Hylton Nowlin "Hoss" Hyler

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Hylton Nowlin "Hoss" Hyler, 86, of 305 Grays Park Road, Danville VA died Saturday, June 10, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health. He has been a patient in the hospital for three days.

Born October 24, 1913 in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, he was the last surviving sibling of Peter S. Hyler and Lucy Nowlin Hyler. He was married to Mozelle Gray Hyler, July 27, 1940, who predeceased him on June 12, 1996. He lived all of his life in the Brosville community, except for his service with the United States Marine Corp during World War II.

He participated in action against the enemy at Okinawa from April 1, 1945 to July 2, 1945, and was honorably discharged as a Line Corporal on May 2, 1946. He worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 36 years as a motor grader operator and highway foreman and retired in 1976. He was a life long fan and supporter of baseball and played for Bachelors Hall for many years.

He is survived by his daughter Frances Elizabeth "Woodie" Hyler Hardy and his son-in-law the Rev. Robert F. Hardy, IV. Also grandchildren and spouse's of Danville, Robert F. Hardy, V and Kendra K. Hardy, F. LeAnne Hunt and Jay, Nowlin Hyler Hardy, and Robyn E. Hardy of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The last years of his life he derived much pleasure from his great-grandsons, Jake Hardy, Jacob Hyler Hardy, James B. Hunt, III, and Robert F. Hardy, VI.

Services will be held by the Rev. R.F. Hardy, III, the Rev. Bill Soyars, and the Rev. R. F. Hardy, IV, on Monday, June 12, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel. Interment icon will be at the family cemetery at Grays Park.

The family received friends Sunday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times at his residence, 305 Grays Park Road.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Brosville Volunteer Fire Department. Memorials may be addressed to the Fire Department Chief, 1131 Mallard Lake Drive, Danville, Va., 24541.

Josephine Swann

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Josephine S. Swann, 72, of 745 Old Mayfield Road, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 15, 1928, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Rufus Swann and Adabell Roberson Swann.

She was married to Chris T. Swann, who predeceased her. She was a housewife and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Mabel L. Hairston of Danville and Mary Lemma Morton of Maryland; and one brother, Henry Albert Swanson of Danville.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Shady Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stacy Frazier officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Teamer

DANVILLE, Va. ­ Gladys Leo Hunt Teamer, 70, of 337 Kent St., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 10, 1929, in Norfolk, she was a daughter of Wilbert J. Hunt and Irmalee L. Hooper.

She was married to Joe Teamer, who survives. She was a rater for Continental Insurance Co.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by her mother of Danville.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. J.P. Griffith officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

A viewing will take place from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and the family will receive friends at the residence.

Patsy Barker

RINGGOLD, Va. - Patsy Marshall Barker, 57, of 213 Homestead Trail, died Tuesday, June 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a five-day stay in the hospital.

Born Dec. 26, 1942, in Danville, she was a daughter of Clement Elmore Marshall and Cora Lancaster Marshall.

On April 4, 1970, she was married to John H. "Johnny" Barker, who survives. She lived all of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was empolyed by the Pittsylvania County School Sysytem where she served as the cafeteria manager for several years at Dan River Middle School before becoming cafeteria co-manager at Twin Springs Elementary School. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and was president of the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxillary for a number of years. She was a member of the American and the Virginia School Food Service Association.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, John Scott Barker of the residence; one daughter, Hollie D. Barker of the residence; one brother, Kenneth Marshall of Oklahoma City, and three half-sisters, Sandra Pelts and Minnie Boyd, both of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Ruby Averett of Oxford, N.C.

A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Felton Carter officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Mark Dixon

DANVILLE, Va. - Mark Anthony Dixon, 31, of 110 Old Greensboro Road died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Annie Penn Hospital, Reidsville, N.C.

Born Nov. 16, 1968, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Clarence Dixon and Eva Kirby Dixon, who survives.

He was married to Felecia Dixon, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include one brother, Charles Dixon of Blairs, and eight sisters, Clares McCain of Blairs, and Marnise Fitzgerald, Frances Dixon, Eloise Whitlock, Marie Carter, Kathrine Carter, Dorothy Calloway, and Texas Poteat, all of Danville.

A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Temple Holiness Church with Pastor James Kirby officiating. Interment icon will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 231 Old Greensboro Road.

Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Pearce Matheson

HAMPTON, Va. - Another member of "The Greatest Generation" has passed on.

Donald Pearce Matheson, 77, died Sunday, June 11, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital, Hampton, VA.

Mr. Matheson served during World War II from 1942-1945 in the U.S. Navy as a pilot in the Pacific Theater. He served on active duty again from 1952-1955. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1982 with the rank of Lt. Commander.

He was the Supervisor of Purchasing and Warehouse for the Amoco Yorktown Refinery at the time of his retirement in 1984 after 27 years of service.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane M. Tyndall and husband Steve of York County; three sons, Donald Jr. and wife Peggy of Danville, VA; Jim and wife Roxanne of Arvada, CO; and Bill of Norfolk, VA; a daughter-in-law Linda Matheson of Englewood, CO; one sister, Dorothy M. Petersen of Eatontown, NJ; two brothers, John A. Matheson and wife Jean of Smithtown, NY; and Richard C. Matheson and wife Carol of Staten Island, NY; a brother-in-law George Nail and wife Elsie of Staten Island, NY; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 12:30 P.M., Wed., June 14 at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wm. Davidson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 P.M. at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. At other times, including after the funeral, friends will be received at the home of his daughter Jane Tyndall, 100 Chase Oak Ct., Yorktown, VA 23693.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church Tyler Hall Fund, 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666 or to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd, Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY, 10305-1946.

Norene Riley

DANVILLE, Va. - Norene Little Riley, 86, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, and formerly of 18 Ashlawn Drive died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Danville Regional MEdical Center.

Born May 31, 1914, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was a daughter of Robert Lee Little and Annie Collins Little.

She was married to Ira Odell Riley, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville and had been a resident of Roman Eagle since 1994. She worked in the sewing room of Dan River Mills and was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Dene Riley of Danville.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Neal Riley and one sister, Pauline Little Boaze.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison officiating.

The family will receive friends at the daughter's residence, 18 Ashlawn Drive.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Towler

DANVILLE, Va. - Esther Jeffries Towler, 83, of 105 Seay St., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1916, in Johnston County, N.C., she was a daughter of William Jeffries and Bessie Mitchell Jeffries.

She was married to Samuel Towler, who predeceased her. She was a member of Nazarene Baptist Church and worked as a domestic.

Survivors include one daughter, Gloria J. Reid of Danville; three sons, Marshall Jeffries and Donald Jeffries, both of Danville, and Frankie Jeffries of Bridgeport, Conn.; one sister, Annie J. Foster of Danville; 20 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks and Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. L. Walker officiating. Interment icon will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at L.H. Brooks and Bros. Funeral Home, and other times the family will be at 929 Monument St.

David Barksdale

DANVILLE, Va. - David Leslie Barksdale, 59, of 209-A Jefferson Ave., died Friday, June 9, 2000, at his residence.

Born March 26, 1941, he was a son of Willie L. Barksdale and Alberta Hayes Barksdale.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was employed by First Realty of Danville as a maintenance technician.

Survivors include one son, Eric Barksdale of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Janice Theroith of Fayetteville, N.C., Mary Barksdale Henderson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Nina Lipscomb of Danville; three brothers, Donald Barksdale and Ronald Barksdale, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Terrance Barksdale of Danville, and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11:30 p.m. Friday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Major J. Hairston officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home, and other times at 325 Searcy St.

Dorothy Bryant

RINGGOLD, Va. - Dorothy Colvard Bryant, 76, of 524 Ferguson Road died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Schoolfield, she was a daughter of William Tyra Colvard and Annie Leary Colvard.

She was raised in Danville and lived in Tuscon, Az. for 30 years before returning to Danville. She served in the WAVES Naval Reserves during World War II. She retired as supervisor for Reuben Donnely Advertising Agency. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Estelle C. Brown of Ringgold and Virginia C. Shelhorse of Linwood, N.C.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with Fr. David McGuire officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Major Edward-Price Clark

DANVILLE, Va. - Major Edward-Price Clark, 63, of 1559 Kemper Road Extension, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 8, 1936 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mabel Clark.

He was married to Clydie Stephens Clark who predeceased him. Prior to his retirement, he was an employee of Danville Regional Medical Center for over 20 years.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Cheryl Bethel of Danville and Linda Wilcox of Silver Springs, Md.; and one stepson, Carlton Allen of Altavista.

A funeral was held at 3 p.m. Monday from Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment icon followed in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
