Elsie Lee Saunders

DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Lee Shaner Saunders, 96, of 2526 N. Main St., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1904, in Madison Heights, she was the daughter of George Washington Shaner and Eddie Saint Clare Reynolds Shaner.
She was first married to Robert Lee Wooldridge, who predeceased her in 1940. She later married Dewey Earl Saunders who died in 1992. She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and also a member of Morgon Johnson Chapter No. 44 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Chatham Garden Club.
Survivors include one daughter Betty W. Haley of Danville; one son, Robert Lee Wooldridge of Danville; two brothers, Ralph E. Shaner of Lynchburg and Kenneth of Shaner of Concord and seven grandchildren.
A gravesdie service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Wayne Reece officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 278 Major Court.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas "Tommy" Scearce, 47, of 278 Little Creek Rd., died Thursday Jan. 25, 2001, at his residence.
Born Oct. 15, 1953, in Danville, he was the son of Thomas Edward "Bud" Scearce and Esther Hamlett Scearce Haynes, who survives.
He was formerly married to Vicki Reynolds and also formerly married to Kathryn Poyphress. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Seventh Special Services during the Vietnam War. He assisted his father in the well drilling business and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his mother of Pelham, N.C., survivors include his stepfather, Claude L. Haynes of Pelham N.C.; one stepmother, Patsy B. Scearce of Danville; one son, Thomas Michael Scearce of Blairs; one daughter, Jessica A. Scearce of Blairs and two sisters, Sheila Pugh of Danville and Sherrie Eanes of Keeling.
He was predeceased by one brother, Ronald "Ronnie" Scearce.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. John Gentry officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Berniece L. Ward

RINGOLD, Va. - Berniece L. Ward, 67, of 4061 Birch Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 26, 1934, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Glinnie and Mary Oliver Malone.
She was married to Ernest Ward Jr., who predeceased her. She was a certified nursing assistant at the Essex County Geriatric Center in Essex County, N.J.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Jennings of Ringgold; one son, Eric Ward of Bloomfield, N.J.; stepmother, Louise Malon; four sisters, Mary Dooms, Rose Brandon, Julia Oliver and Shelia Gravetts, all of Alton; five brothers, Tom Malone of Danville, Roland Malone of Alton, John Malone and James Malone, both of Montclair, N.J., and Charles Malone of Orange, N.J. and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Fitz officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, Alton.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 4061 Birch Creek Road.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Lucille Wilkins

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lucille Whitt Wilkins, 86, of Berry Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at The Woodview.
Born August 27, 1914, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Walter Wise Whitt and Emma Conna Whitt.
She was married to Waverly Woodrow Wilkins who predeceased her. She was a retired nurse's aide at The Woodview and a member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Wesley Wilkins of South Boston; one sister, Estelle W. Smith of Pilot Mountain, N.C. and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m Sunday at Mt. Cana United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home of her son, 1125 Seven Oaks Dr.
Memorial contributions can be given to Mt. Cana UMC Memorial Fund.
Brooks Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Harold Allen

DANVILLE, Va. - Harold Clifton Allen Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at the Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born May 18, 1922, he was the son of Harold Clifton Allen Sr. and Jessie McJerlan Allen.
He was married to Frances Gregory Allen who survives. He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He lived his life in Danville, Va. where he was retired due to disability from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a veteran, serving in the Merchant Marines During World War II.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, one brother, Jessie Allen Morris of Raleigh, N.C.; two children and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Julian C. Allen.
A private funeral will be held Sunday.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Isaac CaHill

Savannah Ga. - Isaac Everett CaHill, 77, of Spanish Oakes Retreat, Savannah Georgia, formerly of Martinsville, Va. died Saturday, January 27, 2001. Funeral Arrangements will be announced by Norris Funeral Services.

Sondra Carr

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sondra Tilley Carr died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Danville and had been a Peninsula resident for 46 years.
Mrs. Carr had been a cashier at Paul’s Arts and Crafts for 20 years.
She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Richard Carr, two daughters; Melody Carver and her husband, Kenneth, of Hampton, Robin Cooper and her husband, Larry, of Newport News; her son Steven Carr of Hampton; her sister Viola Scearce of Danville; her brother, James G. Tilley and his wife, Sue, of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home by Rev. Richard Barnes. Burial will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
The daughters will receive friends at the home of Robin and Larry Cooper in Newport News.

Mary Cobbs

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Magdalene Cobbs, 70, of 2121 Robinhood Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Roosevelt and Edna Ferrell Cobbs.
She was a member of White Stone Holiness Church in Southerlin.
Survivors include three sons, Andre Cobbs, Alvin Cobbs and Marvin Cobbs all of Danville; one brother, George Cobbs, of Danville; one sister, Odaruis Jackson of Maryland and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at White Stone Holiness Church with Evangelist Gloria Cameron officiating. Interment icon will be held at White Stone Holiness Church cemetery. A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
The family will recieve friends at 313 Airport Drive, Danville.

Kenneth Walter Gusler

DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Walter Gusler, 41, of 1590 Fulton Heights, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at his residence.
Born June 23, 1959, in Danville, he was a son of Herbert Gusler and Alta Trent Gusler.
He lived in Danville all his life and worked at Dan River, Inc. for 22 years and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Lynn Gusler and Michelle Denise Gusler, both of Danville; one brother, Wayne Gusler of Danville; three sisters, Brenda G. Hyler of Danville, and Judy G. DeHart and Donne G. Walker, both of Ringgold.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carol G. Parrot.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment icon will be at a later date at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Wayne Gusler, at 115 Woodside Road in the Green Acres community.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Samuel Knick

DANVILLE, Va. - Samuel David Knick, 64, of 208 Beavers Mill Road, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 14, 1936, in Lexington, he was a son of John Bolivar Knick and Ottie Moses Knick.
He was married to Geraldine Knick, who survives. He lived in Danville for the past 18 years after spending most of his life in Newmarket. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Rockingham Poultry as a supervisor and also worked for Westover Cartredge before retiring. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include one son, Samuel David Knick Jr. of Parkesburg, W.Va.; two daughters, Sandra Gail of Front Royal and Pamela Jean of Oklahoma; four brothers, Carl J. Knick, John Henry Knick and Elmer C. Knick, all of Lexington, and William Richard Knick of Danville; six sisters, Dorothy Dooley of Newmarket, Evelyn Knick and Christine Blankenship, both of Colonial Heights, and Ottie Marie Canady of Tarpin Springs, Fla., and Margie Ellen Plogger and Patricia Ann McGee both of Lexington, and a number of grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Estel Knick.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. A second funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Lexington and interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8 p.m. Sunday, and at other times at the residence of his brother, Richard Knick, at 500 Copperhead Road off of Hunting Hill Trail.

Willie Pruitt

DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Guthrie Pruitt, 103, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born on Febuary 24, 1897, in Danville, Va. a daughter of William Thomas Guthrie and Lula Phelps Guthrie.
She was married to Fred D. Pruitt, who predeceased her April 27, 1958. She was a graduate of Harrisonburg State Teachers College and was a teacher for the Danville Public Schools for a number of years until her retirement. She was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three cousins, Josie M. Lewis of Danville; Elwood Phelps of Yanceyville, N.C., and Jasper P. Lewis of Augusta, Ga.
A memorial service will be held 11 p.m. Monday. at the Winn Memorial Chapel at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
