Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Bernard Baker Sr.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bernard Drexel Baker Sr., 75, of 18 Princeton Circle West No. 24 died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Hospice House of the Hills, after several years of declining health and a week-long stay at Hospice House.
Born June 2, 1925, in Clintwood, he was a son of John Byron Baker and Vissie Johnson Baker.
He was married to Verna Beverly Baker, who predeceased him, Jan. 24, 1994.
He was a machinist and was employed by the Newport News Shipyard. He was a retired Federal Government employee. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps, during World War II and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty B. Falwell of Lynchburg; two sons, William G. Baker of Amherst and Bernard Baker of Danville; two stepsisters, Della Sturgill of Wise and Frances Cortez of Winter Haven, Fla. and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Danville, with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery, Danville, with military honors by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son, Bernard Baker, 217 Marshall Terr., Danville.

Pauline Black

DANVILLE, Va. - Pauline Black, 68, of 201 Garden Grove St. died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at her residence after eight months of declining health.
Born Sept. 20, 1932, in Galax, she was the daughter of Posey Lester Rector and Emma Edwards Rector.
On March 10, 1950, she was married to Wilmer Eugene Black, who survives. She lived most of her life in the Danville area where she retired from Health Tex after 36 years of service. She was a member of The Church of God Prophecy and The Health Tex Retirement Club.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, David E. Black of Danville; one sister, Shirley R. Johnston of Green Back, Tenn.; one brother, Otey Rector of Galax and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Shirley Ann Black and two sisters, Beulah R. Bobbitt and Virginia Rector.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Private interment will be in Galax.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.

Martha Peace Chavis

DANVILLE, Va. - Martha Peace Chavis, age 100, of 310 Cumberland Drive, died Thursday afternoon December 14, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center, after 11 years of declining health.
Mrs. Chavis was born in Tazewell, Tennessee on April 18, 1900, a daughter of the late John Peace and Huldah Phillips Peace.
She was predeceased by her husband , Charlie James Chavis.
Mrs. Chavis had spent most of her life in the Schoolfield area of Danville where she worked for Dan River, Inc., for 35 years before retiring at the age of 65. She was a member of Emmanuel Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include one daughter: Katherine Chavis Hill of Dale City, and one sister: Mallie Jacobs of Orlando, Florida, and one daughter-in-law: Iris Chavis of Danville, and nine Grandchildren and six Great-Grandchildren also survive.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Ruth C. Griffin, and one son, William James Chavis, and also predeceased by two sisters, Stella Jones and Opal Large, and also predeceased by a brother, Herman Peace.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Leonard Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Schoolfield cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and at the residence at other times.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jack Hall Kidney Memorial Fund.

Frances Morris

VIRGILINA, Va. - Frances Woody "Fran" Morris, 60, of 5206 Red Bank Road died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 5, 1940, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of James William Woody and Annie Smith Woody. She was married to Willie Osborne Morris Jr., who predeceased her. She worked as a bus driver and at a convenience store. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mona Alease Wilson of Roxboro, N.C. and Kimberly Lynn Seate of South Boston; one son, Bill Morris of Roxboro, N.C.; three sisters, Jeanette Wilborn of Cluster Springs, Lillian Cole of South Boston and Rebecca W. Yeatts of Richmond; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Kenneth Preston Morris and one brother, James William Woody Jr.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Glasscock Family cemetery, Red Bank Road, Virgilina, with the Rev. Bobby Whitfield officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times at the residence.

Hazel E. Crews

DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel E. Crews, 72, of Roman Eagle Nursing Home, Danville, Va., went to be with the Lord, Thursday, December 14, 2000. Mrs. Crews was predeceased by her husband, David Paul Crews, and was retired from W.M. Bassett Furniture Co., Martinsville.
She was a member of Clearview Gospel Mission Church, Martinsville, and attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church in Danville and was a member of the Senior Citizens Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Crews is survived by three daughters: Jean Adkins and Lillie Wilson of Danville; and Nancy Jones of Providence, N.C., a sister, Mary Edelen of Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Charles Overby, Joyce Mitchem, Kimberly McCain, James Wilson, Selena Jones, Nikki Jones. Four great-grandchildren: Amber Earles, Misty McCain, Jr., LeAnna Mitchem, and Victor McCain, Jr.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 17, 2000 from 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. in the Chapel of Bassett Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 3:00 P.M. after the visitation at Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in the Fairystone Park area in Patrick County. Reverends Robert Robinette, Roger Ewing and Sister Elevena Akers will officiate.
Bassett Funeral Service, Bassett, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Gourley

DANVILLE, Va. - Edwin Gibson Gourley, 77, of 545 West Main St. died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 29, 1923, in Danville, he was a son of John Letcher Gourley and Mamie Turpin Gourley.
He was married to Margaret Wilmarth Gourley, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He had made his home in Danville all his life where he was the owner and operator of Dalton's Garage before retiring. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a former member of the American Legion Post #325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Alan Gourley of Dry Fork, Vincent Gourley of Danville and Brian Gourley of Durham, N.C., and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Alton Vincent Gourley.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Father David McGuire officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Ava Handy

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Ava Cloninger Handy, 89, formerly of Chatham Heights, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Beverly Health Care.
Born Feb. 19, 1911, in Stanley, N.C., she was a daughter of Albertus H. Cloninger and Virginia Abernathy Cloninger.
She was married to John Reed Handy Sr., who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Chatham Heights United Methodist Church. She graduated from George Washington High School, Danville.
Survivors include two sons, John R. Handy Jr. of Axton and Vincent Gene Handy of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence Cloninger and John Cloninger, and two sisters, Grace Ferrel and Mattie C. Morris.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Norris Funeral Chapel with the Dr. Calvin E. Rains officiating. Interment icon will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the residence of John Handy, 3639 Irisburg Rd., Axton.

Tee Hedrick

DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley Thomas "Tee" Hedrick, 70, of 228 Lansbury Drive died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 3 months of declining health and a three-day stay at the hospital.
Born May 14, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Russell B. Hedrick and Mary Taylor Hedrick.
On Jan. 13, 1951, he was married to Nancye Barksdale Hedrick, who survives. He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He retired from Times Fiber Inc. with over 10 years of service as a machinist. He was a member of Chestnut Level Baptist Church. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Army National Guard as a 1st Sgt. after 28 years. He served most of his time with the Chatham Unit prior to serving with the Danville Unit.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Michael Thomas Hedrick of Danville; one daughter, Cheryl Hedrick Craddock of Danville; three sisters, Elizabeth Hedrick Adkns of Martinsville, Gladys Hedrick Milam of Danville and Gypsy Hedrick Farthing of Gretna, and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence B. Hedrick and James E. Hedrick.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Frank Fuller officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors by the U.S. Army Burial Detail of Fort Lee.
The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Malcolm Holliday Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Malcolm H. Holliday Jr., 88, of 1107 Westover Drive died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at his residence.
Born Oct. 9, 1912, in Jackson, Ky., he was a son of Malcolm H. and Mary Elizabeth Watson Holliday.
In November 1939, he was married to Sara Elizabeth Wooten, who survives.
He graduated from State Teachers College with a Bachelor's in economics and sociology in 1934. His career include 12 years as owner-publisher of weekly newspapers in Kentucky, seven years as an executive in the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, five years as initial executive director of the Kentucky River Area Development District and more than 30 years as a life and health insurance salesman. He was active in civic, political and fraternal organizations and was a member of the Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was also an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Virginia Branch of Sons of the American Revolution. and the Kiwanis Club of Danville.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Sallie H. Little of Martinsville; one son, Malcolm H. Holliday III of Homestead, Fla; one brother, David Carey Holliday of Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
A brief commemorative service will be included in the regular worship service Sunday at Fairview United Methodist Church. Interment icon of ashes will occur at a later date at Pine Hill cemetery, Louisa, Ky.

Raymond L. Hutson

DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond L. Hutson, 90, of 10565 North Carolina Highway route 86 North died Friday, December 15, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hutson was born on February 10, 1910 in Schoolfield, Virginia the son of Henry Hutson and Mary Jenie Hutcherson Hutson.
He was married to Mabel Guthrie Hutson who survives at the residence.
Mr. Hutson was a charter member of Shady Oak Baptist Church where he had served as Chairman of the Board, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher and Choir Director for many years. He was retired from Dan River Mills after 40 years of employment.
Besides his wife of the residence Mr. Hutson is survived by three sons, Louis G. Hutson of Providence, N.C.; Eddie J. Hudson of Greensboro, N.C. and Bobby G. Hutson of Danville; four grandchildren, Karen Coble of Greensboro, N.C.; Donna Hutson of Durham, N.C.; Diane Laing of Sterling, Va. and Michelle Papierniak of Chatham, Va. and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Rosa H. Stanley, Mary H. Setliff and Cora H. Setliff, five brothers, Andrew Hutson, John Hutson, William Hutson, and Frank Hutson and Lee Hutson.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 17, 2000, 2:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. Avery L. Marshall and Gilmer Setliff will be conducting the services. Interment icon will follow at Shady Oak Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, December 16, 2000, 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son Louis Hutson at 106 Walters Mill Road.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Gideon International of Caswell County at P.O. Box 38, Providence, N.C., or a charity of your choice.
