Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Elvin Motley

BLAIRS, Va. - Elvin Boyd Ford Motley, 83, of Belle Oak, died Sunday, January 2, 2000.
Born March 25, 1916 in Blairs, Virginia, she was the daughter of Major Latin Ford and Belle Boyd Oakes Ford.
She married Lyle Carter Motley, Sr. on November 15, 1936.
She was an active member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where she worked in the Children's Department & she helped prepare the communion for 35 years. She lived her life in Danville and in Blairs, Virginia. She was retired after 25 years from Memorial Hospital.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Sara M. Chaney of Highland Springs, and Nancy Boyd M. Cook of Charleston, S.C.; one son, Lyle C. Motley, Jr. of Delray Beach, Fla.; one brother, James Oakes Ford of Danville; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Melvin Ford, Roy Ford, and Henry Ford; one sister, Stella F. Dejarnette, and one grandson, Lyle Carter Motley, III.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Lee Elison officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel Monday, from 7-8:30 p.m., and other times at the residence.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, 1026 North Main Street, Danville, Virginia, 24540.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Geneva B. Queen

DANVILLE, Va. - Geneva B. Queen of 127 Brantley Pl. died Sunday, January 2, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born October 4, 1925 in Cleveland County, N.C. the daughter of Ada McGinnis Brackett and Yates W. Brackett.
She was married on June 7, 1945 to Thomas L. Queen, Sr. who predeceased her in 1982. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church and the Danville Christian Women's Club. She worked for Juvenile & Domestic Court Services for 33 years retiring in 1993.
She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Queen Luther of Sterling, Va. and Jane Queen of Centreville, Va.; one son Rev. Thomas Queen, Jr. and his wife Denise of Danville; two sisters Lillian Brown and Nora Hogan of Belvidere, S.C., one brother Rev. Ben Brackett of Belvidere SC; two grandchildren Linda Luther of Washington, D.C. and Bonnie L. Vega and her husband Juan of Fairfax, Va. and three great-grandchildren Rachel Vega, John Vega and Michael Vega. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a brother Jim Brackett and a sister Betty.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at 2 p.m. at North Main Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and Kyle Flora will be conducting the service. Interment icon will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the North Main Baptist Church Building Fund.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Erna Shively

DANVILLE, Va. - Erna Clark Shively, 91, formerly of 1816 Westover Drive, died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home after three months of declining health.
Born Sept. 13, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ras Clark and Quillie Ann Hyler Clark.
She married Jake Shively, who predeceased her on Dec. 21, 1981. She lived most pof her life in Pittyslvania County. She was retired from Dan River Inc., and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia S. Hyler, of Danville, and Carolyn S. White, of Keeling; three sons, Garland "Kenny" Shively of Danville, Carl D. Shively of Chatham, and C. Heyward Shively of Boones Mill; eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. O.H. Burton and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans officiating.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church, and all other times at the residence of Sylvia Hyler, 1141 Vandola Rd.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

William Wells

MARIETTA, Ga. - William Edward Wells, 82, of Marietta, Georgia, died 5 A.M. 1/1/2000 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was of the Baptist faith.
Born March 8, 1917, in Callands, Virginia, he was the son of the late Eddie Laurens Wells and Clara Reynolds Wells.
He was predeceased by his only child, Craig J. Wells, and two sisters, Adele W. Henderson and Hazel W. Lowe.
Survivors include two sisters, Cordie W. Payne of Danville and Iris W. Hall of South Boston and three brothers, Stewart S. Wells of Callands, Raleigh T. Wells of Chatham, and Rev. Clyde W. Wells of Martinsville, 10 nieces and four nephews.
For many years he made his home in Royal Oak and Troy Michigan and was a professional service representative for Smith, Kline French Pharmaceutical. He later served as a regional manager for Rachell Labs.
In 1981 he moved to Marietta, Georgia and made his home with his niece & nephew, Betty and Wallace Hundley.
Before his retirement, he was associated with Cobb county Correctional Institute in Marietta, where he counseled inmates on family problems and substance abuse.
He received a B.S. in Business Administration from Wayne State University and a Masters in Counseling and Pyschological Services from Georgia State University.
For many years he was active in Parents Without Partners (PWP). He was elected to the International Board of Directors in 1970 and while on the board, he received an appreciation award for outstanding services to single parents and their children through distinguished leadership. He continued to serve as mederator and discussion leader for PWP groups until his health declined.
The remains rest at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 N. Main Street, Danville, VA.
Funeral will be at Barker Funeral Home preached by the Rev. Clyde Wells at 2:30 PM January 5, 2000, Wednesday.
The family will receive friends after the funeral in his sister's home, Cordie W. Payne, on Franklin Turnpike.

Dorothy Bartee

DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Weadon Bartee, 62, of 1009 Brandon Court, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after seven days there and several years of declining health.
Born March 26, 1937, she was the daughter of Luther T. Weadon, who survives, and the late Irene Powell Weadon.
She married James W. “Billy” Bartee, who also survives.
She lived in Danville her entire life and was a member of The Tabernacle. She was employed with Durham Hosiery Mills for 28 years prior to retirement.
In addition to her father and husband of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Deborah P. Parsons of Danville; three sisters, Betty Jo Barber of Chesterfield County, Linda Jones and Barbara Martin, both of Danville; one brother, Luther “Junior” Weadon of Danville; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Weadon Peterson, and a brother, John Wesley Weadon.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m Thursday in Floral Hills Memory Garden with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes, the Rev. Billy Scearce and Cleo Hundley officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Janie Dance

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Janie Allen Dance, 102, of 3609 Old Halifax Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 3, 1897, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Robert Moon Allen and Marion Dunkley Allen.
She married Frank Warren Dance.
She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Frank Elbert Dance of South Boston; four daughters, Frances Evelyn Sneed of South Boston and Aurelia D. Lacy of Blacksburg, Marion D. Henderson of Halifax and Janye D. Powell of Athens, Ga.; three sisters, Elsie Drumheller of Bothell, Wash., Rosa Dickerson of Oxford, Pa., and Ethel Peek of South Boston; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Edward Day

DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Walter Day, 67, of 3965 Mount Cross Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center where he had been for one day, after the past two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 28, 1932, in Augusta, Ga., he was the son of Edward B. Day and Leatha Beverly Day.
He married Elizabeth Marie Harville Day on Aug. 28, 1951, who survives.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County. He worked 28 years at Corning Inc. in the forming dept. He was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Edward Walter Day Jr. of Axton, Barry Thomas Day and Brady Ernest Day, both of Danville; one daughter, Betsy Day Thurman of Danville; two brothers, Jimmy S. Day of Norwich, Conn., and Richard G. Day of North Augusta, S.C.; one sister, Beverly Day Smith of North Augusta, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Ronald L. Day.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John House

BROOKLYN, N.Y .- John Hoover House, 71, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Jamacia, Long Island, N.Y., after several years of declining health.
Born May 3, 1928, he was the son of John “Jack” House and Amy Wordrick House.
He spent most of his life in New York working with Atlas Moving Company.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna House of Brooklyn; one son, Franklin Sally of Chase City, Va.; two brothers, Kimmie House of Boydton, Va., and Calvin House of Oxford, N.C.; six sisters, Davline Jones of East Orange, N.J., Percell Morse, Joyce Austin, and Loretta House, all of Boydton, Va., Minister Juanita Standfield of Milton, N.C., and Bessie Simmons of Danville, Va.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Boydton, Va., with the Rev. Willie Carter officiating.
A viewing will be 6-7 p.m. Friday at Carter’s Funeral Home Chapel. Carter’s Funeral Home, Clarksville, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Ingram Jefferson

WIRTZ, Va. - Pauline Ingram Jefferson, age 61, of Wirtz, died Monday, January 3, 2000.
Born December 23, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Lee Newby, Sr. and Ida Dalton Newby.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Lee Newby, Jr. Surviving are her husband, Grover Jefferson of the home; one daughter, Sharon Brown of Chatham; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike Ingram of Glade Hill, Timothy (Bubba) and Sharon Jefferson, Tonny Jefferson, all of Wirtz; two sisters, Lissie Mae Lewis of Halifax, Thelma Lewis of South Boston; brother, Clifton Newby of South Boston; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, January 6, 2000, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Hunt III and the Rev. Albert Mosier officiating. Interment icon will follow in Liberty Christian Church cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Wednesday where the family will be from 7 until 9 p.m.
Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Cooper Terry

CHATHAM, Va. - Louise Linwood Cooper Terry, 90 years old, died peacefully on Saturday, January 1, 2000, at the High Point Presbyterian Home.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 6, 2000, at the Chatham Presbyterian Church. Graveside service and burial will follow at the Highland Burial Park in Danville.
A native of Mayesville, South Carolina, Mrs. Terry lived most of her life in Chatham with her husband and two children.
Survivors include a daughter Elizabeth Fitzgerald and her husband Dan who live in Palos Verdes Estates, California, and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Terry of High Point, North Carolina. Grandchildren are Ann C. Curry of Richmond, Virginia; Edith Tyler and Mark Tyler of San Francisco, California; Dan Fitzgerald, Jr. of Orange, California; Eugenia Fitzgerald of Champaign, Illinois; and Douglas Fitzgerald of Santa Barbara, California. Great-grandchildren are Caroline and Emily Curry and Nicholas Fitzgerald.
Her husband, Frank and her son, Frank, Jr., predeceased Mrs. Terry. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Cooper Clark and Ethel “Dicki” Cooper Turner. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Chatham Presbyterian Church.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Her family will receive friends at the Chatham Presbyterian Church following the burial.
