Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Violet Vaughan

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Violet Elise Blanks Powell Vaughan, 73, of 1017 Easley Crossing Trail died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Duke Medical Center.
Born Sept. 11, 1926, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Will Blanks and Annie Loftis Blanks.
She married Andrew Greer Vaughan, who survives.
She was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a choir member.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Brenda M. Jones of Vernon Hill; one son, William Boyce Powell of Sutherlin; two brothers, James Johnson Blanks and Dennis L. Blanks, both of South Boston; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scottsburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs and the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating.
Interment will follow in Oakland cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.

Sandra Brooks

ALTAVISTA, Va. - Sandra Louise Brooks, 44, of 1104-5th St., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Dec. 17, 1955, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Geneva Brooks, who survives and the late Earley Brooks.
She was employed at Bassett-Walker in Brookneal and was a member of New Second Buffalo Baptist Church, Nathalie.
In addition to her mother, survivors include one son, Stepfon Brooks of the residence; four brothers, Darius Brooks and Earley Brooks, both of Altavista, Wendell Brooks and Gregory Brooks, both of Hurt; paternal grandfather Clayton Brooks of Newark, Del; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at New Second Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. William Yancey officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Vernell Cox

DANVILLE, Va. - Vernell Marvin Cox, 76, of 606 Park Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of Robert Dewey Cox and Mary Neal Cox. He married Stama Matsatsos Cox, who predeceased him July 6, 1992.
He was a United States Navy veteran served during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 325 and former member of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 1002. He lived his entire life in Danville. He was an electric meter technician with the City of Danville before he retired. He also worked at Averett College in the maintenance division. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one son, Keith L. Cox of Danville; one daughter, Mary Cox Britton of Danville; three brothers, Frank Cox, Buddy Cox and Bobby Cox, all of Danville; five sisters, Ruth Hylton, Joan Campbell, Mildred Powell and Jackie Hedrick, all of Danville and Shelby Collie of Colonial Heights; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 8 Dula St.

Reuben Dixon

DANVILLE, Va. - Reuben Dixon, 72, of 154 Tate St., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 29, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Dixon and Lottie Mae Adams Dixon.
He married Carolyn Fitzgerald Dixon, who survives.
He was employed with the City of Danville for many years prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven daughters, Brenda Saunders, Martha Clark, Joan Meachem, Terry Dixon and Faye Womack, all of Danville, Margaret Dixon of Wilmington, Del. and Tammy S. Owens of Washington; three sons, Elder Samuel Dixon of Danville; Reuben Linwood Dixon of Wilmington, Del. and Marvin Dixon of Martinsville; six sisters, Thelma Waters and Josephine Terry, both of Danville, Ruth Adams of Blairs, Hilda Fitzgerald of Landover, Md., Fannie Motley of Bladensburg, Md., and Nancy Miller of Washington; 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Samuel Dixon officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

Sadie Finney

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Sadie Holley Finney, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Born Feb. 28, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Beverly H. Holley and Martha Reynolds Holley.
She married H.L. “Jack” Finney, who predeceased her.
She was a long-time resident of Martinsville. She was manager of the accessories and fine jewelry in Globman’s Department Store until her decline in health. She was nominated by Mrs. Jean Fuller and the “Daughters of the American Revolution” in 1968 for “Citizen of the Year Award. She was a life-time member of Broad Street Christian Church where she served as choir mother, Sunday School teacher, and held various offices of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
Survivors include one son, Dr. H. Ray Finney of Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, Sylvia Stadler of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Homer H. Holley and James F. Holley, both of Callands; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer H. Ashworth, Ruby H. Finney and Odessa H. Holley, all of Callands; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Broad Street Christian Church with the Dr. James Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. Monday at Norris Funeral Home Chapel and 1 p.m. Tuesday at Broad Street Christian Church.
Norris Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ricky Allen Oakes

RINGGOLD, Va. - Ricky Allen Oakes, 25, of 325 Homestead Trail, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Central Virginia Training Center, Lynchburg.
Born May 25, 1974, in Danville, he was the son of Maynard Oakes and Vicky Fannin Oakes, who survives.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his paternal grandparents, Lillian Oakes and Joe Oakes of Chatham.
A graveside funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eileen Reynolds

FINCASTLE, Va. - Eileen B. Reynolds, 83, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.
She married Thomas E. Reynolds, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and former choir member. She was former member of Botetout Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne W. Reynolds and Rodger E. Reynolds, both of Troutville, and Michael C. Reynolds of Vinton and Rodney D. Reynolds of Danville; one sister, Kathleen B. Hancock; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Richard T. Reynolds; two sisters, Louise B. Roockecharlie and Lena B. Porter; and one brother, George Black.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bonsack Baptist Church with Dr. Robert G. Moore III officiating. Burial will be in Troutville cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Oakeys North Chapel.

Delores Smith

DANVILLE, Va. - Delores Ann Cockran Tate Smith, 51, of 5225 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center where she had been for six days after 15 years of declining health.
Born Nov. 23, 1948, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Henry Purcell Cockran and Lillie Richardson Cockran, who survives.
She married James Herman Smith, who also survives.
She lived her life in the Danville area where she was a homemaker. She was of the Seventh Day Adventist faith.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Melissa Ann Canada of Rocky Mt., and Gwendalyne Denise Canada of the residence; one son, Herman Lee Canada Jr. of Woodbridge; one brother, Douglas Wayne Cockran Sr. of Danville; one half sister, Wilsie Pierce of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service at graveside will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Evangelist Lovelean Fitz officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Lillie Richardson Cockran, 1470 Claiborne St. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main is in charge of arrangements.

Rebecca Tomlin

DANVILLE, Va. - Rebecca Harmon Tomlin, 88, formerly of 227 East Thomas St., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident since April.
Born Oct. 21, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Frank Harmon and Mary Custer Harmon Brooks.
She married Ollie L. Tomlin, who predeceased Aug. 6, 1961.
She lived her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She was a faithful member of Westover Baptist Church and former member of Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Pauline T. Poovey of Ringgold, Lorene T. Hawkins of Hartford, Ky., Gracie T. Reed and Jeroline Tomlin, both of Danville, and Jackie Tomlin of Los Gatos, Calif.; two sons, Claude Tomlin of Marino Valley, Calif. and Jesse Tomlin of Danville; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bennie Poovey and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Pauline Poovey, 605 Albert Edmonds Drive, Ringgold.

Gordon Anderson
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Gordon Hodges Anderson, 79, of the 100 block of Ashley Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Danville, Va.
He graduated from Ben Franklin University in Washington D.C. He was an Officer with the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, Khedive Temple and Norview Lodge No. 113 AF & AM, and the Scottish rite bodies.
Survivors include one daughter Nancy Kathryn Lindquist of Chesapeake; and one sister Doris A. Saunders of Danville.
A graveside service with masonic rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel.

Clarence Bishop

VIRGILINA, Va. - Clarence Hubert Bishop, 90, of Hwy. 49 N, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
Born Aug. 13, 1909, he was the son of Arthur Trigg Bishop and Lula Maybelle Jones Bishop.
He married Milcie Hancock Bishop, who predeceased him.
He attended seminary in Blacksburg, and served as pastor to both High View Baptist Church and Florence Avenue Baptist Church from 1958-1976. He later served as full time pastor at Florence Avenue Baptist Church until 1981. He served as interim pastor of Amis Chapel Baptist Church where he was a member. He was a veteran of the United States Army served during World War II. He was an active member of Virgilina Masonic Lodge No. 248 and the Virgilina Ruritan Club.
Survivors include one daughter Mary Jane B. Humphries of Virgilina; four sisters Thelma B. Geiser of Vinton and Lucy May B. Correll of Orange Park, Fla., Ruby B. Kingery of Hampton and Marie Whittemore of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother Claude Arthur Bishop of Ridgeway; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother Leslie “Les” Earl Bishop and one sister, Katherine B. Sasser.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Florence Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Malvin Tuck officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
