Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Colotta Scott

DANVILLE, Va. - Colotta Rena Spencer Scott, 76, of 154 Nelson Ave. died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born May 28, 1923, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Hereford Spencer and Mattie Fulcher Spencer.
On April 15, 1950, she was married to George L. Scott, who survives.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was a retired employee of Dan River Inc. after 46 years of service in the number 4 spin room. She was an active member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Ricky Scott and his wife, Susie Scott, of Danville; two grandsons, Jacob and Sammy Scott; two sisters, Hattie S. Agee of Danville and Gracie S. Milton of Providence, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Swanson and the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment icon will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends from 7 til 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Frances Smothers

DANVILLE, Va. - Frances May Gourley Smothers, 75, of 755 6th St. died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in Riverside Health Care Center after a brief illness.
Born April 8, 1924, in Danville, she was the daughter of Wesley Gourley and Bernice Hubbard Gourley.
She was married to Leo L. Smothers, who predeceased her Oct. 28, 1983. She had lived all of her life in Danville. She retired from the former Danville Glass Company in 1985 where she was a manager and bookkeeper for a number of years. She was an active member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and was a member of the Prime Timers Group. She was also a member of the Auxillary of American Legion Post 1029 and a member of the Ballard Pruitt Post 647 Auxillary.
Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Smothers of the residence.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Lawrence Gourley.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Interment icon will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nora Terry

DANVILLE, Va. - Nora Belle Terry, 94, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 208, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1905, in Keeling, she was the daughter of John Thomas Terry and Lucinda Lewis Terry.
She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, and was an inspector for Anderson Brothers Clothing Mfg. until her retirement. She was of the Primitive Baptist Faith. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment icon will be in the Lewis Family cemetery in Keeling.
The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ernestine Thompson

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Ernestine King Thompson, 76, of 1285 Shank Drive died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 1, 1924, in North Carolina, she was the daughter of Lawrence A. and Annie Bell Guiton Culbreth.
She was first married to Wayne King, who predeceased her, and then to Conrad W. Thompson, who survives. She graduated from Schoolfield High School in Danville and was a medical secretary for Drs. Nipe and Schultz. She was involved in volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society and Friendship House. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Laura Myse and Matthew B. King of Fredericksburg, Joseph A. King of Waynesboro, and Jonathan W. King of Richmond; one sister, Jean C. Young of Danville, and 17 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Catherine Longenecker officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Lindsey Funeral Home.

John Tucker

NEWBURG, N.Y. - John Leroy Tucker, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Putnam Nursing Center in Holmes.
Born Sept. 30, 1921, he was the son of Rev. Jonas and Nancy Tucker.
He was a native of Caswell County and was educated in the Caswell County public schools.
Survivors include two daughters, Marion and Marionette Tucker Hall of Danville, Va.; one step-daughter, Edna Bethel of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Laura Tucker of Milton, N.C. and Anna Tucker of the Bronx, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Street Baptist Church in Milton, N.C. Interment icon will be in Milton City cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon-8 p.m. Monday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

Lenora Jones

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Lenora Haynes Jones, 85, of 5 Colony Court, and formerly of 220 Brandon Court, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, after a brief illness.
Born June 8, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eameron Rison Haynes and Minnie Yeatts Haynes.
She was married to Ernest F. Jones, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker, before moving to the Kings Grant Presbyterian Retirement Community in Martinsville in 1997. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Ernest F. Jones Jr. of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; three brothers, George V. Haynes of Red Springs, N.C., Elvin M. Haynes of Danville and Maurice B. Haynes of Graham, N.C.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr. officiating. Interment icon will follow in Mountain View cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Tim and Candy Younger, 7784 Martinsville Hwy., Danville.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willie May Moorman

ROANOKE, Va. - Willie May Moorman, 71, or Roanoke passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000.
Born May 30, 1928, she was the daughter of Vaden and Ida Moorman of Chatham.
She was a member of Bold Springs A.M.E. Church in Chatham, and then at Mt. Zion A.M.E. and Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Roanoke. She was President of the Missionaries and served on the stewardess board of Mt. Zion and Ebenezer. She was a member of the Trustee Board of Ebenezer and the Virginia Lay Organization.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Naomi J. Moorman; one brother, Samuel B. Moorman.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth M. Tyree of Roanoke, two nephews and four nieces.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer A.M.E Church.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Serenity Funeral Home in Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Williams

CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Sue Yeatts Williams age 85 of 5232 Climax Road Chatham, Virginia died Saturday, February 19, 2000 in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Williams was born April 6, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Archer Lafayette Yeatts and the late Elizabeth Blair Yeatts.
Her husband Jesse Anderson Williams predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Sue W. Pruitt of Chatham and one son, Joseph H. Williams of Chatham; one brother, Archer L. Yeatts, Jr. of Richmond; one sister, Ann Y. Pulliam of Louisville, KY, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
One son, Jesse Donald Williams, and one brother, Comer V. Yeatts, predeceased her.
She was a faithful member of Greenpond Baptist Church and was a member of the W.M.U.
She was a graduate of Radford College and was a retired teacher in Pittsylvania County and taught school at Dan River, Callands, Climax, and Gretna Elementary Schools.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Morgan Johnson Chapter #44 order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday from the Greenpond Baptist Church by Rev. John McCray and Rev. James G. Bullock, Jr.
Interment will be in the Greenpond Baptist Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 Monday February 21, 2000 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her son Joe Williams, 880 Climax Road, Chatham, VA.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Greenpond Baptist Chuch Building Fund or the Climax Vol. Fire Department.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

C.L. Carter

DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Lee (C.L.) Carter Jr., 71, of 310 Parkland Drive, died on February 22, 2000, at his residence after 8 months of declining health.
Born January 27, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Lee Carter Sr. and Jessie Gibbs Carter, who both predeceased him.
He was married to Elizabeth Frances Wyatt Carter on June 30, 1951, who survives.
Mr. Carter had lived most of his life in Danville where he had worked for Blackwell Motor Company in the parts department until his retirement in 1993. He served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines as sergeant with the Military Police.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Victor Allan Carter of Blairs, Va., Baron Lee Carter of Danville; two sisters, Ernestine C. Adkins of Danville, Thelma C. Turner of Roanoke; and one granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Carter, Frank Carter and Jack Carter.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son Baron Lee Carter, 201 Evergreen Place, Danville.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Polly H. Sawyers Hawkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Polly H. Sawyers Hawkins, age 95, of 614 Park Avenue, and formerly of 619 Southampton Avenue, died Monday evening February 21, 2000 at the Stratford Health Center, after a year of declining health.
Mrs. Hawkins was born near Climax in Pittsylvania County on October 10, 1904, a daughter of the late Pegram Hayden and Molly P. Scruggs Hayden. She was first married to Carl E. Sawyers who predeceased her, and later married Martin T. Hawkins who also predeceased her.
Mrs. Hawkins had spent most of her life in Danville where she was a nurses aide at Danville Regional Medical Center for 15 years before retiring at the age of 62. She attended the former Southall Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Davis Hayden, Garnett Hayden, Jack Hayden, and Kip Hayden, and also predeceased by five sisters, Anna H. McGhee, Grace Hayden, Inez Mims, Lelia Hayden, and Eddie Davidson.
Survivors include one daughter: Beatrice Sawyers Combs of Danville, and one sister: Sallie Riddle of Chatham, and two step daughters: Marie Stewart of Danville and Ruth Jean Norris of Jacksonville, N.C., and one granddaughter, Angela Combs of Danville, and five step grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Robert Vermillion and Rev. Roy Newton. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence, 614 Park Avenue.
