Miss Lillie Orander

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Lillie Mae "Miss Lillie" Orander, 91, of 4425 Shady Grove Road, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several months of declining health and one day in the hospital.

Born Jan. 17, 1911, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Jesse William Mabe and Alpha Jane Syndor Mabe.

She was first married Feb. 20, 1926, to Harry Thomas Robertson, who died Dec. 8, 1961.

She was later predeceased by three additional husbands, Leslie Arnold, Edgar Newnam and Coy Orander. She had lived most of her life in the Providence community of Caswell County, where she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Dan River Primitive Baptist Church and was a member of the Pelham Senior Citizens Group and the Golden Girls.

Survivors include three sons, Billy H. Robertson and Donald G. Robertson, both of Danville, Va., and Frank D. Robertson of Providence; three daughters, Myrtle R. Saunders of Danville, Va., Robette R. Evans of Providence and Betty Lou R. Toler of Gastonia; two stepsons, Gaither Newnam of Martinsville, Va., and George Newnam of Brandon, Fla.; three stepdaughters, B.G. Pryor of Pelham, Susie White of Casville and Margaret Shannon of Walkertown; 28 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Frances Robertson; and two sons, Harry T. Robertson Jr. and Jesse W. Robertson.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with Elder Kenneth Key and the Rev. Jimmy Reaves officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pelham.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Pelham Volunteer Fire Department, the Pelham Community Center, or Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, Pelham, N.C. 27311.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy A. "Dottie" Snead

DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy A. (Dottie) Snead of 231 South Ridge Street, Heritage Towers died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at her residence.

She was born in Danville, Va., December 18, 1925, a daughter of the late William Archer Snead and Myrtle Nuckols Snead.

Miss Snead was a member of West Main Baptist Church, The Fidelis Sunday School Class, E.C.H.O. and The Tenant Association at Heritage Towers. She had attended Danville Public Schools and Averett College. Miss Snead had worked for The Grogan Oil Company and retired as bookkeeper.

She also had worked at Ray's Flower Shop and was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are two sisters: Lilly S. Goodson and Mary S. Hardy both of Danville. Two nieces: Cheryl T. Coleman of Napierville, Ill. and Meryl T. Worley of Danville. Two nephews: James Goodson, III and Charles W. Snead, Jr. both of Danville. Also several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at 2 P.M. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery by The Reverend Dr. Howard W. Lee.

The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home, Monday, June 24, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence of her niece and her husband, Meryl and Ron Worley, 218 Vicar Place.

Bernard Woodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Bernard Woodson, 67, of 164 Avalon Drive, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Stratford Health Care following one year of declining health, three weeks in the hospital and one week at Stratford Health Care.

Born May 16, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Ira Woodson and the late Mary Hawker Woodson.

He was married to Martha Nadine Clark Woodson, who died March 24, 1997. Mr. Woodson lived his entire life in Danville and the Laurel Grove community.

Prior to his retirement in 1996 he was employed with Dan River Inc. as a mechanic. He was a member of the Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and a member of the Red Oak Hollow Hunting Club.

Survivors include son and wife, Dale Woodson and Tammy R. Woodson of Danville, Va.; son and wife, Danny B. Woodson and Robin G. Woodson of Danville, Va.; one sister, Lois W. Glass of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, Roy W. Woodson of Danville, Va.; two granddaughters, Taylor Woodson and Kayla Woodson, both of Danville, Va.; one grandson and wife, Tony Woodson and Mary Sue Woodson of Dry Fork, Va.; one great granddaughter, Kara Woodson of Dry Fork, Va.; and best friend, James "Mike" Widner of Danville, Va.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at 11:00 AM at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by Elder Danny Parker, the Reverend Wayne Crews and the Reverend Walter Yancey. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the son's residence (Dale Woodson) 592 Poplar Trace.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret ‘Maggie' Foster

DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret "Maggie" Mays Foster, 90, formerly of 155 Canterbury Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Wilson Mays and Tedalou McDowell Mays.

She was married to Julian L. Foster, who predeceased her April 24, 1995. She was educated in the Boyton Public Schools and was a graduate of the Danville Memorial School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She was employed as a nursing supervisor for Danville Memorial Hospital and was employed as a nurse with Dr. C.W. Pritchett and Dr. Harry Pritchett for 25 years. She was later a nurse for the Stratford College Infirmary. She was a member of West End Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Julian L. Page Foster of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Charles William Mays and Walter Calvin Mays, both of Danville; one sister, Helen James of Newton, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by one sister, Ann Wilkerson and one brother, Herbert Mays.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at West End Christian Church with the Rev. June Haislip officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home.

The family suggest that memorials may be sent to the West End Christian Church, 130 Montague St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Mary Ellen Holley

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Ellen Oakes Holley, 93, formerly of 175 American Legion Blvd., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for one year.

Born January 25, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Calvin Oakes and Mamie Sheilds Oakes, who both predeceased her.

She was married December 25, 1927, to Russell Thomas Holley, who predeceased her February 22, 1995. Mrs. Holley lived her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where she was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for more than 65 years. She worked in the primary department and was a member of the Chapel Bible Class. Mrs. Holley was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Calvin Neal Holley Sr. and his wife Patsy of Danville and David Gene Holley of Danville; one daughter, Peggy H. Nolan and her husband Julian of Society Hill, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Sarah Holley of Danville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one son, Raymond Holley, two granddaughters, Joy Brooke Holley and Deborah Hamner, and one great-granddaughter, Holley Alford.

Mrs. Holley was the last surviving member of her generation.

The funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and at other times at 5025 Jefferson Road, home of her son, Calvin N. Holley Sr.

The family of Mary O. Holley suggests that memorial donations be made to the Joy B. Holley Scholarship Fund, 284 Mt. View Ave., Danville, VA 24541 or the Third Ave. Congregational Christian Church Building Fund, 215 Third Ave., Danville, VA 24540.

Stephen Lillard

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Stephen Allen Lillard, 31, of 1124 Lindsay St., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center due to an automobile accident on Mount Cross Road.

Born Oct. 8, 1970, in Danville, he was the son of Julian Allen Lillard and Maria Eanes Lillard.

He was married to Gwendolyn Cheryl Lillard, who survives.

He was a graduate of Tunstall High School and had worked as an auto mechanic. He was co-founder of Route 1 Bluegrass Band, which has been a regular on television for five years. He was also a member of the International Blue Grass Music Association and a distributor for Deering Banjo Co. He was a member of Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade.

Survivors include one son, Stephen Clay Lillard of Cascade; paternal grandmother, Lottie Allen Lillard of Cascade; one sister, Julie Lillard of Chester; and two stepchildren, Brooke Ray and John Luke Ray, both of Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends at 1237 Cascade Road in Cascade.

Edmond Swann Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Edmond Swann Jr., 66, of 414 Gay St., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 10, 1935, in Danville, he was the son of Edmond Swann and Ruby Brown Swann.

He was married to Evangelist Janie Swann, who survives. He was employed by Dan River Inc. prior to a decline in health.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Tina Swann Jeffrey of Danville; three sons, Barry Swann, David Swann and Jerome Swann, all of Danville; two sisters, Carolyn Swann Valentine of Danville and Edmonia Watson of Cherokee, N.Y.; two brothers, Jerry Swann of Maryland and William Swann of Roanoke; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Sylvia Swann Carrington.

A graveside service will be held noon Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Frederick William ‘Bill' Townes

DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick William "Bill" Townes, III, age 75, of 1111 Main Street, #306, Stratford House, died Tuesday morning, July 2, 2002, at his home.

Born on October 7, 1926, in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Frederick William Townes Jr. and Ruth Carter Townes.

He was married on June 28, 1952, to the former Catherine Susan Wyatt, who survives of the home. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past Saturday.

He was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a 1947 graduate of George Washington High School. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and returned to Danville to begin his career in funeral service with his father, Fred W. Townes Jr., with F. W. Townes and Son, which was founded in 1892 by his grandfather, F. W. Townes Sr. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Townes was past president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association.

He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific with the United States Navy.

Mr. Townes was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and had chaired and served on various church committees.

He was a Past President of the Danville Jaycees, Past President of the YMCA, where he also served as Chairman of the YMCA Building Committee, Past President and former director of the Danville Kiwanis Club, Past President and former director of the Danville Chamber of Commerce, and former director of the United Way.

He was a former member of the Danville Scottish Rite, ACCA Temple of the Danville Shrine Club, the Elks, Redmen and Knights of Pythias.

Mr. Townes was a former member of the Board of Trustees at Averett College, where he served as general chairman of the Capital Fund Drive in 1982.

He was a member of the Roanoke Valley Power Squadron, the Roman Eagle Lodge, No. 122, A. F. & A. M., the Danville Golf Club, American Legion Post 325, Ducks Unlimited and is current Secretary-Treasurer and past President of Wildwood Fishing Club, Inc.

He served three terms on Danville City Council, served on the Danville Planning Commission and the Danville Development Council. His life long commitment to the City of Danville is evident by his years of service and his dedication to economic development. He was active in the Danville Life Saving Crew during its early years.

Mr. Townes was an avid sailor and was known as "The Captain" of the Kay-T-Bee. He loved to hunt and fish, and was also a member of the Wildwood Hunt Club.

Mr. Townes had a life long interest for woodworking and was known as a master craftsman having learned from his friend and mentor the late Gary Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Townes Jordan.

As a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was committed to family first. In addition to his wife, Catherine "Kitty" Townes, he is survived by two sons, Frederick William "B" Townes, IV and his wife Martha of Boomer, N.C., Thomas Wyatt Townes and his wife, Cynthia of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Catherine Townes Richardson and her husband, W. Kim Richardson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; six grandchildren, Frederick William Townes, V., Charlotte Louise Townes, William Richard Cathcart, Jr., Townes Hagood Richardson, Susannah Wyatt Townes, and Catherine Miller Townes; a nephew, John M. Jordan, Jr.; and a niece, Carter Jordan Thompson.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, Wednesday, July 3, 2002, from 7:00 to 8:30.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 4, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by the Dr. Joey Faucette. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will also receive friends at the Townes' Cabin, Wildwood Lake, Thursday, July 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (may call 434-793-1211 for directions to the cabin)

The family requests that memorials be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th St., Third Floor, New York, N.Y. 10032 or to the First Baptist Church, 871 Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541.

Rev. Frank E. Washburn Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - On Sunday, June 30, 2002, Rev. Frank E. Washburn, Sr. entered into his eternal rest.

Rev. Washburn served God as a pastor for 45 years. He pastored Methodist churches for 9 years, including a three-point charge in Woolwine, VA and St. Paul's Methodist in Rocky Mount, NC. In 1955 he founded the First Methodist Temple in Danville, VA and pastored there until his retirement in 1990. During his career, he was a noted evangelist and author of numerous books.

Rev. Washburn received his T.H.B. from John Wesley College, A.B. from Lynchburg College and also attended Asbury College.

He was the son of the late Nathaniel Ira Washburn and Dora Ella Stone Washburn. His first wife, Helen Vincent Washburn, passed away in 1945. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Reed Washburn; son, Frank E. Washburn, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN; grandsons, Dr. Frank E. Washburn, III of Cleveland, OH, and Reaves Avery Washburn of Chattanooga, TN; a brother, The Rev. Burl A. Washburn of Eden, NC; a sister, Lucille Robinson of Danville, VA.

Funeral services will be at Barker Funeral Home on N. Main Street, Danville, VA on Wednesday, July 03, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. W. L. Wade officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville. The family received guests on Tuesday, July 02, 2002 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah Wiles

DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Thelma Wiles, 83, of 222 Courtland St. died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for five months.

Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Robert Hall and Willie Clark Simmons Hall.

She was married to Lonnie Purcell Wiles, who died Feb. 19, 1982. She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked for Dan River Inc. and also had worked in sales for the former G.C. Murphy Department Store. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda T. Wiles of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, George T. Wiles of Wake Forest, N.C., Thomas P. Wiles of Lincoln City, Ore., Mickey K. Wiles of Emerald Isle, N.C., and Ronnie C. Wiles of Lauderhill, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Mary H. Tate and Elizabeth H. Turpin.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Tate, 1441 Old Quarry Road, Ringgold.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Bobby Joe Williams

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Sergeant Bobby Joe Williams, retired U.S. Air Force, 65, died Monday July 1, 2002, at his residence.

Born Jan. 10, 1937, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Josey Early Williams Folkes, who survives, and Wallace Williams, who predeceased him.

He was married to Janice Stidham-Williams, who survives. He attended schools in Danville, and was a retired supervisor with the Charleston Air Force Base. He was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church in Danville.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of Summerville, include two daughters, Beth Hartness of Greensboro, N.C., and Lisa Stephenson of Summerville; two stepsons, Jeff McCormick of Chapin and Jay McCormick of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Sara Gerringer of Pelham, N.C.; and three granddaughters.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel in Summerville. Entombment will follow in Dorchester Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Summerville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Flowers may be given or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 215 East Bay Street, Suite 204 Charleston, SC 29401.
