Zonius Fitzgerald

DANVILLE, Va. -- Zonius Fitzgerald, 72, of 859 Lee St., died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 9, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas Fitzgerald and Rentha Ferguson Fitzgerald.
He was married to Rowena Carter Fitzgerald, who survives. He was a member of Guildfield Baptist Church and was an employee of Dan River Mills prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three daughters, Ruby F. Carter and LaVerne Fitzgerald, both of Danville and Brenda M. Motley of Greensboro, N.C.; five sons, Wayne Fitzgerald of Manhattan, N.Y., Alvis Fitzgerald of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Carl T. Fitzgerald and Charles Fitzgerald, both of Greensboro and Dennis Fitzgerald of Danville; two sisters, Charlotte Adams of New Haven, Conn. and Monzelle Adams of Manhattan; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Guildfield Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Jeffress

DANVILLE, Va. -- Lois Moore Jeffress, 90, formerly of 231 South Ridge St., died Friday, April 28, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center, after six months of declining health.
Born Nov. 9, 1909, in Prattville, Ala., she was the daughter of Edward H. Moore and Dora Maddox Moore.
She lived most of her life in Danville, and was a nurses assistant at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Jeffress Whitaker of Trinity, N.C.; one brother, Allen E. Moore of Danville; two sisters, Mabel Moore Anderson and Thelma Moore Young, both of Danville; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Woodrow Giles officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Hester McCain

DANVILLE, Va. - Hester McCain, 89, of 200 Chatelaine Ave., died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 14, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Felix McCain and Willie Law McCain.
She was self-employed.
Survivors include three daughters, Juanita M. Florence and Alice J. Moore, both of Danville and Mamie L. Coleman of Burlington, N.C.; three brothers, Eddie McCain of Greensboro, N.C., Henry McCain of Danville and Daniel McCain of Washington; two sisters, Frances McCain and Louvinia Holmes, both of Washington; 32 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church, with Rev. Gregory Hopkins officiating. Interment icon will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends at the residence.

Virginia Oliver

TURBEVILLE, Va. - Virginia Wilkins Oliver died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 23, 1901 in Turbeville, she was the daughter of Addison E. and Lee Foster Wilkins.
She was married to James Edward Oliver Jr., who predeceased her.
She was educated at Chatham Hall and Queen's College in Charlotte, N.C, with graduate work at the University of Virginia. Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher and director of Home Economics in Halifax County. She was listed in "Who's Who of American Women" for her civil and religious work. She was President of the Women of the Church of Appomattox Presbytery.She was President of the South Boston Women's Club, Regent of the Berryman Green Chapter of the DAR and President of the Suzanne Rochet Chapter of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Va. She established a Rural Youth Center and was Chairman of the Scholarship Committee at Halifax County High School. She was a lifetime member of the Jamestown Society.
Survivors include two sons, James Edward Oliver III of Turbeville and Addison Wilkins Oliver of Turbeville; one daughter, Virginia Lee "Ginny" McCraw of Lynchburg, Va; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Elbert Williamson officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the residence. Powell Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Robert Tucker

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Robert Barnhardt "Bonnie" Tucker, 82, died Friday, April 28, 2000 in the Brian Center.
Born July 1, 1917, in Halifax County, he was a son of Coan Jackson Tucker and Hattie Moon Tucker.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, a member of Straightstone Baptist Church, and a retired employee of Klopman.
Survivors include two sisters, Fleda Pugh of Gretna and Mamie Layne of Long Island, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Brace Tucker, Charlie Tucker, Theo Tucker and Owen Tucker; and three sisters, Mattie Layne, Marie Clarke and Janie White.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday from Straightstone Baptist Church, with Rev. James Manuel officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the residence of David Tucker, 981 Gallows Road, Gretna.

Mary Williams

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Woody Williams, 92, of 1120 Cherry Hill Road, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at her residence.
She was born June 10, 1907 in Halifax County.
Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Williams of South Boston, and one sister-in-law, Louberta Woody of Norfolk, Va.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday from William Temple CME Church, with the Rev. George Brown officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and at the residence.
Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Berkeley Wood Anderson

DANVILLE, Va. - Berkeley Wood Anderson, 106, of 2526 North Main Street, died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, after two years of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle for 2 years.
Born March 6, 1894 in Keeling, she was the daughter of George Washington Wood and Lucy Bailey Wood.
She was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Danville. She was a resident of Bradenton, Florida from 1953 to 1985 before returning to Holiday Village in Danville, Va. She moved to Roman Eagle Memorial Home in April of 1998. She retired from Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida where she worked as a nurse.
She was married to Jesse Churchhill Anderson on Nov. 26, 1913. He predeceased her on Oct. 29, 1967.
Survivors include one son, Richard G. Anderson and one daughter-in-law, Helen Anderson, both of Richmond; one daughter, Edith A. Spears of Virginia Beach; four granddaughters, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Lewis Harris officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oakridge cemetery, South Boston, Va.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel

Randolph Andrews

BLAIRS, Va. - Randolph Carson "Randy" Andrews, 53, of Route 29, died April 29, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 13, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Donald Andrews and Mary East Andrews. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Andrews of Danville, Tony Andrews of Pelham, N.C. and William King of Danville; one daughter, Lisa A. Glore of Cornelia, Ga.; three brothers, J.T. Andrews of Greensboro, N.C., Wayne Andrews of Halifax and Ralph Andrews of Blairs; four sisters, Joan Crowder of Halifax, Raye Henderson of Vernon Hill, Peggy Walker and Ruby Betterton, both of South Boston; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Ollis Andrews and one sister, Alease Stephens.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment icon will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday evening.

Buck Dix

STERLING, Va. - John E. "Buck" Dix, 63, of Richland Acres, died April 29, 2000 at the Hospice of Northern Virginia in Arlington, Va., after several months of declining health.
Born May 20, 1936 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Julius P. Dix and Betty Green Long Dix.
He was married to Marion "Jo" Walters Dix, who survives. He grew up in the Mountain Hill Community prior to moving to northern Virginia and making his residence in the Sterling area for the past 25 years. Prior to his retirement, he was a brickmason with the Architect of the Capitol in Washington. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife if the residence, he is survived by three sons, Robin Dix of Paw Paw, W.Va., Terry Dix of Sterling and Tim Dix of Springfield; one daughter, Penny D. Serva of Winchester; one step-son, Danny Walters of Leesburg; one step-daughter, Donna Walters of Leesburg; two brothers, Claude Dix and Theodore Dix, both of Danville; six sisters, Mary Ellen D. Pruitt, Mamie D. Hawker and Dorothy Ann D. Davis, all of Ringgold, Inez D. Piggott of Danville, Ina D. Farthing and Martha D. Cassidy, both of Providence, N.C.; six grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Linwood R. Dix and one sister, Thelma D. Bailey.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Edward Simpson officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Dorothy Ann Davis, 2353 Miller Drive, in the Mountain Hill Community.

Nannie Withers

DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Withers, 85, of 835 Colquohoun St., died Friday, April 28, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 25, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Graves and Rachel Davis Graves.
She was married to Lorenza Withers, who predeceased her. Prior to her retirement, she was an employee at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn L. Walton of Danville; one son, Len Withers of Danville; and several grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home, with Dr. J.P. Griffith officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 822 Coles St.

Susie Andrews

DANVILLE, Va. - Susie Dunn Andrews, 84, of 169 Rocklawn Ave., died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Rhinaldo Dunn and Lucie Cole Dunn.
On Dec. 27, 1938, she was married to Edwin Randolph Andrews, who predeceased her Dec. 5, 1993. She lived her entire life in the Danville area where she was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Edwin Jack Andrews of Danville; two daughters, Loretta A. Stowe of Axton and Betty Carol A. King of Danville; one sister, Frances D. Fredrick of Berlin, Md.; one brother, Frank E. Dunn of Richmond; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Julian W. Dunn, John L. "Jack" Dunn and George Clifton Dunn.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Alan Holder officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.
