Thelma Winstead

DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Miles Winstead, 90, of 1625 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center following two months of declining health and three days in the hospital.

Born June 3, 1912, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Rufus Miles and Lucy Seay Miles.

She was married Sept. 3, 1938, to Keith Lea Winstead, who predeceased her Aug. 15, 2001. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Faith Circle and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She lived her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked as a Lab Technician.

Survivors include one son, Richard L. Winstead of Fort Smith, Ark.; one daughter, Beth Winstead Gentry of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Design United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Shepherd and the Rev. Carolyn Winstead officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence of Beth W. Gentry, 132 Northridge Drive in Danville.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Grace Design United Methodist Church, 1064 Franklin Turnpike, Danville or Camp Selah, Cornerstone Ministries, c/o Carolyn C. Winstead, 620 E. Hightower Road, Sutherlin, Va., 24594.

Mel Battle II

GRAHAM, N.C. - Mel Ott Battle II, 26, of 1089-G Ivey Road, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, N.C. He was born July 27, 1975, in Danville, Va. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Ott Battle and the late Clydia S. Battle.

He attended Caswell County Public Schools and graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1993. He attended North Carolina A&T State University and was employed by DANA Corp., Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Burlington, N.C.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Ott Battle of Yanceyville, N.C.; one daughter, Essence Clydae Battle of Burlington, N.C.; one son, Jordan Alston Battle of the home; a fiancee, TaNeba Enoch of Graham, N.C.; two brothers, Erik Battle, USMC, New River, N.C. and Sherrard Battle, Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters, Mellotta Battle Hill (Artis), Fayetteville, N.C. and Erika Whitted of Leasburg, N.C.; a paternal grandmother, Edna M. Battle, Goldsboro, N.C.; and a paternal grandfather, Othaniel Battle, Clinton, Md.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Caswell County Civic Center, Yanceyville, N.C. with the Rev. Larry Covington officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2002 at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, 734 Apple Street, Burlington, N.C. and at other times at his parents' residence, 618 Melvin Wrenn Road, Yanceyville, N.C.

Reva Brown

DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Reva Williams Brown, age 86, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Mrs. Brown was born in Danville, Va. on May 28, 1916, a daughter of the late Paul Douglas Williams and Ola Ramsey Williams Carter.

She was married to Harold "Bill" Brown who predeceased her in 1999.

Mrs. Brown was a retired Supervisor with C&P Telephone Company.

She was a member of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church where she was a former choir member and Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Home Extension Club in Chatham, Va.

In addition to her husband, and parents, Mrs. Brown was predeceased by a brother, Hassell Williams.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet B. Adkins of Danville; a sister, Polly Gibner of Halifax, Va.; a grandson, Michael Adkins of Danville; two great-grandchildren, Janie Adkins and Blake Adkins both of Danville.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lewis Swartzbaugh.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will be at the residence of her daughter at 4536 Franklin Turnpike.

Mozelle Farthing

DANVILLE, Va. - Mozelle Farson Farthing, 81, of 165 Third Avenue, died June 9, 2002, at the residence following several years of declining health.

Born June 6, 1921, in Java, Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Thomas Farson and the late Lottie Smith Farson.

She was married December 28, 1938, to Eugene Thomas Farthing. Mrs. Farthing has spent most of her life in Danville. She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church where she taught in the Beginners Department for many years and she was a member of the 3rd Circle #2.

Survivors include one daughter, Judith Alderson and husband Wayne Alderson, both of Danville, Va.; son, Sherrill Farthing and wife Billye Farthing, both of Blairs, Va.; son, Darrell Farthing and wife Marcia Farthing, both of Danville, Va.; grandchildren; Brian Alderson, Shana Turner, Gena Guill, Sherrice Payne, Marcus and Brittney Farthing; great-Kenny Wayne Turner, Emily Guill, and Raymond Buckner.

She was predeceased by brothers, James Farson and Basil Farson; and sisters, Alpha F. Tucker, Perdita F. Williams and Irma F. Reynolds.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m., June 11, 2002, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence, 165 Third Avenue, Danville, Va.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha Shorter Pickard

SOPHIA, N.C. - Mrs. Bertha Shorter Pickard, 94, formerly of 3277 Farlow Pines Drive, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at the Graybrier Nursing Center. She was born December 26, 1907, in Roanoke, VA, daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Collins Shorter. On November 24, 1933, she married Robert A. Pickard who preceded her in death in 1966. A sister; Mae Kirks and brother, Bud Shorter, and grandson William Robert Taylor also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Cecile P. Farlow and husband Max of Sophia, Belva Jo Leonard of Acworth, GA, brothers; Robert Shorter of Virginia Beach, VA, Edward Shorter and Oscar Shorter both of Danville, sisters; Frances Tolley, Beulah Webb, Ruby Wiggins, Hattie Reese, all of Danville and Goldie Morris of Blanch, NC. Six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren also survive her.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Marlboro Friends Meeting with Rev. Buddy Fox and Pastor John Sides officiating. Burial will follow in Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8:00 PM Monday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and other times at the home of Max and Cecile Farlow, 3277 Farlow Pines Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pine Grove Baptist Church, 6308 Checker Road, High Point, 27263 or Marlboro Friends Meeting, 2668 Marlboro Church Road, Sophia, NC 27370.

Lora "Polly" Stroud

PELHAM, N.C. - Lora "Polly" Mize Stroud, 80, of 575 Lovelace Road, died 11:24 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1921, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Willie Ambra Mize and May Parson Mize.

She was married Feb. 13, 1943, to Harvey H. Stroud, who survives. She worked for Dan River Inc. prior to her retirement and spent most of her time in the Pelham community and was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph McGuire of Eufaula, Ala., and Douglas Stroud of Greensboro; one daughter, Mary "Libbi" Oakes of Greensboro; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Bob Fritts and the Rev. Darryl F. Brummett officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Goodson Adams

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Goodson Adams, 97, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born July 1, 1905, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of John David Goodson and Betty Lou Jackson Goodson.

She had lived all her life in the Danville area. She was formerly employed by Dan River Inc. She was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was married to Curtis Jefferson Adams, who predeceased her on May 4, 1975.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.

The family will receive friends at her niece's residence, Patricia Glenn, 495 West Main St.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or Mount Hermon Baptist Church Building Fund, 4385 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.

Hattie Gentry

McMillian Bray

CASCADE, Va. - Hattie Gentry McMillian Bray, 87, formerly of 293 Marlin Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center after four years of declining health and one month at the center.

Born July 25, 1915, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Samuel J. McMillian and Flora Simpson McMillian, who predeceased her.

She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker.

She was married to David Johnson Bray on Dec. 2, 1932. He predeceased her Jan. 12, 2003.

She is survived by one son, David S. Bray of Danville; four daughters, Hazel B. Lewis of Rowland, N.C., Louise B. Ingram of Virginia Beach, Shirley B. Webb of Clintwood, and Elsie B. Powell of Cascade; 13 grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Darryl Wayne Bray and a granddaughter, Patty Williams.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bray Family Cemetery, with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times, they will be at the residence of her son, David S. Bray, 8993 Mount Cross Road, Danville.

Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Barts Buchanan

MEBANE, N.C. - Edna Barts Buchanan, 87, of 1055 Airport Road, Apt. 227, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center after several years of declining health and two weeks in critical condition.

She was born in Caswell County, N.C., a daughter of Gattis Barts and Lillie Cobb Barts.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Yanceyville.

She was married to Van Buchanan, who predeceased her.

She is survived by three daughters, Jerlene (Jerri) Knight of Mebane, Melinda Faye Hyman of Summerville, S.C. and Judy Bateman of Graham; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Briggs officiating. Interment will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Jerri Knight, 301 Mattress Factory Road, Mebane.

Willard Fansler

BASYE, Va. - Willard Fansler, 86, of 1099 Orkney Grade, Basye, Va., died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Fansler was born December 4, 1916, in Orkney Springs, son of the late George David and Laura Basye Fansler.

He was a graduate of Shepherdstown College in Shepherdstown, W.Va. and had been a school teacher in Shenandoah County. In 1941 he became a U.S. Marshall and was a U.S. Probation Officer from 1944 to 1975. In 1962, while still a probation officer in Roanoke, he founded Blue Ridge Truss and Supply in Basye of which he was the owner and President.

Mr. Fansler was a member of Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ at Basye and the Mount Jackson Masonic Lodge, No. 103, A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Fansler is survived by his wife, Vondrea Melton Fansler, whom he married on January 24, 1981. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles David Fansler and Danielle Burruss Fansler and his grandchildren, Ostara, Suzanna, Charles and Jimmy Fansler, all of Basye; a stepson, Richard Martin and granddaughter, Jennifer Martin of Martinsville. He also leaves behind his special friend, Larry Ryan.

He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Eunice and Mervin Funkhouser.

The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orkney Springs with the Rev. G. William Nabers and the Rev. John H. Ware officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ Cemetery at Basye.

Pallbearers will be Tim Ryan, Gary Coffman, Randy Helsley, Charlie Fravel, Sidney Dinges, Dexter Mumaw, Lester Miller and David Cline.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Fansler, Nelson Fansler, Charles Fravel and employees of Blue Ridge Truss and Supply.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orkney-Basye Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 68, Basye, VA 22810 or SEARCH, Inc., 5215 Boxwood Drive, Mount Jackson, VA 22842.

Mr. Fansler was a well-known and respected businessman and supporter of the community. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Robert L. Gregory

RINGGOLD, Va. - Robert L. Gregory, 36, of 2932 Ringgold Depot Road, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Fort Walton Beach, Florida, after having a heart attack.

Born Feb. 11, 1966, in Quantico, Va., he was a son of Paul M. Gregory and Eliane E. Gregory.

He lived all of his life in Ringgold with his family and friends.

He is survived by a brother, Paul M. Gregory of Keeling and a sister, Mary E. Vaden of Atlanta, Ga.

He was predeceased by a brother, Richard D. Gregory.

The family may receive friends at a later date.

Dorothy Stone Hairston

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Dorothy Stone Hairston, 67, of 300 Greenview Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at her residence.

Born June 7, 1935, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Constance Stone and Lucy Martin Stone Lampkin.

She was a homemaker.

She was married to Bishop C.W. Hairston, who survives.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Simon of Atlanta, Ga. and Tammy Michelle Perry of Raleigh, N.C.; five sons, Charles W. Hairston, Christopher Hairston, Roger D. Hairston, Constance Hairston and Jeffrey Scott Hairston, all of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Mary Reid and Mildred Moore, both of Detroit, Mich.; one brother, Silvern Stone of Martinsville and numerous grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church, 938 Brookdale Street, Martinsville, with Bishop Leroy Canady officiating. Interment will follow in the Hairston Family Cemetery in Cascade.

A viewing will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Jerusalem Way of the Cross Church Apostolic Faith, Apostolic Corner, Rocky Mount.
