Arthur Fred VonEime, Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Arthur Fred VonEime, Jr, age 69, of 2833 Westover Drive, died Monday morning September 18, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after 16 years of declining health and a one day stay in the hospital.
Mr. VonEime was born in Danville on July 20, 1931, a son of the late Arthur Fred VonEime, Sr, and Ethel Elizabeth Rose Saunders VonEime.
He was married to Shirley Mitchell VonEime who survives.
Mr. VonEime was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent all of his life in Danville where he worked for Disston, Inc., for 21 years before retiring on disability at the age of 56. He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church.’
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two sons: David Barry VonEime of the residence and Arthur Wayne VonEime of Petersburg, and one brother: Garnett VonEime of Danville, and one half brother: Robert Saunders of Danville, and one Grandson, Brian Wayne VonEime of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Caldwell Day. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and at the residence at other times.

Syndor Arendall

KEELING, Va. - Syndor Clark Arendall, 75, of 17249 Old Richmond Road died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at his residence after two years of declining health.
Born Jan. 24, 1925, in Halifax County, he was a son of William Syndor Arendall and Bessie Clark Arendall.
He was married to Evelyn Wood Arendall, who survives. He lived all his life in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties and farmed and worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. until retirement after 17 years of service. He was a member of the United Rubber Workers Union Local 831, American Legion Post 325, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8243 of Halifax County and was a member of the Sandy Creek Hunting Club. He served with the 29th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe where he received the Good Conduct Medal, European-middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, C.B. Arendall of Keeling, and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, James Arendall; four sisters, Mae E. Meeler, Estelle E. Gordon, Elizabeth A. Keatts and Dorothy A. Perry, and one grandson, David Arendall.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John Bray

NATHALIE, Va. - John Lee Bray, 76, of 3009 Liberty Road died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at his residence.
Born August 11, 1924, in Halifax County, he was a son of Burnette E. Bray Sr. and Lee Anna McCraw Bray.
He was married to Bernice Stanley Bray, who survives. He was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ, French Masonic Lodge #270, VFW Post 8243, American Legion Post 324 and Volens.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael L. Bray of Clarksburg, W.Va. and Mitchell D. Bray of South Boston; one brother, Burnett E. Bray Jr. of Nathalie; two sisters, Lula B. Cockerill of Halifax and Paulette B. Chandler of Hampton and three stepbrothers, James B. Stanley of Richmond, Louis E. “Punk” Stanley of Nathalie and Sherman Stanley of Rustburg.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Liberty United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dwight Moore officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery with Masonic rites.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made to Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, Va. 24592.

Beulah Bray Francis

DANVILLE, Va. - Beulah Bray Francis, 71, of 537 Kentuck Church Road died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 6, 1929, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Robert Bray and Mannie Rachael Clark Bray.
She was married to C. William “Bill” Francis, who predeceased her.
She was a member of North Main Baptist Church. She was a psychiatric nurse at the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute until her retirement.
Survivors include one son, David W. Francis of Blairs; three daughters, Diana F. Gunnell of Ringgold, Betty Francis of Alexandria, and Tammy F. Edwards of Blairs; five sisters, Estelle B. Aiken, Helen Bray, and Juanita “Nita” B. Graham, all of Danville, Dorothy B. Dolinger of Fredericksburg, and Geraldine B. Branham of Sunset Beach, N.C.; two brothers, Charlie Bray of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and Harold “Jeff” Bray of Danville and ten grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Billy R. Francis; three brothers, Elbridge Bray, Jim Bray and Joel Bray, and one sister, Lessie B. Tate.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Diana Gunnell, 539 Ringgold Church Road.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Ringgold Volunteer Fire Dept., the Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire Dept., the Blairs Volunteer Fire Dept. or the charity of your choice.

Stanley Fulton Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Stanley Emerson Fulton Jr., 73, of 1233 Mount Cross Road died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at his residence after 10 years of declining health.
Born Dec. 26, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Stanley Emerson Fulton Sr. and Carrie Adkins Fulton.
He was married to Marion McGee Fulton, who predeceased him.
He lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where he worked in the service department at a local car dealership. He was of the Methodist faith. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Loyene Fulton Elliott.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Wayne Crews officiating.
American Legion Post 1097 will conduct military rites at the graveside.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Clarence Glass

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Clarence O. Glass, 70, of Birch Elmo Road, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Hartford, Conn.
Born April 19, 1930, in Sutherlin, he was a son of William Henry and Julia Kirby Glass.
He was married to Love Lean Glass, who survives.
He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin. He lived in Hartford, Conn. for 36 years where he was employed in construction. In 1991, he retired to South Boston after serving 18 years with Stanadyne Corporation.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepmother, Hallie Glass of South Boston; five sons, Dennis Glass and Ray O. Glass of Cloomington, Conn., Jascian Glass and Romeo Glass of Hartfield, Conn., and Tunnie Glass of Chicago; two daughters, Darnell Glass of Manchester, Conn. and Arleen McFadden of Windsor, Conn.; three brothers, William Glass and Luther C. Glass of South Boston, and James Glass of Springfield Gardens, N.Y.; seven sisters, Vanessa Chaney, Marie Crews, Hazel Glass, and Fannie Stephenson, all of South Boston, Hattie Womack and Mildred Wood of Danville, and Anna Mae Palmer of Florida, and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Dr. James Cabell officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Junior Wood, 5688 Old Richmond Road, Danville.
Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Estella Hamlin

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Estella Hamlin, 91, of 260 Decatur St. died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at her residence.
Born June 19, 1909, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of William and Hattie Wilson Taylor.
She is survived by one brother, John Taylor of Blanche, N.C.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery, Providence, N.C.

Floyd Marable

RICHMOND, Va. - Floyd Lee Marable, 64, of 2719 East Broad Street died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000.
Born Dec. 3, 1935, he was a son of Douglas and Annie Boyd Marable.
He was married to Evelyn Lanier. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He spent most of his life in Richmond where he was a retired postal worker and self-employed contractor for more than 30 years. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Survivors include stepmother Julia Marable of South Boston; two daughters, Jacqueline Cosby and Doretha Morrow, both of Richmond; one son, Timothy Marable of Richmond; three brothers, Wilbert Marable of Richmond, Robert Marable of Keeling, and Ronnie Marable of Halifax; four sisters, Annie Lois Younger of Halifax, Elnora White of Keeling, Brenda Armstead of Richmond, and Glorya Williams of South Boston; one stepsister and one stepbrother, Lewis and Delois Ferrell, both of South Boston, and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William Marable and Richard Marable, and one sister, Cecil Inez.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Richmond.
The family will receive friends at 20008 Old Richmond Road in Keeling, the home of a sister, and 2719 East Broad in Richmond.
Manning Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Shields

GRETNA, Va. - Ethel Ramsey Shields, 71, formerly of Leftwich Street died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Cabell Ramsey and Laura Saunders Ramsey.
She was a homemaker and member of Gretna Christian Church where she formerly served as treasurer for the Christian Womens Fellowship.
Survivors include four sons, Danny Shields and Gerald Shields of Gretna, Tommy Shields of Hurt and Richard Shields of Chatham; one daughter, Devie Gibson of Chatham; one sister, Virginia Bolling of Gretna and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Roy Parker and the Rev. Charles Ellis officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Gerald Shields, 3325 Brights Road, Gretna.

William Thompson Sr.

HALIFAX, Va. - William Kent Thompson Sr., 78, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the residence.
Born Feb. 19, 1922, in Halifax County, he was a son of William C. Thompson and Edna Vaughan Thompson.
He was married to Mary Frances Thompson. He was a member of the Halifax Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Caroline T. Schleifer of Marion; two sons, William Kent Thompson Jr. and Daniel Wilson “Dan” Thompson of Halifax; two brothers, John T. Thompson of South Boston and James Thompson of Lynchburg, and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Level Presbyterian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Patrick Henry Boys Home, Rt. 2, Box 125, Brookneal, Va. 24528.
