jo and Benjamin.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 29, 1999, at West End Church of Christ by Rev. Randy Parker. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence 607 Vaden Drive, Gretna.

John McKinney

SUTHERLIN, Va. - John Dodson McKinney, 83, of 545 E. Hightower Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-week stay and several months of declining health.

Born Sept. 20, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Lee McKinney and Nannie Walker McKinney.

He was married Nov. 28, 1949, to Victoria Lynch McKinney, who predeceased him Aug. 25, 1999.

He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County where he was a retired farmer. He worked for Ford Dealership in South Hill, for a number of years as a mechanic. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four sons, Willie E. McKinney of Virgilina, Jerry "Tex" McKinney of Franklin, Glenn T. McKinney of Sutherlin, and John Wayne McKinney of Suffock; three daughters, Mary Jane Murray of Virgilina, Nancy Traylor of Matocac, and Peggy Moss of Halifax.

She was the last survivor of her immediate family.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with interment at Leemont cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will recive friends Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Harry William Pattisall

CHATHAM, Va. - Harry W. Pattisall, 66, of 209 Whittle St., died Tuesday, October 26, at his residence.

Born Feb. 24, 1933, in Danville, he was the son of the late W. Harlan Pattisall and Ruby Cook Pattisall.

He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the U.S. Air Force prior to obtaining his bachelor's degree from Fitchburg State Teachers College in 1959. He taught school in the Danville Public School System for 30 years.

He was married Jan. 12, 1957, to Doris Stone Pattisall, who survives.

He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Directors of The Learning Center. He was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and The Pittsylvania County Literacy Program.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Michael Pattisall of Alexandria, two daughters, Melanie Flores of Lexington, N.C., Kimberly Shore of Lexington, N.C.; one sister, Ann P. Wrenn of Lynchburg; one brother, Tom Pattisall of Alexandria; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn McDaniel; and a brother, Dick Pattisall

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ The King Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Donny Tucker

DANVILLE, Va. - Donald Wayne Tucker Jr., 31, of 112 Oak Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Duke Medical Center for 10 days of injuries sustained in a motocycle accident.

Born Dec. 28, 1967, in Danville, he was the son of Donald Wayne Tucker Sr. and Louise Zufall Tucker, who survive.

He was married Dec. 24, 1997, to Cindy Compton Tucker, who survives.

He lived his life in the Danville area where he was employed for 10 years with Bacon Enterprises as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Christians United Baptist Church in Danville.

In addition to his parents of Danville, and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Harley David Tucker of the residence; two sisters, Wendy T. Mazza and Amy Tucker, both of Danville; paternal grandfather, Henry Wilson of Danville.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Mary Wilson; and maternal grandparents, George Zufall and Mary Zufall.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Larry Hill officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel and at other times at the residence.

Frances Weatherford

HALIFAX, Va. - Frances Crowder Weatherford, 89, of Weatherford Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 23, 1910, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charles Crowder and Bessie Chaney Crowder.She married to James Edward Weatherford.

She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roger Wilborn officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.

Virginia Green Hester

ROXBORO - Mrs. Virginia Green Hester, 83, of 500 Hillhaven Terrace, died Thursday, October 28, 1999, at her home.

A native of Halifax Co., Va.; the daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Marion Moore Green and wife of the late Randolph Thompson Hester.

Mrs. Hester was a graduate of Averett College and Elon College.

She was an active member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Research Club. Mrs. Hester was a founder of the Cancer Service Center for Person Memorial Hospital. She was a public school teacher for over 30 years. After teaching, she continued to be intersted in education by serving on the Person County School Board.

Surviving are one son, Randolph Thompson Hester Jr. and wife Marcia McNally of Berkeley, CA. Also surviving are a grandson, Nathaniel Christopher Hester of Raleigh; one nephew William I. White, Jr. of Richmond, VA and one niece Virginia Lee White Dunnington of Bowling Green, VA.

Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Saturday, October 30, 1999, at Long Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. John E. Harwood, Jr. Burial will be in the Hester Family cemetery located in Hester's Store Community.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 PM Friday, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Hattie Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Liles Jones, 79, of 137 Princess Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at her residence.

Born Dec. 4, 1919, in Morven, N.C., she was the daughter of Moses Liles and Carrie Moore Liles.

She was married to Henry Jones, who survives.

She was employed at the Virginia Tobacco Factory prior to her retirement. She was a member of Bennett Memorial Missionary Baptist Church where she served as president and member of the senior usher board, President and Founder of the Danville Reaching Out Prayer Band, the Sisters of Life, a member of the senior choir and the Danville Usher Union and Vicinity.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Burnice Marshall of Manhattan, N.Y., William Henry Jones of Danville; three sisters, Stella Marshall of Morven, N.C., Bertha Harris of High Point, N.C., and Martha Powell of Danville; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was prececeased by one son, Samuel Jones.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bennett Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 165 Levelton St., with the Rev. Clarence Hairston Jr. officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

William Lewis Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - William Crawford Lewis Sr., 80, of 618 Worsham St., died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-week stay and several years of declining health.

Born March 16, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Marshall Lewis and Cassie Smith Lewis.

He married Virginia Dishner Lewis, April 14, 1944, who predeceased him Oct. 3, 1992.

He served in the United States Army from 1941-1943. He retired from J.T. Townes Printing Company as a printing press operator. He was a member of the Morotock Masonic Lodge No. 210 for over 50 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Robyn Lewis Brumfield of Danville; one son, William C. Lewis Jr. of Danville; one brother, John W. Lewis of Roanoke; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddie Vicks and the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence
