Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Maynard Whitlock

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Maynard Leon Whitlock, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born August 9, 1931, in Halifax County.
Survivors include three brothers, Vinnie Whitlock and Thomas Whitlock of South Boston and Willie Whitlock of Petersburg.
A funeral will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church, Sutherlin, with the Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at 4212 East Hyco Road, South Boston.

Leora Grogan Brown

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Leora Grogan Brown, age 89. formerly a Danville resident, died, Friday afternoon, December 22, 2000 at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, VA.
Born May 8, 1911 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of L.J. Grogan and Ruby H. Grogan.
She graduated from Whitmell Farm School in 1928 and from the Danville School of Commerce.
On August 18, 1934 she was married to Edgar W. Brown, who survives. They lived in Danville all their lives until 1998 when they moved to Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg.
Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in the Sunday School, WMU, and had served as a Deaconess. She was a charter member and former president of the Beverstone Garden Club and the Danville Homemaker's Club. She was also a member of the Wednesday Club and the Historical Society.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie G. Robertson and a brother, Landon K. Grogan.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sylvia and Dick Pond of Suffolk and Judy and Fred Smith of Lynchburg, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Thelma K. Grogan of Oakton.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2000 at 2:00 pm from First Baptist Church with Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 - 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Virginia Burnett

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Virginia (Pete) Burnett, 82, formerly of Halifax Road in Glenwood died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle for over 6 years.
Born July 16, 1919, in the Ringgold Community of Pittsylvania county, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Smith and the late Mary Lillie Long Smith.
She was married to Hugh Clarence Burnett, who died on May 15, 1991.
Mrs. Burnett had lived most of her life in the Ringgold Community of Pittsylvania County. She had retired from the former Tate's Manufacturing Company where she worked for a number of years as a presser and after her retirement she worked at the former Oscar's Gallery on Union Street. Mrs. Burnett was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and was active in other church activities as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce B. Ricketts of Danville and Carolyn B. Laws of Centreville; one sister, Eunice S. Mitchell of Danville; two granddaughters, Cindy R. Nichols of Danville and Pam L. Dickinson of Greensboro, N.C., and one great-grandson, Justin Scott Nichols.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday from the graveside in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl burger and the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the granddaughter's residence, 680 Jackson Heights, and other times at the residence of her granddaughter, Cindy R. Nichols, 680 Jackson Heights, Danville, Va., off of Route 41.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Ringgold Baptist Church Building fund, 4594 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, Virginia 24586.

Annie Crews

NATHALIE, Va. - Annie Lavie Pugh Crews, 97, of the Woodview, and formerly of Nathalie, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Woodview Nursing home.
Born June 15, 1903, in Charlotte County, she was the daughter of Wheeler Woodson Pugh and Annie Lelia Pugh.
She was married to Daniel Judson Crews, who predeceased her. She was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church and a graduate of Longwood College.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosa Lee Viar of Lynchburg; one son, Elmer J. Crews of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Gilliam and Thelma Clark and one brother, Hermus Pugh.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Mandel officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home.

Lucy Tackett Escue

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Lucy Tackett Escue, 96, of 4856 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot, WV died Dec. 22, 2000 at Charleston General Hospital. Born Sept. 4, 1904, in Lincoln County, WV. She had been a resident of Heartland of Charleston for 7 years.
She was married to Hayes C. Escue who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a member of Judson Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and three sons, Kathleen E. Pabst of Woodland Hills, Ca., Harold R. Escue of Scott Depot, WV, James C. Escue of Winfield WV, and Jack L. Escue of Danville, VA, and a daughter in law Libby Escue. Also, grandson Robert W. Escue of Providence, NC and granddaughter Lynn E. Hodges of Yanceyville and two great grandchildren.
Casdorph Funeral Home, St. Albans, WV is in charge of arrangements.
A funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday Dec. 27, 2000 at Casdorph Funeral Home followed by interment at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens and visitation on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Leroy McCullen

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Leroy McCullen, 59, of 161 South 2nd Ave. died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital, Yonkers.
Born Nov. 9, 1941, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Lilliam E. McCullen, who survives, and Vester Hughes McCullen.
He was married to Mattie Gore McCullen, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Mount Vernon and his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include two brothers, Walter Preston McCullen of Brooklyn and Roger Neil McCullen of Danville, Va.; four sisters, Jean McCullen and Doris Jones, both of Danville, Va., and Gurdine Ann Pate and Madeline Rena McCullen, both of Richmond, Va.
Camelot Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

Jean Sexton Price

GRETNA, Va. - Jean Ann Sexton Price, age 74, of 106 Gay Street, Gretna, died Friday, December 22, 2000 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born March 16, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late El Caney "Jack" Sexton and Elsie Watlington Sexton. Mrs. Price was predeceased by a brother Ted R. Sexton. She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church, a retired secretary with the Lane Company, a graduate of Averett College and a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas S. Price, Sr. of the residence, a son, Douglas S. Price, Jr. DDS and his wife Becky of Danville; a daughter, Deborah Price Moran of Gretna; three grandchildren, Haley Price, Laura Price and Bryant Moran.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000 from the Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Charles Mallory and Rev. Don Davidson. Interment icon will follow in the Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 106 Gay Street, Gretna.
The family suggests memorials contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.

Zilla Holley Ross

BLAIRS, Va. - Zilla Holley Ross, 92, of 2308 Snakepath Road, formerly of Whitby Acres, Fieldale, Virginia, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at her residence.
Born October 26, 1908, in the English Homestead, Rocky Mount, Va., she was a daughter of the late Albert Moten Holley and the late Virginia English Holley.
She was married to the late Archie L. Ross, who predeceased her March 10, 1979.
Mrs. Ross taught school for more than 40 years. she taught at Dodson School, Dodson, Va., and at Spring Garden High School, Chatham, Va. After her marriage she taught at Snow Creek High School and at Fieldale High school. For the last eight years of her teaching experience, she was head of the Guidance Department at Fieldale-Collinsville High School, Collinsville, Va. She attended Ferrum College for one year and Mary Washington College at Fredericksburg, received her B.S. Degree from Radford College and received her Masters Degree from University of Virginia. She was a member of Fieldale Baptist Church and had served the church as a Deaconess and Secretary of the Board of Deacons and Deaconess. She was a past member of the Fifth District Board of Mental Health. She coached Dramatic and Forensic Activities, coached Five District winning debate teams, and was a member of two honor societies: Eta Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, University of Virginia, and Sigma Chapter of Delta-Kappa Gamma, Martinsville, and she was Past President of the latter organization. She was a Past President of the District of Guidance Association, Voting Representative to College Boards in St. Louis, Missouri and in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a life member of V.E.A. and N.E.A.
In the Dedication of the 1957 Yearbook, in which she shared, under her picture the following was written: "Always ready to talk with us, never too busy to help us, and secretly guarding her faith in the goodness of us in our senior sponsor, Mrs. Archie Ross. Her understanding ways and her interested guidance have been a spur to all our efforts. In these ways we think of her now; and as time goes by we shall think of her with increasing admiration and affection. With sincere appreciation we dedicate our 1956 Fieldcrest to her."
At the invitation of the National Education Association, she participated in a symposium in Washington, D.C. at which time Vice-President, Hubert H. Humphrey was the main speaker.
Mrs. Ross was elected to Leaders of Secondary Education and her biography appears in the 1971 volume.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. J. Elgin (Hallie) Owen of Chatham, Va. and Mrs. Sara H. Walton of Westover Hills, Danville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 23, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Lewis and the Rev. William C. Blaylock officiating. Interment icon will follow at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, Va.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Saturday at Collins Funeral Services.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Elizabeth Sippley

MCLEAN, Va. - Elizabeth Young Sippley, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Woodview Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 6, 1911, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Henry P. Young Sr. and Hallie Jackson Cole Young.
She was married to Frank Sippley.
She was a member of the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church of McLean.
Survivors include one sister, Baker Young Torian of Virgilina and one brother, Preston Young Jr. of South Boston.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Young Family cemetery, Vernon Hill, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Russell Lee officiating.
Powell Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Savachee Thaxton

NATHALIE, Va. - Savachee Antwain Thaxton, 16, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at his residence.
Born Jan. 26, 1984, in Halifax County, he was a son of Miranda Thaxton, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Nathalie, survivors include his grandparents, William and Mamie Thaxton of Nathalie.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services Chapel, Halifax, with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Sunflower Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1073 Dr. Lacy Trail, Nathalie.
