Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Alice Gravitt

VIRGILINA, Va. - Alice Berkley Cole Gravitt, 85, of 1026 Carolina Street died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Woodview.
Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Robert Cole and Mattie Samuel Oakes Cole.
She was married to Henry Newman Gravitt, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and seamstress, and a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, George Henry Gravitt of South Boston; two daughters, Janis G. Murray of Mebane, N.C. and Florence G. Buchanan of Virgilina; one brother, Holland Cole of South Boston; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Carolyn Faye Gravitt and one son, John Robert Gravitt.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Virgilina cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Florence Buchanan, 1026 Carolina St.
The family requests that memorials be made to Virgilina cemetery.

Mary Hodge

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Mary Coleman Hodge, 99, formerly of Halifax died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Regency Health Care Center, Yorktown.
She was born Sept. 20, 1901, in Halifax County.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Home, Halifax, with the Rev. James Traynham officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.
Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nina Mays

DANVILLE, Va. - Nina Mae Mays, 53, of 138 Bethel St., died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Berry Hill Nursing Home, South Boston.
Born July 17, 1947, she was the daughter of David and Mary Waddell Mays.
She was a retired tobacco factory worker and attended both Danville and Pittsylvania County schools.
Survivors include two daughters, Lillie Mae Mays and April Mays, both of Danville; two sons, Lorene P. Mays of Gaithersburg, Md. and Justin M. Mays of Danville; seven sisters, Elizabeth Mays of and Mary Mays, both of Baltimore, Md., and Maggie Mays, Joan E. Mays, Barbara J. Mays, Donna M. Stephens and Toni Mays, all of Danville; one brother, Samuel Mays of Danville and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, James Waddell.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Rehoboth Apostolic Church, East Thomas St., with the Bishop John M. Burton Sr. officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of a sister, Joan Mays, 319 Gray St.

Evelyn Shelton

GRETNA, Va. - Evelyn Lamkin Shelton, 94, of South Main St. died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 26, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James J. Lamkin and Thennie Shelton Lamkin.
She was married to Holland Carter Shelton, who predeceased her. She attended Radford College and was an original owner of H & E Drive In. She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star 118.
Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Abbott of Gretna and Frances Robertson of Roanoke.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Tommie Lamkin and William Lamkin and three sisters, Mary Altice, Clara Walker and Madeline Payne.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Mallory officiating. Interment icon will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of a sister, Agnes Abbott, 411 Vaden Drive, Gretna.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.

Doris Youngblood

DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Price Youngblood, 81, formerly of North Main St. died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a four-day stay at the hospital.
Born Jan. 13, 1919, in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. "Johnnie" Price and Emma Smiley Price.
She was married to Robert N. Youngblood, who predeceased her Dec. 13, 1974. She lived most of her life in Danville and retired from People Life Insurance in 1984. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Wyanette Council, Degree of Pocahontas #22 and was a past Pocahontas.
She was predeceased by one sister, Margaret A. Price.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Ruby Booth Grubbs

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Booth Grubbs, age 79, formerly of 204 Hughes Street, died Friday morning, December 8, 2000 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Mrs. Grubbs was born in Danville on May 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Joseph Ernest Booth, Sr., and Nellie Rose Moyer Booth.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Thomas Grubbs.
Mrs. Grubbs had spent most of her life in Danville where she was a nurse's aid at Roman Eagle Memorial Home before retiring. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Nellie Nance and June Boyd, both of Danville, and Carolyn Powell and son in law Ralph Powell, Sr., of Blairs and Sandra Winn and son in law Dickie Winn of Richmond, and nine Grandchildren: Kathy Blue, Tommy Nance, Ronnie Nance, Tammy Day, Sherry Wyatt, Stephen Wingate, Sissy Dauthe', Starlette Falls, and Ralph Powell, Jr., and 17 Great Grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Stephen Smith. The interment will follow at the Danville National cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of her daughter Carolyn Powell at 1897 Hunters Lane, Blairs, VA, off of the Malmason Road.

Robert Hamlett

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Sager Hamlett, 75, of 749 Holland Road died Friday, , Dec. 8, 2000, at his residence after six months of declining health.
Born July 30, 1925, in Caswell County, he was a son of John Hamlett and Lillie Pryor Hamlett.
He was married to Shirley Martin Hamlett, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as an infantryman in the European theater in World War II. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, Dec. 18, 1944 and was held prisoner of the German army at Stalag 9B which was taken over by U.S. Troops during the liberation on April 2, 1945. He was a Purple Heart recepient. Prior to enlisting, he was a farmer. He worked at Dan River Inc. for 30 years and attended Holland road Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sunday school. He was a life member of the Archer T. Gammon Chapter 19 Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kenny Wayne Hamlett of Danville and Robert Steven Hamlett of Sumter, S.C.; two sisters, Doris Turner and Peggy Brown, both of Ringgold; three brothers, Giles Hamlett and Harold Hamlett, both of Danville and Neal Hamlett of Kernersville, N.C. and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Mayes and Rev. Aubrey Dewberry officiating. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Hammack

LUGOFF, S.C. - Elizabeth "Betty" Mae Stultz Hammack, 66, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000.
Born in Martinsville, Va., she was the daughter of Dora Houser and Merritt Cunninghma.
She was married to Dallas Coleman Hammack, who predeceased her. She was retired from Lugoff Decorator Fabrics and a member of the Rowan Presbyterian Church. She was a past secretary of the #298 Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include four sons, Donald Hammack of Orlando, Fla., David Hammck of Kershaw, S.C., Daniel Hammack of Kenosha, Wis. and Dean Hammack of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Lucy Stultz of Waynesboro, Va.; two brothers, Merritt Stultz of Ridgeway, Va. and Robert Stultz of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Thelma Jean Pigg.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel with the Rev. Charles Stoker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Forest Lawn MEmorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff, Elgin Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Rowan Presbyterian Church, 818 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, S.C. 29078 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.

Alma Whitlow Olesiuk

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Alma Whitlow Olesiuk, 82, 784 North St., Pittsfield, MA died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at home. Born on August 28, 1918, in Glade Hill, VA she was the daughter of the late H.H. and Mary Blankenship Whitlow. She was educated in Virginia schools. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a member of the Evergreen's Club at the church, a member of the Pittsfield Senior Center. She enjoyed bowling, bingo and sewing, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She leaves one son, Michael P. Olesiuk of Richmond, MA, 1 daughter, Pamela A. Manzolini, also of Richmond, 1 brother, Alan Whitlow of Danville, VA, 4 sisters, Cindy Knight of Danville, VA Virginia Bernard, of Milton, NC, Grace Flink, and Christine Walker, both of Danville, VA and 5 grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Alma Whitlow Olesiuk, who died November 30, 2000 were held at 11:00 A.M. on friday, December 8, 2000 at the First United MEthodist with the Rev. Dr. Roger A. Davis, Pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Pittsfield cemetery, Pittsfield, MA. She leaves 5 grandchildren, Desiree, Todd, and Robyn Olesiuk, and Rebecca and James Manzolini. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Anita Chapman Scholarship Fund in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Donald Pritchett

DANVILLE, Va. - Donald Wayne Pritchett, 49, of 235 Bell Meade Court died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000.
Born Nov. 2, 1951, in Danville, he was a son of Charles C. Pritchett, who survives, and Catherine Woods Pritchett.
He was married to Drusecella Pritchett, who survives. He was employed with the Danville Regional Medical Center and was a graduate of Southside High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of Gretna and father of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Catherine Kirby and Latonya McLaughlin, both of Danville; two brothers, Charles C. Pritchett Jr. and Tetrick Graves, both of Danville; one sister, Gloria P. Barksdale of Danville and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Ferguson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held from 1-8 p.m. Sunday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends other times at 120 Swanson St.

Randolph Pruitt

CHATHAM, Va. - Randolph W. "Randy" Pruitt, 76, of 673 Dual Track Road died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at his residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willie F. Pruitt and Sally Haskins Pruitt.
He was married to Sally Roach Pruitt, who survives.
He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, with the First Division 18th Infantry.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Randall W. Pruitt of Hurt and Danny Pruitt of Chatham; one daughter, Debbie P. Jefferson of Chatham; one sister, Vivian Adkins of Danville; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Smith and Christine Haley.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Christian Church, with the Minister Frank Fuller officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors by V.F.W. Post 4165 and D.A.V. Chapter 46.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
