John Ed Jennings

HURT, Va. - Voil Mitchell (John Ed) Jennings, age 78, died Friday, June 9, 2000 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was born April 26, 1922 in Pittsylvania County and was a son of the late Avery T. Jennings and Nannie Lou Hines Jennings. He was also predeceased by six brothers and two sisters, Cliff Jennings, Jack Jennings, Witcher Jennings, Reed Jennings, Paul Jennings, Randolph Jennings, Mittie Eanes and Audrey Albeck. He was married to the late Margie Jacobs Jennings.

He retired from Burlington Industries, Klopman Division as a Supervisor with over 35 years of service. He was a member of Monte Vista Baptist Church and a former Noble Grand of the Staunton River Lodge IOOF 403. This Lodge has now consolidated with the Brookneal Lodge IOOF 267.

Survivors include many loving nieces and nephews which include Cynthia Gunter Shields, Catherine Gunter Doss, both of Gretna, and Sharon Lynn Jennings of Evington and a special friend Bertha Lanier Epperson of Hurt.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Graveside rites by Brookneal Lodge IOOF 267 will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence 1582 Grit Road, Hurt.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14 Gretna, Va. 24557, or Altavista Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 1, Altavista, Va. 24517.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of the arrangements.

Eva Lewis

CHATHAM, Va - Eva Shelton Lewis, 87, died Friday, June 9, 2000 at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 29, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry Clay Shelton and Eulalia Terry Shelton.

She was married to Lynwood W. Lewis, who predeceased her. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.

Survivers include two step-children, Clara Motley of Chatham and Clyde Lewis of Sparks, Nev.; one sister, Eda S. Towler of Danville; two brothers, Hugh Shelton and Edward Shelton, both of Chatham; six step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Darrell Campbell and the Rev. Harold Lewis officiating. Interment icon will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home.

Mildred Pritchett

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Adkins Pritchett, 78, of 3112 Westover Drive died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at her residence after six months of declining health.

Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Benjamin Fred Adkins and Lucy Wilkinson Adkins.

She was married to John Leonard Pritchett, who predeceased her in 1979.

She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County where, prior to her retirement, she was employed with Dan River Inc. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret A. Hill of Danville.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Oliver Tucker

WILMINGTON, Del. - Ralph Oliver Tucker, 73, died Monday, June 5, 2000 at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 17, 1925 in Roanoke.

He was married to Everlean Miller Tucker, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Wilmington, Del., survivors include two daughters, Darlene Taylor and Earnell Hudson, both of Wilmington, Del.; two sons, Matthew Miller and Timothy Miller, both of Wilmington, Del.; one brother, Lewis Tucker of Roanoke, Va.; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cluster Pines Holiness Church in Gretna, Va. Interment icon will be in the Barbour Family cemetery in Nathalie, Va., with Bishop Anthony Miller officiating.

The remains will lie in state at the church immediately following the morning worship services.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mrs. Virgie Tucker, 15501 E. Gretna Road, Gretna.

Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services of Halifax are in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Waller

NATHALIE, Va. - Gladys Ozelia Walker Waller, 73, of 1216 Chestnut Road died Friday, June 9, 2000 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1927 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walter Oscar Walker and Ethel Lee Walker Walker. She was married to Woodman Ford Waller who predeseased her. She was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church of Christ.

Survivers include five daughters, Janice Moore, Shelby W. Powell, Deborah W. Moorefield, Sylvia W. Layne and Donna W. Ward, all of Nathalie; three sons, Jimmy and Roger Waller, both Nathalie and Dwight Waller of Turbeville; three brothers, Artie S. Walker of Chester, and Bert and Phillip Walker, both of Nathalie; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Waller; one son, Oscar "Pete" Waller, and one brother, Donald Walker.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son Jimmy Waller, 2009 Chestnut Road, Nathalie.

Rebecca R. Wright

HYATTSVILLE, Md. - Rebecca R. Wright, formerly of Hyattsville, Md., and Danville, Va., died Thursday, June 8, 2000.

Born in Virginia, January 23, 1906 in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Calhoun and Lucie Thomas Roach. Beloved sister of Helen Wortman Brennan; aunt of Leon Wortman, Joan Hoyl, Mary Alice Pastore, Patricia Grodin and the late Betty Jean Mulcare. Also survived by numerous relatives and friends.

Friends may call at Gasch's Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, Md., on Sunday, June 11, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Services will be held at the Little Church of Fort Lincoln cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, Md., on Monday, June 12, 2000 at 11 a.m.

Interment Fort Lincoln.

Roslyn Harris

CHATHAM, Va. ­ Roslyn Blair Harris, 69, of 129 Beverly Hts. Road, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 3, 1931 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Willard Blair and Gladys Wright Blair.

She was married to Robert F. Harris, who survives. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Ellen H. Petty of Chatham and Wendy H. Loflin of Evington; one son, Garry Dale Harris of Chatham; one sister Elizabeth B. Jones of Chatham; one brother, Thomas J. Blair of Chatham; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Concord United Methodist Church with the Darrell Campbell officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday from Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Hylton Nowlin "Hoss" Hyler

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Hylton Nowlin "Hoss" Hyler, 86, of 305 Grays Park Road, Danville VA died Saturday, June 10, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health. He has been a patient in the hospital for three days.

Born October 24, 1913 in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, he was the last surviving sibling of Peter S. Hyler and Lucy Nowlin Hyler. He was married to Mozelle Gray Hyler, July 27, 1940, who predeceased him on June 12, 1996. He lived all of his life in the Brosville community, except for his service with the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He participated in action against the enemy at Okinawa from April 1, 1945 to July 2, 1945, and was honorably discharged as a Line Corporal on May 2, 1946. He worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 36 years as a motor grader operator and highway foreman and retired in 1976. He was a life long fan and supporter of baseball and played for Bachelors Hall for many years.

He is survived by his daughter Frances Elizabeth "Woodie" Hyler Hardy and his son-in-law the Rev. Robert F. Hardy, IV. Also grandchildren and spouse's of Danville, Robert F. Hardy, V and Kendra K. Hardy, F. LeAnne Hunt and Jay, Nowlin Hyler Hardy, and Robyn E. Hardy of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The last years of his life he derived much pleasure from his great-grandsons, Jake Hardy, Jacob Hyler Hardy, James B. Hunt, III, and Robert F. Hardy, VI.

Services will be held by the Rev. R.F. Hardy, III, the Rev. Bill Soyars, and the Rev. R. F. Hardy, IV, on Monday, June 12, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel. Interment icon will be at the family cemetery at Grays Park.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel and at other times at his residence, 305 Grays Park Road.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Brosville Volunteer Fire Department. Memorials may be addressed to the Fire Department Chief, 1131 Mallard Lake Drive, Danville, Va., 24541.

Clyde Terry

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Clyde Leonard Terry, 89, of 1402 Westover Drive, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center after four years of declining health. He had lived at the center for three and a half years.

Born Oct. 28, 1910 in Sandy River, he was a son of Elridge Preston Terry and Abby Adkins Terry.

He was married to Nell Inman Terry on Aug. 3, 1929. She survives.

He spent most of his life in the Westover Hills community. He was a self-employed truck driver and a member of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his generation.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Russell P. Terry of Danville; two daughters, Anne Marie Terry Moss and Martha Terry Childers, both of Danville; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Johnny Jones and Pastor Jack Waddell officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

John Darby

BLAIRS, Va. ­ John Darby, 82, of 535 Deerwood Drive, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born July 4, 1917, in Gastonia, N.C., he was a son of Sumpter Darby and Jessie Minter Darby.

He was married to Elizabeth Leona Voss Darby, who survives. He was a truck driver for Giant Foods prior to his retirement. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

Survivors include five daughters, Irene Mobley of Prince George County, Md., Catherine Chandler of Danville, Lucy Chandler of Merced, Calif., and Marcia and Janet Darby, both of Blairs; one son, William Bowe of Danville; two sisters, Sarah Darby and Barbara Bullock, both of Washington; four brothers, David Minter of Prince George County, Md., and James, Oren and Ernest Darby, all of Washington; and several grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and at other times at the residence.

Roslyn Harris

CHATHAM, Va. ­ Roslyn Blair Harris, 69, of 129 Beverly Hts. Road, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 3, 1931 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Willard Blair and Gladys Wright Blair.
