Charlie Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Thomas Davis, 57, of 136 Lynch St., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at his residence.

Born Feb. 26, 1942, in Danville, he was the son of Willie Howard Davis and Verna Moser Davis.

He worked in maintenance at Averett College until he retired due to a disability. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one sister, Ruby D. Adkins, of Gretna.

A funeral will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Albert Moser officiating. Burial will follow at Java Church of God Prophecy cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, from 7-8:30 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence of Ruby Adkins, 515 N. Main St., Gretna.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Edmonds

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Deacon William Lee Edmonds, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at his residence.

He was born July 3, 1925, in Halifax Co.

He was married to Catherine Edmonds, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Mary Jones of South Boston, Rosa Edmonds of Pittsylvania Co., Marguerite Edmonds of South Boston, Ann Bailey of Crystal Hill, and Patricia Edmonds of Florida; five sons, William Edmonds Jr. and Michael Edmonds of Halifax, Braxton Edmonds and Gerald Edmonds of South Boston, and John Edmonds of California; four sisters, Mary Womack, Isabell Womack, Louise Womack, and Ida Barksdale all of Halifax; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church in South Boston with the Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating, with interment following in the Edmonds Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 3115 Lewis Ferrell Rd., South Boston. Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services, Inc., is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Jordan Sr.

EASLEY, S.C. - Roy Jordan Sr., 89, of 213 Laboone Road, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999 after one year of declining health.

Born Dec. 30, 1909, in Piedmont, Jordan was a son of Edgar Jordan and Amanda Jordan. In October 1941, he married Ollie Phillips Jordan, who preceded him in death.

Jordan lived most of his life in Danville, Va. He worked at Dan River Inc. and later at Auto Parts and Glass, from which he retired. He later worked part time for 20 years at Elliott's Cleaners and Laundromat. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Jordan is survived by two sons, Roy Phillip Jordan of the residence and Roy "Pete" Jordan Jr. of Greenville, two daughters, Pearl J. Jones and Sybil J. Beattie, both of Easley, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jordan was predeceased by two sons, Robert Lee Jordan and James W. "Jay" Jordan, and three brothers, Luther Jordan, Frank Jordan and Willie Jordan.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel in Danville with the Rev. Hylton Lawrence officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence of his granddaughter, Debbie Jordan Shelton, 5945 Rocksprings Road, Sutherlin.

Lillie Mae Foy

CHATHAM, Va. - Lillie Mae Foy, 71, of 2548 Spring Garden Road, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in Elder Care Nursing Home, Rocky Mount.

Born May 5, 1928, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Henry Webster Foy and Grace Dexter Smith Foy.

She lived in Greensboro, N.C. prior to moving to the Spring Garden community nine years ago. Before retiring she worked as a cashier for an ABC Package store.

Survivors include one sister, Frances Oakes of Chatham.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Ruby I. Tansley, Edna M. Gauldin and Evelyn B. Foy; and one brother, James H. Foy.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Michael Burnett officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Harry and Francis Oakes.

Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Street chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marion Haley

DANVILLE, Va. - Marion J. Haley, 69, of 216 Swain Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at his residence.

Born April 23, 1930, in Newport News, he was the son of the late Ottis Tucker Haley and Alice W. Bryant, who survives.

He was married to Delma Chaney Haley, who survives.

Mr. Haley was a professional engineer for the State Health Department, working for 20 years in Richmond before transferring to Danville as regional director of water programs. He retired in 1988.

He was veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors includes one brother, Robert M. Haley and his wife Jean C. Haley of Sutherlin, Va.; one aunt, Eleanor Yancey of Oxford, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Zane G. Norton and the Rev. Linwood Daniel conducting the service. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Wayles R. Harrison Cancer Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2687, Danville, Va. 24541 or to the Danville Humane Society.

Evelyn Lewis

HALLANDALE, Fla. - Mrs. Evelyn Blank Lewis died on December 25, 1999 in Hallandale, Florida. She was the wife of Herbert Lewis and widow of the late Lewis Blank of Danville. She was the beloved mother of Barry Holt Blank of Baltimore, Maryland, Irving Michael Blank of Richmond, Virginia, Sara Rebecca Gilbert of New York City and Rose Ann Hathorn of Manchester, New Hampshire. She also leaves eight cherished grandchildren and five treasured great grandchildren. She was a life member of Hadassah, the City of Hope and of the Aetz Chayim Synagogue in Danville.

Graveside services will be held Monday, December 27, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. from Aetz Chayim cemetery by the Rabbi Michael Pont. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Logan

NATHALIE, Va. - Deacon Herbet Lee Logan, 79, died on Dec. 24, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Halifax County.

He married Mattie Logan of Nathalie, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Anna Rone of Colonia, N.J., Percilla McWilliams of Richmond, Joyce Powell of Midlothian, Cynthia Ferrell of Glen Allen, and Joanne Brooks of Richmond; four sons, Lloyd Logan of Marlboro, Md., Herbert Logan of El Paso, Texas, Alexander Logan of Richmond; one sister, Florence Coleman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Perlie Logan of Lacrosse; thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at New Zion Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 1086 Beulah Rd., in Nathalie.

Frank Russell

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Frank Otto "Red" Russell, 87, of 710 Maple Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Born May 17, 1912, he was the son of Lewis Edward Russell and Sally L. Russell.

He married Rebecca B. Russell, who survives.

He was a member of the McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church, Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge #91, and Woodmen of the World Lodge #106.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Nancy Morgan of South Boston; one sister, Lucille Hobsetter of South Boston; one grandson, and two great grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2:00 p.m., at McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. W.T. Setliff, Jr. officiating. Interment icon wil follow at Oak Ridge cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends Sunday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, and will receive friends other times at the residence.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Virgial Toney

GRETNA, Va. - Virgial Woodson Toney, 77, of 104 Bailey Street, Gretna, died Saturday, December 25, 1999 in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1922 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late Samuel Woodson Toney and Tiney Leftwich Toney. He was predeceased by two brothers, Kermit Toney and Cline Toney. Mr. Toney was the owner of Toney's Cafe in Gretna and was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a member of Anderson Masonic Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M., a Navy Air Corp veteran of World War II, a life member of American Legion Post #232 and a life member of DAV Chapter 46.

He is survived by his wife Lena Walker Toney of the residence; a son Woodson Toney of Moneta; a brother, Berkley Toney of Chatham; two sisters, Elma T. Lanier of Wilmington and Doris T. Johnson of Chatham; two grandsons, Virgial W. Toney and Samuel W. Toney; one great-grandchild Ruth Ann Toney.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Dr. Edward Wright and Rev. W.D. Lilly. Burial with Masonic rites by Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 104 Bailey Street, Gretna.

Mary Wilborne

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Ford Wilborne, 81, of 1022 Robert's Trail, Halifax, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at The Woodview, South Boston.

Born Oct. 24, 1918 in Halifax Co., she was the daughter of William C. Ford and Henrietta Conner Ford.

She married E.L. "Buck" Wilborne, who survives.

She was a retired salesperson of Huff Cook Ins. Co., and a member of Dan River Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Loretta Wilborne Bryson Hailey, and one brother, John R. Ford, both of Halifax, and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Lacy Ford, David Ford, Henry Lee Ford, Noel Ford, and Stover Ford, and one sister, Lucy Ford Whitlow Bradshaw.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, at the graveside with interment following in Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mike & Loretta Hailey, 1023 Brook Run, Halifax.

Janie Compton

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Janie Elizabeth McDaniel Compton, 72, of 1035 Dove Lane, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 21, 1927, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Christopher Thomas McDaniel and Willie Mae Wallace Seamster.

She married Carl Benjamin Compton, who survives.

She was a member of The Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Women's Missionary Union.

In addition to her husband of Scottsburg, survivors include three sons, Carl Thomas Compton and Anthony Ray Compton, both of Scottsburg, and Steve Carnell Compton of Chester; one sister, Audrey M. White of Richmond; two half-sisters, Inez Bragg of Newport Richards, Fla., and Cecil Newbill of Scottsburg; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Brooks and the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Keturah Campbell

DANVILLE, Va. - Keturah (Toots) Gilbert Campbell, 74, of 109 Elwood Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her residence after two years of declining health.

Born July 26, 1925, in the Callands community, she was the daughter of Luke Gilbert and Madie Aron Gilbert.

She was married May 6, 1944, to James L. Campbell Sr., who predeceased her Jan. 16, 1986.

She lived in the Pittsylvania County and Danville community all of her life. She attended Pittsylvania County Public School and graduated from Danville Community College. She was a licensed practical nurse at Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for over 20 years until retirement. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was church organist until her health declined.

Survivors include one son, James L. (Jimmy) Campbell Jr. of Pelham, N.C.; two daughters, Donna C. Allen of Richmond and Gayle C. Gravely of Ringgold, one sister, Virginia G. Jones of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Cheryl C. Newton; one brother, Thomas Gilbert; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley and Rev. Donald Mahan officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Gayle Gravely, 444 Chaney Store Road, Mountain Hill Community.
