Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

C. Carroll Wyatt

C. Carroll Wyatt, 88, of Vero Beach, Florida died on December 15, 1999. He was born on February 15, 1911, in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Wyatt attended the University of Virginia, William & Mary, and studied advertising at Columbia University in New York City. He won several awards in the retail advertising business.

Mr. Wyatt and his wife, Louise, of 61 years were formally of Danville, Virginia, and were members of the Mount Vernon Methodist Church. He was formerly Advertising Director of the Register & Bee.

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne W. Maurer of Vero Beach, Florida and husband Woody, of Vero Beach, Florida, two grandchildren, Linda Maurer of Vero Beach and Jack Maurer of Rome, New York, three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Amato, Richmond, Virginia, Mrs. Nancy Owens, Annandale, Virginia, and Mrs. Ruth Rand, Willoughby, Ohio. He is preceded by his wife, Louise, a daughter, Linda C. Wyatt and his parents.

Arrangements are being made by the National Cremation Society, Donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation Inc. 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, Fla. 33136 or your favorite charity.

William "Bill" Fogleman

DANVILLE, Va. - William Peter Fogleman, 72, of 227 Motley Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center for one day after several years of declining health.

Born May 23, 1927, in Chatham County, N.C., he was the son of George Fogleman and Ida Jones Fogleman.

He married Dorothy Sealock Fogleman, December 1986, who survives.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He lived most of his life in the Danville area. He was employed with RC Cola prior to his retirement and was also employed with Lawrence and Nester Distributors. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Judy Travis of Danville; three sons, Richie Harlow of Danville, Billy Motley of Blairs and Tony Fogleman of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Robert Fogleman of Florida and Jimmy Fogleman of Wilmington, N.C.; four sisters, Mary Williams and Georgia Dorsey, both of Florida, Margaret Enten of Wilmington, N.C. and Shirley Edwards of North Carolina; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, Lucky Fogleman; and one brother, Paul Fogleman.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Davis officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 1097

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nadine Jackson

DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Nadine Goad Jackson, 74, of 140 Rockford Place, formerly of Arnett Blvd., died Tuesday night, December 21, 1999, at the residence of her daughter after a decline in health.

She was born May 3, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, Va., a daughter of George W. Goad and Georgia Barbour Goad.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Jackson, June 9, 1980.

She had lived all her life in the Danville area and was a retired hairdresser. She was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church.

Survived by two daughters Susan J. Simpson of Danville and Janet J. Scott of Chatham, Va.; three grandchildren Wendy L. Simpson of Raleigh, N.C., William F. Scott, Jr. and John Norman Scott, both of Chatham, Va.; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 23, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Charles Swanson. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to your favorite charity.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter at 140 Rockford Place.

Willard Matherly, Jr.

CHATHAM, Va. - Willard Jesse Matherly, Jr., 58, of 1741 Gap Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at his residence.

Born April 17, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willard Jesse Matherly and Mary Elizabeth Rigney Matherly.

Survivors include one son Terry Dean Barbour; two brothers Roger Matherly and Samuel Matherly, both of Chatham.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Christian Church cemetery with the Minister J.D. Hunt III officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence of his brother, Samuel Matherly, 541 Glenview Drive, Chatham.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Royal McIvor

DANVILLE, Va. - Royal l Pittman McIvor, 71, of 316 Gray St., died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1928, in Monroe, he was the son of Royal C. McIvor and Margaret Gordon McIvor.

He married June Turner McIvor, who predeceased Aug. 12, 1998.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy served during World War II. Since 1951, he made his home in Danville. He was a retiree of Norfolk Southern Railway and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Richard McIvor and William McIvor, both of Danville; four daughters, Ruth Hudson of Providence, N.C., Peggy Cobbs, Susan Hariston and Brenda Warren, all of Danville; two brothers, Edward D. McIvor of Madison Heights, and Wilson E. McIvor of Charlottesville; one sister, Betty Jane Jones of Willow Springs, N.C.; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Brian Keith McIvor and one daughter, Betty McIvor.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James W. Mathieson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Virginia Ragsdale

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Davis Ragsdale, 79, of 204 Brightwell Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center's emergency room of two years of declining health.

Born Jan. 20, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank E. Davis and Ludie Bivens Davis.

She married Gaston Lee Ragsdale, who predeceased her in 1984.

She made her home in Danville all of her life and was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church.

She retired in 1984, from Dan River Inc. with nearly 30 years of service.

Survivors include two sons, Terry L. Ragsdale and Michael W. Ragsdale, both of Danville; one daughter, Jan Garvin of Johnsville, S.C.; one sister, Evelyn McLaughlin of Danville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Thomas Smith

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - - Thomas Smith, 78, of 422 Bradley Road, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Beverly Health Care Center, Martinsville.

Born May 27, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas Smith and Cora Goins Smith.

He married Dorothy Parker Smith, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, served during World War II. He was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church and a retired employee of Dan River, Inc.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one daughter Ellawease S. Averell of Danville; two sisters Gladiola S. Bailey of Philadelphia and Doris S. Banks of Danville; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie J. Toomer officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

A viewing will be noon-8 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks & Bros. Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Tommie Snead, Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Tommie L. Snead, Jr., age 54, of 809 Ferry Road, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday afternoon, December 21, 1999, after five months of declining health.

Mr. Snead was born in Danville on July 13, 1945, a son of Tommie L. Snead, Sr., who survives and the late Carlethia Garrett Snead.

He married Carol Young Snead on April 22, 1967, who survives.

Mr. Snead was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. Mr. Snead had spent most of his life in the Danville area where he was owner and operator of Snead Masonry. He previously worked as a truck driver, owning his own trucking company. He was a member of Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Stewards.

Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence and his father of Pelham, North Carolina, include two sons: Bryan Snead of the residence and Scott Snead and daughter-in-law Mary F. Snead of Danville, and one brother and sister-in-law: Harold O. and Dorothy Snead of Danville, and two sisters: Sue S. Salmons and brother-in-law, A.W. Salmons, and Linda S. Cousins and brother-in-law: Perry Cousins all of Danville, and his mother-in-law; Bessie L. Young of Danville, and one grandson: Joseph Scott Snead of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. W.L. Wade and Rev. Linwood Hairfield Sr.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church Building Fund, 133 Woodberry Drive, Danville, VA 24540 or to the Danville Cancer Association, Inc., 1225 West Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541.

Garnett Vaughan

AXTON, Va. - Garnett R. Vaughan, 95, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville/ Henry County.

Born April 3, 1904, in Halifax County, he was the son of Thomas Archer Vaughan and Effie Whitlow Vaughan.

He married Ellen Stembridge Vaughan, who survives.

He was retired from E.W. Meuller Construction Company in Newport News, Va. He was a member of New Hope Christian Church, in Alberta.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter Greta V. Clay of Axton; one son G. Russell Vaughan, Jr. of Axton; one sister Erlene V. Sussman of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

A funeral was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Snyder officiating.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Crestview Memorial Park, LaCrosse, with the the Rev. Danny Maupin officiating.

Willie Walters

DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Mae Harris Walters, 74, of 240 Garfield St., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at her residence.

Born March 27, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of Roosevelt Harris and Lucille Neffries Harris.

She married William Walters Sr., who survives.

She was a retiree of Dan River, Inc. She was a member of Gospel Light Holiness Church where she served as Superintendent of Sunday School.

In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include one son William Leroy Walters of Danville; two sisters Irene Merritt of Danville, and Virginia Gay of Washington; one brother Rudolph Johnson of Norfolk; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A viewing will be noon-8 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Pastor Laura Tarpley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Michael Williams

DANVILLE, Va . - Michael Williams, 45, of 826 Green St., died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 7, 1954, he was the son of Lawrence C. Williams and the step-son of Ethel Williams.

He was employed at Dan River, Inc. and in his early years attended White Stone Penecostal Holiness Church, Sutherlin.

Survivors include three sisters, Frances Brooks of Sutherlin, Elouise Parker of Washington D.C. and Regina Clark of Seat Pleasant, Md.; three brothers Edward Williams of Hopkinsville, Ky., Robert Gene Williams of Washington D.C. and Leonard C. Williams of Sutherlin.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at White Stone Penecostal Holiness Church, Sutherlin, with the Bishop William Yarborough officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
