Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Grady Owen

CHATHAM, Va. - Grady Benjamin Owen, 75, of 429 Creek Bottom Road died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his residence.
Born Sept. 16, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Benjamin Bryant Owen and Susie Bell Doss Owen.
He was married to Gertrude "Trudy" Osborne Owen, who survives.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Phyllis O. Hutcherson and Wilma O. Stephens, both of Danville and Betty Owen of Chatham; two sons, James Owen of Chatham and Virgil Owen of Blairs; one sister, Mary O. Allen of Danville; one brother, Cecil Owen of Chatham and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Janice Gayle Owen; one sister, Clarise McGaughy and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Concord United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Campbell and the Rev. A. Ray Miller officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Clyde Powell

DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde James Powell, 79, of 1236 West Main St., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after four months of declining health.
Born June 6, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of King Louis Powell and Mary Adams Powell.
His early life was spent in Danville. He retired from the U.S. Navy after serving 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was later employed by Burns Security Agency. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Opal Powell Pruitt of Danville and one brother, Melvin Powell of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Lester Gayton officiating. Full military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin Rowland

GRETNA, Va. - Calvin Carrington Rowland, 72, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Veteran Hospital, Salem.
Born Feb. 23, 1928, in Danville, he was a son of Hampton Rowland and Lula Pierce Rowland.
He was a retired truck driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include two sisters, Edna Hendricks and Pearline Covington, both of Danville.
He was predecesed by one sister, Myrtle Patterson and two brothers, Aubrey Jacob Rowland and Clifton Rowland.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden, Gretna, with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Pearline Covington, 242 Fagan St., Danville.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel White

DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel B. White, 87, of 1455 Claiborne St. died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 9, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Sam Bennett and Sue Jones Bennett.
She was married to Sam White, who predeceased her.
Survivors include five daughters, Metha Fortune, Clarissa Woodberry and Nannie Owens, all of Lexington, N.C., Louise White of Chatham and Marion D. White of Houston, Texas; three sons, Percy White of Lexington, N.C., Joseph White of Chatham and John D. White of Danville; one brother, William I. Bennett of Chatham and a number of grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 12 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Breedlove officiating. Interment icon will follow at Belle Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Tightsqueeze.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Blanche Compton

DANVILLE, Va. - Blanche Noonkester Compton, 94, of 868 Edmonds St. died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1906, in Wytheville, she was a daughter of Lee Andrew Noonkester and Teshia Sexton Noonkester.
She was married to Roy Compton, who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She worked in No. four Weave Room at Dan River Mills, until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of First Church of the Bretheren.
Survivors include two stepsons, Leroy Compton of Durham, N.C. and Johnny Compton of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Alberta Satterwhite of Leasburg, N.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Evelyn S. Nerling and one brother, Earl Noonkester.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Blanche Howell Garris

DRY FORK, Va. - Blanche Howell Garris, 82, of 476 W.I. Powell Road, Dry Fork, Va. died Sunday afternoon November 26, 2000, at her home.
Born May 20, 1918, in Johnston County, N.C., she was a daughter of Fristus Haywood Howell and Katie Elizabeth Watkins Howell.
On July 10, 1932, she was married to the Rev. Harry W. Garris, who predeceased her.
Mrs. Garris received a degree in Cosmetology from the Carolina College of Beauty Culture in Raleigh, N.C. For over 50 years was self-employed as a hair dresser. She served with her husband, in the churches he pastored, as a Sunday School teacher at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a member.
Survivors include two daughters, the Rev. Ruby Garris White and Carol Garris Yeatts and her husband, Harold Yeatts, all of Dry Fork, Va.; two brothers, Melvin Thadius “Thad” Howell of Kenly, N.C. and William “Bill” Roland Howell of Heathsville, Va.; one sister, Ida Alene Howell Wright of Eaton-Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren, the Rev. H. Garry Yeatts of Mt. Holly, N.C., Dr. Dewey Yeatts of Murray, Ky., Mary E. White Tarillion of Charlotte, N.C. and Carol E. White Moore of Franklin Springs, Ga. and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, six sisters and one son-in-law, Edward Franklin “Frank” White Jr.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Harry Meadows and the Rev. Kenneth Terry officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence only.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cherokee Church Building Fund through the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3576 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, Va.

M. Susan Groff

DANVILLE, Va. - M. Susan Groff, 58 of 229 Lady Astor Place died Friday November 24, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness.
Born February 24, 1942 in Brooklyn N.Y. she was the daughter of George Fisher Groff and Mildred Loveless Groff.
She was a graduate of Stratford Hall of the Stratford College. She attended the University of Kentucky.
Miss Groff was an Equestrian Instructor at Stratford College for several years. She began a career in travel business at the Danville Travel Service which she later became co-owner, President and manager.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Miss Groff was a former member of the Pilot Club of Danville, Inc. and long time after hour volunteer for the Danville and Pittsylvania Co. Chapters of the American Red Cross.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mildred L. Groff of Sarasota, Fl.; two sisters, Mrs. Irene G. Cowan of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Ruth G. Flotz of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Lee Robertson of 229 Lady Astor Place.
Interment was at Highland Burial Park, Sunday, November 26th.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made in Sue Groff’s memory to the Gordon H. Neal Art Fund for Children-Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History 975 Main Street, Danville.

James Tate

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - James Robert Tate, 83, of Blue Ridge Nursing Home Inc., died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born March 29, 1917, in Danville, he was a son of John Robert Tate and Ella Newman Tate Willis.
He was married to Elsie Guthrie Tate, who predeceased him.
He worked at Dan River Inc. as a carpenter until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, William “Buddy” Tate and one stepson, Barclay Guthrie of Charlotte, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.

Eddie Witcher Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Eddie Witcher Sr., 72, of 335 Audobon Drive, Apt. 14-B died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Grant Witcher and Mary Witcher.
He was married to Alberta Witcher, who predeceased him.
He was employed by Bacon Enterprises until his retirement.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Witcher Jr. and Quincy Witcher, both of Danville; five daughters, Audrey Blaine, Brenda Valentine, Venessa Toomer and Jaquline Fitz, all of Danville and Edwina Warner of Houston, Texas and two sisters, Nancy Shaw of Danville and Annie Bell Lewis of New York City.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park, with military honors by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at 158 Graymont Place, Danville.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fannie Aiken

DANVILLE, Va. - Fannie Turner Aiken, 76, of 120 Holbrook Ave. died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 28, 1924, in Eastanollee, Ga., she was the daughter of Thomas J. Turner and Burma Carroll Turner.
She was married to Francis James Aiken who died on August 19, 1999. She was a graduate of Welcome High School, Greenville, S.C. and was formerly employed with Judson Mills and Steel Heddle, Greenville, S.C. She was a resident of Lexington, N.C. for 10 years where she was active in the garden club and the children’s home. She had been a resident of Danville since 1972 and was formerly employed with Pittsylvania County Dept. of Social Services. She later founded ProChem with her husband and was a member of North Main Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas H. Aiken and Daniel A. Aiken, both of Danville and William Robert Aiken of Anderson, S.C.; two daughters, Frances Aiken Martti of Greensboro, N.C. and Barbara Ann Hale of Danville; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Francis James Aiken Jr.
A funeral was held 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. and Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment icon followed at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends other times at the residence.
