Phyllis 'Phedot' Lewis

DANVILLE, Va. - Phyllis "Phedot" Lewis, 46, of 2101 Kentuck Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at her residence.

Born April 12, 1956, in Arcadia, Fla., she was the daughter of David Yarnall, who survives, and Helen Godfrey Seifring.

She had been living in the Danville area for the past 11 years and was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.

She was married to Terry Lee Lewis.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, and her father, she is survived by one daughter, Erica Waller of Ringgold; one son, Robert Lewis of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three brothers, David Yarnall of Louisville, Ky., Thomas Yarnall of Canarillo, Calif. and Steven Yarnall of Melbourne, Fla.; one sister, Dorrie Rickett of Melbourne, Fla. and seven grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Duckett. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of her sister-in-law, Lawana Lewis, 2364 Sandy Creek Church Road.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department, Tom Fork Road, P.O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn H. Meadows

DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn H. Meadows, of 455 Brentwood Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Salisbury, N.C. and was a daughter of George Harrison and Cora Leonard Harrison.

She was retired from American National Bank after 41 years of service. At the time of her retirement, she was an assistant Vice President and manager of the West Main branch. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, had served as treasurer for a number of years and was on the finance committee, teller committee and audit committee.

She was first married to Leonard B. Wiles, who predeceased her in 1977. She later married John W. "Speedy" Meadows, who predeceased her in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Wiles Seamster of Danville; a brother, Harold Harrison of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Peggy H. Lowe of Danville; two stepsons, Allen Meadows and Michael Meadows, both of Danville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by a brother, Vann Harrison.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Keen Street Baptist Church, 541 Keen St., Danville, VA 24540 or to the charity of your choice.

Thelma Phelps Ray

DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Phelps Ray, 74, of 48 Oak Ridge Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health for nine years and in the hospital for three weeks.

Born July 11, 1928, in the Mt. Cross community, she was the daughter of Albert Lee Phelps and Irene Elizabeth Turner Phelps.

She lived in Danville on Oak Ridge Avenue for 28 years and had worked in the spinning room at Dan River Mills for 15 years.

She was married to George Warner Ray Sr., who predeceased her March 4, 1997.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Ray, of the residence; one son, George W. Ray Jr. of Ringgold; six sisters, Lillie Krawetz of Chesapeake, Betty Minter of Cascade, Ruby Dillard of Blairs, Clara Ketchum of Danville, Shirley Moorefield of Brosville and Marie Dillion of Whitmell; three brothers, Howard Phelps of Danville, Bud Phelps of the Mt. Cross community and William Phelps of Brosville and two grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Forrest H. Rodden

WILMINGTON, Del. - Forrest H. Rodden, 84, of Wilmington, Del., died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Lutheran Home of Moorestown, N.J. after a brief illness.

Mr. Rodden was originally from Danville, Va. He moved to Wilmington in 1946 after he married the former Doris Lee Guill, who was from Ringgold, Va.

Forrest worked at the DuPont Co. Textile Research Lab in Wilmington until his retirement in 1982.

He was a World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor.

He was a Purple Heart recipient and had attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer before the end of World War II. He continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserve.

Forrest was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport, Del., teaching Sunday School and helping to maintain the facilities at Camp Wometo. He and his late wife Doris volunteered at Meals on Wheels.

Forrest was an avid gardener and bird watcher. He was an expert on World War II naval history. Forrest will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He was generous to his friends and relatives, both in Wilmington and Danville.

Forrest was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Doris Lee Guill Rodden, who died August 2, 2001. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Forrest David and Julie Rodden of Cherry Hill, N.J.; two brothers, Nevin Rodden of Pinch, W.Va. and Darden Rodden of Hockessin, Del. and one granddaughter, Laura Alison Frank of Discover Bay, Calif.

Funeral services will be 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, at the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, North DuPont Highway, New Castle, Del., where visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be in the adjoining Memorial Park.

The family suggests contributions in Forrest's memory to either The American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19713 or the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Lonnie McKinley Saunders

CULPEPER, Va. - Lonnie McKinley Saunders, 57, of 20022 Williams Drive, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at University of Virginia Hospital.

Born June 5, 1945, he was the son of Ernest Saunders and Cordelia Ferguson Saunders.

He was a graduate of Southside High School and Virginia State University and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during Vietnam. He was a warden with the Virginia Dept. of Corrections and a member of the National Association of Blacks in Justice. He was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church and an associate member of Ebenezer Baptist of Staunton.

He was married to Leila Olivia Saunders.

In addition to his wife of Culpeper, he is survived by a son, Philip T. Saunders of Culpeper and a brother, Sherman M. Saunders of Danville.

The funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Saunders Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Sherman Saunders, 115 Druid Lane, Danville.

Allie Shue Stansbury

PELHAM, N.C. - Allie Shue Stansbury, 85, of 484 Red Marshall Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at her home, after being in declining health for two years.

Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of Lucy Shue.

She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Danville, Va. and had been a resident of Pelham for the past eight years.

She was retired as a sitter.

She is survived by one son, Sherman Watts of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Deborah Carol Wells of Pelham; one sister, Mary Strickland of Northern Virginia and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, David L. Stansbury, who died September 2, 2000; two brothers, A.B. Shue and Ed Shue and four sisters, Lillie Couch, Susie Knott, Nora Hemp and Alma Ball.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence.

Rufus Anderson Yancey

VIRGILINA, Va. - Rufus Anderson Yancey, 70, of 1111 Red Bank Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.

He was born June 19, 1932, in Person County, N.C.

He was employed as a weaver at Collins & Aikman in Roxboro, N.C. He was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Smith Yancey of Virgilina; three daughters, Gail Yancey West of Clarksville, Ginger Yancey Groover of Sunset Beach, N.C. and Yvette Yancey Rice of Roxboro, N.C.; a son, Andy Yancey of Virgilina; two sisters, Wynette Wilkins and Rose Clayton, both of Roxboro, N.C.; a brother, Talmadge Yancey of Roxboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Aarons Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill McEntire officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Aarons Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

Elsie Cockran Campbell

DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Cockran Campbell, 67, of 306 Guilford Street, died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born February 25, 1935, in Draper, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Samuel Kerzy Cockran and Annie Maude Cockran, both deceased.

Mrs. Campbell was a clerk with Professional Pharmacy for the past 30 years and prior to that was employed with Peoples Drug for 10 years.

She married Eugene F. Campbell on February 29, 1956. He predeceased her on January 11, 1989.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna C. Campbell and Gina M. Harris, both of Danville; a son, Gary S. Campbell of Dry Fork; a special niece who was like a daughter to her, Pebbles Marlowe; five sisters, Rebecca Sue Harris, Juanita Warren, both of Danville, Linda Harville of Blairs, VA, Helen McCallister of Vinton, VA and Ruth Bolton of High Point, NC; a special sister-in-law who was like a sister, Peggy Yates; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Tony A. King; three sisters, Joyce Fay, Christine Gill and Pauline Tipton; three brothers, Henry Cockran, Melvin Cockran and James E. Cockran; and her first husband, Emmitt King, Jr.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Minister Garland Walker officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

William Jennings Clark Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - William Jennings Clark Sr., 85, departed this life September 13, 2002 with his family by his side. Formerly of 293 Rambler Drive, he had been in Roman Eagle Nursing Home for twelve weeks.

He was born October 25, 1916, in Danville, Va., the son of Gertrude Wigington and John Taylor Clark. He was first married to Lucille Prillaman Clark who predeceased him. He later married Mary Cassada Clark, who survives.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law William (Bill) J. Clark Jr. and Nancy Clark and a daughter and son-in-law Fran and Jimmy Motley and one granddaughter, Lindsey Kreger. He is also survived by five nieces and three nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

He was educated in Danville City Public Schools. He served in the 247th Coast Artillary in the National Guard. He served from 1940-1945 during World War II in Northern France. He retired from the City of Danville Fire Department after thirty-two years of service.

He was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and he was a Past Master of Morotock Lodge no. 210 AF and AM.

Grave side rites will be held at Mt. View Cemetery on Sunday at 4 o'clock p.m. with the Elder Dan Parker officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home. The family will be at 128 Winthorp Court, Danville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Steven Michael Hamlett

ALTON, Va. - Steven Michael Hamlett, 24, of 3090 Harmony Road, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1978, he was the son of Alton W. Hamlett and Linda Maxey Hamlett, who both survive.

He was a farmer at Spring Hill Farms and was a member of Alton Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents of Alton, he is survived by a wife, Mandy Teel Hamlett of Alton; a sister, Jennifer Hamlett of Roanoke; and two grandmothers, Beatrice Hamlett of South Boston and Irene Maxey of Alton.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Alton Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Duckett officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Marie Ann Hardy

DANVILLE, Va. - Marie Ann Hardy, 72, of 302 Hughes St., Apt. B, died suddenly Friday, Sept. 13, 2002.

Born June 6, 1930, in Chatham, she was the daughter of Amil Towler and Gladys Jones Towler.

She lived all of her life in Danville and was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Wayne Hardy and Roger Nester; and a sister, Florence T. Allen, all of Danville.

She was predeceased by one son, Richard Nester.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family will be at the residence.
